Anna Stehney Vesely, 89, of North Huntingdon, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in the Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 31, 1910, in Rillton, a daughter of the late Frank and Anna Haverlack Stehney. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Irwin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Laber; and two brothers, John and George Stehney. Surviving are her husband, Louis Vesely; a son, James and his wife, Rebecca Vesely, of Greensburg; a daughter, Mary Ann Vesely of North Huntingdon; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jonathan and Ryan Vesely; a sister, Helen Adamese of Pittsburgh; and four brothers, Frank of Elizabeth, Charles of Clairton, Paul of Jeannette and Michael of Port Vue. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH F. OTT FUNERAL HOME INC., Fifth and Oak streets, Irwin, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church. Entombment will follow in the Penn-Lincoln Memorial Park, North Huntingdon.
John J. Cavanaugh Sr., 81, of Latrobe, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at IHS at Mt. View, Unity Township. He was born March 10, 1918, in West Newton, a son of the late John J. Sr. and Catherine McCarter Cavanaugh. He was a graduate of St. Vincent College, and a member of Holy Family Church, Latrobe, and its Ushers Club. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy as a first lieutenant pilot in Patrol Bombing Squadron 25, where he saw action in the Philippines. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals and two Gold Stars. He was a member of the VFW, Latrobe. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Cavanaugh. Survivors include his wife, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage, Mary M. McFadden Cavanaugh; two sons, John J. Cavanaugh Jr. and his wife, Suzi, of Latrobe and Dr. Michael F. Cavanaugh and his wife, Beth Anne, of Ambler; three daughters, Mary M. Jenison and her husband, Robert, of Wellsville, Kathryn A. Smith and her husband, Kenneth, of East Fallowfield and Anita L. Cavanaugh of Latrobe; four brothers, Emerson Cavanaugh and his wife, Myrna, of Latrobe, Daniel Cavanaugh of Herminie, Francis Cavanaugh of West Newton and Phillip Cavanaugh and his wife, Ruth, of South Carolina; and two sisters, Catherine Murphy of Monroeville and Winifred Kuhn of Morgantown, W.Va. Also survived by 16 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Unity Township. Military services will be held Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. in the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions to Holy Family Church.
Thelma D. Trout Hainsey, 83, of North Huntingdon, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Swissvale, a daughter of the late William P. and Sarah Conner Trout. Prior to retirement she worked in the Corporate Trust Department of Pittsburgh National Bank with 27 years of service. She was a member of the Brush Creek Salem United Church of Christ of Irwin and its Ladies Craft Club, the Pythian Sisters in Irwin, and the Rebecca Lodge of Swissvale. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lewis Hainsey Sr., in March, 1994; two sons, William P. Hainsey and Robert Lewis Hainsey Jr.; and a sister, Mary McGregor. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou and her husband, Jack Schake, of North Huntingdon; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Whitehurst of North Huntingdon, Willa Aurouze of Waldorf, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH F. OTT FUNERAL HOME INC., Fifth and Oak streets, Irwin, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Brush Creek Salem United Church of Christ with the Rev. F.E. Jenkins, her pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Monongahela Cemetery, Braddock.
Steven Harash, 86, of Smithton, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, in Westmoreland Manor, Hempfield Township. He was born Aug. 14, 1913, in La Belle, Pa., a son of the late George and Veronica Regec Harash. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a welder at Osborn Manufacturing Co., Cleveland, Ohio. Upon retirement, he returned to Smithton to reside with his brother, Joseph, and his wife, Margaret, and family. In addition to his brother, Joseph, he is survived by a sister, Helen Komar and husband, John, of Belle Vernon; and a brother, Andrew and his wife, Coreen, of Florida. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Michael and George, all of Van Meter. Friends and family will be received at the L.L. BARTHELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Second Street, Smithton, Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at which time a blessing service will be held in the funeral home with Father Paul Stivason, of St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will be in St. Timothy's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Smithton.
Bernard L. Noel Sr., 81, of Latrobe RD9, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in I.H.S. of Mountain View, Unity Township. He was born Aug. 12, 1918, a son of the late and Charles and Alice Ransel Noel. He was a retired employee of Hempfield Foundries. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Vincent Basilica, and past president of the Old Crabtree Sportsmen's Club; a member of the Cooperstown Vets, Frontier Club of Latrobe, Latrobe American Legion and the Pleasant Unity VFW. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Hayes Noel; and a brother, Charles Noel. Surviving are his son, Bernard L. Noel Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Latrobe RD9; four grandchildren, Bernard L. III and wife, Natalie Noel, William and wife, Brooke Noel, Robert and wife, Heidi Noel, and Tracey Zundel and husband, David; four great-grandchildren, Shelby, Samantha, Andrew and Brandon; a brother, Eugene Noel of Jeannette; and a sister, Marie Gessler of Latrobe. Friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent Basilica, with interment
to follow in the St. Clair Cemetery. The family has requested memorial contributions to one's favorite charity.
Harry A. Teese, 75, of Ligonier RD4, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, in the Bethlen Home, Ligonier. He was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Harry A. and Nothbergar Scheible Teese. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ligonier. Prior to retirement, he was a truck driver for Standard Motor Freight in Pittsburgh. Harry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Finley Teese, on Jan. 30, 2000; a brother, George Teese; and two sisters, Rose Marie Teese and Wilma Proden; and a grandson. He is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Stouffer and her husband Ron, and Pat Knupp and her husband Ron, all of Rector; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at the SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC. & CREMATORY, Bell and East Church streets, Ligonier, Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Blessing services will be held 9 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Charlotte B. Bailey, a longtime resident of Greensburg, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg, after a brief illness. She was the wife of Dr. Louis J.C. Bailey, who preceded her in death in 1975. She is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Bailey and Cynthia Bailey Miller, both of Massachusetts; two grandchildren, David J. Miller and Cheryl Miller Favale, also of Massachusetts; seven great-grandchildren; and her dear nieces, Sally Sweeney of Pittsburgh and Charlotte Smith of Massachusetts and their families. In the early part of her life, Charlotte graduated from Duquesne University, where she obtained her degree in nursing. She worked as a registered nurse in Philadelphia and did flood relief work for the American Red Cross in Ohio. Charlotte was a longtime member and past president of the D.A.R., Medical Auxiliary, the Friday Club, College Club and the Greensburg Garden Club. She was also a longtime member and enthusiastic supporter of the Westmoreland Museum of Fine Arts. In 1995, she was the recipient of the Distinguished Arts and Community Leadership Award from the Greensburg Area Cultural Council. Charlotte had a lifelong love of gardening and was an expert on "old" roses; she was also a landscape design judge. Fishing, both at home and at her summer home on French River, Canada, traveling the world, and reading were among her interests. Well into her 70s and 80s she took up many arts and crafts, including stained glass window, pottery, and watercolor painting. Charlotte had a passion for life and believed in living it to the fullest. She will be greatly missed by her large extended family and her many friends. A Memorial Mass in celebration of her life will be celebrated at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg, Friday at 10 a.m. Charlotte would prefer that donations in her memory be made to the Westmoreland Museum of Fine Arts, or the Greensburg Library, in lieu of flowers. Anna Frenchik Barron, 94, of Derry, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in the St. Anne Home, Greensburg. She was born Oct. 13, 1905, in Superior, Derry Township, a daughter of the late John and Helen Meholic Frenchik. A homemaker, Anna was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Snydertown, and was a member of the St. Joseph 50 Plus Club of Derry, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Derry Ukrainian Society with which she had bowled for 35 years, the St. Vincent Senior Citizens and the U.N.A. Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Barron, on Sept. 21, 1987; and several brothers and sisters. Anna is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Irene) Neil of Monroeville, Mrs. Pat Geary, Mrs. Jack (Carol) Krinock and Mrs. Wayne (Yvonne) Wissinger, all of Derry; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Frenchik of Hostetter; three sisters, Mrs. Edward (Agnes) Pisz of Melvindale, Mich., Mrs. Ethel Walters and Mrs. Hazel Frenchik, both of Bradenville; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Tuesday from noon to 9 p.m. in the MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME INC., 548 N. Chestnut St., Derry. Parastas service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Panachida service will be held Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by Divine Liturgy at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Derry.
Father Julian Francis Burt, O.S.B., a monk of St. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, after a long illness. He was 91. Father Julian was born Nov. 4, 1908, in New York City, the son of the late Julian and Mary (Markey) Burt. He attended St. Peter's High School in Staten Island, and later studied at Fordham University, St. Francis College in Pennsylvania, and St. John's University in New York, and received a master of arts degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America. Father Julian entered the religious life in 1939, when he professed vows with the Fathers of Mercy. He first served in parish apostolates and on the faculties of several seminaries. In 1956, he entered the Benedictine monastic community at Belmont Abbey in North Carolina, where he served as a faculty member at Belmont Abbey College. Later he taught at Mercyhurst College in Erie and at the Benedictine Military School in Savannah, Ga. Father Julian entered the St. Vincent monastic community in 1968, and for several years he served in pastoral apostolates in the Dioceses of Greensburg, Altoona-Johnstown, and Erie. In 1981, he was appointed pastor of Holy Cross Church in Spangler. He retired to the Archabbey in 1984, but continued to serve in weekend parish assignments until 1990. He also worked in the Archabbey post office and helped with the upkeep of the St. Vincent grove. Father Julian published a number of articles in The Priest, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, and Pastoral Life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Wragg. He is survived by a nephew, William Wragg, of Branford, Conn.; and a cousin, Rita Carlson of Sparta, N.J. Viewing will be held in Leander Hall parlor, St. Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Tuesday, Feb. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. A vigil service will be held in St. Vincent Archabbey Basilica at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Father Julian's body will lie in state in the Basilica until 9 p.m., and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16. Memorial contributions may be made to the Benedictine Health and Welfare Fund at St. Vincent Archabbey.
Susan J. Knupp, 92, of Stahlstown RD1 (Kregar), died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at her residence. She was born Jan. 23, 1908, in Donegal Township, a daughter of the late David and Florence Myers Shawley. She attended the Kregar Community Church and was a member of the Laurel Mountain Senior Citizens, Donegal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Knupp; a son, Robert C. Knupp; a daughter, Betty Jane Leonard; two brothers, John and David Shawley; and a sister, Ivy Overly. She is survived by a granddaughter, Mary Jane Leonard of Stahlstown RD1; a grandson, Robert C. Leonard and his wife, Karin, of Versailles Borough; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Leonard. Family will receive friends at the L. BOYD SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC., Church Street, Donegal, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev.
