Mary R. (Baluh) Hawse, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Harmon House Convalescent Center, Mt. Pleasant. She was born July 8, 1907, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Gonda Baluh. She was a member of Visitation Roman Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Hawse had worked prior to her retirement as a cook at the former Roma Room Restaurant of Mt. Pleasant. She was a member of the Visitation Holy Rosary Society and Christian Mothers, and a member of the First Catholic Slovak Union Branch #44. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer E. Hawse, in 1953. Survived by her son, Elmer Richard Hawse Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of St. Charles, Mo.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Margaret Rutherford of Uniontown and Martha Palanko and her husband, James, of Mt. Pleasant. In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Edward R. Hawse Sr., in 1998; and nine brothers, Joseph, Raymond, Richard, Robert, Paul, Michael, Steve, John, and George Baluh. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at GALONE-CARUSO'S, 204 Eagle St., Mt. Pleasant. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Visitation R.C. Church, Mt. Pleasant, Monday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Anthony W. Ditto as celebrant. A parish rosary will be recited in the funeral home Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Interment Visitation Parish Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
Esther V. Kemerer, 88, of Jeannette, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in the Golden Heights Personal Care Home, Penn Township. She was born Feb. 13, 1911, in Penn, a daughter of the late Mike and Melinda Smith Kifer. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Jeannette. During the war, she was employed by the former General Tire of Jeannette, and later retired from Joseph Horne Co. in Greensburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jonathan P. Kemerer, in 1992; a brother, Robert Kifer; and two sisters, Betty Loughner and Peg Watkins. Surviving are a son, Robert A. Kemerer and his wife, Roseann, a sister, Ruth Salvatore and her husband, Carmen, and three grandchildren, Robert J. Kemerer, Scott J. Kemerer and Annette M. Kemerer, all of Jeannette, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Daniel R. Defassio officiating. Entombment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
Elenore G. "Ellie" Kent, 66, of Greensburg, ended a courageous fight with cancer and went with the Lord Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000. Elenore was born April 1, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late George and Mary Ponko Evon. She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Kent, on Aug. 2, 1974. She was the beloved mother of Christopher J. Kent and his wife, Colleen Kent, and grandmother to Jonathan W. Kent and Joshua G. Kent, all of Unity Township. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Gerry Miller of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Terry Evon of Pittsburgh; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was self-employed for many years as a ceramic teacher, as a realtor for Coldwell Banker, and as a sales representative at Service Merchandise. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Greensburg, the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the Gold Star Wives of America Inc., and the Board of Realtors. She will be dearly missed by her son and his wife, grandsons, family, and friends. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in Christ Episcopal Church, Greensburg, Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence Knotts officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Hempfield Township. Family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations to Christ Episcopal Church, 122 N. Charles F. Mann Sr., 78, of North Huntingdon, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in Huntingdon Ridge, North Huntingdon. He was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Philadelphia, the son of the late Charles F. and Catherine Mercer Mann. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Gulf Oil Company. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. Mann; and a sister, Catherine Thompson. He is survived by two sons, Charles F. Jr. and his wife, Michele, of Cornelius, N.C., and Thomas J. and his wife, Kitty, of Oakland Park, Fla.; a daughter, Marjorie Giallonardo and her husband, Rocco, of Greensburg; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Friends will be received at the SHIRLEY-KUKICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Clay Pike, Circleville, North Huntingdon, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Monday (at a time to be announced) in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John Pressler officiating. Interment will follow in Irwin Union Cemetery.
Adeline L. Merlin, 84, of Latrobe, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in the Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Oct. 8, 1915, in Fredericktown, Pa., a daughter of the late Demitrio and Judith Panissi. She was a member of St. Vincent Basilica in Latrobe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Merlin; four sisters; and a brother. Survived by two sons, Timothy J. Merlin and his wife, Julie, of Greensburg and John P. Merlin and his wife, Rhonda, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Misty Dawn Merlin and Gessica Merlin. There will be no public visitations. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass to be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica in Latrobe. Interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery, Unity Township. The JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe, is in charge of arrangements.
Richard W. Miller Jr., 30, of Adamsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born Sept. 8, 1969, in McKeesport, a son of Nancy Buzzie Miller of Irwin and Richard W. Miller of McKeesport. He was an employee of TR Trucking, Jeannette. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Richard J. Miller; a sister, Michelle Leighty, and a brother, Christopher Miller, both of Irwin; and his maternal grandmother, Mary Buzzie of North Versailles. Friends will be received at the WILLIAM SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 521 Main St., Irwin, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at which time funeral services will be held. Place of interment
will be announced.
Hugo "Midge" Vivio, 88, of Monessen, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at 8 a.m. in his home, following a lengthy illness. He was born Nov. 8, 1911, in Monessen, a son of the late Enrico and Maria (Mastracci) Vivio. Mr. Vivio was a member of the Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church in Monessen and the AARP. He retired in 1967 from the Monessen Plant of Pittsburgh Steel, having worked for 31 years as a foreman in the Rod Mill. He then worked as director of the Domestic Relations Department in Westmoreland County, having retired in 1985. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Irma (Kollar) Vivio; a daughter, Kathy Vivio of Monessen; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Anita (Grano) Vivio of Youngwood; a brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Helen Vivio of Monessen; two sisters, Enes Migun and Ada Swallow, both of Monessen; two grandchildren, Salvatore and Anthony Vivio; and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph "Brownie" Vivio and John "Heinz" Vivio; and a sister, Arminda Mosier. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 441 Reed Ave., Monessen. A blessing service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass in the Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen.
William John Bielawski, 62, of Carroll Township, formerly of Monessen and Gransville, entered into eternity Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at his home. Born Dec. 31, 1937, the son of the late Stanislaus V. and Anna V. Hokaj Bielawski. He was a graduate of the California Area High School with the class of 1955, attended the University of Pittsburgh and Waynesburg College, and was a graduate of California State University. While serving in the U.S. Army as a cryptologist he held the highest security clearance. He was employed at the Monessen Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Coke Plant and held office in the AFL-CIO Coke Plant union. He began his teaching career in the Donora school district and until retiring. He also taught math and history in the Monessen school district, and also served as athletic director, golf coach, track coach and Midget League football coach. He was elected and served as controller for the city of Monessen for 11 ½ years, until health reasons forced his retirement. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Controllers Association and the Pennsylvania League of Cities Association. He served as president, vice president and chief negotiator for the Monessen Education Association. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and its southwestern district legislative committees. As a member of the National Education Association he also served as national convention delegate. He also held membership in the Pennsylvania Math Teachers Association. He was a member of numerous social and fraternal organizations throughout the valley. He was a member of the former Most Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, serving as lector. He is survived by his wife, Ruth J. (Fayak) Bielawski; two sons, William III and his fiancee, Denise Hasch, of Monessen, and Jeffrey P. Bielawski of Florida; and a sister, Victoria and her husband, the Rev. Herb Richardson, of Fayette City. Survivors also include Mrs. Gabriel (Dolores Fayak) Gembarosky, Mrs. Carl (Josephine Pasqua) Fayak, and Major and Mrs. Edward Fayak, USAF (Ret.), of Altus, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC., 1209 Grand Blvd., Monessen. Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the Epiphany of Our Lord Church, Monessen. Interment will follow in Holy Name Cemetery, Monessen.
Kenneth G. "Moose" Herbert, 63, of Greensburg, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born May 11, 1936, in Greensburg, a son of the late George and Louise Ruffin Herbert. He was an employee of the Elliott Co. of Jeannette and a former employee of Kennametal in Delmont. He was commander of the American Legion Post 318 and a member of AMVETS Post 88, both of Greensburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Phillips; and three brothers, Grandville, Harry, and an infant. He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Hoffman Herbert, of Greensburg; children, Desa Boyd and husband, David, of Florida, Dana Detar and husband, Tim, of Greensburg, Paul DuCotey and wife, Jennifer, and Kimmie Diebold, all of North Carolina, and Vernon Johnson of Arizona; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Richard Herbert of Crabtree; a sister, Gladys Page of Buffalo, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends will be received at the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME, 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, (724) 837-0020, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Williamson officiating. Ruth Caroline Lash Judith, 81, of Greensburg, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in the Edgewood Nursing Center, Youngstown, Pa. Ruth was born April 9, 1918, in Reading, a daughter of the late Raymond Christopher and Mary Elizabeth Haueisen Lash. Ruth graduated from Kutztown State Teachers College and taught in Reading, Pa., and Milford, Conn., before moving to Greensburg in 1959. She retired from the Penn-Trafford School District, where she taught English and reading at the McCullough Junior High/Middle School. She was a former parishioner of the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral of Greensburg. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Walter Paul Judith, in October of 1993; and a sister, Margaret Lash Himmelreich, in January of 2000. She is survived by a son, Paul R. Judith of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Suzanne J. Fisher and her husband, Richard, and Caroline J. Adams, all of Greensburg; three grandsons, Paul S. Adams of Amherst, Mass., Todd A. Fisher of Sun Valley, Nev., and Matthew E. Fisher of Hunker; a great-grandson, Dylan J. Fisher of Hunker; a former daughter-in-law, Charlene Falk Judith of Youngstown, Pa.; two sisters, Marie Lash Disend of Baldwin, N.Y., and Dorothy A. Lash of Reading, Pa.; and a niece, Louise M. Bays, and her children, Ryan and Colleen, of Baldwin, N.Y. Friends will be received at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 8:30 p.m., at which time a vigil wake service will be held. Interment will take place Monday in the Gethsemane Cemetery in Laureldale, Pa.
