Acme
William H. May, 78, of Acme, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh. He was born Jan. 1, 1923, in Donegal Township, a son of the late William H. and Theresa Shaffer May. Bill was a retired carpenter and had been a member of the Carpenters and Joiners Local 230. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 7250, Confluence. He was an avid hunter and a member of the Laurel Highlands Coonhunter Club, where he held several offices, the Mountain Cry Coon and Fox Hunters Association, the Little Sewickley Sportsmen's Association and the Turkeyfoot Fish and Game Association. He was also a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Donegal. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Audrey J. Corwin May, in 1988; four brothers, Pershing, Charles, Fred and Edward May; and a sister, Helen Snyder. He is survived by five children, Janet Ritenour and her husband, Robert, of Melcroft, Dale May and his wife, Connie, of Acme, Darlene Blackburn and her husband, John, of White, Ray May and his wife, Jill, of Donegal and Kathy Stough and her husband, Jeffrey, of Indian Head; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Zelenske of Latrobe and Elsie Bell of Somerset. Friends will be received Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the CLYDE BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 711, Melcroft, where service will be held Tuesday at a time to be announced. Interment will be in Donegal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. May to the Laurel Highlands Coonhunters Club, c/o William Ritenour, 1712 Indian Creek Valley Road, Melcroft, PA 15462.
Latrobe
Joseph C. McCullough, 85, of Latrobe, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, John J. and Susan Stasio, in Ligonier Township. He was born June 27, 1916, in Latrobe, a son of the late James Alexander and Anna Rena Mae (Vachal) McCullough. Prior to his retirement, Joe was employed by the Latrobe Steel Company, having over 40 years of service, and also owned and operated the former McCullough Sports Center in downtown Latrobe for many years. He was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the B.P.O.E. #907, the I.O.O.F. #541, the L.O.O.M. #95, the Latrobe Steel Retirees Golf League and the Touchdown Club, all in Latrobe. He was also a graduate of the Derry Township High School Class of 1934. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jane Amundson; his first wife, Louise (Bittner) McCullough; his second wife, Mary Rita (McAteer) Stasio McCullough; his third wife, Mary Helen (Galemberti) Bates McCullough; his fourth wife, Thelma (Gibson) Harr McCullough; and his brother, James David McCullough. He is survived by three children, Joseph T. McCullough and his wife, Cheryl, of Ligonier, Mary Theresa Frenchik and her husband, Michael, of Calabasas, Calif., and John J. Stasio and his wife, Susan, of Ligonier Township; six grandchildren, Matthew and Kyle McCullough, Susan Pierce, David Amundson, Michelle Frenchik and Ashley Stasio; two great-grandsons, Brian Pierce and Kevin Amundson; his sister-in-law, Mary Ellen McCullough of Latrobe; a number of nieces and nephews, including his nephew, Alan McCullough, and his niece, Sharon Nies; and his faithful dog, Coby. Friends will be received at the HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe, from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Latrobe, with the church pastors officiating. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township.
East McKeesport
Emily Svetoka Smith Musinsky, 84, of East McKeesport, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in Manorcare Health Services, Monroeville. She was born May 22, 1917, in Wilmerding, a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary Chilinskas Svetoka. She was a retired employee of J.C. Penney Co., Eastland Mall, and a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Church, East McKeesport. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Stephen Smith; her second husband, Stephen J. Musinsky; and a daughter, Emily Mae Hrabak. She is survived by a son, Stephen Smith and his wife, Marlene, of North Huntingdon; a stepson, Gerald Musinsky; a stepdaughter, Anna Marie Blawas; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, B. Paul Svetoka of El Paso, Texas; a sister, Helen Michaels of Inverness, Fla.; also nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the FORGIE-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Broadway, East McKeesport, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Church. Interment will follow in New St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles.
Arnold
Alice G. Novosielski, 79, of Arnold, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in the Vincentian DeMarillac Nursing Home, Pittsburgh. She was born in Carnegie, July 18, 1922, and had been a lifetime resident of the Arnold area. She was employed by the Internal Revenue Service, retiring as a clerical supervisor with 42 years of service. She was a member of St. Mary of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church, New Kensington, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She is survived by a sister, Helen Modzelewski of Princeton, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, John and Mary Kisska Gorczyca, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard S. "Charlie" Novosielski; and four sisters, Jane Begeny, Leone Wagner, Loretta Proch and Rose Filipowski. Friends will be received Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the RUSIEWICZ FUNERAL HOME INC., 1400 Fifth Ave., Arnold, where prayers of transfer will be said Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Christian Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary R.C. Church, New Kensington, with the Rev. Richard P. Karenbauer as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Lower Burrell.
Youngwood
Mary E. Novotny, 59, devoted mother, of Youngwood, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Nov. 30, 1941, in Calumet, a daughter of the late William G. Jr. and Esther (Mertz) Fultz. She had formerly been employed as a librarian for both the Gettysburg and Latrobe school districts. She was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church, South Greensburg, a graduate of Hurst High School and Clarion State University. A talented crafter, Mary had participated in many local craft shows. She was also an avid reader with a great love for books. She is survived by her husband, Stephen E. Novotny; two sons, Stephen E. Novotny III of Youngwood and Michael W. Novotny of Greensburg; two daughters, Kerry Silvis of Youngwood and Ellen N. and her husband, Christopher Root, of Annapolis, Md.; a granddaughter, Krista Mary Silvis; and a brother, William Fultz III and his wife, Katherine, of Mammoth. There will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Bruno Catholic Church, South Greensburg, with the Rev. Blane L. Resko, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Trauger. The family asks that memorial donations be made to the Greensburg-Hempfield Library, 237 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Greensburg, PA 15601. The BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Greensburg, in charge of arrangements.
Youngwood
Warren F. Rafferty, 85, of Youngwood, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Pittsburgh. He was born Jan. 16, 1916, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late George W. and Sarah T. Wiedeman Rafferty. He was retired from the former Robertshaw Controls of New Stanton. He was a member of the Armbrust Wesleyan Church, Robertshaw Retirees Club, the Triple Teens and the senior citizens of the church and the church orchestra. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen E. Capar; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Doris Virginia Rafferty. Surviving are his wife, Millie E. Johnson Rafferty; two sons, Ronald W. Rafferty and his wife, Pauline, of Mercer and Thomas L. Rafferty and his wife, Nancy, of Greensburg; a daughter, Kathleen Pettit and her husband, Austin, of Panama City Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Stella Whitehead of Newport News, Va., Sarah Ullrich of Youngwood and Ardith McGinnis of Greensburg. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the C. RICHARD McCAULEY FUNERAL HOME INC., Youngwood, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Glenn Rader officiating. Interment to follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park.
Irwin
Louis J. Schultheis, 86, of Irwin, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in his home. He was born Feb. 6, 1915, in Irwin, the son of the late William F. and Mary Klinkhamer Schultheis. He was a member of the Norwin Church of the Nazarene. Prior to retirement, he was employed by U.S. Steel. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Gebert Schultheis; a son, Richard C. and his wife, Wiesia, of Leesburg, Fla.; a daughter, Judy Moss and her husband, David, of Irwin; seven grandchildren, Michael, Richard, Eric, Adam, Karl and Mark Schultheis and Kristin Valentine; and six great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the SHIRLEY-KUKICH FUNERAL HOME INC., Clay Pike, Circleville, North Huntingdon, where service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Troxler officiating. Interment will follow in Long Run Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westmoreland Hospice or the Norwin Church of the Nazarene.
Champion
Norman A. Singer, 56, of Champion, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in his home. He was born Feb. 19, 1945, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Albert L. and Sylvia M. Mottle Singer. He was a 1963 graduate of North Catholic High School. He was the owner and operator of Singer Construction Co. and Gold Hill Log Homes of Champion. He was also a co-owner of The Tree House in Jones Mills and the former owner and operator of the Singer Pattern Co. in Pittsburgh and Champion. He was a member of St. Raymond of the Mountains Roman Catholic Church, Donegal, and a former member of the Indian Creek Valley Lions Club. He was also active as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Cunningham Singer; three sons, Michael Singer and his wife, Sherry, of Kecksburg, Brian Singer and his wife, Traci, and Norman Singer, all of Champion; six grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Youngblut and her husband, Carl, of Redmond, Wash.; 12 nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and -nephews. Friends will be received at the CLYDE BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 711, Melcroft, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Raymond of the Mountains R.C. Church, Donegal, with the Rev. John Harrold as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Raymond's Cemetery, Saltlick Township.
Jeannette
June E. Smith, 86, of Jeannette, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Westmoreland Manor, Hempfield Township. She was born June 26, 1915, in Jeannette, a daughter of the late Samuel and Jessie Bitz Smith. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the former Kmart store of Greensburg. June was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Ethel Smith Baker; and a brother, Clyde Smith. She is survived by a sister, Naomi Smeal of Jeannette; five nieces, Jeannine Arthur and husband, James, of Florida, Marlene Tinkey and husband, Edward, of Greensburg, June Thompson of Washington, Gloria Wellhoffer of Delmont and Joann Gibson and husband, Richard, of Greensburg; two nephews, Edward Smith of Philadelphia and Clyde Smith Jr. of Virginia; several great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews. Friends will be received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, beginning Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Daniel R. Defassio officiating. Interment will follow in the Jeannette Memorial Park, Penn Township.
Irwin
Albert B. "Bud" Travis, 75, of Irwin, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in the Veterans Hospital, Oakland. He was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Wilkinsburg, a son of the late Albert H. and Sarah Catherine Brown Travis. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Irwin, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a second lieutenant with the U.S. Army Reserve. He had also served as a chaplain's assistant at the Army Reserve Center, East Liberty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth McDowell. He is survived by a brother, Robert K. Travis and his wife, Sandra, of Penn Hills; a niece; four nephews; and four great-nephews. Friends will be received at the WILLIAM SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 521 Main St., Irwin, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Lanny Mellinger and Dr. R. Bruce Maxwell co-officiating. Place of interment
will be announced.
