George A. Coulter, 81, of Fleetville, Pa., and previous longtime resident of Latrobe, was stricken by a sudden illness on Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, and succumbed the following day at Community Medical Center in Scranton. He was the husband of Lydia Ann Coulter, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 24. Born in 1918 at Pitcairn, near Pittsburgh, to the late Paul J. and Margaret M. Coulter, he graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1936. He then embarked on what was to be a 50-year career as a printer. He began his career as a linotype operator at the Latrobe Bulletin. Except for an interruption to serve with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II, he continued working there through the 1950s and into the 1960s. He served the Latrobe community in several roles, faithfully answering fire alarms as a volunteer fireman and serving as a prominent layman of the Latrobe Methodist Church. At the church he served as a Sunday school teacher, an intermediate youth group leader and as an usher. In 1966, he and his wife each made career decisions that brought them to northeastern Pennsylvania. In the town of Fleetville, some 15 miles north of Scranton, they bought a home in a pine forest at the edge of Baylor's Lake. He continued working as a printer, now with the Wilkes-Barre firm of Llewellyn & McKane where he was instrumental in the early years of that company's transition to computerized printing operations. Even before his retirement from printing in 1987, he partnered with his wife in serving many communities. He was a founding member of The Baylor's Land Corp., (an organization to preserve land values and water quality), a long-serving officer in the association that oversees the Baylor's Lake community of nearly 100 families, and a dedicated and steadfast supporter of the Lacawac Foundation, where over the years his services in many volunteer capacities helped further Lacawac's goals of preserving acres of forests and lakes. Preceded in death by his brother, Clyde, he is survived by his wife and his children, George R. Coulter of Narberth, Pa., and Cynthia A. Marcinik of Latrobe; and by two grandchildren, Dinah Marcinik of Pittsburgh and Jonathan Marcinik of Shady Side, Md. On Saturday, Nov. 20, friends will gather at 2 p.m. at the Factoryville Methodist Church to join in a memorial service. On Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., friends are invited to call on the family at their residence on Pinewoods Road at Baylor's Lake in Fleetville.
