Dr. Herbert J. Morrow, of New Alexandria, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Nov. 11, 1920, in Brenizer, Pa., a son of the late Michael and Catherine Morrow. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie; brother, Howard; infant grandchild, Rachel Anne Denara; a son-in-law, Frank Denara; a great-step-granddaughter, Heather. He received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, graduating magna cum laude in 1947. He received the James Heard Award for scholarship and internal medicine, and the Bernard Goldman Award for the highest scholastic standing in dermatology. While at Pitt, he was the president of the AOA National Medical Honor Society. He interned at Homestead and South Side Hospitals in Pittsburgh. He did postgraduate work in arthritis and diabetes at Brooke General Hospital, San Antonio, Texas, and cardiology at the University of Buffalo Medical School. He served in the combat medical department in Bataan in the Philippines in World War II. He set up practice in New Alexandria in 1952, and had an expanded practice in Crabtree. He was past president of the Latrobe Area Hospital Medical Staff and a member of the board of directors. He was a school physician for the Derry Area School District and health officer for New Alexandria. He took a physical retirement in 1984. His professional affiliations include: Latrobe Academy of Medicine, Westmoreland County of Pennsylvania State Medical Societies and the American Medical Association. His social affiliations included: New Alexandria Firemen's Club, American Legion, Lions Club, and the Blairsville and the Latrobe Elks. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, New Alexandria. Surviving are his wife, June Weaver Morrow of New Alexandria; three children, Mrs. Frank (Kathryn) Denara of Brenizer, Mrs. Joseph (Michele) Bell of Blairsville and Herbert and wife, Susan, of New Alexandria; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four great-step-grandchildren. Friends will be received Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the P. DAVID NEWHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Church and Washington streets in New Alexandria. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. James Catholic Church in New Alexandria with the Rev. Father Lawrence T. Persico as celebrant. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, New Alexandria. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department.
Raymond Bergman, 77, of West Newton, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999. He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Collinsburg, a son of the late William and Minnie George Bergman. He was a retired employee of U.S. Steel Corp., and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion in Mt. Pleasant, and the Collinsburg Liederkranz. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, West Newton. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen (Rock) Bergman; two children, Ron Bergman Jr. of West Newton and Gay Ramsey of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandchildren, Robin Bergman, Ron Bergman Jr., and Brandon Bergman; two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Morgan Bergman; and the following sisters and brothers, Martha Kelley of Charleroi, Ruth DiNardo and Andrew Bergman, both of West Newton, and Alma Chuck and Edward Bergman of West Point, Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Sikorsky; and two brothers, William and Wilbert Bergman. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton. Funeral services Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Allen R. Riethmiller officiating. Interment West Newton Cemetery.
Robert J. Daw, 60, of Derry, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at home. He was born Jan. 22, 1939, in Derry Township, a son of the late John Paul and Alice M. Cox Daw. He was a retired employee of Latrobe Steel, where he had been a maintenance foreman; a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latrobe; and had been a member of the National Guard and the Derry Ukrainian Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard P. Daw. Bob is survived by two sons, Matthew J. Daw (and his wife, Nicole) of Berwyn, Pa., and David A. Daw; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Peterman of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Beverly Heiple and her husband, Donald, of Derry RD. Family will receive friends in the MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME INC., 548 N. Chestnut St., Derry, Tuesday from noon until 2 p.m., when a funeral service will be conducted with a pastor from Latrobe Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township.
Geoffrey Paul Dohner, 31, died recently in Vandergrift. Born Jan. 7, 1968, in Baltimore, Md., he was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in McKeesport, and a member of the Mazda RX7 Club. He was a printed circuit board designer for Tolgrade. He is survived by his parents, John Dohner of Columbia, Md., and Ann Kebles Dohner of McKeesport; a brother, Jonathan Dohner of Uniontown; an aunt, Eleanor Bangs of Maryland; and a niece and a nephew. No visitation. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Christian Missionary Alliance Church with Pastor Kenneth Toczyski officiating. Hugh A. McHenry, 86, of Derry, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, in the home of his loving daughter, Judy Collins, in Latrobe, where she and her daughter, Stacey, had been caring for him. He was born April 21, 1913, in Derry, the town he had spent his entire life in and loved, a son of the late Claude and Fannie Almes McHenry. He worked at Derry Westinghouse Inc. for 39 years, retiring in 1975. He was always ready to help out a friend. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Leona McHenry, in 1979; and a sister, Joan McHenry Kells. He was a good and loving father to his children, Judy Collins of Latrobe, Jack and Barbara McHenry of Massillon, Ohio, Karen and Patsy Hatzimbes of Pittsburgh, and Terry and Patti McHenry of Latrobe. Also survived by eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Helen Ickes of Derry, and her two children, Jackie Plummer and Dick Ickes. Hugh believed in living and celebrating life. Harry O. "Roundy" Darragh, 72, of Harrison City, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in AUH-Forbes Regional, Monroeville. He was born March 23, 1927, in the Fort Pitt section of Jeannette, a son of the late Wilson and Minnie Biggerstaff Darragh. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a braker at A.S.G. Industries of Jeannette. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict, and a member of the VFW and American Legion Post #344, both of Jeannette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence Rucolas, Dorothy Rucolas, and Ethel Ludman; and five brothers, Raymond W., Wilson J., Donald, Michael, and Robert Darragh. Survived by his wife, Betty Kessel Darragh; a daughter, Mrs. Vickie King and her husband, George, of Jeannette; two sons, Robert Darragh and his wife, Eleanor, and Terry Darragh and his wife, Kimberly, all of Jeannette. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Tammy Sue King, Michelle Lynn Darragh, George J. King, Ashley Nicole Darragh, and Terry Allen Darragh; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jonathan Hardt officiating. Interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
John J. Olbrish, 80, of Delmont (formerly of Penn Craft), died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Gratztown (South Huntingdon Township), a son of the late Walter and Sophie Olbrys Olbrish. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a coal miner. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Church in Republic, and attended St. John Baptist de La Salle Church in Delmont. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Uniontown, the S.N.P.J. Lodge #744 in Republic, the United Mine Workers of America, and the Fayette County Firemen's Association. During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army in the European theater of operations. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Verna M. Baum Olbrish, in 1989; two sisters and three brothers, Stella Daniecki, Helen Dabin, and Steve, Frank, and Alexander Olbrish. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Miller; two daughters, Patricia Boyd and her husband, Rick, of Allison and Nancy Smodic of Belle Vernon; two brothers, Walter Olbrish and Joseph Olbrish, both of West Newton; two stepsons, Todd Miller and his wife, Chris, of Jeannette and Bruce Miller and his wife, Michelle, of Mt. Pleasant; five grandsons and a granddaughter, Jason Koterba and his wife, Raelynn, Frank E. Koterba, Adam and John Smodic, and Daniel and Katlyn Miller; and three great-grandchildren. There will no public visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in the Holy Rosary Church in Republic Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Purnell as celebrant. A graveside service and interment
will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill. Should friends desire, memorial remembrances may be made in Mr. Olbrish's name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 90 N. Mt. Marie Elizabeth Potochnik, 103, of West Newton, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at TLC Adult Care Center in West Newton. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Oct. 24, 1896, a daughter of the late Mary and Bernard Potochnik. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Michael; and two sisters, Francis Pegel and Ella Davidson. She was a retired registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in West Newton and the Christian Mothers. She is survived by a brother, Bernard Potochnik of Detroit, Mich.; and a sister, Rosiland Leech of California. Friends will be received Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the RICHARD F. DODSON FUNERAL HOME, 213 Main Street, West Newton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Dec. 9, at 9:30 a.m. in the Holy Family R.C. Church, West Newton, with the Rev. John Regoli as celebrant. Interment will follow in the West Newton Cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Francis Hospital Nursing Alumni Foundation, St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Arthur A. Rosnick, 82, of West Newton, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, in Southwest Nursing Center, Jefferson Borough. He was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Lamberton, a son of the late Samuel and Mary Lux Rosnick. He was a retired employee of U.S. Steel Corp., Clairton Works. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was Lutheran by faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Samuel, John, Andrew, Charles, Jacob and Harry; and two sisters, Mary Rak and Anna Mae Heinze. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Norma (Mihalsky) Rosnick; four daughters, Rosalind Schrantz Warner and husband, George, of Kissimmee, Fla., Jean Nawalanic of Highland Heights, Ohio, Alice Kurzdorfer and husband, Paul, of Greenock, and Lynn Kisner and husband, James, of West Newton; five grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Mankins of Virginia. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton, where services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Allen R. Riethmiller officiating. Interment with full military honors in West Newton Cemetery.
Karen Ann Tornowske, 47, of West Newton, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999. She was born March 24, 1952, in Prairie Du Chien, Wis., a daughter of Vivian Jacobs Klinkhammer of Wisconsin and the late Mark Klinkhammer. She worked as a school psychologist for the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit. She was a social member of the VFW Post #7812 in West Newton and the Slovenian Club in Collinsburg. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Anton "Tony" Tornowske; two children, Hope and Matthew Tornowske, both at home; a sister, Kay Appelt of Wisconsin; and a brother, Wayne Klinkhammer of Alabama. Friends will be received Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton. Time and place of services to be announced.
