Latrobe
Charles W. "Munk" Overly, 79, of Latrobe, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital. Born June 29, 1922, in Mt. Pleasant, he was a son of the late Charles D. and Emily (Becker) Overly. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of both the Latrobe and Pleasant Unity VFW. Prior to his retirement, he was a mechanic for the former Grabiak Chevrolet, Mt. Pleasant. Surviving are his sister, Ann King and husband, Jim, of Scottdale; and several nieces and nephews, including Linda Hayes of Dunbar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Overly; his twin sister, Genevieve Overly; his sister, Patricia S. Overly Shrum; and infant twin siblings. There will be no public visitation. Private interment
will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. EUGENE G. SALOOM FUNERAL HOME INC., 730 W. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, in charge of arrangements.
Parks Township
James I. Parks, 81, of Parks Township, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights. Born Oct. 29, 1920, in Parks Township, he was a son of the late James B. and Alice Culp Parks. A lifelong resident of the Kiski Valley, he was a graduate of Apollo High School. Mr. Parks was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Prior to retirement, he was employed as an operator at the Vandergrift plant of U.S. Steel in the continuous annealing department. Mr. Parks was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and a past member of its council; the Masonic Lodge and American Legion, all in Vandergrift; the Coudersport Scottish Rite, Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh, the VAL Caravan, a life member of the Parks Township Sportsmen's Club and the 19th Bombardment Association. He also enjoyed camping with the Penn West #23 campers. Mr. Parks had been a Parks Township supervisor for 18 years, most as its chairman. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty (Hastie) Parks; a son, J. Donald Parks of Mamont; a daughter, Patty Shields of Lower Burrell; and four grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Parks; and two sisters, Jean Clepper and Frances Waldford. Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the DUNMIRE-KERR FUNERAL HOME, A Golden Rule Member, 244 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift. Service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church, Vandergrift, with the Rev. Keith Deckinger officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Apollo. A Masonic service will be held Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vandergrift.
Scottdale
Paul H. Pitzer, 79, of Arthur Avenue, Scottdale, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Jan. 4, 1922, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., a son of the late Harlan Samuel and Ruth Starr Pitzer. Paul was a 24-year member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Scottdale, where he served as an usher, chairman of the pastor parish relations committee and a member of the church council. He was the owner and operator of Top Oil Co. of Norvelt for the past 24 years. Previously he had been employed by Pitney-Bowes Corp. as a branch manger and major account executor at various locations with 24 years of service. Paul was a founding member of the VFW Post in Shepherdstown after World War II. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in Baltimore, Md., Bainbridge, Md., Little Creek, Va., New York, AATB Arzew, Algeria, and served on the USS LST 357 and was a beachmaster for amphibious operations in Anzio and Normandy. He attained the rank of signalman second class (T) USNR. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Normandy. Paul was a member of Burlington County District Council for the Boy Scouts of America in New Jersey. Paul leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Mary O'Dell Pitzer, whom he married July 18, 1947; his two sons, Paul D. Pitzer and his wife, Angelique, of Scottdale and Glenn S. Pitzer and his wife, Lynn, of Scottdale; six grandchildren, Heather Kolbasowski, Matthew, Paul T. "Ted, " Thomas, Tim and Scott Pitzer; and his sister, Jane Rainone of Northfield, N.J. Paul's family will receive friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at which time visitation will be concluded. Those who desire to join his family for his funeral service are invited to attend Monday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. in Trinity United Methodist Church, Scottdale, with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Paul Morris, officiating. Committal services and entombment will follow in Middle Churches Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Township. In lieu of flowers, Paul's family suggests memorials be made to the World War II Memorial Fund, in memory of Paul H. Pitzer.
Scottdale
James Milton Porter, 60, of Pittsburgh Street, Scottdale, passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. Milt was born Oct. 5, 1941, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Claude Emerson and Alice Mae Struckoff Porter. Milt was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Scottdale, and an avid auto racing fan. Milt is survived by his loving children, Sherry Snyder and husband, David, of Ruffsdale, James M. Porter Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Scottdale and Susan Young and husband, Allen, of Warrenton, Va.; five grandchildren, Madalyn Snyder, Jacob, Hannah and Olivia Porter and Marissa Young; four sisters, Phyllis Colbert and husband, Joseph, of Dickerson Run, Lynda Keefer and husband, William, of Scottdale RD1, Claudia Gardner and husband, James, of Scottdale and Alice Helman and husband, John, of Scottdale; an uncle, A. William Porter and wife, Ivalean, of Scottdale; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from noon to 2 p.m. Service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with his pastor, the Rev. Jeannette
Clarence Ward Sadler, 83, of Penn Township, Jeannette, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at his residence. He was born in Sadlers Crossing, March 17, 1918, a son of the late Clarence W. Sr. and Margaret Miller Sadler. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ of Jeannette, and a veteran of World War II, where he served with the Army Air Corps as a nose gunner in the Pacific Theatre. He was a graduate of Jeannette Senior High School, a member of Harrold Grange #1984, Harrold Senior Citizens, Penn Township Senior Citizens, St. Barbara's Young and Heart. Mr. Sadler was a retired manager of the former Harris-Boyer Bunny Bread Co. of Greensburg and was later a custodian at Westmoreland County Community College. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Mae Frye Sadler; and a sister, Ruth Sadler. He is survived by a daughter, Carol A. Urtin and her husband, Charles G., of Penn Township, Jeannette; a granddaughter, Merry K. Deyarmin and her husband, Thomas, of Jeannette; a brother, Frank Sadler and his wife, Bertha, of Jeannette; and a sister, Jean Hickey of Butler. Friends will be received Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the LAWRENCE J. McCLURE FUNERAL HOME, 112 N. Second St., Jeannette, where a funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Robin Keating, officiating. Interment with full military honors by the Jeannette Combined Veterans will follow in Jeannette Memorial Park. Catherine "Kay" Bostedo Santavicca, 75, of Trafford, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Hallmark Assisted Living, North Versailles. She was born June 21, 1926, in Trafford, a daughter of the late Harry and Catherine Boyle Bostedo. She was a member of St. Regis Church and Sons of Columbus of America, Frank Deninno Council 70. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Renger. She is survived by her beloved husband, C. Adam Santavicca; three loving children, Dr. Domenic (Barbara) Santavicca, Edward (Kathy) Santavicca and Kathie Wilpizeski; two brothers, John and Jim Bostedo; five sisters, Helen Fanty, Jean English, Thelma Johnson, Sarah Zigarovich and June Polishen; two granddaughters; and six grandsons. Friends will be received at the DAVID A. RITTER FUNERAL HOME, 220 Edgewood Ave., Trafford, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Regis Church with Father James D. Betty J. Saxman, 80, of Latrobe, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Crabtree, a daughter of the late Thompson and Hilda (Carlson) Brown. She was previously employed by Kennametal. She was a member of Latrobe United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Oliver, James, Thomas and Harry Brown. She is survived by her husband, John W. Saxman; her children, Pamela S. Clister and her husband, James, of Mt. Lebanon, John B. Saxman and his wife, Sheryl, of Yorktown, Va., and Harry C. Saxman and his wife, Donna, of North Potomac, Md.; seven grandchildren, Lisa Brown, Kristin Loffreda-Mancinelli, Lauren Clister, Holly Clister, Jake Saxman, Mark Saxman and Scott Saxman; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Stephanie Brown and Alessandra and Isabella Loffreda-Mancinelli; and two sisters, Ruth Keenan of Greensburg and Doris Davanti of Jeannette. Friends will be received in the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Latrobe United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vera Marie Plaisted Scott, 83, of Butler, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Passavant Retirement Center, Zelienople. Born Feb. 11, 1918, in Graham Terrace (Butler), a daughter of Roy C. and Anna Stewart Plaisted. Vera was predeceased by her husband, Arthur L., in 1983; an infant child in 1937; her parents; and seven siblings. Surviving are her son, Edward Arthur Scott and his wife, Elaine, of Greensburg; four granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; a brother, William D. Plaisted and his wife, Pat, of Butler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Vera was a member of the Community Alliance Church of Mercer Road. She was retired as the district manager for Stanley Home Products. Vera was proud to have served as a Red Cross volunteer nurse's aide during World War II, at the Butler Hospital. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME INC., 124 E. North St., Butler. Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Joel Mattsson-Boze officiating. Burial in Butler County Memorial Park. Joan B. (Shellenbarger) Smetak, 73, of Vernon Hills, Ill., formerly of Irwin, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in Libertyville, Ill. She was born April 4, 1928, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Herbert and Blanche (Bates) Shellenbarger. She had been employed as a secretary by Robertshaw Controls, and had retired from Signet Bank in Richmond, Va. She attended Robert Morris Business School, Pittsburgh. Survivors include her husband, George Smetak; a son, Edward Smetak of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Carol Fijalkiewicz and husband, Joseph, of Mundelein, Ill.; her twin brother, John Shellenbarger of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two grandsons, Michael and Matthew Fijalkiewicz. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin. Augustine M. Taliercio, 81, of South Greensburg, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. He was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Anthony and Cravoluri Gentilina Taliercio. He was a retired longshoreman for the I.L.A. of Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a member of the Word of Life Ministries, Greensburg, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Earvolino Taliercio; a brother, James Casio; and a sister, Grace Schancipori. He is survived by two sons, Anthony J. Taliercio and his wife, Ellen, of Staten Island, N.Y., and Pastor Henry T. Taliercio and his wife, Anne, of South Greensburg; a daughter, Carol Perrone and her husband, Ross, of Greensburg; three grandchildren, Charles and Elizabeth Perrone and Ryan Taliercio; a brother, Jerry Taliercio and his wife, Patricia, in Arizona; a sister, Lena Drago of Monroe, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; and his loving companion, Margaret Heskey of Hunker. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Additional visitation will be held Monday in the Word of Life Ministries, Route 136, Greensburg, from 10 until 11 a.m., the time of service, with Pastor Thomas A.
