Marion J. Tucci, 71, of West Newton, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Forbes Regional Health Center, Monroeville. She was born Nov. 30, 1928, in McKeesport, a daughter of the late Evan and Mary Henry Pugh. She was a 1946 graduate of McKeesport High School and had worked as a waitress for the former Club Car Diner, McKeesport, and at Woody's, North Versailles. She is survived by four daughters, Patti Hurlbut of North Versailles, Sandra Janus of West Newton, Kimberly Tucci of North Versailles and Marty Essay of Irwin; three sisters, Margaret Smith of McKeesport, Gwen Little of Fontana, Calif., and Evelyn Antonelli of Elizabeth Township; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at STRIFFLERS' OF WHITE OAK, where services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. Entombment West Newton Mausoleum.
Miriam Lowenstein Witkin, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., formerly of Latrobe, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in her 95th year. Loving mother of Nanette Witkin of Rockport, Mass., and Mark Witkin of Chestnut Hill, Mass. Dear grandmother of Lisa Allen, Abby Witkin and David Witkin. A funeral service will be held at the HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe, Friday at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at the B'Nai Israel Cemetery, Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of her loving caregiver, Hariklia Palogaris, donations in Miriam's memory may be sent to Holy Transfiguration Monastery, 278 Warren St., Brookline, MA 02446. Memorial observance will be private.
John "Big John" Azman, 78, of New Alexandria, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in the Loyalhanna Care Center in Latrobe. He was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late John and Anna Oshman Azman. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard on the Coast Guard Cutter TAMPA. He retired from WTAE-TV, Hearst Corp., where he was an engineer. He was a member of the Community United Presbyterian Church of New Alexandria. He is survived by a friend, Joyce Azman; a daughter, Alissa A. Berry; a grandson, Noah Berry; and a granddaughter, Emily Berry, all of New Alexandria; a stepdaughter, Diane E. Latusek of New Alexandria; a stepson, Raymond M. Meleski of Tiverton, R.I.; seven step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Friday from 2 until 8:30 p.m., the time of service, at the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets in New Alexandria. The Rev. Terry J. Carnahan will officiate at the service. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery in New Alexandria.
Helen G. Brant, 89, of Latrobe, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Feb. 9, 1910, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late Homer and Irene Newingham Allison. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Latrobe, and its Senior Citizens Group. She graduated from Latrobe Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1935, and was retired from Latrobe Area Hospital as a registered nurse. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Wilbert J. Brant; and a brother, Kenneth Allison. Survived by a son, Donald W. Brant and his wife, Mary Ann, of Latrobe; a brother, Edward Allison and his wife, Jane, of Hillside; a sister-in-law, Julia Allison of Hillside; two grandchildren, Darlene Allshouse and her husband, Sam, and Ronald W. Brant and his wife, Wendy; three great-grandchildren, Timothy Allshouse, Lindsey Brant, and Dustin Brant; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Service Saturday at 10 a.m. in Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. August B. Twigg officiating. Interment Coles Cemetery, Derry Township.
John E. Eberhardt, 79, of Claridge, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was born July 30, 1920, in Irwin, a son of the late John and Frances Shebek Eberhardt. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 30 years at GM Fisher Body Works in Dravosburg. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Irwin. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the 45th Infantry Division and awarded the European African Service Medal with six Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead. Also, he was a life member of the following: the Manor American Legion Post #472, the VFW of Mt. Pleasant, Claridge Volunteer Fire Department, and the 45th Infantry Division Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Slifkey Eberhardt, in 1976. Survived by a son, Ronald and wife, Joann Eberhardt, of Jeannette; a brother, Franklin W. Eberhardt of Zelienople; and two grandsons, Jason and Jonathan. Friends will be received at the JAMES E. LINDSAY FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Harrison City, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Frederick B. Zikeli officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Penn Township. The Manor American Legion will hold services Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 615 S. Main St., Greensburg, PA 15601.
George H. Harris, 77, of Murrysville, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in the Forbes Regional Health Center, Monroeville. He was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Bowersville, a son of the late Alexander and Grace Fitzhonts Harris. He was a retired electrical engineer with U.S. Steel, Rankin, with 28 years of service. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Homer City and the VFW of Delmont; and was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Ione Myers Harris; a son, Dennis Harris of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Hill of Delmont; four brothers, Walter of Homer City, Alexander of Mentor, Ohio, and William and Richard, both of Homer City; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville. A service will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow in the Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont. If desired, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
William H. "Red" Kersten Sr., 83, of Manning, S.C., (formerly of Delmont), died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in the National Health Care Facility, Sumter, S.C. He was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Delmont, a son of the late William H. and Ella Morgan Kersten. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a pipe fitter at Westinghouse Electric in East Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Delmont. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther E. Martz Kersten, in 1980; and by two brothers and two sisters: Fred, Alice, and Earl Leroy Kersten, and Anna Blumen. He is survived by a son, William H. Kersten Jr. and his wife, Bea, of Jeannette; two daughters, Royetta R. Shick and her husband, Donald, of Manning, S.C., with whom he made his home, and Margaret Louise "Peggy Lou" Kovalchuck of Troy, Mich.; a brother, Harold Kersten and his wife, Mercene, of Washington, Pa.; five sisters, Ruth Kisow and her husband, Ernie, of Canonsburg, Betty Van Kirk of Eightyfour, Laura Morgan of Wilmington, Del., Becky Zabatosky and her husband, John, of Canonsburg, and Nancy Pozonsky and her husband, Bob, of Muse; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Kersten's family will receive friends at the JOHN L. Donald M. Laughlin, 76, of Blairsville RD3 (Derry Township), died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at IHS at Mountain View, Unity Township. A son of Homer and Olive Ressler Laughlin, he was born Dec. 8, 1923, in Derry Township. Mr. Laughlin was a member of the United Steelworkers of America #1537, Latrobe Sportsmen's Club, National Rifle Association and the VFW Post #5821, Blairsville. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed by Latrobe Steel for 24 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He is survived by his wife, Mildred E. Mack Speedy Laughlin; two sons, Bruce Laughlin of Derry and Jeffrey Laughlin and his wife, Susan, of Greensburg; three daughters, Mrs. David (Donna) Bures of Blairsville RD3, Mrs. Byron "Bud" (Vicki) Smith of Derry and Kristine Bendel of Gillette, Wis.; two stepsons, David Speedy and his wife, Kathy, of Franklin, Ind., and Brian Speedy and his wife, Cristen, of Lower Burrell; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Bill (Margie) Book of Murrysville and Connie Speedy of Glen Burnie, Md.; 17 grandchildren; two brothers, Sherman Laughlin and Homer "Cliff" Laughlin, both of Blairsville RD3; and a sister, Mrs. Anna May Clawson of Blairsville. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Doris M. Newell Laughlin; and an infant daughter, Sharon. The family will receive friends at the RICHARD L. SHOEMAKER FUNERAL HOME, 49 N. Thomas L. McKenna Jr., 74, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Elyria, Ohio, and North Irwin, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in Bradenton. He was born Aug. 25, 1925, in North Irwin, the son of the late Thomas L. and Barbara Hensler McKenna. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the B.P.O.E. #2313 of Norwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Meikle McKenna. Surviving are three children, Lee Lander of Elyria, Ohio, Thomas G. McKenna of Medina, Ohio, and Scott McKenna of Overland, Ohio; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Ann McIntyre; an aunt, Phyllis Lomicka of North Irwin; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services are in the charge of the Toale Funeral Home, Florida, announced by the JOSEPH F. OTT FUNERAL HOME INC., Irwin.
Betty Lou Long, 52, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in the Westmoreland Manor, Hempfield Township. She was born March 25, 1947, in Greensburg, a daughter of Bjarnfridur G. Valdmarsdottir Mehan of Hannastown and the late Andrew Mehan. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Richard A. Vuletich of Greensburg; four daughters, Elizabeth A. and her husband, George Gergley, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Mary Kay and her husband, Joe Elias, of Forbes Road, Debbie Vuletich of Carlisle and Doreena Vuletich of Greensburg; five grandchildren, Kayla, Brian, Lauren, George and Alex; a brother, Andrew Mehan Jr. of Hannastown; six sisters, Stella Donaldsdottir of Iceland, Mary Ann Wilson of Youngwood, Augusta Block of Florida, Rose Campbell of Maryland, Deborah Berger of Hannastown and Christine Mehan of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Friday at 1 p.m. in the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, with the Rev. Craig T. Hess officiating.
