Emma L. Fontana, 84, of Smithton, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born March 7, 1915, in West Virginia, a daughter of the late James and Louise Lupori Presello. She was a member of St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, Smithton, and its Confraternity of Christian Mothers; the Perryopolis Sons of Italy; American Legion Auxiliary Post 790, Smithton; and a member of the former Smithton South Huntingdon Township Ambulance Service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bruno Fontana; a son, Santo Fontana; a brother, Emillo Presello; and a sister, Jane Marcolini. She is survived by a son, James Fontana of Smithton; a daughter-in-law, Dona Fontana of Belle Vernon; four grandchildren, Nicole Fabean, John Schmeltz, Valjean Burnsworth and Dee Schmeltz; and five great-grandchildren, John J. Schmeltz, Brandyn Schmeltz, Samantha and Dona Philburn and Colton Lee Schmeltz. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the L.L. BARTHELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Second Street, Smithton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Timothy's R.C. Church with Father Paul Stivason as celebrant. Interment St. Timothy's Cemetery, Smithton.
William Ronald Chilcote, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999. Born in Jeannette, July 12, 1935, a son of the late Denny and Ruth (Parson) Chilcote. He graduated from Jeannette High in 1953 and had been working for Jules Werblin. A graduate of Dayton, Ohio, Bible School and Ottumwa, Iowa, Ministerial Association, the Rev. Chilcote pastored in Ford City, Springdale, Pa., Youngstown, Ohio, and was dean of the Open Bible College in Dayton. After 11 years as coordinator for the World Wide Ministries with Billy Graham, he retired. In addition to his parents and stepdad, Richard Kellner, he was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Chilcote; and a sister, Blanche (Chilcote) Bognano. He is survived by his wife, Susan Chilcote; two daughters, Joy Coker and Starr Riegel; a sister, Ada Uncapher; and brother-in-law, Sam Bognano. Burial was in Minnesota. THURSTON-LINDBERG CHAPEL, Anoka, Minn., was in charge.
Lillian B. Burns, 77, of 401 Laura Lane, Mt. Dora, Fla., formerly of 76 First Ave., Greenville, Pa., passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at 11:47 p.m., in Florida Hospital Waterman, Eustis, Fla. She was born in Boyer, W.Va., Feb. 24, 1922, to Glenn and Vonnie Hollen Spencer. On Feb. 4, 1955, she was married to George Burns, who survives. She was educated in the South Shenango School District and was Protestant by faith. She is also survived by a son, Donald Glenn Brooks of Apollo; a sister, Kathleen "Kitty" Floch of Jamestown, Pa.; two nieces, Linda Floch and Nancy Anthony; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kay Louise Brooks; and two brothers, Ronald Glenn and John Spencer. Funeral and committal service Friday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. at the JOHN W. KERPAN FUNERAL HOME, 1 Donation Road, Greenville, with the Rev. Jay Polowsky, pastor of Westford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Espyville Cemetery. Calling hours Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Cecelia A. Toth, 81, of Ligonier, formerly of Latrobe, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in the Bethlen Home, Ligonier Township. She was born June 7, 1918, in Connellsville, a daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Madden Steganius. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, and its Rosary Altar Christian Mothers. She was a former employee of the Latrobe Area Hospital, having worked in the Dietary Department. She enjoyed sewing and cooking. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul F. Toth Sr.; a daughter, Margaret; a brother, James Steganius; and a sister, Ruth. Survivors include two sons, Paul Toth Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of Latrobe and Michael Toth and his wife, Karen, of Ligonier; three daughters, Patricia of Pittsburgh, Elizabeth and her husband, Dennis, of Pittsburgh and Carol of San Francisco, Calif.; and a sister, Mary McIlwain of Long Island, N.Y. Also survived by nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church with the Rev. Thomas Lukac as celebrant. Interment Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. The St. John Rosary Altar Christian Mothers will recite the rosary Wednesday at 7:50 p.m. in the funeral home.
Nancy Ann Davis, born May 7, 1943, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the age of 56. Daughter of Dorothy J. and Robert M. Davis; and sister of Scott Davis. She died of cancer at Cedar's Nursing Home, Monroeville. Long-time employee of Thermal Industries. Cremation arrangements were held by JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville, no services were held. She was an avid cat lover, enjoyed NASCAR racing, and admired the way of the American Indians. She was a "free spirit."
John B. Harhai, father of Monessen mayor and Pennsylvania state Representative R. Ted Harhai, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, in Mon Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. Mr. Harhai was born in Monessen, May 5, 1915, the son of the late Theodore and Catherine Bolwka Harhai, and had been a resident all of his life. Graduate of Monessen High School in 1934 and California State Teacher College in 1939. He also attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He received his Master's of Education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. He taught from 1944 to 1945 at Territown Academy for Boys in New York. While attending college, he worked at the former Pittsburgh Steel Corp. during the summers. He taught in the Monessen School District for 46 years. Member of P.S.E.A. and N.E.A., and former vice president of the Monessen Education Association. He formerly served as an alderman and on Monessen City Council. A member of Mon Valley Umpire Association for 60 years. He also served as Boy Scout master and a certified Red Cross swimming and first aid instructor, and a member of the Mon Valley Chapter Baseball Association. Besides his son, R. Ted Harhai, he is survived by his wife, Dolores Walker Harhai, with whom he would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on Dec. 23; a daughter, Kathleen Harhai of Stafford, Va.; three sons, John J. and wife, Celesta Harhai, of Mechanic Station, N.J., Kenneth Harhai of Houston, Texas, and Dr. Thomas and wife, Jean Harhai, of York; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Marsha) Ribovich and Mrs. Michael (Evelyn) Stazetski, both of Monessen; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the ROBERT A. BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., Monessen. Funeral services Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Monessen Public Library through the funeral home.
Frances V. Miedel, 84, of Derry, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at Oak Hill Nursing Center, Greensburg. She was born April 7, 1915, in Snydertown, a daughter of the late Stephen and Veronica Sobota. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, and its Rosary Altar Christian Mothers. Also, she was a member of the Jednota Lodge and retired from the former American Cyanamid, Latrobe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Francis Miedel; and a number of brothers and sisters. Survived by her husband, Paul H. Miedel; a daughter, Theresa Mullen of Latrobe; a sister, Agnes Graziano of Derry; and three grandchildren. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the JOHN J. Ruby I. Young, 92, of Murrysville, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999. She was born May 30, 1907, in Solomon, Kan., the daughter of the late Walter and Lottie Hobbs Laney. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Murrysville, and was formerly employed at Security Benefit, Topeka, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Young, in 1989; two sons, Eugene Paul Young, in 1938, and James H. Young Jr., in 1988; and a brother, Glenn Laney. She is survived by a daughter, Leila A. Welborn and her husband, Gerald, of Murrysville; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Young Johnson of Rogers, Ark.; four grandchildren, Brian Welborn, Lori Duer, Lisa Sinegra and Kyla Glaser-Young; and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon at the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Murrysville, with the Rev. Mary Grey Emmett officiating. If desired, memorials may be made to the church. Burial will be in Topeka, Kan.
Frank W. Irwin, 86, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Irwin, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at Valley Lutheran Hospital, Mesa, Ariz. He was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Irwin, a son of the late Howard F. and Mary Verner Irwin. He was a graduate of the Norwin Class of 1913, owner of Irwin's Market, a member of the Irwin Lions Club, former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Irwin, and a member of the Church of the Master, Mesa, Ariz. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Cecilia Yost Irwin and Jean C. Cochran Irwin; and a sister, Mary Catherine Shivley. He is survived by a daughter, Betty J. Dalton of Rolling Hills, Calif.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Holowenko of West Lafayette, Ind., and Adele Niesner of Johnstown; also nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the WILLIAM SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 521 Main St., Irwin, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert C. Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Irwin Union Cemetery.
Sophia Frances (Rafacz) Randolph, 85, of Orange Park, Fla., formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Doctors Lake Health Care, Orange Park, Fla. Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at GALONE-CARUSO'S, 204 Eagle St., Mt. Pleasant. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. Interment Transfiguration Parish Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. The Transfiguration Holy Rosary Society will recite the rosary in the funeral home Tuesday at 7 p.m.
