Nancy M. Bauer, 72, of Scottdale RD2 (Old Meadow), passed away Tuesday morning, Feb. 1, 2000, in Scottdale Manor & Rehabilitation Center, East Huntingdon Township. Nancy was born in Scottdale, May 18, 1927, a daughter of the late B. Franklin and Eva Roberta Ridgeway Williams, who passed away in 1973 and 1985, respectively. Nancy was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother to her family. She was affiliated with the Jacobs Creek United Methodist Church and was a former troop leader with the Jacobs Creek United Methodist Church Brownie Troop #81. Nancy graduated from East Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1945 and Durbin's Secretarial School. Nancy is survived by her loving family; two daughters, Susan J. Ware and husband, Keith, of Ruffsdale RD1 and Johnna L. "Jay" Bauer of Scottdale RD2; three grandchildren, Jason M. Ware, Zachary T. Ware and Savannah Johnell Kennick; two sisters, Roberta Shupe and husband, George, of Scottdale and Cynthia Hough of Scottdale RD1; a brother, John Williams and wife, Millie, of Clearwater, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and her special extended family, Aaron and Matt Kaminsky and Melinda and Jeffrey Shiery. In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, John L. "Jr." Bauer, on June 30, 1998. Receiving of family and friends will be held Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. in the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale, (724) 887-5300. A personalized memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Siglinde L. Becker facilitating. Private inurnment will follow in Scottdale Cemetery, next to her late husband. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to: American Cancer Society (call toll free 1-800-227-2345) in memory of Nancy M. Bauer.
George Nathaniel Carlson, 100, of Irwin, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born in Hahntown, Feb. 6, 1899, he was a son of the late August and Mathilda (Kristoffer) Carlson. Prior to retirement, he had been employed as a machine operator by Westinghouse Air Brake, Wilmerding, where he worked for 40 years. He was a member and elder emeritus of the United Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, Irwin, and also served a number of years as trustee and treasurer of the church. He was also a member of the L.O.O.M. #236, Irwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (McElroy) Carlson; two brothers, Oscar and John Carlson; and three sisters, Signa Woodlard, Helga Siegel and Anna Neiman. He is survived by a daughter, Audrey Pealstrom and her husband, Richard, of North Huntingdon; two grandchildren, Keith Pealstrom and wife, Maria, of Westmoreland City and Kirsten (Pealstrom) Colen and husband, Rod, of Reston, Va.; and four great-grandchildren, Erika and Dustin Pealstrom, Stephanie and Jonathan Colen. Friends will be received at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John C. Pressler officiating. Interment in Irwin Union Cemetery.
Barbara E. "Babs" (Loughner) Curry, 75, of Export, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, in her home. She was born March 10, 1924, in Mamont, a daughter of the late Edwin and Vernie May (Hall) Loughner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Weiss; a son, Donald F. Weiss; three brothers, Walter, Glenn and Edwin Loughner; and a sister, Loretta Rhodahaver. Barbara is survived by her husband, James P. Curry of Export; two sons, James Curry and wife, Grace, of Dormont, and Fred Weiss and wife, Lois, of Pittsburgh; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Weiss of Export; three brothers, Donald Loughner of Vandergrift, Charles Loughner of Kittanning, and Frank Loughner of Mamont; and a sister, Dorothy June Pelligrino of Delmont. In addition, she is survived by five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the VAIA FUNERAL HOME INC. AT TWIN VALLEY, 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, PA 15626, (724) 468-1177, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Barbara's funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Frederick Heitzenroder, of the Salem Lutheran Church, Delmont, officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Export. Kevin P. Altman, supervisor, in charge of arrangements.
Mary M. Flowers, 78, of Jeannette, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Henry and Edna Anderson Cramer. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur W. Flowers; seven brothers, Bill, Paul, Jake, Jim, Bob, Henry and Earl Cramer; and five sisters, Mae Belle Wightman, Grace Yeskey, Violet Booker, Bertie Mentch and Cleva Cramer. She is survived by four sons, Wilbur W. III and his wife, Sandie, of Edgewater, Md., Richard and his wife, Nance, of Bristol, R.I., Victor and his wife, Ida Mae, of Tionesta, and Mark and his wife, Sheila, of Kalispell, Mont.; three daughters, Linda Kifer and her husband, Jim, of Jeannette, Donna Bernsten of Phoenix, Ariz., and Denise Poole and her husband, Russ, of Jeannette; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Laura Waibel of New Alexandria; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Daniel R. Defassio officiating. Interment will follow in the Jeannette Memorial Park, Penn Township.
Walter E. Herr Jr., 72, of Youngwood, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Nov. 26, 1927, in Beaver Falls, a son of the late Walter E. Sr. and Nellie Bolt Herr. Prior to retirement, he had been employed by the Robertshaw Controls, New Stanton; had served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict; was a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh; and was a former radio announcer for WHJB radio station, Greensburg. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. (Bevan) Smolka Herr; a son, Michael F. Smolka Jr. of Southwest Greensburg; two daughters, Janet and her husband, Clifford Schweinsburg Jr., of New Stanton and Diane and her husband, David Allen, of Southwest Greensburg; three grandsons, Brandon Smolka, Michael Smolka and Clifford Schweinsburg III; and a sister, Geraldine Maddox of South Pasadena, Calif. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. James H. Nash officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the VFW Post 33 Honor Guard will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. Ione Loretta Jensen, 81, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, in Redstone Highlands, Greensburg. She was born April 25, 1918, in Lyndonville, N.Y., a daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Meland. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Women's Association of the church. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star William Gelston Chapter #435. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Ruth Meland; her husband, Richard C. Jensen; and a brother, Ellsworth Meland. Surviving are her son, William R. Jensen and wife, Mary, of Truckee, Calif.; sisters, Hilda McFadden and Wilma Wolf, both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Services will be held at the funeral home Friday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Randall Roda officiating. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. The family wishes memorials to either the Redstone Highlands, 6 Garden Center Drive, Greensburg, or First United Methodist Church, 15 E. Second St., Greensburg.
Erma Jean Miller, 73, of Mt. Pleasant, went to be with her Lord at the Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer. Erma Jean was born Oct. 1, 1926, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late Richard and Bertha Minerd Reese. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren; and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post 3368 and the American Legion Post 446. She was a former student of the Mt. Pleasant School and was a member of the Multi-Service Senior Citizens Center. She was a gardener and grew many varieties of flowers. She was a homemaker and the loving mother of four daughters, Ruth Jean Vernon, Karen Sirianni and husband, Tony, and Gail Geyer and husband, Thomas, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Reida Miller at home. Also, she has three granddaughters, Lisa Leighliter, Melissa Vernon, and Gina Geyer; a brother, James Reese and wife, Janet, of Mt. Pleasant; and two sisters, Gladys Balcerek of Mt. Pleasant and Alice Balestrieri of Greensburg. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Reid George Miller, in 1991; four brothers, Charles, Donald, Richard and William Reese; and two sisters, Sabina Borza and Clara Reese. Friends will be received in the EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Erma Jean's funeral will be held in the funeral home Friday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. with her pastor, the Rev. Henry G. Landis, officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Joy Cemetery. The Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW will hold services in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by services by the American Legion Auxiliary.
Roy E. Shaw, 81, of New Stanton, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Youngwood, a son of the late Albert L. and Nettie Barnhart Shaw. He was retired from RobertShaw Controls, New Stanton. He was a member of the New Stanton United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a Commander of the Youngwood Lancers Drum & Bugle Corps, the VFW Post #211, Youngwood, and the RobertShaw Retirees. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Shaw; a brother, Albert Shaw; and a grandson, Kris David Cortazzo. He is survived by a son, Roy A. Shaw and wife, Rosemary, of Martinsburg, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Carmine (Denise) Cortazzo of Home, Pa.; five grandchildren, Julie and Michael Shaw, and Cori, Beth and Scott Cortazzo; and a sister, Ethel Long of Youngwood. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Youngwood, where a funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Eric R. Detar officiating. Interment St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg.
Hazel Marie Olschon Umbarger, 84, of Edinboro, formerly of West Newton, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Edinboro Manor. She was born in West Newton June 13, 1915, a daughter of the late Samuel and Mary Lau Olschon. She was a homemaker, and a member of the West Newton Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Umbarger Sr., on June 14, 1992; four brothers, Samuel, William, Vincent and John Olschon; and three sisters, Margaret Marino, Stella Lauder and Mary Urinsco. She is survived by her son, Harold Umbarger Jr., of Edinboro. No calling hours will be observed. Burial will be at West Newton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. The GLUNT FUNERAL HOME INC., 210 Erie St., Edinboro, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Marion Learn Van Horn, 83, of Export, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000. She was born July 9, 1916, in Indiana, Pa., a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Learn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John S. Van Horn. Mrs. Van Horn was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Export. She is survived by a son, Donald Van Horn and wife, Nora, of Murrysville; three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Ellen) Ruzbarsky of Murrysville, Mrs. Paul (Carol) Graf and Mrs. Carl (Sandra) Barone, both of Penn Hills; two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Ruth) Van Horn of Plum Borough and Rosella Hill of Indiana, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the EDWIN N. WOLFE FUNERAL HOME INC., Export, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gregory B. Held officiating. Interment Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
