Darlene S. Messner, 67, formerly of West Newton and Youngwood, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Columbia, S.C. She was born April 30, 1932, in West Newton, a daughter of the late Walter J. and Anna Kirshner Skolskie. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Messner, in 1988; and a brother, Walter W. Skolskie. She was a former member of the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Youngwood and the Women's Guild of the church. Surviving are her son, David B. Messner, and a grandson, Joshua D. Messner, both of Columbia, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Youngwood. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in Holy Cross R.C. Church, Youngwood, with the Rev. Father John S. Szczesny as celebrant. Interment to follow in West Newton Cemetery.
Robert J. Smith, 75, of Jeannette, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in the Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 5, 1924, in Jeannette, a son of the late Ralph E. and Inez D. Zanarini Smith. Prior to his retirement in 1982, he was the owner/operator of the Bob Smith Florist Shop of Irwin. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Force, a former member of the Irwin Lions and Irwin VFW, and was an avid horseman. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor McAllister; and his mother- and father-in-law, Charles and Lena Marchetti. He is survived by his wife, June Marchetti Smith; two brothers, James Smith and wife, Joyce, of Ligonier and Ralph Smith and wife, Sylvia, of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Fay DiGangi and her husband, Alan, of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Rita J. Dodds of Penn Hills and Edith Marchetti of Jeannette; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, beginning Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Nicholas A. Mitolo officiating. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township.
Jon A. "Jack" Del Vecchio, 61, of Greensburg, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born June 15, 1938, in Greensburg, a son of the late Perry and Florence "Ted" Walthour Del Vecchio. He formerly had been the golf pro at the Greensburg Country Club and later at Robertshaw Acres. He was a graduate of St. Vincent College. He is survived by his wife, Margaret A. "Peggy" (Poteste) Del Vecchio; seven children, Michael Del Vecchio, Christopher Del Vecchio, Dana Farthing, Richard Hellmann, Laurie Hellmann, James Hellmann and Robin Hellmann; two sisters, Joan Silvis and Barbara Schlirf, both of Greensburg; a brother, Perry Del Vecchio of Mentor, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Robert Poteste of Greensburg; several grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. There will be no public visitation. Interment will be private. Family suggests memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Penn Center Blvd., Suite 700, Pittsburgh, PA 15235. James A. Martin, 49, of Delmont, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 23, 1950, in Pittsburgh, a son of Betty Noah Martin Cochran of Delmont and the late Donald R. Martin. He was employed as a piece worker at the ARC Adult Vocational Center in Greensburg. In addition to his father, who died in 1956, he was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Bass, in 1980; and by his stepfather, Lee Harold Cochran, in 1975. In addition to his mother, he is survived by three brothers and a sister, Donald R. Martin and his wife, Dolores, of Warren, Ohio, Cynthia L. Martin-DeUnger and her husband, Joe, of Philadelphia, Lee H. Cochran and his wife, Debbie, of Lower Burrell, and Scott A. Cochran of Delmont; and by a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Martin's family will receive friends at the JOHN L. BASH FUNERAL HOME, 152 Abbe Place, Delmont, (724) 468-8381, Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral home hours: Friday 2:00-9:00 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Ignatius S. "Iggy" Palcic, 76, of Mammoth, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Mammoth, a son of the late Ignac S. and Mary E. (Repiscak) Palcic. He was the owner and operator of Palcic's Service Station in Mammoth. He was a member and usher of the St. Florian Catholic Church, United, and was a graduate of Hurst High School, Class of 1942. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star while serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Skovira and Kay F. Palcic; and a brother, Stephen R. Palcic. He is survived by a brother, George E. Palcic and wife, Martha, of Mammoth; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Pauline) Newell of Greensburg, Mrs. Michael (Mary) Tandaric of Mammoth, Margaret A. "Marge" Palcic and Agnes L. Palcic, both at home; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends will be received at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Pleasant Unity, Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 12:30 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in St. Florian Catholic Church, United, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John M. Foriska as celebrant. Military services and interment
will follow in St. Florian Catholic Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Township. A parish wake service will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
Martha J. Smelko, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born Dec. 27, 1918, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late John Jr. and Anna Greger Smelko. She was a member of the Visitation Roman Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant. Miss Smelko was a 65-year member of the Visitation Parish Choir and a member of the Visitation Parish Rosary Society. She is survived by her loving brother, Thomas J. Smelko and his wife, Irene, of Mt. Pleasant; and nieces and nephews, Janice Pakulsky, Alan Smelko, Dr. John T. Smelko, Jeannine Anderson, Dr. Karl Kozak and Brian Kozak. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Kozak, in 1994. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at GALONE-CARUSO'S, 204 Eagle St., Mt. Pleasant. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Anthony W. Ditto as celebrant. Interment in Visitation Parish Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Visitation Parish Rosary Society will recite the rosary in the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Robert John Soles, 50, of Greensburg, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born June 25, 1949, in Greensburg, a son of Raymond and Elizabeth Agresti Soles of Grapeville. He had been employed by the Elliott Co. of Jeannette. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg; a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps; and was a member of Union Local #1145 of Jeannette. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Denise Prisani Soles; a son, Brian John Soles, and two daughters, Nicole and Angela Soles, all at home; a brother, Raymond Roger and his wife, Juliana Soles, of Bovard; his mother-in-law, Mary Prisani of Bovard; two sisters-in-law, Kathy and her husband, John Smith, of Greensburg and Bernadette Mowen of Bovard; two nieces and two nephews; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Monday at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg. Interment with military honors provided by the VFW Post #33 Honor Guard of Greensburg will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township.
Lewis G. Stipanovich, 50, of Ligonier, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. Born in Greensburg, Feb. 11, 1949, he was the son of Jean Zilli Stipanovich of Greensburg and the late Eli Stipanovich. A self-employed painter, he was Catholic by faith, and a member of the NRA. He was a Vietnam war veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Shari Buhler Stipanovich; two children, Laura Jean Stipanovich of North Carolina and Lee Jacob Stipanovich of Latrobe; a granddaughter, Kallie Lynn Stipanovich of North Carolina; three sisters, Linda Zabish of Atlanta, Ga., Lesley Jones and husband, Bill, and Laurie Turnbull and husband, Tom, all of Ligonier; and nieces and nephews, Lauren and Courtney Jones and Tom and Joshua Turnbull. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, Greensburg. Entombment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum. Michael J. "Mayor" Gates Jr., 76, of Madison, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at his home. He was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Yukon, a son of the late Michael J. Sr. and Mary Kovatch Gates. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by PennDOT as a foreman. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Marines, 4th Division, in the Pacific Theater, where he was the recipient of the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He was a former member of the Seven Dolors Roman Catholic Church, Yukon, and was a member of the Mon Valley Leatherneck Association, the Yukon Volunteer Fire Co., the Yukon S.N.P.J. Lodge 729, and numerous other organizations. He was also an avid lover of flowers and enjoyed raising sheep. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bess Wolfgang Gates; a son, Joseph A. Gates; and a brother, John Gates. Surviving is a daughter, Linda Marie Gates of Florida. He was the beloved brother of Mrs. Martha K. Yurcak and her husband, John, of Yukon, Rose "Diddy" Yannacci of Yukon, Mrs. Geraldine Greene and her husband, Clarence, of Yukon, Mrs. Mary Rose O'Masta and her husband, Mark, of Smithton, and Nancy Pidanich of Madison; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BEATTY-RICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 136, Madison, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in the Seven Dolors Roman Catholic Church, Yukon, with Father Paul R. Stivason as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Seven Dolors Church Cemetery, South Huntingdon Township, with full military rites accorded by the Mon Valley Leatherneck Association.
Michael S. Marino, 81, of Greensburg, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born March 4, 1918, in Greensburg, a son of the late Nicola and Antonia Paglia Marino. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by RobertShaw Fulton Controls. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church, where he was an usher. Michael enjoyed the arts and was a member of the Greensburg Civic Theater, the Friday Evening Music Club in Greensburg and the Westmoreland Symphony Association. He was also associated with the volunteer organization of Westmoreland Manor at the snack bar. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant with the 629th Tank Destroyer Battalion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Spino; and three brothers, Daniel, Peter and George Marino. He is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Angelo A. Sembiante of Greensburg; a sister, Rose Plundo and husband, Mario, and a brother, Joseph A. Marino and wife, Margaret, all of Greensburg; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
