Manuel DeFaria, 86, formerly of Metacom Avenue, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Silver Creek Manor. He was the husband of the late Irene (Simao) DeFaria. Born in Seekonk, he lived in São Miguel, Açores, for many years before moving to Bristol 22 years ago. He was the son of the late Joseph M. and Francesca E. (DaSilva) DeFaria. Mr. DeFaria was a wire worker for 35 years for the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. in both Bristol and Portsmouth. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth's Church and was a member of the church's Holy Name Society and Holy Ghost Committee. He leaves a daughter, Rosemary DeFaria of Miami; a brother, Antonio DeFaria of Toronto, Canada; and two sisters, Rosario Lopes of Toronto and Madelena Moniz of São Miguel. He was the brother of the late Maria and Joseph Faria. Funeral services were from Sansone Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 6, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Virginio Soares
Union president, worked for Plymouth Rubber
Virginio "Gino" Soares, 67, of Center Conway, N.H., and Homosassa, Fla., and formerly of Briggs Road, Westport, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Maine Medical Center. He was the former husband of Anita (Thorpe) Davis of Las Vegas and was the companion of Goldie Rae Hermort of Center Conway. Born in São Miguel, Açores, he was a son of the late Victorino and Connie (Frias) Soares. He lived in Westport and Fall River for many years, and resided in New Hampshire and Florida for the past 10 years. Mr. Soares was a former president of Local 573 of the American Rubber Workers Union. He worked at Plymouth Rubber in Canton, Mass., for many years, where he was a shop steward. More recently, he was a landscaper at North Conway Cemetery in North Conway, N.H. Besides his former wife and his companion, he leaves two sons, Gino Soares and Victor Soares, both of Westport; two daughters, Donna De Faria of Boston and Sandrea Dias of Westport; four brothers, Joseph, Victorino, John and Antone Soares, all of Fall River; and eight grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Timothy Soares and a brother of the late Deolinda Pelletier. After cremation, his memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, at 7 p.m. at Auclair Funeral Home, 690 South Main St., Fall River.

David S. Rocha
Fall River resident died in Tiverton
David S. Rocha, 26, of 367 Dwelly St., Fall River, and formerly of Osborne Street, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, in Tiverton. Born in Fall River, he was a son of Antone J. and Linda M. (Rapoza) Rocha, both of Fall River. He was a lifelong Fall River resident. Mr. Rocha was employed part time for three years at New England Pizza. He was a graduate of Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, Class of 1994. He played baseball for the Maplewood Little League and Maplewood Babe Ruth League. Besides his parents, he leaves two sisters, Tracy Ann Duarte of Rehoboth and Jennifer L. Rocha of Lake Normand, N.C.; a friend, Autumn Nugent of Westport, and an aunt and a nephew. He was the grandson of the late Antone E. Rocha and Manuel and Alice (Miranda) Rapoza. His funeral was on Saturday, March 2, from Oliveira Funeral Home, Fall River, followed by a funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Church, Fall River. He was buried in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.

Helen E. Belmore
Former Newport resident was born in Warren
Helen Eva Belmore, 92, of Grand Islander Nursing Home, Middletown, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the nursing home. Born in Warren on June 4, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Grzrvan) Delekta. She lived at 39 Webster St. in Newport for 30 years. Mrs. Belmore worked at the Torpedo Station during World War II, and then for General Electric as an assembler for 30 years, retiring in 1974. She was a former member of St. Augustin's Church. She enjoyed her garden and sewing for the family and grandchildren. She leaves a son, Donald J. Belmore of Portsmouth, and 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Clifford J. Belmore and Robert Belmore, and sister of the late Ignatius, Edward, John, Stacey and Catherine Delekta, Sophie Griener, Florence McDonald and Veronica Byrne. Her funeral was private. Doris M. Mastriano
Loved camping and artistic roller skating
Doris M. Mastriano, 86, of 21 Walter St. died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence. She was the wife of the late Joseph J. Mastriano. Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late James and Muriel (Lacombe) Feeley, she had lived in Barrington for more than 70 years. Mrs. Mastriano worked at the former S.E. Raines, now called I Shalom, in Warren, for 50 years, until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of the ladies auxiliaries of the American Legion, Post 10, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. She loved artistic roller skating and camping. She was a communicant of Holy Angels Church. Mrs. Mastriano leaves a son, William J. Mastriano of Taunton, Mass.; a daughter, Cheryl A. Ouellette of Barrington; and a sister, Eileen Vaughn of Taunton. She was a sister of the late James Feeley. Funeral services were held Monday, March 4, from Wilbur Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in Holy Angels Church. Burial followed in Maria del Campo Cemetery.

Robert Hall Cochrane, 83, of Jacksonville, Fla. and formerly of Barrington, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Virginia (Burleigh) Cochrane; they had been married for 61 years. Born in Barrington, Mr. Cochrane was a son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Cochrane. He was a member of Ortega Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville and the BPOE Jacksonville Lodge 221. Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Richard Cochrane of East Providence, Robert Cochrane of Falmouth, Mass., Bruce Cochrane of Bristol and Brian Cochrane of Crystal River, Fla.; a daughter, Marcia Cochrane Hahn of Jacksonville, and 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. in Ortega Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private.

Lucille (Accardi) Hawkins, 89, of 72 Truman Ave., Warren, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol. She was the wife of the late Robert N. Hawkins and the late James Lanzire. Born and raised in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Gabriel and Michelina (Gargiulo) Accardi. She was a Warren resident for more than 50 years after moving from Bristol. She was a supervisor for 39 years at the former Crown Fastener Co. in Warren before retiring in the 1970s. She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Mrs. Hawkins leaves a son, Douglas J. Lanzire of Bristol; three granddaughters, Kerri Duarte and Kendra and Kimberly Lanzire, all of Bristol; and two brothers, Anthony Accardi of Dayton, Ohio, and Carl Accardi of Bristol. She was the sister of the late Peter, Gene and Joseph Accardi. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 12, from Sansone Funeral Home, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial followed in North Burial Ground. Theresa (Federico) Carlone, 87, of Greylock Road died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center. She was the wife of the late Anthony Carlone, former Bristol chief of police. Born in Bristol to the late Ambrose and Antonetta (Battaglia) Federico, she was a lifelong resident. She was an assembler for 18 years at the former Coates and Clark Co. of Warren before retiring in 1975. She had previously worked at the former Bristol Lace Works. Mrs. Carlone was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of that church's Rosary and Altar Society. She leaves a son, Richard A. Carlone of Bristol; two grandchildren, Donna M. Habershaw and Anthony R. Carlone of Bristol; four great-grandchildren, Christina E. and John L. Habershaw III and Anthony J. and Allisa C. Carlone, all of Bristol; and a sister, Emily Correira of Bristol. She was a sister of the late Anthony, Aniello, Frank and Joseph Federico, Rose Tessier and Frances Azzarone. Edmund L. Alves, 77, of Bernard Avenue, Barrington, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence. He was the husband of Evelyn B. (Stone) Alves. They had been married for 52 years. Born in Bristol, a son of the late John and Mary (Pereira) Alves, he had lived in Barrington for over 50 years. Mr. Alves was a Realtor for Coleman Realtors of Barrington for 37 years, and was still working at the time of his death. He was a member of the Rhode Island and Providence Board of Realtors, where he served on its board of ethics. He was a graduate of Johnson & Wales University, receiving a degree in business. He was a communicant of St. Luke's Church. Mr. Alves was an avid gardener. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Edmund L. Alves Jr. and Ronald W. Alves, both of Barrington, and Walter J. Alves of Metairie, La.; a daughter, Sharon E. Coakley of South Dartmouth, Mass.; five sisters, Mabel Soares, Germaine Lagarto and Dorothy Schinigoi, all of Bristol, and Mary Almeida and Lenora Muccino, both of Warren, and seven grandchildren. He was the brother of the late John, Joseph and Manuel Alves and Alice Travers. Funeral services were yesterday, March 13, from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home in Riverside, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Luke's Church, Barrington. Burial followed in Forest Chapel Cemetery, Barrington.

Funeral services for John F. Sardinha were held Thursday, March 7, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth's Church. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant of the Mass. The Rev. Louis Diogo, the Rev. Joseph Santos, the Rev. William Sullivan, the Rev. Joseph Murrin, the Rev. Dennis Kieton, the Rev. John McNulty, Deacon Robert Gallo and Deacon Thomas Bouchard were concelebrants. Readers were Sister Mary Sardinha and Loretta Francis. Gifts were presented by Kristen and Beth Chianese. The Bristol Train of Artillery served as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Sardinha, 48, of Metacom Avenue died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Frances G. Evans
Lifelong resident, nurse at Vets' Home
Frances G. (Gallagher) Evans, 86, of Hope Street died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Bristol. She was the wife of the late Louis G. Evans. Born in Providence, Mrs. Evans was the daughter of the late John and Anne (Cashin) Gallagher. She was a lifelong resident of Bristol. Mrs. Evans graduated from Colt Memorial High School and R.I. Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at the R.I. Veterans' Home for 20 years before retiring in 1977. Mrs. Evans leaves two sons, John M. Evans of Bristol and Robert P. Evans of Swansea; a daughter, Sally Monahon of South Kingstown, and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, March 14, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church, 330 Wood St. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground, Hope Street.

John M. Ferreira
Portsmouth High School assistant principal
John M. Ferreira, 64, of 64 Fir Ave., Tiverton, died at home on Thursday, March 7, 2002, following an illness. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Medeiros) Ferreira. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Gloria Ferreira, he lived in Fall River for 24 years before moving to Tiverton in 1962. Mr. Ferreira was the vice principal at Portsmouth High School for over 23 years. He had previously taught at Morton Junior High School and was a former assistant football coach at B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River. A 1955 graduate of Coyle-Cassidy High School and a 1959 alumnus of Providence College, he earned a master's in education degree at Bridgewater State College in 1963. During his career at Portsmouth High School, Mr. Ferreira taught social studies, Spanish and Portuguese, established the Portuguese Studies Program, headed the Work Experience Program from its inception, and was pivotal in instituting the Alternative Learning Program. He served as head football coach from 1979 to 1984 and was grand marshal of the Portsmouth High Homecoming Parade in 2001. His memberships included the National Education Association, Rhode Island Association of School Principals and National Association of Secondary School Principals. He was a notary public and former owner of Ferreira Real Estate. He also served as chairman of the Capital Improvements Committee at Forest Glen in North Conway, N.H. Mr. Ferreira was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Little Compton and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his wife of 45 years, he leaves four sons, John M. Ferreira Jr. and Mark S. Ferreira, both of Tiverton; Gregory V. Ferreira of Dighton, Mass., and Brian T. Ferreira of Fall River; a daughter, Jocelyn E. Devine of Tiverton; and eight grandchildren, four nieces and a nephew. His funeral was held on Monday, March 11, from Silva-Faria Funeral Home in Fall River. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.

Louise H. Mercer
Little Compton resident, ranked tennis player
Louise Hedlund Mercer, 85, of Quicksand Pond, Little Compton, died unexpectedly at home on Saturday, March 9, 2002. She was the wife of the late Charles S. Mercer. Born on February 10, 1917, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Oscar F. and Elsie (Hilliard) Hedlund. She lived in Little Compton since 1975, formerly residing in Northborough, Mass. Mrs. Mercer was a graduate of Lasell Junior College, and was a ranked tennis player under the tutelage of Hazel Wightman of Wightman Cup fame. A member of the Sakonnet Golf Club, Mrs. Mercer also belonged to the local Thursday Afternoon Bowling Club where she was as much respected for her sense of fair play and good humor as her consistent string of victories. She was an avid birder and devoted member of the little Compton Garden Club and had raised hay, sheep and chickens with her husband. Mrs. Mercer was a longtime, faithful communicant at St. Andrew's by-the-Sea Church, serving as a committee volunteer and a volunteer at the Thursday Thrift Shop. An excellent cook, she bolstered the spirits of many sick and weary with special deliveries of her Spanish Cream and good cheer. She leaves two sons, Charles B. Mercer of Ipswich, Mass., and David S. Mercer of Little Compton, and four grandchildren and a great-grandson. She was the mother of the late Richard Mercer. A memorial service for Mrs. Mercer is at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, at St. Andrew's by-the-Sea, 182 Willow Ave., north of the Commons. Marjorie D. Gordon
Leaves a daughter in Barrington
Marjorie D. Gordon, 95, of Concord, N.H., died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Havenwood in Concord. Born in Newton, Mass., a daughter of the late John and Mary Dick, she was a social worker for the State of Massachusetts Division of the Blind for 22 years, beginning the job after raising her four children. She graduated from Arlington (Mass.) High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University. She later received a master's degree in social work from Simmons College. She had lived in Arlington and Amherst, Mass., and Concord and Harrisville, N.H. Mrs. Gordon had been a member of the Religious Society of Friends (the Quakers) since 1940 and remained active in the Concord Meeting until her passing. She loved her family, classical music, old-time square dancing, traveling and reading. She leaves a daughter, Ann Mason of Barrington; a son, Dudley Laufman of Canterbury, N.H.; and nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five foster grandchildren and two foster great-grandchildren. She was the former wife of the late Miller Laufman, sister of the late John Dick and mother of the late Janet, Alan and Philip Laufman. A memorial service in the manner of the Friends will be held Sunday, April 7, at 10 a.m. in Havenwood, 33 Christian Ave., Concord. Portsmouth resident, retired medical secretary
Edith Jean (Reise) Guldemond, 73, of 397 Wapping Road, Portsmouth, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Evert Guldemond. Born in Newport on Nov. 20, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Alvin G. and Edith (Chase) Reise. Mrs. Guldemond had worked as a medical secretary for Dr. Anthony Carrellas Sr. for 30 years until her retirement in the late 1980s. She enjoyed vacationing in northern Maine, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Tina Guldemond of Middletown; a son, Martin Paul Guldemond of Laconia, N.H.; a sister, Marguerite Viti of Middletown, and three grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Alvin G. Reise Jr. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Enjoyed writing for The Bridge
Adeline "Addie" (St. Germain) Hardisty, 84, of Warwick died Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Sunny View Nursing Home in Warwick. She was the wife of the late Donald B. Hardisty. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Adrian and Elizabeth (Shaw) St. Germain, she grew up in Warren and graduated from Warren High School. After living in Barrington and Riverside, she moved to Warwick, where she lived in the Pawtuxet Village neighborhood. She was one of the original teachers at the Happy Hollow Nursery School. There, her children called her Miss Addie. She also wrote articles for the Pawtuxet newspaper The Bridge, and was instrumental in starting the annual Gaspee Days parade. Mrs. Hardisty leaves a daughter, Donna Gordon of Warwick; two sons, Leonard Hardisty of Barrington and Jonathan Hardisty of Chelsea, Mass.; two sisters, Martha Davids of East Providence and Jane Battey of Cranston; a brother, Adrian St. Germain of Florida; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Elizabeth Sluzewski and Allison St. Germain, who died as an infant. Mrs. Hardisty's body was donated to the Brown University Medical School. Funeral services will be private.

Grace L. (Battcher) Chafee, 93, of Metacom Avenue, Warren, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Russell Chafee. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Emma Jane (Carter) Battcher. Before her retirement, she worked as a self-employed home care assistant, assisting with house cleaning and cooking. She was a member of St. Michael's Church, Bristol. She leaves several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Orrin, Frank, and Albert Battcher, Dora Meiggs and Elsie Battcher. A graveside service took place Friday, March 8, at the North Burial Ground, Bristol. Arrangements were by Connery- Smith Funeral Home, Bristol.

Rhode Island Hospital nurse for many years
Virginia "Ginny" (Oatley) Stringer, 84, of Sandra Lee Lane, Tiverton, and formerly of Narragansett, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Grand Island Center, Middletown. She was the wife of the late Louis D. Stringer. Born in Providence on Jan. 14, 1918, a daughter of the late Albert and Lillian Oatley, she lived in Cranston until her marriage in 1943, then in Narragansett for many years and in Tiverton for the past several years. Mrs. Stringer graduated from the Rhode Island School for Nurses in 1940 and worked at Rhode Island Hospital for over 20 years as an operating room nurse, floor nurse and head nurse. She leaves a son, Robert W. Stringer and his wife, Sheila, of Tiverton; two grandchildren, Ian S. Stringer and Calindy N. Stringer, both of Tiverton; and a sister, Genevive MacDonald of Florida. Bradford L. deWolf Jr., 14, of 85 Gibson Road, Bristol, a freshman at Mt. Hope High School in Bristol, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence. Born in Providence, a son of Bradford Levay and Wendy (Connors) deWolf, he was a lifelong Bristol resident. He was an avid lacrosse player and enjoyed sailing, boating and water sports. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hiking and camping. Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Marc T. deWolf; a sister, Kit C. deWolf; his paternal grandparents, Francois L. and Doris (Bertrand) deWolf, and his paternal great-grandmother, Majorie Weaver, all of Bristol; his maternal grandparents, Frederick J. and Cecelia (Pasqual) Connors, both of Barrington; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 19, in St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Bristol. Burial was private. Alice L. Redfern, 96, of Rumford, and formerly of Barrington, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of the late Harry Redfern. Born in Bristol, she was a daughter of the late William and Carrie (Gayton) Smith. She had lived in Barrington for over 50 years before moving to Rumford 10 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Michael and Grace Episcopal Church in Rumford and had previously served on the Altar Guild of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Barrington. She was a descendant of Richard Smith, the first recording town clerk of Bristol. She leaves a son, Carl Redfern of Newport; a daughter, Calais Loven of Rumford, and two grandchildren and a great-grandson. She was the sister of the late William and Richard Smith, Abby Jane Sherman, Ethel M. Denno, Edith M. Ross, Estella F. Gardins and Helen G. Flannagan. Funeral services were held Friday, March 15, in St. Michael and Grace Church. Burial was private.

Wife of former police chief, lifelong resident
Julianna (Tavares) Lewis, 92, of Child Street died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of the former Warren chief of police, the late George W. Lewis Sr. Born in Warren, Mrs. Lewis was a lifelong resident of the town. She was a daughter of the late Antonio and Maria (Nunes) Tavares. She was a bookkeeper for the former Wardwell Lumber Company and an avid cribbage player. She leaves two sons, George W. Lewis Jr. and Frank A. Lewis, both of Warren; a brother, Humberto Tavares of New Port Richie, Fla.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Alice Squillante, Gilda Spieker, Mary Valesh and Tony Tavares. Funeral services were privately held. Arrangements were made with William J. Smith and Son Funeral Home.
