Robert J. Francisco, 47, of Avonmore, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, as a result of a coal mining accident. He was born April 7, 1952, in Indiana, Pa., a son of Lewis J. Francisco of Conemaugh Township and the late Geraldine L. McMahon Francisco, who died on May 24, 1994. He had lived in the Avonmore and Saltsburg areas all of his life. He was employed by Canterbury Coal Mines, Kiski Township, for 20 years, and prior to that in Tunnelton Mines. He attended St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Avonmore. In addition to his father, he is survived by a son, Brian J. Francisco of Conemaugh Township; three daughters, Candida N. Francisco, Vanessa R. Francisco, and Alexis N. Francisco, all of Conemaugh Township; four sisters, Mrs. Richard (Erma) Wodowski of Conemaugh Township, Mrs. Thomas (Margaret "Peggy Lou") Sharp of Brush Valley, Elizabeth (Betty Ann) Shick of Butler, and Mary Ann Storey of Saltsburg; and a brother, Gerald "Jerry" Francisco of Indiana, Pa. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the CURRAN FUNERAL HOME, 701 Salt St. in Saltsburg. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Good Shepherd Monday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m. with Father Larry Kulick and Father William Homolak as concelebrants. Interment Iselin Union Cemetery, Iselin, Pa. There will be a vigil service at the funeral home Sunday at 8 p.m.
Joseph C. Gallek, 92, of New Alexandria RD1, formerly of Slickville, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born April 7, 1907, in Greenwald (Unity Township), a son of the late Stanley and Victoria Plizga Gallek. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a coal miner. He was a member of the St. James Church in Salemville, the United Mine Workers of America, and the Slickville American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two brothers, Frank and Andy Gallek; and four sisters, Katherine Bowman, Stella Gallek, Victoria Sieczkowski, and Blanche Dusic. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Margaret J. Sedlak Gallek: two beloved sons, Joseph C. Gallek Jr. and his wife, Judy Baird, of Cochranville and Edward E. Gallek and his wife, Doris Calhoun, of Holmes; a brother, John Gallek and his wife, Betty, of Slickville; two sisters, Mary Bakes of Slickville and Julia Kowalski and her husband, Philip, of Herminie; two grandsons and a granddaughter, Robert Gallek and his wife, Debra, of West Grove, Jeffrey Gallek and his wife, Kim, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Deborah Cardenas and her husband, Jim, of Lancaster; and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Gallek's family will receive friends at the JOHN L. BASH FUNERAL HOME, 152 Abbe Place, Delmont, (724) 468-8381, Sunday and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral home hours: Sunday 2:00-9:00 p.m. and Monday 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. James Church, Salemville, Tuesday at 10 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Lawrence T. Persico, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
John E. "Bites" Seni Sr., 85, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at his residence. He was born Aug. 10, 1914, in Glassmere, Allegheny County, a son of the late Joseph M. Sr. and Julia Kurucz Seni. He was a member of the Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant and life member of the Holy Name Society at the St. Casimir R.C. Church of Maynard, Mass. He attended Hurst High School. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the H.C. Frick Coal Co., and later was a manager for the Fairfield Construction Co. and Fairfield Apartments in Newark, Del. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America District 2. John is survived by his loving wife of 63 ½ years, Bertha J. Zeglin Seni; his son, John E. Seni Jr. and wife, Anne, of Acton, Mass.; his grandchildren, John III, Kathryn, Jacqueline and Elizabeth Seni; and two sisters, Mary Mizikar of Mammoth and Anna Bossick of Norvelt. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Seni, in 1998; also by his brothers, Joseph Seni Jr. and George Seni; two half brothers, Michael Zuricane and Andrew Zuricane; and a sister, Julia Urbanowski. Friends will be received in the EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Tuesday, Dec. 28, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in the Transfiguration R.C. Church. Interment will follow in the Transfiguration Cemetery. The Holy Rosary Society of the Transfiguration Church will recite the rosary in the funeral home at 6 p.m. Monday.
Roger B. Stump, 84, of Greensburg, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, in the Integrated Health Services, Greensburg. He was born April 24, 1915, in Greensburg, a son of the late Samuel J. and Margaret Bailey Stump. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as an industrial relations manager with the former Walworth Valve Co. of South Greensburg. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensburg, VFW Post No. 33 of Greensburg and American Legion Post No. 981 of South Greensburg. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Margaret B. Stump. He is survived by his wife, Isabella Lemon Stump; and a number of nieces and nephews. There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Should friends desire, memorials may be placed with the Greensburg YMCA, 101 S. Maple Ave., Greensburg. BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, Greensburg, is in charge of arrangements.
Betty Jane Vargo, 74, of North Second Street, West Newton, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Perryopolis, a daughter of the late William Pratt and Ethel Fisher. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in West Newton and the West Newton Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David A. Vargo. Survived by two daughters, Diane Ruth Trotter of Oklahoma and Deborah E. McCallister of West Newton; two sons, David W. Vargo of Washington, Pa., and Dwayne Vargo of Munhall; a sister, Gertrude Yex of Hutchinson; four grandsons, Kenny Joe, Shawn, Laren, and Randy Trotter and two granddaughters, Melissa Ann Petrarco and Carly McCallister; and a great-grandchild, Makenzie Trotter. Friends will be received at the RICHARD F. DODSON FUNERAL HOME, 213 Main St., West Newton, Sunday from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Monday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Milinovich officiating. Interment will follow in the West Newton Cemetery.
Norma B. Loughner Watkiss, 79, of Irwin, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. She was born July 8, 1920, in North Huntingdon, a daughter of the late John and Louella McGuire Loughner. She was a graduate of Norwin High School in 1938. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Watkiss, in 1991; a grandson, Gerald Ayres; a brother, William Loughner; and a sister, Sarah McIntyre. Surviving are two daughters, Roxye Watkiss Ayres of Adamsburg and Dawn and her husband, Jerry Montrose, of Manor; a son, Joseph and his wife, Robin Watkiss, of North Huntingdon; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Cipressi of Greensburg. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH F. OTT FUNERAL HOME INC., Fifth and Oak streets, Irwin, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Darlene Williams, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Manor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Irwin Union Cemetery.
John J. "Jody" Adams, D.M.D., 54, of Greensburg, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at home. He was born Aug. 1, 1945, in Latrobe, a son of Helen F. Mehal Adams of Latrobe and the late Albert A. Adams. He was the owner and operator of the Advanced Cosmetic and Dental Arts Inc., of Latrobe and Greensburg. He was a past president and member of the Westmoreland County Dental Society, and had received his fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church, Greensburg. He was a 1963 graduate of St. Vincent Prep School, a 1967 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and a 1971 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Dental School. He was an inductee of the St. Vincent Prep Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member and past board member of the Greensburg Country Club, and a member of the Latrobe Rotary Club. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, N. Jeanne Deissler Adams; a son, Jeffrey A. Adams of Greensburg; a daughter, Amy J. Adams of Greensburg; and two brothers, David A. Adams and his wife, Joanne, of Ligonier and Chris A. Adams and his wife, Linda, of Latrobe. Friends will be received in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe, with the Rev. Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Vincent's Cemetery, Unity Township. Arthur E. Barger, 64, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born March 30, 1935, in Latrobe, a son of Mary Violet Warner Barger and the late Ernest Barger. He was a painter, and had served in the National Guard of Pennsylvania. He was a member of Cooperstown Veterans and Sportsmen's Club and Twin Maples Sportmen's Club. He was preceded in death by his father, as well as Pauline Ann Laposky Barger. He is survived by his wife, Twila Barger; a son, Wayne Barger and his wife, Susan, of Youngwood; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Depree of Latrobe, Linda Barger Black of Latrobe, and Mrs. Scott (Karen) DuChateau of Latrobe; six grandchildren, Scott, Nicole, Jessica, Brody, Danielle, and Rachel; a great-grandchild, Kendra; his mother, Mary Violet Barger; his brother, Ernest Barger; as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rose Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. William P. Donahue as celebrant. Interment St. Vincent Cemetery.
Herald A. "Barney" Barnett, 76, of Murrysville, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, in AUH-Forbes Regional, Monroeville. He was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Orlando, W.Va., a son of the late Alva James and Jessie Gay Marple Barnett. He was a retired chemist with U.S. Steel Research, with 36 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of East McKeesport; and a past president of the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy. He was also a member of the Willowbrook Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Louise Whiteman Barnett; a daughter, Brenda Barnett Colijn and her husband, Hendrik O., of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Bruce Craig Barnett and his wife, Martha G., of Dunellen, N.J.; two grandchildren, Erika Lynn Colijn and Hendrik Christian Colijn; and a brother, Denver Ross Barnett of West Middlesex, Pa. Visitation Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville. A service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, East McKeesport, with the Rev. Paul A. Dunn officiating. Interment will follow in the Penn-Lincoln Memorial Park, North Huntingdon. If desired, memorials may be made to cancer research.
Alfred N. "Fred" Cecchini, 51, of Greensburg, formerly of New Alexandria, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital in Greensburg. He was born May 7, 1948, in Latrobe, the son of Josephine Piwinsky Cecchini of New Alexandria and the late Nicholas G. Cecchini. He was employed by Respironics Inc. of Murrysville and was also co-owner of the Qwik Stop Mini-Mart, Leisure Laundry and Leisure Enterprises of New Alexandria. He was a member of the Latrobe Elks, co-founder and past president of the Drifters Golf League and coached baseball for the New Alexandria Non-Profit Baseball League. Along with his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Nicholas and Ned. He is survived by his wife, Melinda Amour Cecchini of Greensburg; two children, Fred and Kimberly at home; two sisters, Mrs. Patricia Quatrini and husband, Vincent, of Greensburg and Mrs. Susan Ponterio and husband, Michael, of Latrobe; a brother, John Cecchini and wife, Kimberly, of New Alexandria; several nieces and nephews; and his father- and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Amour of Jeannette. Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets, New Alexandria. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. James Catholic Church, New Alexandria, with the Rev. Father Lawrence T. Persico as celebrant.
