Dorothy S. (Marsico) Arteritano, 96, of Vandergrift, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, in West Haven Nursing Home, Washington Township. Born in Cocenza, Italy, Dec. 14, 1903, she was a daughter of the late Guy and Maria (Ferraro) Marsico. She lived in Vandergrift most of her life. She was a member of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church in Vandergrift, Catholic Daughters of America, Ladies Lodge Sons of Italy and a member and promoter of the Altar Rosary Society for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph G. Arteritano, on June 14, 1964; a brother, Fiovo Marsico; and three sisters, Matilda Schmick, Belinda Paese and Mary Kane. She is survived by two sons, Dominick Arteritano of Vandergrift and Joseph G. Arteritano of Lower Burrell; a daughter, Mrs. Marino (Rita) Manganello of Vandergrift; a brother, Herman Marsico of Harrisburg; a sister, Rachel Pierce of Harrisburg; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Friday from 1:30 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the BRADY-CURRAN FUNERAL HOME INC., 429 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church in Vandergrift with the Rev. Thaddeus Rettger as celebrant. Interment in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Vandergrift. The Serra Club will recite the rosary at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mary (Beter) Bryan, 86, formerly of Irwin, a longtime resident of El Paso, Texas, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at her residence. She was born Jan. 17, 1914, in Irwin, a daughter of the late Esper and Mary (Obade) Beter. She was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church and the Order of Eastern Star, Las Cruces, N.M., Chapter 20. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Bryan. Survived by a son, Robert Bryan and wife, Eileen, of Morristown, N.J.; a daughter, Barbara Whittenton and husband, Jesse, of Santa Teresa, N.M.; three brothers, Albert Beter of Irwin, Thomas Beter of Upper Burrell, and Richard Beter of Irwin; three sisters, Elizabeth Sam of Irwin, Helen Jacobs of McKeesport, and Virginia DiPrimo of Irwin; three grandchildren, Kimberly Wilkie, Michelle Evans and Cameron Bryan; a great-grandson, Robert J. Wilkie; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a former son-in-law, Charles Evans of El Paso, Texas. Friends will be received at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with Trisagion services at 8 p.m. Service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Orthodox Church in Greensburg with Father John Nosal officiating. Wesley LeVerne Burton Jr., 65, of Arnold (Westmoreland County), died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, in Citizens General Hospital, New Kensington. He was born Nov. 15, 1934, in Tarentum. He had lived in this vicinity all his life. He worked as a refurb mechanic at Westinghouse, EMD Division in Cheswick, for 24 years before retiring in 1995. Mr. Burton was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Handyman Association. He enjoyed woodworking and watching television. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Judith L. Snyder Burton; four sons, Michael W. Burton of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert D. Burton of Ellvella, Ga., Wesley L. Burton III of Frazer Township, and Nelson E. Burton of Tarentum; four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Luella) Burford of Tarentum, Mrs. Robert (Judith) Layhew of Frazer Township, Mary Coudriet of New Kensington, and Lisa D. Burton of Lower Burrell; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Burton of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Nelson Burton of New Kensington; and a sister, Mrs. Jack (Dorothy) Sober of Natrona Heights. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wessley L. Sr. and Luella Elizabeth Mason Burton. Family and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the ROBERT PETERS FUNERAL HOME INC., 1521 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, with the Rev. E. Phillip Wilson, of Arnold United Methodist Church, Arnold, and the Rev. Richard Wood, of the Christian Missionary Alliance, New Kensington, co-officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. H. Louise (Lerch) Elder, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at her home. She was born April 27, 1920, in South Greensburg, and was the daughter of the late Fred and Olive Lerch. Louise was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Greensburg for 58 years and a member of the Builders Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John "Jack" Lerch; a son-in-law, John T. Grace; and a sister-in-law, Fern Elder. Louise is survived by her husband of 58 years, J. Richard "Dick" Elder; and her loving children, Karen L. Grace of Greensburg, Dr. James R. Elder and wife, Barbara, of Puyallup, Wash., and Gary A. Elder and wife, Linda, of Parsonsburg, Md. Louise was a special grandmother to Brian Grace and wife, Vikki, of Raleigh, N.C., Dr. Mark R. Grace and wife, Dr. Kristine Grace, of Seattle, Wash., Doug, Kevin, and Trisha Elder, all of Seattle, Wash., and Erin Elder of Parsonsburg, Md.; great-grandchildren, Alicia and Tommy Grace of Raleigh, N.C.; and expected infant, Joshua Grace, of Seattle Wash. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, O. Pat Elder; sister-in-law, Nancy Roddy and husband, Dale; sister-in-law, Eleanor Lerch; and many nieces and nephews. Louise was a truly special wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and aunt. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Carenda Baker and the Rev. Jay S. Pifer co-officiating. Gertrude Shaw Handlan, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born in Greensburg, a daughter of the late George U. and Carrie Fait Shaw. She was a former employee of Westmoreland Regional Hospital and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold T. Handlan; two sons, Harold S. Handlan and Jerry K. Handlan; and a grandson, Kerry S. Handlan. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joan Thomas and her husband, William, of Greensburg and Mrs. Judith Webber and her husband, John, of Buffalo, N.Y.; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Marian Handlan and Mrs. Ann Handlan, both of Greensburg; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the COSHEY-NICHOLSON FUNERAL HOME INC., 319 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, with the Rev. Robert C. Wilson officiating. Helen I. Knipple, 81, of Glenada Avenue, Scottdale, passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 8, 2000, in Harmon House Convalescent Center, Mt. Pleasant. Helen was born in Latrobe, May 18, 1918, a daughter of the late Fred William and Genevieve Harr Morrow, who passed away in 1945 and 1932, respectively. Helen was a loving homemaker, mother, and grandmother to her family. She was a member of Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Scottdale and was a former Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and member of the Ladies Organization of the church. Years ago, Helen was an active member of the Uncle Charlie's Bowling League and a member of the Scottdale Women's Garden Club. Helen is survived by her loving family, her three children, Nancy Sherbondy and her husband, Jack, of Scottdale, Ronald Knipple and his wife, Marge, of Scottdale, and Donna Pleva and her husband, Raymond, of Vanderbilt; her eight grandchildren, Cindy Pocratsky and her husband, Richard, of Scottdale, Vicki Hribal and her husband, Alan, of Scottdale, Scott Kippel and his wife, DeLaine, of Dawson RD1, Kristin Breakiron and her husband, Jack, of Scottdale, Allison Pleva and her friend, Bob, of Belle Vernon, Raymond Pleva Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Murrysville, Richard Pleva of Boston, Mass., and Melissa Pleva of Hartford, Conn.; her nine great-grandchildren, Aliesha and Briana Pocratsky, Jill Porter, AJ Hribal, Alex Byers, Branden Kippel, Blake Breakiron, Colleen and Vincent Pleva; her great-great-grandson, Karson Porter; and her brother, James Morrow and his wife, Myrtle, of Wichita Falls, Texas. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy H. Knipple, on Nov. 23, 1982; and her brother, Ralph Morrow. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. Eustasha M. Markiewicz, 87, of Latrobe, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, in IHS at Mountain View, Unity Township. She was born Sept. 20, 1912, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late John and Katherine Staramiejska Markiewicz. Eustasha "Stasha" started in the retail business in 1929 as an employee of the former Keystone Ladies Shop, owned by her mother. In 1933, Eustasha opened the Keystone Department Store at 119 Depot St. in Latrobe, selling general merchandise. In 1970, Stasha closed the store on Oct. 3, after 41 years as a retailer, and retired at the age of 58. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, and its Rosary Society; a volunteer and board member of the Latrobe Area Historical Society; a member of the Loyal Christian Benefit Association; and the Civic Club, Art Club, and Garden Club, all of Latrobe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Francis Markiewicz. Survived by two sons, Raymond Markiewicz and David Markiewicz and his wife, Dianna, all of Latrobe; a brother, Eugene Markiewicz of Latrobe; three grandchildren, Daniel, Douglas, and Dawn Markiewicz; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Newton C. Baker, 81, of Trafford, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in the ManorCare Health Services, Monroeville. He was born Sept. 25, 1918, in Pitcairn, a son of the late Clarence and Nellie Nicol Baker. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He was a retired salesman with the Olivetti Corp. and by Dresbold Business Machines Co. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Trafford, and an elder and clerk of session within the church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater for over four years in the 27th Infantry, earning a Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion Post #331 of Trafford, a charter member of the Trafford Lions Club for more than 40 years in which he was past president and secretary, a member of the Masonic Lodge #613, Duquesne Commandery #72, and the Valley Royal Arch Chapter #289. He was on the Salvation Army Board in Trafford and a member of the Board of Directors of the Trafford Public Library and a director of the United Way of Westmoreland County. He is survived by his wife, Lois King Baker; a son, James and his wife, Janis Baker, of Level Green; two brothers, John Baker of Penn Hills and Harold Baker of Largo, Fla.; and a sister, Leila Corcoran of Cornwall, Pa. Friends will be received at the JOHN M. DOBRINICK FUNERAL HOME, 429 Duquesne Ave., Trafford, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Carlisle V. Lloyd officiating. Interment will follow in the Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont. Trafford Senior Citizens will hold service Friday at 1:30 p.m., the Trafford American Legion will hold service Friday at 7 p.m., and the Trafford Lions Club will hold a memorial service Friday at 8 p.m., all in the funeral home.
Mary Ann Bowman, 83, of Delaware Avenue, Scottdale, passed away Thursday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2000, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. Mary was born in Olyphant, Pa., June 17, 1916, a daughter of the late John and Catherine Kaugundo Cwynar. Mary was a longtime resident of the Pinetree area of Scottdale. She married her late husband, Edward L. Bowman, on June 29, 1934, in Alverton and was a loving homemaker, mother, and grandmother to her family. She was also a member of Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Scottdale. Mary is survived by her loving family, her children, Edward J. Bowman and his wife, Sara Jane, of Lutz, Fla., Betty E. (Bowman) Tamblyn and her husband, Thomas, of Scottdale, Thomas G. Bowman and his wife, Jean, of Connellsville RD1, Ronald L. Bowman of Scottdale, and Mary Lou (Bowman) Cichocki and her husband, Eliot, of Scottdale; her grandchildren, Tina Marie Langle, Bonnie Caravan, Carol Arens, Edward E. Bowman, Richard Bowman, Thomas Tamblyn, Debbie Tamblyn, Kevin Tamblyn, Lea Ann Queer, Betty Eutsey, Colette Trader, Clinton Bowman, Christine Wagers, Clayton Bowman, and Amanda Cichocki; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mary was the last surviving member of the John and Catherine Kaugundo Cwynar family. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Bowman on March 19, 1993; a son, Glenn Richard Bowman; and five brothers, Joseph, Stanley, Anthony, Matthew, and Henry Cwynar. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. George A. Colaizzi, 57, of Murrysville, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was born March 23, 1942, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late George and Rose Petote Collins. He was an administrator for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit with 32 years of service and also was the athletic director and basketball coach for the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, Swissvale, for the past 32 years. He was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Church, Murrysville. Survived by his wife, Mary Manesiotis Colaizzi; two sons, Christopher and Stephen, both at home; a brother, John Colaizzi and his wife, Lucy, of Delmont; a niece, Erica Colaizzi; and a nephew, Louis Colaizzi. Visitation Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in the Mother of Sorrows Church, Murrysville. Entombment will follow in the Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
