Tech. Sgt. Charles A. "Chuck" Akins, 40, of Broad Street, Derry, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000. Born Nov. 25, 1959, in Latrobe, a son of Charles A. and Nira "Nancy" Thiel Akins of Derry. He was a 1977 graduate of Derry Area High School and an 11-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in England. He was an aircraft mechanic. He was just recently stationed in Budapest, Hungary, during the Kosovo conflict and was presently serving in the Pennsylvania International Guard. He was employed by Speciality Tires of America in Indiana, Pa., and was a member of the Twin Maples Derry Rod and Gun Club, and the National Rifle Association. He loved the outdoors and hunting. Besides his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Anna, of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, Richard C. Akins of Derry; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Third Ave., Derry. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Derry, with the Rev. Father Stephen C. West as celebrant. Interment will be private. Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Catherine W. "Ditty" Baker, 82, of Greensburg, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000. She was born in Irwin, Nov. 29, 1917, a daughter of the late Harry and Jean (Barnes) White. She was the wife of the late Charles F. Baker and had lived in Greensburg for 60 years. She was also preceded in death, besides her parents and husband, by her sister, Emma Jean Battiston; and brother, Bud White. Mrs. Baker was an active homemaker who enjoyed cooking, gardening, talking, needlecrafts and Bridge. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensburg. Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Cathy and Bob Hibschman, and Mary Baker and John Podobnik; a sister, Julia Warden; a nephew and his wife, Chris and Christina Warden; and a host of generous and loving friends. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. when services will be held in the funeral home with the Rev. James Nash and the Rev. Donald Lash co-officiating. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the local chapter of the American Heart Association.
Veronica M. (Cindric) Bonelli, 72, of Greensburg, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born April 10, 1927, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Marco and Magdaline Gallis Cindric. She was Catholic by faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Cindric. She is survived by her husband, Mark V. Bonelli; a daughter, Linda L. Bonelli of Greensburg; a brother, Michael and his wife, Ann Cindric, of Latrobe; two sisters, Mary Cindric of Bovard and Ann Curran of Greensburg; a niece, Kathleen and her husband, Stephen Geary, of Greensburg; three nephews, Marco, John, and David Curran, all of Greensburg; and two great-nieces and a -nephew, Lauren, Matthew, and Alana Geary. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Wednesday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Bede Catholic Church, Bovard, with the Rev. Brinstan G. Takach, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
Phyllis A. Eisaman, 61, of Arona, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at the Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born Aug. 6, 1938, in Turtle Creek, a daughter of the late Albert P. and Mary D. Hayes Leeds. She was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Arona, and a member and president of the Arona Women's Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George and David Leeds; and two sisters, Mary Matthews and Jean Kelly. Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Carl M. Eisaman; a son, Kevin A. Eisaman and his wife, Donna, of Apollo; two daughters, Carol A. Anthony and her husband, Richard, of Arona and Jill M. Lender and her husband, Jeff, of Arona; six grandchildren, Casey Anthony, Kelsey Lender, Matthew Eisaman, Danielle Anthony, Jason Lender and Michael Eisaman; a brother, Frank Leeds of the state of Indiana; three sisters, Anna Mauro of Monroeville, Wanda Ivanco of Penn Hills and Rose Marie Lawrence of North Versailles. Friends will be received at the BEATTY-RICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 136, Madison, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Arona, with her pastor, the Rev. L. Samuel Scheiderer, officiating. Interment will follow in the Brush Creek Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
Anna M. Kalata, of Delmont (formerly of Greensburg) died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at her home. She was born in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Luigi A. and Domenica Rusciano Dangelo. Prior to retirement, she was employed at Westmoreland Manor, Hempfield Township. She was a member of St. John Baptist de La Salle Church, Delmont. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George J. Kalata, in 1968, and was the last surviving member of her birth family. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Rodman and her husband, Geoffrey, with whom she resided; three granddaughters, Shauney Kelsey and her husband, Craig and Dawn Yeskey and her husband, Tim, all of Jeannette, and Joelene Hess and her husband, Guy, of Greensburg; and two great-grandsons, Russel Yeskey and Austin Hess. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the JOHN L. BASH FUNERAL HOME, 152 Abbe Place, Delmont (724) 468-8381.
Joseph Bernard Korosec, 51, of Laurel, Md., formerly of Yukon, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., of complications from surgery. Mr. Korosec attended St. Vincent College Preparatory and St. Vincent College, Latrobe. He started his Army career in 1968 as a special agent in military intelligence. He later accepted an appointment as a warrant officer to become a criminal investigator. Upon his retirement from the Army as a chief warrant officer, he worked for the U.S. Department of State and later for the Department of Defense as an investigator until his death. He leaves behind his wife, Anna C. Korosec; two daughters, Anna Mae Korosec and Christine R. Korosec; and a grandson, Wauel Joseph Alston, all of Laurel, Md. He also leaves behind two sisters, Vivian Hirn and Fontaine Gansor, both of Yukon. Graveside services and burial will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. Eugene W. Kurth, 68, of Ruffsdale RD2, died at his home, Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000. Born March 8, 1931, in Wyano, Pa., a son of the late Walter and Beatrice Corella Kurth. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Mt. Pleasant. He was a graduate of the former East Huntingdon High School, Class of 1949, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean conflict. He had worked at the Walworth Co. in Greensburg for 30 years and as a security guard for 15 years at Hackney and St. Maritz Securities. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patty Kurth. Survived by his wife of 49 years, Dollie Hixson Kurth of Ruffsdale RD2; and beloved son, Kevin Kurth and wife, Brenda, also of Ruffsdale RD2; two grandchildren, Amanda and Adam Kurth, both of Ruffsdale RD2; four sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Rose) Hixson of Smiths Creek, Mich., Mrs. Norma Keyes of Clinton Township, Mich., Mrs. Robert (Beverly) Burkhart of Clement, Mich. and Mrs. Barbara Fischer of Columbus, Mich. Friends will be received at the LUTHER J. GRIMM FUNERAL HOME, Mt. Pleasant, Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Sherry Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville.
Anna M. Nystrom, 93, of Irwin, formerly of McKeesport and White Oak, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in the Huntingdon Ridge Mature Living Home. She was born Oct. 19, 1906, in McKeesport, the daughter of the late James and Mary McCloskey McCusker. She was a graduate of St. Peter's High School, and a member of St. Martin dePorres Parish and Huntingdon Ridge, Irwin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl M. Nystrom. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Nellie Slagle of Yorba Linda, Calif.; a nephew, Harold (Lavona) Douglas of Irwin; and four nieces. Friends will be received Tuesday from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. at STRIFFLERS' OF WHITE OAK. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Worship Site, McKeesport. Interment New St. Joseph's Cemetery, North Versailles.
Robert G. Peoples, 69, of Youngwood, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in Fort Myers, Fla. He was born Aug. 16, 1930, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Edward K. Peoples and Olive Trout Peoples Ray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Steele Peoples. He was a former general manager of the former B & P Motor Express, and a manager of the former Interstate Motor Freight Co. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Youngwood; a life member of the Youngwood Volunteer Hose Co. #1; a former member and past president of the Youngwood Borough Council; a former member of the Youngwood Lions Club; a social member of the VFW, Youngwood; a member of the F&AM 518, Greensburg; Scottish Rite Valley of Pittsburgh; Tall Cedars, New Alexandria; the Roosevelt Club; member and past treasurer of the RobertShaw Golf Club; and the L.O.O.M., Homosassa Springs, Fla. He is survived by two sons and a daughter, Robert E. Peoples and his wife, Kimberly Y., of Greensburg, Jay E. Peoples and his wife, Jayne A., of Youngwood, and Sue P. Burke and her husband, James E., of Irwin; a brother, William E. Peoples of North Huntingdon; and six grandchildren, John and Kylie Peoples, Kelly and Katie Burke, and Jeremy and Julie Peoples. Friends will be received at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Youngwood, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church, Youngwood, with the Rev. Dr. Merritt Edner officiating. Interment to follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
Marie Kepple Ruffner, 81, of New Alexandria, passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in her residence. She was born Dec. 24, 1918, in Salem Township, at the Kepple home farm. She was the daughter of the late George and Alice Steele Kepple. She retired from the Derry Area Cafeteria, where she worked for 13 years. She was a member of the Community United Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, and served on its board of trustees. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #281, Greensburg, and past Guardian of the Jobe Daughters. She was a member of the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Ruffner, in 1989; and a brother, David Kepple, in 1986. She is survived by three sons, Leslie K. and friend, Ethel, of Greensburg, Richard G. and wife, Andrea, of Greenville and Larry H. and wife, Jean, of Latrobe; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets, New Alexandria. Services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the Community United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Terry J. Carnahan officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, New Alexandria.
