Greensburg
John F. Garber, 74, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at his home. John was born in Hunker, April 16, 1927, a son of the late John Garber and Catherine Sohonage. John joined the Marines during World War II, by concealing his age because he wanted to fight for his country. When he returned, he worked in a coal mine in Connellsville for a couple of years - something he remembered as being a good job because you got paid for exactly the work you did. John then entered the State Police Academy and worked as a Pennsylvania State Policeman for 27 years. John was the policeman that you wished you were pulled over by, as he had the demeanor and kindness of the cop at the counter from the Norman Rockwell painting. Upon retirement, John started an electrical contracting business, Garber Electric, with his son, John. He was going to work on the day he died. It is difficult to capture in words the extent of the grace and gentleness with which John led his life. To say that John loved helping people would be putting it too simply. John's life was about taking care of the people he loved and the people he encountered. Yet he found joy in the simplest of things, from the apples in his orchard, to the sound of a spring rain from the porch of his house. From his life, he taught us to celebrate each moment and to appreciate what we have. He was a proud and strong man, and he has left us with this legacy. John is survived by his wife, Joan Dayner Garber; three children, John Garber III and Jason Garber, both of Greensburg, and Alice Garber and husband, Paul Sestili, of San Francisco, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Costello and husband, James, of Tampa, Fla., and Betty Bashioum and husband, Richard, of Ruffsdale. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Robert Garber. A funeral service will be held in the First United Methodist Church, 15 E. Second St. (at Maple), Greensburg, Friday at 11 a.m. (please meet at the church). Interment with full military honors accorded by the VFW Post 33 Honor Guard will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make donations to VFW Post 33, 516 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, PA 15601, an establishment that John was very fond of and always wished the best. Arrangements by the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME INC., 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, 724-837-0020. Natale N. Pantalone, supervisor. www.pantalone.com.
