The Rev. John J. Scanlon, 84, of North Versailles, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, in Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. Born Jan. 4, 1915, in Pittsburgh. He was the former pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine Church, East McKeesport. He was ordained on June 14, 1942, in St. Vincent Archabbey by Bishop Boyle. His first parish was St. Canice in Knoxville from Oct. 8, 1942, to June 25, 1952. He went on to St. James in Wilkinsburg (June 26, 1952, to June 25, 1957), St. Paul's in Butler (June 13, 1957, to Jan. 16, 1962), and Our Lady of Victory in Harwick (Jan. 17, 1962 to June 6, 1966). He then served as pastor of St. Robert's from June 7, 1966, until his retirement on June 22, 1992. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Florence Scanlon of Pittsburgh; a niece, Florence "Bunny" Wilmot; two grandnephews; and many friends. Friends will be received Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. in the JAMES F. KUTCH FUNERAL HOME, 433 Greensburg Ave. (Route 30), East McKeesport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, East McKeesport, with Bishop Donald Wuerl as celebrant. Entombment New St. Joseph Mausoleum, North Versailles. Everyone please meet at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 1313 Fifth Ave., East McKeesport, PA 15137.
Floramae DeFloria Smith, 62, of Southwest Greensburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at her home. She was born Aug. 10, 1937, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Giuseppi "Joseph" and Rosina "Rose" Massari DeFloria. She was previously employed as a secretary for the admissions department of St. Vincent College. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church, the Rosary Altar Society, the Cercemaggiore Association of Pennsylvania, and was active in the Compassionate Friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert F. "Bob" Smith; three brothers, Frank "Boots, " James, and Thomas DeFloria; three infant brothers; and a sister, Genevieve M. Rocco. She is survived by her husband, Paul H. Smith; two sons, Dirk A. Smith and wife, Sherri, of Greensburg, and Paul H. Smith Jr. of Southwest Greensburg; and a daughter, Roseanne Smith, also of Southwest Greensburg; three brothers, John B. DeFloria and wife, Christine, Dominick "Bert" DeFloria and wife, Nita, and Joseph DeFloria Jr. and wife, Dorothy, all of Greensburg; a sister, Anna Marie Stabile of Greensburg; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends will be received at the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME, 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, (724) 837-0020, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. (no viewing Thanksgiving Day). A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, Greensburg. Interment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township.

Anthony M. Tyska, 87, formerly of Everson, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 23, 1999, in Means Personal Care Home, Connellsville, where he had been a resident for the past two years. He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Steve Tyska. Anthony was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Everson, and was a retired coal miner. He is survived by a son, Anthony Tyska of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Sylvia Jean Goodyear and her husband, James, of Carlisle and Sally Ann Koval of Scottdale; and his extended family, Karen and Russell Christner and their children, Eric, Stacey and Randy, of Everson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Mucha Tyska, on Oct. 17, 1973. Friends will be received in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the time of a blessing service with the Rev. Dennis A. Bogusz, pastor of St. Joseph R.C. Church, Everson, officiating. Interment will follow Friday in St. Joseph R.C. Parish Cemetery, Everson.
Elizabeth M. (Clement) Vairus, 88, of Sutersville, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at her home. She was born March 12, 1911, in West Newton, a daughter of the late Dominic and Sylvia DiSantis Clement. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Sutersville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Vairus, in 1976; and three brothers, Tony, John and Vincent Clement. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jean Vairus of Sutersville; two brothers, Wittie Clement and wife, Marie, of Sutersville and Frank Clement of Turtle Creek; four sisters, Mary Ferree of Sutersville, Esther Heskey of Youngwood, Eleanor Gras and husband, Bill, and Sylvia Boes and husband, Werner, all of West Newton; also a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and two great-great-nephews. Friends will be received at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Sutersville, with the Rev. James D. Vasil as celebrant. Interment West Newton Cemetery. The rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Thamer Vandergraft III, Fran VanHorn, Kathy Wisniewski, Shirley "Chobo" Coy, Anna Evans, Jan Vida, Daniel Vandergraft, and the late Thomas Shane Vandergraft. Brother of Anne Barone. Michael A. Adams Jr., 92, of Wall, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999. He was a son of the late Michael A. Sr. and Elizabeth (Petrosky) Adams. Beloved husband of 63 years of Margaret (Olear) Adams. Father of Judith (Walter) Smith and Richard W. (the late Bonnie) Adams. Grandfather of Alan W., Gary E., and Mark W. Smith and Chad Bielec. Great-grandfather of Ryan A., Kyle, Michael Ross and Julia M. Smith. Brother of Elizabeth Ruszkiewicz, and the late Ann Hochlinski, Mary Ersik, and George Adams; numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the ALFIERI FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 Marguerite Ave., Wilmerding, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday until the time of the service in the funeral home at 11:30 a.m., followed by Mass in St. Jude the Apostle Church at noon.
Agnes S. (Morrell) Beitz, 91, of North Huntingdon, formerly of McKeesport, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at the residence of her son, Ronald J. Beitz. Born June 1, 1908, in Sutersville, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Susanna Wood Morrell, and wife of the late Harry J. Beitz. She was a member of the Evangelical Congregational Church in McKeesport and also was retired from the Crown Chocolate Co. in McKeesport. She is survived by sons, Ronald J. Beitz of North Huntingdon and Dennis H. Beitz of Keystone Heights, Fla.; daughter, Charlotte Schwalm of Elizabeth Township; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; also nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JAYCOX-JAWORSKI FUNERAL HOME INC., 2703 O'Neil Blvd., McKeesport. Services in the chapel of the funeral home Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Howard F. Peters officiating. Entombment in the McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery Mausoleum. Emma R. Blaney, 95, of Perryopolis, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at 2:10 p.m., in Havencrest Nursing Home, Monongahela. She was born Feb. 29, 1904, in Perryopolis, a daughter of the late Albert William and Edith Moore Ramsier. Emma was a retired elementary school teacher from Perry Township School District. A lifelong member of the First Christian Church, Perryopolis. A member of the Perryopolis Senior Citizen Center, and Pennsylvania and Fayette County Association of School Retirees. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ruth A. McIlravey, of Bartow, Fla.; two nieces, Mrs. Robert (Agnes) Sobrito of LaMesa, Calif., and Ms. Mary Jane Ramsier of Chambersburg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Blaney; a brother, Russell L. Ramsier Sr.; a sister, Gertrude Ramsier; and a nephew, Russell L. Ramsier Jr. Friends will be received in the BLAIR-LOWTHER FUNERAL HOME INC., 106 E. Independence St., Perryopolis, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday in the First Christian Church, Perryopolis, from 9 to 10 a.m., the hour of service, with the Rev. Paul M. Ragle officiating. Marietta Chapman, of McKeesport, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, in McKeesport Hospital. Born Dec. 8, 1927, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late John and Anna Mae Chadwick Wills. Wife of the late Thomas E. Chapman. Former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, North Huntingdon Township, a member of the Pin Busters of White Oak Bowling Lanes, the McKeesport Turner's, and the Gold Key Club of the McKeesport Hospital. Survived by four daughters, Barbara Stuffer of Jeannette, Teddi Madak of White Oak Borough, Diane Stuffer of Delmont, and Ruth Ann Hiner of Farmington Hills, Mich.; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Friends are being received today in the WILLIAM H. CRAIG FUNERAL HOME, 3000 Versailles Ave., McKeesport, Pa., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. David Weeks officiating. Interment will be in Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth Township.
