Blanche E. Thompson, 84, of Stow, Ohio, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000. Born in Greensburg, she was a Stow area resident for the past eight years and attended Stow Alliance Fellowship Church. She served as a helpmate to her husband, the Rev. Ivan Thompson, a minister with the Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist Church. Together, they served for more than 40 years at 11 different churches in western Pennsylvania. This fulfilled a desire as a young girl to be involved in the ministry with her husband. Preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ivan, in 1991; parents, Clarence and Nora Kimmel; and brothers, Walker and Alvin Kimmel. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Ivan and Donna of Beaver Falls, Forrest and Stephanie of Fairlawn, Ohio, and Wesley and Darlene of Stow, Ohio; grandchildren, Lisa, David, Tamora, Michael, Steven, Craig, Stephanie, and Melanie; 10 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Thelma Loucks of Greensburg and Della Lawther of Monroeville. Funeral service was held at Stow Alliance Fellowship Church Thursday, Jan. 13. Burial was in Northlawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank Rita Baker and Grace Quest for their personal, loving care, and the staff at Briarwood Assisted Living and Nursing Care of Ohio. Anna J. Toman, 91, of West Newton, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in the Jefferson Center Hospital, Jefferson Borough. Born in Donora, July 20, 1908, she was a daughter of the late George and Mary (Huhra) Sholtis. Mrs. Toman was a homemaker. She was a member of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in West Newton. She is survived by her three sons, Andrew H. Toman of Gaithersburg, Md., James R. Toman of Scottdale and Raymond Toman of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Beverly J. Karp of Fullerton, Calif., and Audrey L. Soltys of La Costa, Calif.; four sisters, Mary Balko of Fellsburg, Helen Dombrosky of Fellsburg, Florence Shimchick of Greensburg and Patricia Behanna of Fellsburg; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Toman, in 1984; two brothers, George and Bernard Sholtis; and three grandsons, Jamie T. Toman, Patrick A. Toman and Kevin E. Corwin. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday until 9 a.m. in the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Sweeney Plan/Rostraver Township. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, West Newton, with the Rev. John Regoli as celebrant. Interment will follow in the West Newton Cemetery.
Lucy K. Floyd, 89, of Jeannette, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in the Baldock Health Care Centre, North Huntingdon. She was born March 6, 1910, in Penn, a daughter of the late Frank and Susan Cupusta Kolleda. Prior to retirement, she worked as a packer at Thatcher Glass. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis Gagliardi, and her second husband, C.C. Floyd. She is survived by a daughter, Lucille Walker of Jeannette; two brothers, Vincent Kolleda and his wife, Lola, of Penn and John Kolleda and his wife, Kate, of Oregon; two sisters, Ann Garufi and her husband, Charles, and Rita Wood, all of Penn; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette, Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m., at which time a funeral service will be held in the funeral home with Pastor Dale W. Roddy officiating. Private interment
will be in the Brush Creek Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
Waddy G. Grippo Sr., 86, of Tarrs RD3, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. He was born June 3, 1913, in Naples, Italy, a son of the late Gregory and Anna Marie Padula Grippo. He was a member of the St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant and was a student of the former East Huntingdon High School. Prior to his retirement, he was a coal miner, having been employed by Delmont Fuel, and was a member of the U.M.W.A District 2. He was also a member of the Mt. Pleasant Firemen's Club, East Huntingdon Firemen, the Slovak, the Hecla Sportsmen's, the Kosciuszko and the Standard Shaft Citizens clubs. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Pravlik Grippo; two sons, Eugene J. Grippo of Tarrs and George D. Grippo and wife, Joanne, of Scottdale RD1; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Waddy Grippo Jr., in 1999; and three brothers, Paul, Patsy and David Grippo. Friends will be received in the EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Monday, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in the St. Pius X R.C. Church with the Rev. James W. Clark as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Pius X Cemetery.
John W. "Jack" Henrie, 63, of Greensburg, formerly of Youngwood, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Jan. 28, 1936, in Youngwood, a son of the late John S. and Laura Wise Henrie. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, John W. Henrie Jr.; and a brother, Robert Henrie. Surviving are his wife, Jean Malinish Henrie; two sisters, Mrs. William (Roberta) Workman and Mrs. Carey (Patricia) Burke, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Richard Henrie and wife, Rebecca, of Chippewa, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Youngwood and retired from Powerex Inc. of Youngwood. He was a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge 777 of Scottdale and the VFW Post 211 of Youngwood. Friends will be received at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Youngwood, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a church service at Christ United Methodist Church, Youngwood, Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Merritt Edner officiating. Interment to follow at Westmoreland County Memorial Park. There will be a B.P.O.E. service at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Gladys Harman Magda, 66, of Stahlstown RD1, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born July 23, 1933, in Cook Township, a daughter of the late Leman and Grace Hoffer Harman. She was a member of Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Donegal. Gladys was retired as a machinist from Elliott Company, Jeannette, and was a member of the United Steelworkers Local 1145. She was preceded in death by a son, James Edward Yost, on Oct. 6, 1976; and three brothers, George, Carl and Merle Harman. She is survived by her husband, Richard J. Magda; a son, Michael Yost of El Cajon, Calif.; a daughter, Joyce Yost of Lockport, N.Y.; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two step-great-grandsons; a brother, Allen Harman and his wife, Donna, of Ligonier; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at the L. BOYD SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC., Church Street, Donegal, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mt. John R. Hunter, 95, of Derry, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000. He was born July 29, 1904, in Latrobe, a son of the late Thomas B. and Lettie Jane Reed Hunter. A retired engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad, he was the second oldest and a life member of Latrobe United Presbyterian Church. He was a member of I.O.O.F. Lodge #541 of Latrobe, the F&AM Lodge #568 and a life member of the Rod and Gun Club and Ukrainian Society, all of Derry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi E. Baltozer Hunter, in 1986; three brothers, T. Bailey, James W. and R. Emerson Hunter; and two sisters, Carrie H. Giesey and Jane Igo. John is survived by a son, J. Luther Hunter of Latrobe; a daughter, Mrs. Denton (Mary Jane) Dillon of Blairsville RD3; three grandchildren, Diana Dillon, Faun Dillon, and Jeffrey Dillon and his wife, Paula; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mary Hunter of Derry. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME, 548 N. Chestnut St., Derry. Ronald Paul Mlinek Sr., 52, of Wyano, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home. He was born July 18, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of Eva Zowada Mlinek of Wyano and the late Martin Mlinek. He was an employee of Painters Union Local 409. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Nellie (Pasternak) Mlinek; two sons, Ronald Mlinek Jr. and his wife, Kristy, of Wyano and Joseph Mlinek at home and his fiancee, Candy Cain; a granddaughter, Rachel; four sisters, Florence Rhodes of Waltz Mill, Frances Riddle of Texas, Caroline Daum of Bethel Park and Loretta Foster of Lowber; two brothers, John Mlinek of Wyano and Robert Mlinek of Mendon; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by a brother, Edward, and two sisters, Joanne Waller and Dorothy Mlinek. Friends will be received at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. in Seven Dolors Roman Catholic Church, Yukon, with the Rev. Gladys M. Poorman, 78, of New Stanton, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, in Westminster, Md. She was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Hempfield Township, a daughter of the late Russell O. and Berna Kauffman Shrader. She was a former employee of the Hempfield School District, where she worked as a secretary at the Harrold Junior High School. She attended the Westminster Bible Church and was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Thrift Shop for the YWCA. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert P. Poorman; a son, Daniel R. Poorman; and two brothers, Wilbur and Wayne Shrader. Surviving are her son, James Poorman and his wife, Peggy, of Westminster, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Dana Meadows; five grandchildren, James R. Poorman, Rebekah L. Snyder, Corey, Kevin and Todd Poorman; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Sizemore, Gabriel and Grace Snyder; and a sister, Kathryn Hilewick of Hempfield Township. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Youngwood, where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Sara J. Porterfield, 89, of Latrobe RD2, formerly of Norvelt, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000. She was born Jan. 21, 1910, in Sewickley Township, a daughter of the late John and Della Errett Derr. She was a former member of Norvelt Union Church. She was a retired cafeteria cook in the Mt. Pleasant School District. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Howard Crise; her second husband, Clyde Porterfield; four brothers, David Derr, Jacob Derr, John Derr and Adam Derr; and two sisters, Hanna Beckinger and Margaret Turk. She is survived by her two sons, John Crise of Greensburg and Howard "Bud" Crise and wife, Joyce, of Latrobe RD2; three sisters, Mary Jackson of Elyria, Ohio, Cora Schwanz of Lamar, Colo., and Betty Hawkins of Hasty, Colo.; five grandchildren, Erica and Samantha Crise, Michael, Roger and Sherrie Crise; and five great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, Norvelt, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Kurt Kusserow officiating.
