Bonny L. Harbaugh, 57, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Desert Springs Hospital in Nevada. She was born April 3, 1942, in Greensburg. She was a retired U.S. Postal employee. She was a member of the First Church of God in Greensburg. Survived by her mother, Betty Brinkley of Greensburg; her husband, Joseph W. Harbaugh of Saltsburg; and a son, Barry Alan Harbaugh of New Derry. Memorial services to be held at a later date. Arrangements by DESERT MEMORIAL, Las Vegas, Nev.
Catherine E. Smith Placko, 87, of Mt. Pleasant RD1 (United), died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at home. She was born April 8, 1912, in Baggaley, a daughter of the late John and Mary Takitch Smith. She was a member of Forty Martyrs Catholic Church in Trauger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1989; three sisters, Mary Voke, Rose Fedor and Elizabeth Wasil; and a brother, John Smith. She is survived by two sons, Donald and Jack Placko, both of United; and a brother, Steven Smith of Trauger. Friends will be received at the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, Norvelt, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Monday at 9:20 a.m., followed by her Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, Trauger, with the Rev. Joel Lieb as celebrant. Interment will follow in Forty Martyrs Cemetery, Trauger. Sandra L. Hoffer, funeral director.
Herbert L. Williams, 53, of Salisbury, Md., died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. He was born in Mt. Pleasant and lived in Ruffsdale. He was the son of Betty Cable Williams and the late Lewis Emerson Williams. Mr. Williams was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Vietnam. Prior to moving to Salisbury, he worked at the Career and Technology School of Charles County, Md. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Carlene Williams of Salisbury; three children, Jennifer Williams and Cassie Olson, both of La Plata, Md., and Todd Williams of Waldorf, Md.; a sister, Candace Jeffers of Joliet, Ill.; and a brother, James Williams of Williamsport, Pa. Committal and services were held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Ruth D. Gansauer, 82, of Palmetto, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Florida. She was born in Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa., and had moved to Manatee County from Greensburg in 1983. Survived by her husband, Roy H. Gansauer; a daughter, Patricia Bricklemyer of Moon Township; a son, Donald Gansauer of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Mary Miller of Ellenton, Fla., and Laura Perkins of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Country Lakes Village Clubhouse, 5700 Bayshore Road, Palmetto, Fla. BRADENTON FUNERAL HOME, Bradenton, Fla., is in charge of arrangements. Lena M. Bennett Durnin, 94, of Kingsport, Tenn., formerly of Irwin, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, in Kingsport. She was born March 17, 1905, in Enterprise, W.Va., a daughter of the late William A. and Carrie Evelyn Swisher Bennett. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Irwin and a former member of the Irwin Women's Club and adviser to the Junior Women's Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester G. Durnin; a daughter, Patricia L. Durnin; a grandson; two brothers, George and Earl Bennett; and a sister, Thelma Kendall. She is survived by a son, C. James Durnin of Tennessee; two daughters, Marjorie Tomko of Irwin and Jane Loughner of West Newton; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews. Paul J. Miller Jr., 74, of Alta Loma, Calif., and a former 50-year resident of Latrobe, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, in San Antonio Community Hospital, Upland, Calif. He was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Madison. He retired from Kennametal Inc., Latrobe, with 35 years of service and was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Anita Miller; two daughters, Donna J. Long of Sylvania, Ohio, and Joanne Dopp of Alta Loma, Calif.; a son, Paul J. Miller III of Milford, N.H.; two sisters, Agnes Grzejka of Sharpsville and Madeline Logan of Greensboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren. Private services will be held. Arrangements by STONE FUNERAL HOME, Upland, Calif.

Ruth E. (Vechter) Martin, 61, on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001. She was a cake baker, well known for her wedding, birthday and anniversary cakes for 30 years in the Turtle Creek Valley. Beloved wife of Clifford G. Martin; loving mother of Clifford G. Martin Jr. of Harrison City and Brian K. Martin of Export; sister of Andrew Vechter of Latrobe and William Vechter of Harrison City; also survived by six nieces and four nephews. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at JOBE FUNERAL HOME INC., corner of Shaw and Triboro Avenues, Turtle Creek, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Sister M. Perpetua (Margaret Ellen) Murphy, 80, a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill, died at Caritas Christi, the Motherhouse of the Congregation, Greensburg, Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000. Born Jan. 9, 1920, in Latrobe, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Elizabeth (Molk) Murphy. After entering the Sisters of Charity in September 1944, Sister Perpetua taught elementary students in the Pittsburgh and Altoona-Johnstown Dioceses for four years. She had received her bachelor of business education from Duquesne University in 1958, master of business administration from Notre Dame University in 1962, and master of arts in religious studies from St. Charles Borremeo Seminary, Philadelphia, in 1990. She performed clerical/accounting duties at Seton Hill College business office between 1951 and 1954, and taught in secondary education from 1954 to 1962, while pursuing her advanced degree. In 1962, Sister was appointed treasurer of Seton Hill College, a position she held until 1979. She then served as treasurer at Walsh University in Canton, Ohio; business manager at Seton La Salle High School, Pittsburgh; and teacher of religious studies and business education at Greensburg Central Catholic High School from 1984-89. Sister returned to financial administration with the Sisters of St. Francis the Providence of God, Whitehall, until her retirement from full-time ministry in August 1992. In subsequent years, she assumed part-time duties in the business office at Assumption Hall, assisted the Benedictine Sisters of St. Emma Monastery with financial management, and served as financial analyst at St. Vincent Seminary from 1996 to 1999. Sister Perpetua sat on several boards and chaired the Legislative Informational Commission of the Greensburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She was a member of the Sisters of Charity Investment Committee and Elizabeth Seton Care Fund Committee. Survived by three sisters, Mary Murphy Broad, Bernadette Murphy Pevarnik, and Sister Cecilia Murphy, R.S.M.; three brothers, Hugh Joseph, Eugene F., and Michael A. Murphy; and nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ann Murphy Rusnock; a brother, (Patrick) Vincent Murphy; a brother-in-law, Walter Broad; a nephew, Michael Broad; and grandniece, Rachel Pevarnik. Friends will be received Thursday and Friday from 1:30 to 6:45 p.m. at Caritas Christi, Mt. Thor Road, Greensburg. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of the Assumption, Caritas Christi, Mt. Thor Road, Greensburg. Burial in Sisters' Cemetery, Seton Hill, Greensburg. Father Bertin Leo Emling, O.S.B., a monk of St. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, after a long illness. He was 94 years old. Father Bertin was born July 9, 1905, in Erie, a son of the late George and Barbara (Eichenlaub) Emling. He received a bachelor of arts degree from St. Vincent College in 1931. After completing his studies at St. Vincent Seminary in 1935, he did graduate study in chemistry, earning a master of arts from Johns Hopkins in 1937 and a doctor of philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in 1941. Father Bertin entered the monastic community of St. Vincent Archabbey in 1928. He made simple profession of vows on July 2, 1929, and solemn profession on July 11, 1932. He was ordained a priest on June 16, 1935. Father Bertin served the monastic community mainly in its educational apostolates. He taught chemistry in St. Vincent Preparatory School from 1934-35, and then at St. Vincent College from 1937-80. He was a project director of the National Undergraduate Chemical Research Program and a consultant to the Keystone Carbon Co. of St. Marys, Pa., and was a member of the board of directors of St. Vincent College from 1958-65. He also served as subprior of St. Vincent Archabbey from 1960-66, and as pastor of Forty Martyrs Parish in Trauger from 1960-63. In 1980, Father Bertin was named professor emeritus. He received the Alumnus of Distinction Award of St. Vincent College in 1984 and the Distinguished Professor Emeritus Award in 1989. In 1991, the college established the Bertin L. Emling, O.S.B., Scholarship Fund in his honor. Father Bertin was a member of several professional and religious associations, including: the Knights of Columbus, the American Benedictine Academy, the American Chemical Society, the Chemical Society of London, and the Pennsylvania Round Table of Science. Father Bertin was the author of numerous articles that appeared in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and the Journal of Organic Chemistry. Father Bertin is survived by a brother, Father Marion Emling, O.S.B., of Latrobe; and three cousins, Ms. Jeanne Parker Finn and Mrs. Eleanor Wallace, both of Erie, and Mr. Ralph A. Emling of Fort Smith, Ark. A viewing for Father Bertin will be held at Leander Hall parlor, St. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Thursday from 3 to 4:30 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. A vigil service will be held in St. Vincent Archabbey Basilica at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, after which Father Bertin's body will lie in state in the Basilica until 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bertin L. Emling, O.S.B., Scholarship Fund at St. Vincent College.
Charles Glenn Callam, 84, of Greenville, Pa., formerly of North Huntingdon, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, in Greenville. He was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Pekin, Ind., the son of the late Oliver and Nora Ellen Kay Callam. He was self-employed in the long haul trucking business for several years and worked in the maintenance department of U.S. Steel, Duquesne, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Brush Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shidle Lodge 601 F&AM of Irwin, L.O.O.M. #236 of Irwin for over 50 years, and the Westmoreland County Firemen's Association. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Marie (Wassel) Callam; a daughter, Charlene Joy Bortz and husband, Terry L., of Jamestown, Pa.; two grandchildren, Carolyn Ennis of Fayetteville, N.C., and Amy Tirpak of Butler; and two great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. William Hauser officiating. Interment Brush Creek Cemetery. Masonic services will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m.
