Dorothy Hallowell, 82, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in IHS at Mountain View, Unity Township. She was born Sept. 22, 1917, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Henry and May Matchett. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Latrobe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald S. Hallowell Sr., in 1995. She is survived by two children, Joan Hahn and her husband, Lamont, of Syracuse, N.Y., and Ronald S. Hallowell Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Latrobe; two grandsons, Bruce Hahn and his wife, Maria, and Bryan Hahn; a great-granddaughter, Theresa Jo Hahn; a sister, Lorraine Hober; and a brother, Arthur Matchett, both of Philadelphia. Friends will be received at the HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. William E. Ordelt Jr. officiating. Private interment
will be in Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Triangle Meals-On-Wheels, P.O. Box 347, Pleasant Unity, PA 15676.
Mary E. Moff, 85, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in the Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born May 28, 1914, in New Alexandria, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Carmella (Christopher) Palladino. Mary was Catholic by faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph E. Moff, in 1997; three sisters, Florence Bigi, Marie Stayer, and Rose Berginc; and five brothers, Michael, Dom, Joseph, Anthony, and Patsy Palladino. She is survived by two children, Linda M. St. Clair of Latrobe and Eugene J. Moff and his wife, Gloria, of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Rachel Moff; a sister, Giovanna "Jenny" Bucci and her husband, John, of Latrobe; and a number of nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. A private blessing service and private interment
in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Jeannette, will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. The HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe, (724) 537-5575, is in charge of arrangements.
Mary M. Pavlik, 99, of South Greensburg, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in the Hempfield Manor. She was born May 26, 1900, in Hecla, a daughter of the late Emery and Anna Bortnik Polocosky. She was the oldest charter member of St. Bruno Catholic Church, South Greensburg; a member of the Rosary Altar Society of St. Bruno Church; the Living Rosary Society; Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Seton #306, Greensburg; and the Jednota Ladies Lodge Branch 277. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew S. Pavlik, in 1976; two daughters, Rita and Eleanor Pavlik; two brothers, John and James Polocosky; and a sister, Anna Polocosky. She is survived by her son, Raymond L. Pavlik of South Greensburg; a granddaughter, Linda L. Grec of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Helen Beers of East Palestine, Ohio, and Elizabeth Sova of Latrobe; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Bruno Catholic Church, South Greensburg, with the Rev. Blane L. Resko, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township. The Rosary Altar Society of St. Bruno Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas #306 will meet at the funeral home Monday at 3 p.m. to pray the rosary.
Marjorie Anne Withrow, 71, of Greensburg, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at her home. She was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Greensburg, the daughter of the late George Jacob and Rowena Slaughter Myers. She was a retired nurse and social worker with the Westmoreland Regional Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Greensburg College Club, and was the secretary of the local AARP group in Greensburg. She is survived by her husband, James E. Withrow; her children, Barbara Myers of Pittsburgh, Diane Fives of Ligonier, and David Withrow of Pittsburgh; her brother, George Richard Myers, of Pleasant Hills; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert C. Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Scottdale Cemetery.
Harold H. "Sam" Zimmerman, 66, of Ligonier, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Ligonier Township, a son of the late James C. "Chal" and Bertha Harshbarger Zimmerman. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he had been employed for 34 years at Teledyne-Vasco in Derry Township. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ligonier, a charter member of the Ligonier Valley Mounties Booster Club, and the Byers-Tosh #267 American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marcella M. Baloga Zimmerman; a daughter, Paula Zimmerman, of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sons, Mark S. and wife, Denise, Zimmerman of Ligonier RD2, H. Drew and wife, Rhonda, Zimmerman of Houston, Texas, and Eric V. and wife, Sue, Zimmerman of Derry; seven grandchildren; a son-in-law, Jimmy El Haddad, of Ligonier; three sisters, Catherine Kinsey of Ligonier, Twila Seitz of Ocala, Fla., and L. Jean Andre of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a brother, James E. "Sam" Zimmerman, of Ligonier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Zimmerman. James J. Close, 87, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in the Edgewood Nursing Center, Youngstown, Pa. He was born July 18, 1912, in Ligonier Township, a son of the late Milton F. and Mary Smitley Close. Prior to his retirement in 1974, he had been employed as a crane operator for 32 years with the former Vulcan Mold and Iron Co. in Latrobe. He was a member of the Ligonier Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and the Youngstown Social Club. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Eleanor Wisner Close; three daughters, Anna Wisner of Latrobe, Mrs. Richard (Sallie) Luther of Radcliff, Ky., and Mrs. Robert (Susie) Rodgers of Elizabethtown; two sons, Ronald and his wife, Kathy Wisner, of Ligonier and Wilbert Close of Harrisburg; 10 grandchildren, Iris, Jennifer, Rebecca, Frank, Jaimie, Amanda, Tammy, Robin, Marissa, and Amy; four great-grandchildren, Terrell, Tyler, Lydia, and Justin; a sister, Helen Savage, of Ligonier; a brother, George Close, of Latrobe; and a daughter-in-law, Ida Mae Close, of Ligonier. Dr. Theodore T. Ziegenfus, 57, of Natrona Heights, formerly of Latrobe, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Sewickley Valley Hospital. He was born March 16, 1942, in Latrobe, a son of the late Theodore D. and Armella R. Bridge Ziegenfus. Dr. Ziegenfus was a graduate of St. Vincent College, Latrobe. He received his Master of Arts in Biology and his Doctor of Philosophy in Botany-Genetics from West Virginia University. Postdoctoral appointments included: North Texas State University, Denton, Texas, and Wilmington Medical Center, Wilmington, Delaware, in Human Cytogenetics. Since 1970, he had been an Associate Professor of Biology at the Pennsylvania State University, New Kensington campus. While at Penn State, he was chairman of Commonwealth College Senate, a University senator and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee at University Park. In 1998 he was chairman of the Penn State, New Kensington faculty senate. He was the corresponding secretary for the Pennsylvania Academy of Science, and exhibits chairman. He was the author of several publications. Professional societies included the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Genetic Association, American Institute of Biological Sciences, American Society of Human Genetics, Botanical Society of America, Genetics Society of America, West Virginia Academy of Sciences, Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, Society of Sigma Xi, and Phi Epsilon Phi. He was selected for inclusion in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Ted actively served in the Boy Scouts of America for over four years. His major accomplishments included becoming an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, and Vigil Honor from Kiasutha Lodge #57, Order of the Arrow. Ted was a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was a recipient of the William D. Boyce District Award of Merit, and Outstanding Scoutmaster Award. He was awarded the Commissioner Award, and was a James E. West Fellow from the Greater Pittsburgh Council. As a scouter, Ted has served as Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, District Training Chairman, District Commissioner, and Assistant Council Commissioner. He also had provided leadership to the Junior Leader Training Conference for more than 1,000 youths. He was an "Owl" with both the Boy Scout Wood Badge and Cub Scout training courses. He served on the Council Executive Committee for Leadership Development. He also served on the Council Youth Protection Training Committee. Ted attended the Philmont Scout Ranch for many training courses, as well as a trek. Ted also participated in three National Scout jamborees, as well as visiting four other jamborees. Both of Ted's sons are Eagle Scouts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Elaine Ziegenfus. Survivors include two sons, Theodore F. Ziegenfus and his wife, Cynthia, of Butler and Karl A. Ziegenfus and his wife, Christine, of Penn Hills; a daughter, Susan A. Ziegenfus, of Latrobe; a brother, Richard P. Ziegenfus and his wife, Gina, of Ligonier; two step-grandchildren, Brandi Smith and Brooke Bailey; and his former wife, Dorothy A. Zimmerman. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe. Interment St. Vincent Cemetery, Unity Township. Richard G. Holler Sr., 62, of Latrobe, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in Latrobe Area Hospital. Born March 14, 1937, in Latrobe, he was a son of the late Robert Sr. and Anna Macey Holler. He was a member of Holy Family Church, Latrobe. He retired from the former Latrobe Die Casting Co. and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was also a member of the Frontier Club, Latrobe, and a life member of St. Joseph Beneficial Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert J. Holler Jr. He is survived by his wife, Carol Fritter Holler; two sons, William Holler at home and Richard Holler Jr. and his wife, Sherri, of Latrobe; a daughter, Jacqueline Furwa and her husband, John, of Latrobe; two brothers, James Holler and his wife, Joan, of Latrobe and Paul Holler and his wife, Judy, of Belton, Texas; five sisters, Anna Marie Magrey of Ohio, Margaret Kestner and her husband, Herb, of Hawaii, Elizabeth "Jane" Bucholtz of Texas, Patricia Quinn and her husband, Paul, of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Mary "Min" Decker of Latrobe; four grandchildren, Courtney and Connor Furwa and Ty and Seth Holler; and a number of nieces and nephews.
