Southwest Greensburg
The Rev. Alvin K. Smith, 94, of Southwest Greensburg, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, in his home. He was born Aug. 5, 1907, in Greensburg, a son of the late Charles B. and Gertrude "Dottie" Smith. Rev. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Greensburg. He was a former employee of the Tribune-Review in Greensburg for 30 years, then served as pastor of the Penn United Methodist Church from 1954 to 1956, then as pastor of the Pleasant Unity United Methodist Church from 1956 to 1970, then as pastor of the Uniontown United Methodist Church from 1970 until he retired in 1977. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Young Smith; a daughter, Shirley Stouffer; and a brother, Raymond Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Doris E. Linn and husband, Art, of Pittsburgh; and a brother, W. Earl Smith and wife, Eleanor, of Greensburg. Family and friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert C. Wilson officiating (PLEASE GO DIRECTLY TO CHURCH). Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. The family wishes memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church in Greensburg. Terence L. Graft, funeral director, in charge of the arrangements.
Pleasant Unity
Barbara (Uschock) Sylvester, 87, of Pleasant Unity, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in her home. She was born Jan. 14, 1914, in Weltytown, a daughter of the late Wassel and Barbara (Kovalchik) Uschock. Prior to retirement, she was the owner and operator of the former Silver Dollar Lounge in Irwin, and was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Whitney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Sylvester; two sons, Robert C. and Roger C. Sylvester; a great-grandson, Zachary L. Kloos; three brothers, Michael, Peter and William Uschock; four sisters, Julia Krovinak, Anna Mizikar, Katherine Argie and Josephine Lawrence; and a son-in-law, Lewis J. Kloos. She is survived by two daughters, Carmen Kloos of Latrobe RD1 and Barbara Lander and husband, Ronald, with whom she lived in Pleasant Unity; a daughter-in-law, Gwen Sylvester of Pleasant Unity; nine grandchildren, including Rhonda Henschel, who helped care for her; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Sophie Segreti of Pittsburgh; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends received at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Pleasant Unity, Sunday and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A blessing service will be held Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township.
Derry
Jack R. Swartz, 80, of Derry, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Three Springs, Pa., a son of the late John A. and Edith Roher Swartz. He was a member of the Derry Presbyterian Church, a life member of VFW Post 444, Derry, a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, and a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Louise E. McWherter Swartz; a brother, Paul Swartz of Decarta, Ga.; two sisters, Vera Steel of Huntingdon and Neva Griffith of Tyrone; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Friends received Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the McCABE FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Third Ave., Derry, where service will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. with his pastor, the Rev. F. Neal Galley, officiating. Interment will follow in Coles Cemetery, Derry. VFW Post 444, Derry, will conduct a service Monday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Joseph R. Turchan, of Munhall, on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001. Beloved husband of Ann (Kapucewsko); father of Bonita Ann Vanek of Irwin and Daniel Turchan of Trafford; brother of John Turchan of Trafford and the late Mary Oreski. Also survived by three grandchildren. Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the SAVOLSKIS-WASIK-GLENN FUNERAL HOME INC., 3501 Main St., Munhall. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Rita Church, Munhall.

Elizabeth A. (Barr) Bartolicius, 83, on Friday, Nov. 2, 2001. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leo E. (Barr) Bartolicius. She is survived by her loving son, Lee R. Bartolicius and his dear friend Sarah Banal of West View; grandchildren, Lee R. Bartolicius and his wife Tammy of Butler, and Lesa M. McElwain and her husband Ron of Fombell; great-grandchildren, Alexandra M. Foster, Samantha L. Bear, Lee R. Bartolicius III, Nicole T. Foster, Levi J. Bartolicius, Hunter L. Bartolicius and Dillon D.J. McElwain. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Mae Margaret Crawford, Sophia Rusch, Mildred Bestwick and Margaret Schmidt; and brothers, James, Buss, John and Bill Crawford.
