Willie D. Smith, 67, of Jeannette, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in the Monsour Medical Center, Jeannette. She was born July 14, 1932, in Straven, Ala., a daughter of the late William and Sally Mae Anderson. She was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Smith; and her second husband, William Coles; her mother-in-law, Emma Anderson; a brother-in-law, Jessie Niccols; and two aunts, Dora Hogan and Minnie Brown. She is survived by three sons, Leeroy Smith of Jeannette, William Anderson II of Greensburg, and Thomas Smith Jr. of Clairton; five daughters, Emma, Mary, and Flora Smith, all of Jeannette, Minnie Webb of Bessemer, Ala., and Valerie Jean Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepson, William H. Coles II of White Plains, N.J.; two sisters, Georgia Mae Stanton of Bessemer, Ala., and Ella Mae Anderson of Montgomery, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Florence Niccols of Uniontown; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201. N. First St., Jeannette, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Additional viewing will be Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Zion Hill Baptist Church, Jeannette, at which time services will be held with the Rev. Joseph Brundage officiating.
Helen S. Takoch, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in Ft. Myers, Fla. She was born Oct. 6, 1913, in Ruffsdale, a daughter of the late William and Mary Theresa Dzurilla Stana. She was a member of Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant and its Christian Mothers and Rosary Altar Society. She had worked for General Motors in Trenton, N.J., for over 20 years. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edward S. Takoch in 1983; five sisters, Catherine Dobransky, Mary Dalansky, Julia Hohol, Elizabeth Brodak and Agnes Mayti; and three brothers, Frank, William and Joseph Stana. She is survived by two sons, James Takoch of Mt. Pleasant and Michael Takoch and his wife, Judy, of Connellsville; two daughters, Ann Francis and her husband, Robert, of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Helen Marie Takoch of Bowling Green, Ky.; six grandchildren; a brother, Steve Stana of Mt. Pleasant; and a sister, Margaret Kocis of Trenton, N.J. Friends will be received in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 406 E. Washington St., Mt. Pleasant, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in the Visitation R.C. Church with the Rev. Michael Matusak as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Visitation Cemetery. The Visitation Christian Mothers will join with the Visitation Rosary Altar Society to recite the rosary Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
John L. "Jack" Brecht, 72, of Jeannette, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born July 14, 1927, in Jeannette, a son of the late Joseph and Kathryn L. Kemerer Brecht. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to retirement, he was a plant accountant at West Penn Power, and was currently employed as an associate at the Mason-Gelder Funeral Home Inc. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Jeannette, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus Council #1222, Ushers Society, an Altar Server, Westmoreland Seniors Men's Golf League, Frontier Club and the AARP of Jeannette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Grabowski Brecht. He is survived by a son, Timothy Brecht and his wife, Mary Jo, of Jeannette; two daughters, Jane Pohland and her husband, Douglas, of Latrobe and Joan Wagner and her husband, Paul, of Mt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren, Jessica, Martin, Mara and Alex Brecht, Allison and Kelly Pohland, Ryan and Christopher Wagner; a brother, Joseph Brecht and his wife, Betsy, of New Alexandria; two sisters, Kathryn Gustafson of Jeannette and Ellen Seanor and her husband, William, of Harrison City; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church with Father James H. Loew, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Jeannette Catholic Cemetery, Penn Township.
Eleanor Ruth (Lauffer) Cost, 82, of Marriottsville, Md., formerly of North Irwin, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Catonsville, Md. Born Jan. 25, 1917, in North Irwin, she was a daughter of the late Dr. William and Laura (Ayers) Lauffer. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Irwin. She was a 1935 graduate of Norwin High School, a 1939 graduate of Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon), and belonged to the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. From 1939 to 1941, she was a physical education and home economics teacher in the Norwin School District. She was past president of the Irwin Garden Club, founding member of the Irwin Women's Club and also a member of the Irwin Junior Women's Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Lauffer Hudson and Emma Helman; and a brother, William "Archie" Lauffer. She is survived by her husband, George W. Cost; two daughters, Nancy Selchan (husband, Allan) of Mansfield, Mass., and Sally H. Mowbray (husband, Vic) of Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada; a son, Terry Cost of Marriottsville, Md.; two brothers, Harmon Lauffer of Manor and Robert Lauffer of Bowie, Md.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m. at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin. Private interment
in Irwin Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norwin Public Library.
Anna Fanell, 77, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at home. She was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Unity Township, a daughter of the late Stephan and Anna Marchynak Prodin. She had worked for her son at Laurel Kennworth for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Delphine Ferrari; five brothers, Steve, Charles, Andy, Nicholas and Mike Prodin; and an infant sister, Mary. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Joseph Fanell; a son, Thomas Fanell and wife, Carol, of Greensburg; four grandchildren, Joseph Fanell, Robert Ferrari, Lisa Simonetta and Natalie Fanell; a great-granddaughter, Mia Simonetta; a brother, John Prodin and wife, Josephine, of Detroit, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends will be received at the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME, 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, (724) 837-0020., Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Panachida service will be held in the funeral home Friday at 10:15 a.m. with the Rev. Christopher R. Burke officiating, followed by Divine Liturgy at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Byzantine Church, Trauger. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Byzantine Cemetery, Trauger. Francis J. "Farmer" Friel, 83, of Latrobe, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. Born March 16, 1916, in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Dr. Francis J. and Jennie Daley Friel. He was a member of St. Rose Church, Latrobe, and the St. Rose Seniors. He was retired from Teledyne-Vasco, Latrobe, with 38 years of service. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of American Legion Post 982, Unity Township, VFW, Latrobe, AMVETS, Cooperstown Veterans and Sportsmen, St. Joseph Beneficial Society, Frontier Club, F.O.E. #01188, Latrobe Steel Retirees, Mended Hearts Club, Latrobe, and St. Vincent DePaul. He was a former member of the Latrobe Volunteer Fire Department with two years of service and was very active in fund-raisers for the fire department for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite A. Hostetler; and a brother, William Friel. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Gorr Friel; two daughters, Dyan and Joe Bush of Latrobe and Christine Hebrank and her husband, James "Dino," of Latrobe; two sisters, Annamae Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Gloria Torrero of Latrobe; four grandchildren, Jason Bush and his wife, Kristine, Aaron "Pete" Bush, Neil Hebrank and Steven Hebrank; a great-grandson, Zachery; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rose Church with the Rev. William P. Donahue as celebrant. Interment in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. Melvino "Animal" Grazetti, 42, of Scottdale, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his home. He was born July 3, 1957, in West Newton. Melvino, "Animal," was employed as an asphalt paver with McKee Asphalt of McKeesport. He is survived by his son, Melvin D. of Scottdale. Melvino, "Animal," was preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Augustine Grazetti, in 1997. A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Lowber Social Hall, Lowber. Helen Ann Naples, 69, of Jeannette, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. She was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Grapeville, a daughter of the late Theodore and Nellie Leschock Woloshun. Prior to her retirement, she was the owner and operator of the former Helen's Beauty Shoppe of Jeannette. She was a member of Ascension Church, Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Shefchek; and four brothers, Nick, Akum "Jake," Michael and John Woloshun. Surviving are her husband, James G. Naples; a son, Jay A. Naples and wife, Pamela, of Greensburg; two brothers, Andrew Woloshun of California and Harry Woloshun of Grapeville; four sisters, Sadie Bressnan of Jeannette, Anne Kaufman and husband, Theodore, of Florida, Pearl Smith of Jeannette and Eva Merslich and husband, Joseph, of Miami, Fla.; two granddaughters, Gia and Alexandra Naples; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Ascension Church. William W. Shoaf Jr., 77, of North Huntingdon, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Greensburg. He was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Herminie, a son of the late William W. Sr. and Anna (Morris) Shoaf. He had been employed as club steward by Jacktown Ride and Hunt Club for 35 years. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Irwin, and a graduate of Sewickley High School. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of VFW Post 8472 of Herminie. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth (Savko) Shoaf; a son, William W. Shoaf III (wife, Beth Ann) of Youngwood; a daughter, Linda Zimmerman (husband, David) of Trafford; a sister, Olive Cook of Herminie; two granddaughters, Rebecca Zimmerman and Brigette Sapko; and a great-grandson, Seth Sapko. Friends will be received Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, where services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robin Clouser officiating. Interment in Long Run Cemetery.
Bess Jane Tarbolette, 97, of Greensburg, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Dec. 13, 1902, on the North Side, Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late John Paul and Margaret O'Connor Sloan. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Daughters of America Council #9. She is survived by a son, Clyde Henry "Bud" Tarbolette of Greensburg; and a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Allshouse of Greensburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Tarbolette; and an infant son, James Francis Tarbolette. Private funeral service will be held Wednesday with the Rev. Jeffrey Paschal officiating. Interment in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. Alvin P.
