Dr. Theodore T. Ziegenfus, 57, of Natrona Heights, formerly of Latrobe, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Sewickley Valley Hospital. He was born March 16, 1942, in Latrobe, a son of the late Theodore D. and Armella R. Bridge Ziegenfus. Dr. Ziegenfus was a graduate of St. Vincent College, Latrobe. He received his master of arts in biology and his doctor of philosophy in Botany-Genetics from West Virginia University. Postdoctoral appointments included: North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, and Wilmington Medical Center, Wilmington, Delaware, in Human Cytogenetics. Since 1970, he had been an associate professor of biology at the Pennsylvania State University, New Kensington campus. While at Penn State, he was chairman of Commonwealth College Senate, a university senator and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee at University Park. In 1998 he was chairman of the Penn State New Kensington faculty senate. He was the corresponding secretary for the Pennsylvania Academy of Science, and exhibits chairman. He was the author of several publications. Professional societies included the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Genetic Association, American Institute of Biological Sciences, American Society of Human Genetics, Botanical Society of America, Genetics Society of America, West Virginia Academy of Sciences, Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, Society of Sigma Xi, and Phi Epsilon Phi. He was selected for inclusion in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Ted actively served in the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years. His major accomplishments included becoming an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, and Vigil Honor from Kiasutha Lodge #57, Order of the Arrow. Ted was a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was a recipient of the William D. Boyce District Award of Merit, and Outstanding Scoutmaster Award. He was awarded the Commissioner Award, and was a James E. West Fellow from the Greater Pittsburgh Council. As a scouter, Ted has served as Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, District Training Chairman, District Commissioner, and Assistant Council Commissioner. He also had provided leadership to the Junior Leader Training Conference for more than 1, 000 youths. He was an "Owl" with both the Boy Scout Wood Badge and Cub Scout training courses. He served on the Council Executive Committee for Leadership Development. He also served on the Council Youth Protection Training Committee. Ted attended the Philmont Scout Ranch for many training courses, as well as a trek. Ted also participated in three National Scout jamborees, as well as visiting four other jamborees. Both of Ted's sons are Eagle Scouts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Elaine Ziegenfus. Survivors include two sons, Theodore F. Ziegenfus and his wife, Cynthia, of Butler and Karl A. Ziegenfus and his wife, Christine, of Penn Hills; a daughter, Susan A. Ziegenfus, of Latrobe; a brother, Richard P. Ziegenfus and his wife, Gina, of Ligonier; two step-grandchildren, Brandi Smith and Brooke Bailey; and his former wife, Dorothy A. Zimmerman. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe. Interment St. Vincent Cemetery, Unity Township. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Greater Pittsburgh Council, Boy Scouts of America, Flag Plaza, 1275 Bedford Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15219-3699.
Jean Clare Galbraith Murphy, 97, of New Florence RD1, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at IHS of Greater Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Born Aug. 10, 1902, in St. Clair Township, a daughter of the late John G. and Maude (Dick) Galbraith. Also preceded in death by her husband, G. Albert Murphy, on July 10, 1978; a sister, Helen Luther; brothers, John, James, Alan, and Calvin Galbraith; and a great-granddaughter, Beth Ann Decker. Survived by these children, Robert, John and wife, Margaret, James and wife, Donna, and David and wife, Ingrid, all of New Florence RD1, Doris, wife of Thomas Buchleitner, of Latrobe and Mary, wife of Eugene Decker, of Ebensburg; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Davis, of New Florence RD1. She was a lifelong member of West Fairfield United Presbyterian Church and subsequently a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, New Florence. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of West Fairfield Community Center and Laurel Ridge Grange. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the KENNETH A. STUART FUNERAL HOME, New Florence, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. John J. McClure officiating. Interment West Fairfield United Presbyterian Cemetery.
Wilbur J. "Jim" Clark Jr., 72, of New Florence RD1, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at his home. He was born June 21, 1927, in Ligonier Township, a son of the late Wilbur J. "Bud" and Odessa Horner Clark. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, L. Alice Snyder Clark; a daughter, Robin A. Havay of Warminster; a son, Donald James Clark of New Florence RD1; two grandchildren, Stephen J. Havay of Holland, Pa., and Debra A. Havay of Warminster; and a sister, Jane Ann Pizzillo of Johnstown. He was preceded in death by a brother, George T. Clark. Prior to his retirement in 1989, he had been employed as a crane operator for Teledyne-Vasco in Derry Township for over 25 years. He was a member of the Christian Church of Waterford, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. Jim lived for his family, who in return nursed him night and day so that he could spend his final days in his home with his loving wife, children, and grandchildren by his side. Friends will be received Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J. PAUL McCRACKEN FUNERAL HOME INC., 144 E. Main St., Ligonier, where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Samuel Batten officiating. Interment Menoher Memorial Park, Ligonier. Memorial gifts may be made to the Latrobe Area Hospital Home Health Services/Hospice.
Gary A. "Pappy" Bowen, 57, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Jan. 10, 1942, in Knox, Ill., a son of the late Clyde D. and Mildred Bogswell Bowen. He attended Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. He was a graduate of the Illinois Police Academy. He was a private in the U.S. Army. Gary was a police sergeant, deputy director, and EMT with the Galva Police in Illinois; a truck driver for Carlson Trucking; a small engine repairman for True Value Duncan in Jeannette; and a CPR instructor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father- and mother-in-law, Steve Jr. and Beulah Harrold Potoka. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Emmie Potoka Ruff-Bowen; a son, Richard E. Ruff Jr. and wife, Sara, of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Tina Ruff at home; a granddaughter, Jamie Mimnaugh; a sister, Bev Gerard and husband, Bob, of Galva, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Friends were received in the EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Friday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at Visitation R.C. Church with the Rev. Anthony W. Ditto as celebrant. Interment will follow in Visitation Cemetery with full military rites accorded by American Legion Post 446.
M. Thoburn Banks, 89, of Scottdale, passed away Tuesday evening, Nov. 9, 1999, at his residence. He was born in Lewistown, Pa., Nov. 1, 1910, a son of the late George Warren and Blanche Rebecca Wright Banks. Tobe was a retired electrical designer for R.E. Uptegraff Manufacturing Company of Scottdale, where he worked from 1937-1975. While employed with R.E. Uptegraff, Tobe also worked at the original Pittsburgh plant and served as manager of the plant in Terra Alta, W.Va. He was a longtime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Scottdale, the Wesley Brotherhood Class, and the Retired United Methodist Men. A 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Tobe Held membership with the Marion Masonic Lodge #562 of Scottdale, the Terra Alta, W.Va. Masonic Lodge #106, and the Westmoreland Forest Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He was a graduate of Oil City High School with the Class of 1928 and attended Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1928-1930. Tobe is survived by his loving children: Barbara Lois Banks and her husband, Paul Michael Moran, of Union, Ky., James W. Banks and his wife, Linda (Beal), of Scottdale, Carole Robbins and her husband, Michael, of Pittsburgh, Georg R. Banks and wife, Martha (Rolla), of Scottdale, John D. Banks of Ravenna, Ohio, and Patricia A. Franks of Scottdale; eight loving grandchildren, Barbara and Paula Moran, Chris Banks, Julie Carson, Doug Banks, Jooke and Ben Robbins, and Steven Banks; a great-grandson, Riley J. Banks; a sister-in-law, Janet Porter Banks of Uniontown, formerly of Scottdale; and two nephews. In addition to his parents, Tobe was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Lackman Banks, on Jan. 18, 1966; a great-grandson, Ethan Raymond Carson, on April 15, 1996; and two brothers, Seyford W. Banks and Duane G. Banks. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. Grace (Nicolai) Buscaglio, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in Mesa, Ariz. Born in Greensburg in 1929, she was a daughter of the late Nicola and Mary Vitello Nicolai. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John; a son, Nicholas; brothers, August and Philip Nicolai; and a sister, Frances Cafasso. Survived by sons, Joseph and wife, Sharon, of Yorba Linda, Calif., and John and wife, Susan, of Queen Creek, Ariz.; daughters, Tammy and husband, Gilbert, of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Tracy and husband, Mark, of Tempe, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brothers, Don Rinchuse of Florida, Lou Nicolai and George Nicolai, both of Greensburg; sisters, Josephine Drazdik and Jane Frye, both of Latrobe, and Peg Stabile of Greensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held Thursday, Nov. 11, in Mesa, Ariz.
Alfred Laber, 93, a resident of North Huntingdon Township for many years, and most recently a resident of St. Anne Home, Greensburg, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, in St. Anne Home. He was born March 7, 1906, in Irwin, a son of the late Joseph and Barbara Cipra Laber. Alfred was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Irwin for more than 45 years. Alfred was employed as a draftsman for the Westinghouse Air Brake Co. of Wilmerding, from which he retired in 1971. He worked there for 36 years. Outside this employment, he enjoyed gardening and hunting throughout his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Stehney Laber, to whom he was married for 63 years. He is survived by his only son, the Rev. J. Kenneth Laber, pastor of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Erie, and his wife, Susan, of North East, Pa.; and his grandchildren, Heidi M. Laber of Oakland, Calif., and Christian S. Laber and his wife, Ellen, of Ventura, Calif. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOSEPH F. OTT FUNERAL HOME INC., Fifth and Oak streets, Irwin. Funeral services will be held Monday at a time to be announced. Memorials may be given to the memorial fund of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Main and Fifth streets, Irwin, PA 15642.
James G. Leighty, 74, of Reston, Va., formerly of Scottdale, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 11, 1999, in Reston Columbia Hospital, Reston, Va. Jim was born in East Huntingdon Township, Oct. 7, 1925, a son of the late Frank and Mary Lint Leighty. He married the former Iva Mae Byers on Sept. 12, 1948. Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather to his family and was a retired pattern repairman with Duraloy Blaw-Knox Co. of Scottdale, where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He was formerly employed at U.S. Steel's Irvin Works Division. A veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, Jim served as a Shipfitter 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of the Reston Bible Church in Virginia and a graduate of East Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1943. Jim is survived by his loving family, his wife of 51 years, Iva Mae Byers Leighty; three children, Tom Leighty and his wife, Colleen, of West River, Md., Ernie Leighty and his wife, Dawn, of Vienna, Va., and Bonnie Shaffer and her husband, Ron, of Fairfax, Va.; seven grandchildren, Corinne, Jared, Justin, Dane, Grant, Michael, and Jami; two sisters, Viola Leighty Brooks of Alexandria, Va., and Janet Leighty Keim and husband, Richard, of Scottdale; and a brother, Donald Leighty and wife, Erma Rose, of Scottdale. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale, (724) 887-5300, Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Terry V. Emily P. Wagner, 71, of Murrysville died April 15, 2001.
Born June 18, 1929, in Pitcairn, she was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Beradi Ross. Mrs. Wagner was a member of the Loyalhanna Quilting Guild.
Surviving are her husband, Richard Wagner; her children, Stephanie Wagner of Jeannette, Daniel Ciccotelli of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Richard Wagner II of North Huntingdon; four grandchildren; sisters, Jean Rosemark and Gloria Rock; and a brother, Rinaldo Ross.
Private arrangements were handled by the John T. Hart Funeral Home.

Henry Luczki, 77, of Scottdale RD1 (Thornwood), died Wednesday evening, March 7, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born June 1, 1923, in Everson, a son of the late Adam and Tillie Madarish Luczka. Henry was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Everson. He was a retired equipment operator for U.S. Steel, Irvin Works, with 42 years of service. Henry was a veteran of the armed forces, serving with the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of private first class. Henry leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted children, Adam Luczki and his wife, Jeri, of Scottdale RD1, Michael Luczki and his wife, Jhanna, of Dawson, Stephen Luczki and his wife, Lynn, of Vanderbilt, Bernadine Bricker and her husband, Richard, of Scottdale RD1 and Peter Luczki and his wife, Rhonda, of Mt. Pleasant; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Luczki, Brian Luczki, Valerie Luczki, Stephanie Luczki, Alicia Bricker, Richard Bricker, Chad Cramer, Megan Cramer, Christopher Luczki and Nikki Luczki; two brothers, Joseph Luczka and his wife, Esther, of Greensburg and Bernard Luczka and his wife, Jean, of Everson; and a sister, Allowine Marinucci and her husband, Dominic, of Scottdale. In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Lorraine Chambers Luczki, who died Dec. 11, 1985; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Theresa Marie) Cramer, who died March 29, 2000; two brothers, Edward J. Luczka, who died June 6, 1979, and Stephen Luczka, who died June 10, 1992; and two sisters, Elizabeth Yezek, who died Sept. 19, 1978, and Pauline Pavelosky, who died Sept. 24, 1997. Henry's family will receive friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, Friday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. A blessing service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Everson. Interment will follow in St. Joseph R.C. Parish Cemetery, Everson. A parish wake service will be held Friday afternoon in the funeral home.
