James E. Macdonald
Helped found Coggeshall Farm
James E. Macdonald, 81, of Bristol, died Thursday, Jan 28, 1999, at his home on Poppasquash Road. One of the founders of Bristol's Coggeshall Farm Museum, he was the husband of Jean B (Lett) Macdonald. Born in Quincy, Mass, a son of the late James Edmund and Mary (MacDonald) Macdonald, he was raised in Somerville, Mass. After graduating from high school, he entered the US Navy and was stationed in New Haven, Conn, and Portland, Maine, where he was responsible for recruiting. During his enlistment, he met his wife, who was serving as the female voice in the government's Voice of America program. Following his departure from the service, he attended Columbia University under the GI Bill and graduated with a law degree from St. John's University in New York City. After graduating, he served as contracts manager for Electric Boat in Groton, Conn, and also worked for the former Curtiss Wright Aviation Co and Pacific Gas and Electric. In 1955, he moved to Ohio to help run the Lima Petrochemical complex of the Standard Oil Co. He left the job in 1965 to pursue what would prove to be a long and successful career in real estate. And though his career - which centered around the purchase and rehabilitation of large, troubled industrial complexes, including General Motors Corp's enormous Cleveland diesel engine plant in the early 1960s - was successful, family members remember him as much for his eccentricities as his accomplishments. In a landmark case, Mr. Macdonald sued a country club he had joined in Ohio for its failure to admit Jewish members. The case, which was eventually lost, went all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court. A lifelong Democrat, he was willing to speak for - or against - any candidate for public office he felt was not going to get the job done. In the early 1960s, he had a sign unfurled on one of his buildings directly behind a platform where Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater was set to give a candidacy speech. When the nationally televised speech was seen on screens across America, viewers saw Mr. Goldwater standing in front of a four-story-high sign reading "LBJ for the USA." An enthusiastic pilot, he commuted for years between his Rhode Island home and the Midwest in his twin-engine plane. In the 1970s, he formed a small regional airline and provided daily service from Newport to New York City. Mr. Macdonald, who also kept homes in Lima, Ohio, and Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands, was a member of scores of clubs and societies. He was admitted to Lloyd's of London in the 1960s as an underwriter, and served on the boards of directors of Wharf Holdings Ltd in the UK, Indiana Warehouses, Crosley Building Corp, Roger Williams University, Roger Williams Hospital, Rhode Island Port Authority and others. He was chairman of Realty Income Trust from 1975 to 1977. In addition to his work in establishing Coggeshall Farm, he served as the chairman of the Providence Foundation and was instrumental in efforts to relocate the Providence train station. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, BPOE, Hope Club, former Turks Head Club, Bristol Yacht Club, Columbia Club in Indianapolis and Landsdowne Club in London. Besides his wife, he leaves a sister, Helen Macdonald Harrison of Charlestown, Mass; a daughter, Georgina Macdonald of Bristol and Boston; two sons, Roderick Macdonald of Boston and Angus Macdonald of Providence and Westport Point; and four grandchildren, Angus Davis of Burlingame, Calif; James A Macdonald and Hope Midgley Macdonald of Providence and Michael Galante Macdonald of Boston. He was the brother of the late John Macdonald. A memorial service was held Sunday in Bristol. Arrangements were handled by the Sansone Funeral Home.
