Delmont
William M. Heaps, 75, of Delmont, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Pitcairn, a son of the late Martin and Evelyn Heaps. Before retiring, Bill was a foreman and supervisor for Crawford Homes, and presently worked as the zoning officer for Delmont. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, and a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Church, Delmont, the Slickville American Legion and the Salem Gun Club. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Marie A. (Mazzoni) Heaps; two sons, James Heaps and his wife, Kathy, of Jeannette and William J. Heaps and his wife, Laurie, of Delmont; two daughters, Maria A. Ponterio and her husband, John, of Penn Township and Melissa A. Miller and her husband, Greg, of Forbes Road; a sister, Louise Ellwood of Duluth, Minn.; six grandchildren, Rebecca, William, Shawn, Lauren, Brandon and Lexi; and a number of nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the VAIA FUNERAL HOME INC. at Twin Valley, 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, 724-468-1177. Bill's funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. John Baptist de la Salle Church, Delmont, with Father William J. McGuirk as celebrant. Interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont. Kevin P. Altman, supervisor in charge of arrangements.

Francis J. Herron, 71, of California, Pa., died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001. He was born Sept. 4, 1930, in Marianna, a son of the late Joseph and Louise (Frederick) Herron. Fran was a graduate of Trinity High School, California State College and the University of Pittsburgh. In 1951, he was the quarterback of the Pythian Bowl championship team at California State. He was a former professor and football coach at California University of Pennsylvania and a member of its Emeriti Association. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Marlene Sepesy Herron; two daughters, Laynee Herron Timlin and husband, Ed, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Amy Herron O'Donnell and husband, Kevin, of Potomac, Md.; two sons, Mark F. Herron and wife, Michelle, of Scenery Hill and Stephen J. Herron of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Kim Macalak Herron of Fayetteville, Ga.; two brothers, M. Carl Herron of Upper St. Clair and James P. Herron of Virginia Beach; a sister, Margaret L. Pecuch of Langhorne; and 10 grandchildren, Matthew Herron, Mandie Herron Ventura, Bryce and Grant Herron, Meghan, Blaire and Kyle Timlin, Kelsey, Ryan and Brynn O'Donnell. Friends will be received in the MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME INC., 323 Fourth St., California, Pa., Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and until 10 a.m. Friday, when a blessing service will be held followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas Aquinas Church with Father Ed Litavec as celebrant. Formerly of Greensburg
Irvin C. Mann, 89, formerly of Greensburg, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, in Wellsprings Personal Care Home, North Huntingdon. He was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of the late Carl and Pearl (Bayer) Mann. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a first sergeant of an infantry company during the Pacific campaign. Mr. Mann (Irvin) was a retired draftsman, having worked for Lehigh Design in Delmont for many years. Mr. Mann's memberships included the Youngwood Sportsmen's Association, Pa. Rifle & Pistol Association, National Rifle Association, National Parks and Conservation Association, American Bible Society, Coral Ridge Ministries, Experienced Driver Program, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, Christian Businessmen's Committee, Seniors Coalition, Commanders Club, Pa. Game Commission, and was a Hunter Trainer Education Instructor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Reihart) Mann, in 1988; and two sisters, Florence Lascelles and Elva Taylor. Mr. Mann (Irvin) is survived by two sons, Mr. David Mann of Jeannette and Mr. Robert Mann of Greensburg; two daughters, Patricia and her husband, Ken Plessinger of Florida and Karen and her husband, Larry Baker, of Wyano; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends were received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Chuck F. Hildbold officiating. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township.
Jeannette
Lillian Rose Matiska, 83, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001. A native of Jeannette, Lillian was well known as an active volunteer in community affairs. She was committed to the concept of Jeannette having its own hospital and was the first employee of Jeannette Memorial Hospital, having worked to raise the initial funds to build it. Lillian began as director of purchasing and head of personnel at the hospital after it opened. She rose to national stature in the field of materials management, becoming president of the national organization. She was recognized in her field many times, including being a recipient of the George Gassett Award from the American Hospital Association and the Ellis Karp Award from the Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania. She spoke in 28 states on the subject and also served as president of the Pittsburgh Materials Management Society. Always an organizer, Lillian organized the Association of Retired Employees of the hospital after her own retirement. She had twice served as president of the Jeannette District Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and donated thousands of hours to that organization. She conceived the idea of having the Auxiliary create a scholarship for medical students to enable them to establish a practice in Jeannette following their studies, thus providing the community with qualified doctors for many years. She and her husband, John Matiska, by whom she is survived, were married for more than 60 years. Following their retirements, they spent winters at their home in Dunedin, Fla. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Ida Gagliardi; two brothers, Albert and Edward Gagliardi; and her sister, Irene (Mrs. H. Reginald) Belden. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother, Henry Gagliardi; Irene's children, H. Reginald Belden Jr. of Greensburg and Marcia Lappas; Albert's children, Richard and Robert; and Henry's children, Judy and Kay. Visitation was held at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Ascension Church, 615 Division St., Jeannette. Greensburg
David D. McCloskey, beloved husband, father and grandfather, 71, of Greensburg, went home to the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., a son of the late Francis and Grace Conner McCloskey. Prior to retirement, he had been employed for 35 years by Kroger's as a merchandising representative and store manager, retiring from Wetterau/Super-Valu as a zone sales manager. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg, had served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954 as a military policeman, was a founding member of the West Point Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Valley Green Golf Course. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph McCloskey; and a sister, Mary Grace McCloskey. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Myrna L. (Ickes) McCloskey and their children, David D. McCloskey Jr. of Houston, Texas, Diane I. and her husband, Scott Connor, of Delmont, John T. and his wife, Michele McCloskey, of Greensburg, Gregory P. and his wife, Trayce McCloskey, of Delmont and Robert P. and his wife, Kami McCloskey, of North Huntingdon; 11 grandchildren, Kelli Fleming, Michelle McCloskey, Brian Stowers, Matthew Connor, Monica McCloskey, Lindsay Connor, Marisa McCloskey, Nicholas McCloskey, Alexandra McCloskey, Briana McCloskey and Madison McCloskey; three brothers, William and his wife, JoAnn McCloskey, of Baltimore, Md., Thomas P. and his wife, Mary McCloskey, of Greensburg and Edward J. and his wife, Audrey McCloskey, of Greensburg; a sister, Catherine and her husband, John E. Cramer, of DePere, Wis.; two aunts, Mary and Jane McCloskey of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. Ruth Ora (Kuhns) Myers, 66, of Acme, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born May 18, 1935, in Donegal, a daughter of the late Palmer and Alice Morris Kuhns. Ruth Ora was a member of the Donegal Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Donegal, The Old Fiddlers Jubilee and the Senior Citizens who meet at the Acme United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Robert Kuhns. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, William C. Myers; six children, Marie P. Myers Hay and her husband, Alan, of Friedens, Donna E. Myers Vucelich and her husband, Michael, of Lynch Station, Va., William W. Myers and his wife, Deborah, of Acme RD3, George R. and Edward C. Myers at home and David W. Myers of Mendon; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Donald Kuhns of Pittsburgh; a sister, Laura Belle Kuhns Shawley and her husband, Ed, of Donegal; her stepmother, Sarah Smook Kuhns; a stepsister, Ilene Smook Swaney and her husband, Pete, of Shope; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Alois "Rudy" Novak, 74, of North Huntingdon, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in the VA Medical Center, Aspinwall. Born Dec. 31, 1926, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late John and Antonette S. Spilar Novak; and brother of the late Stanley Novak. Mr. Novak was a carpenter and worked for the Carpenter's District Council of Western PA Local 230 for 46 years. A U.S. Navy World War II veteran, Mr. Novak was a member of Corporal C.A. in McKeesport, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 514 and the Gen. Smedley D. Butler American Legion Post 701, White Oak. Surviving are his wife, Pauline Hopey Novak; a daughter, Marie Polacek of Greensburg; two sons, Dennis A. Novak and Gregory J. Novak, both of North Huntingdon; a brother, John Novak of Anaheim, Calif.; and nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. Private interment

Charles Matthew "Matt" Parker, 37, of New Florence, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in Fairfield Township as the result of an ATV accident. He was born May 17, 1964, in Holyoke, Mass., the son of Donald A. and Constance M. (Moran) Parker. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Charles N. and Frances N. (McPherson) Parker. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Mark Logan; his fiancee, Audrey D. Solan, both of New Florence; and a sister, Allison Frances Parker and fiance, Robert Ouimette, of North Providence, R.I. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Seward, a 1983 graduate of Laurel Valley High School and Westmoreland Community College graduate of the criminal justice program and the police academy. He served more than 10 years as patrolman and chief of the New Florence Police Department, and also served with the New Florence Volunteer Fire Co. He was employed by Davis Brothers Lawn Care. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the KENNETH A. STUART FUNERAL HOME, New Florence. Parker R. Reed, 53, of Conneaut Lake, formerly of White Oak, on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at home. He was born March 7, 1948, in McKeesport, a son of the late Parker W. and Naomi Reynolds Reed. He was a finance manager at Lakeview Ford and an independent insurance broker, a member of Faith Lutheran Church, East McKeesport Lodge 765 Free and Accepted Masons, a graduate of Thiel College and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He is survived by his son, Parker R. (Heather) Reed of Monroeville; and a granddaughter, Mackenzie Rhey Reed. Friends will be received Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the HUNTER FUNERAL HOME INC., 1600 Coursin St., McKeesport, where service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas K. Sanders Sr., 73, of Trafford, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in his home. He was born June 12, 1928, in Altoona, a son of the late Mathias M. and Helen Klesius Sanders. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a sales representative by United Dairies of Mason City, Iowa. A 1950 Penn State graduate, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, and a member of St. Regis Church, Trafford, and the Bushy Run American Legion Post 260, Claridge. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jacqueline Stroster Sanders; two sons, Thomas K. Sanders Jr. of Latrobe and M. Matt Sanders of New Martinsville, W.Va.; five daughters, Heidi Meade of Seattle, Wash., Jacqueline Keating of Cody, Wyo., Laura Wilkinson of Jeannette, Mitzi Casper of Export and Gretchen Richards of Dallas, Texas; and 14 grandchildren.
