Cornelius J. Bashaw - 9/26/00
Cornelius J. Bashaw, 86, of Carpenter Street, a former postal employee, died September 26, 2000, at his home. He was the husband of Doris M. (Gosselin) Bashaw. Born in Providence, a son of the late Francis and Margaret (Crowley) Bashaw, he was a resident of Warwick for over 40 years. He was employed as a postal clerk at the Turnkey Post Office in Providence, retiring in 1975 after 30 years of service. Mr. Bashaw served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. He saw action in the African, Middle Eastern, and European theaters. He was a member of St. Rose and St. Clement parish. Besides his wife he leaves five daughters, Barbara Ann Gilbody of Johnston, Susan A. Leneau of Pawtucket, and Kathleen M. Vickers, Maryann Bennett, and Karen A. Heon, all of Warwick; three sons, Michael J. Bashaw of Chicago, Dennis F. Bashaw in Mississippi, and Paul J. Bashaw in Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He was the brother of the late Howard, John, and Raymond Bashaw, and the late Margaret Brothers. Theodore T. Haley Sr. - 9/25/00
Theodore T. Haley Sr., 83, of Marblehead Road; a former carpenter, died September 25, 2000, at the Sunny View Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Margaret A. (Pearson) Haley. Born in Warwick, a son of the late Louis and Gladys (Tourtellotte) Haley, he was a lifelong resident of Warwick. Mr. Haley was a self-employed carpenter for 40 years before retiring in 1979. He leaves three sons, Theodore T. Haley Jr. of Hope, David T. and Stephen T. Haley, both of Warwick; a brother, Ernest Haley of Chepachet; three sisters, Dorothy Hall of Warwick, Edith Aimes of West Warwick, and Lena Pearson of Warwick; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The Reverend Robroy Mason - 9/25/00
The Reverend Robroy Mason, 71, of Harrington Avenue, an Episcopal priest and social activist, died September 25, 2000, at his home. He was the Rector Emeritus of the Church of the Resurrection. Born in Rhinelander, Wis., he was a son of the late Reverend Roy Wallace Mason and Jean (Hamilton) Mason. He was raised in Milwaukee, Wis. Reverend Mason was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, class of 1955, and received a master's degree from the university in 1956. He graduated from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, in Berkeley, Calif., in 1958, and was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church that same year. He received his master of divinity degree in 1971, from the same school, majoring in clinical pastoral education. From 1958-1961 he was the assistant rector in St. Cross Church, Hermosa Beach, Calif. He came to Rhode Island in 1961 and assumed the position of rector of St. Philip Church, West Warwick. He was appointed priest in charge of Christ Church, Swansea, in 1965. From 1966-1968, he assisted at St. Mark Church, Warwick, returning to Christ Church until 1974. He served as a human resource specialist for the State of Rhode Island Department of Elderly Affairs, and served as the department head of social services for Carties Health Center, Pawtucket, for 15 years. He consulted in social services at the Elmbrook Nursing Home, Providence. He served as chaplain at St. Elizabeth Home, Providence, until being appointed to the Church of the Resurrection in 1985. He was a charter member of the West Warwick-Coventry Association for Retardation, and established the parish day school at St. Philip Church. He established the only Boy Scout troop for retarded boys in Rhode Island, at St. Philip in 1964. He served as chaplain of the East Providence Rotary Club for six years, and was a member of the National Chapter of the RACA, and he established the Rhode Island chapter of that organization. He served as the chairman of the Episcopal Diocesan Commission on Alcoholism. He leaves two sons, Timothy H. Mason of North Bellmore, N.Y., and RobRoy M. Mason of Las Vegas; and a daughter, Tammisan M. Edwards of Maricopa, Calif. He was the brother of the late Hamilton B. Mason, Rosemary Houghton, and JeanBarbara Mason. A memorial Requiem Eucharist was celebrated in the Church of the Resurrection, 336 Norwood Ave. Burial was in Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield, Wis. Warren A. Reed - 9/25/00
Warren A. Reed, 74, of Vaughn Avenue, a private detective and a retired toolmaker, died September 25, 2000, at home. He was the husband of Carol A. (Gibson) Reed. Born in Providence, a son of the late Walter A. and Martha A. (Peterson) Reed, he had been a resident of Warwick for 12 years, formerly living in Chepachet. Mr. Reed had been a toolmaker for 40 years. He had worked at the former Gorham's for 15 years, retiring as the head of maintenance in the machine shop in 1983. He was a private detective for the last 20 years in Warwick, East Greenwich and Chepachet, and was a firearms instructor with the National Rifle Association. Mr. Reed served with the Army during World War II in the Pacific and received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained in Okinawa before being discharged as a sergeant. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Nathanael Greene Lodge 45 of Warwick. He was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Order of the Scottish Rite and Rhode Island Consistory, a member of the Palestine Temple in Providence and its Legion of Honor. He was a member of the 77th Infantry Division Association, the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association and the Smithfield Sportsmen's Club. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Stephen A. Reed of Warwick; two daughters, Rev. Melinda Reed of Vienna, Va., and Elizabeth Reed-Denbow of Foster; two stepsons, William G. Lundin and Robert W. Lundin, both of Warwick; two sisters, Marion E. R. Lundin of East Greenwich and Martha R. Safstom of Foster; and nine grandchildren. The funeral service was held in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Chapel, 2435 Warwick Ave. Burial was private. Mildred B. Olsson, 86, of 359 Greenwich Ave., an insurance representative for 20 years before retiring in 1976, died September 23, 2000, in Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late John A. Olsson. Born in Glocester, a daughter of the late Francis and Florence (Kemp) Blanchard, she lived in Warwick for 20 years after moving there from Cranston. She worked for the E.C. Shaghalian Agency in Cranston. Mrs. Olsson was a long-time member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Cranston, where she had been a member of the Philathea, Dorcas and Faith Circles, the Bible study group and the Bethany Seniors. She was also a member of Foster Grandparents of Rhode Island. She leaves a son, J. David Olsson of Ledyard, Conn.; two daughters, Lynne M. Sampson of Warwick and Beverly A. Goede of Divide, Colo.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral was held in Bethany Lutheran Church, 116 Rolfe St., Cranston. Burial was in Springvale Cemetery, Rumford. Vasiliki "Kiki" Panteleakis, 63, of Harvard Avenue, a restaurant co-owner, died September 25, 2000, at Women and Infants Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of George Panteleakis. Born in Sparta, Greece, a daughter of the late Peter and Eleni (Parthemou) Demas, she lived in Warwick since 1982, previously living in Providence. She and her husband owned Timmy's Restaurant in Warwick. She was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Cranston, and the Ladies of Philoctopos. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Constantinos Charlie Panteleakis of Warwick; three daughters, Georgia Feula of Cranston, and Eleni Montuori and Evgenia Panteleakis, both of Warwick; five brothers, Michael Demas and Jack Stavry, both of Long Island, N.Y., Nick Demas of Sparta, Greece, Tom Demas of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jimmy Stavry of Palm Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Louis Feula, Valerie Feula, Vasiliki Panteleakis and Paulina Montuori. Peter C. Girouard, 100, a resident of the Scandinavian Home, Broad Street, Cranston, and formerly of Wendell Road, Warwick, a retired electrical hoist engineer, died September 24, 2000, at the home. He was the husband of the late Hortense M. (Hurtubise) Girouard. He was born in Providence, a son of the late Jeremiah and Louise (Guay) Girouard, and lived in Warwick for 55 years before moving to Cranston seven years ago. Mr. Girouard was an electrical hoist engineer for the former Curran & Burton in Providence for 40 years before retiring in 1964. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local # 57. He had been a member of St. Peter Church in Warwick for 50 years. He is survived by four daughters, Hortense I. Westcott of East Greenwich, Alice C. Pearson of Warwick, Antoinette Murray of Jordanville, New York, and Mary F. Follett of Westerly; one son, Peter J. Girouard of Greene; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Joseph Girouard and Mae Girouard. He was the great grandfather of the late David Follett. Davida E. Greenstein, 68, of Quisset Court, a retired secretary, died September 23, 2000, at home. She was the wife of Stanley Babe Greenstein. Born in Lynn, Mass., a daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Bloom) Cohen, she lived in Warwick for eight years, previously living in Cranston. She was a secretary at Rhode Island Hospital for 20 years, retiring four years ago. She was a member of Hadassah, the Women's Jewish Bowling Congress, and a former member of Temple Torat Yisrael and its Sisterhood. She was on the board of directors of Wethersfield Commons. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Marc Greenstein, and his wife, Iris, of Cranston and Michael Greenstein and his wife Rhonda, of Warwick; a daughter, Hope Patton and her husband, Robert, of Cranston; a brother, Joel Cohen, and a sister, Rosalyn Factor, both of Warwick; and five granddaughters, Michelle, Abigail, Dara, Stephanie and Hayley. Paulette B. Callaghan, 48, of Damon Avenue, a bookkeeper, died September 23, 2000, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Joseph M. Callaghan. Born in Woonsocket, a daughter of Theresa F. (Petrin) Lafontaine of Woonsocket and the late Alfred J. Lafontaine, she had lived in Woonsocket before moving to Warwick in 1980. She was employed as a bookkeeper in the accounts payable division of the Insurance Reconstruction Service, Smithfield, for seven years, and formerly for Cranston Printworks, Cranston, for 14 years. She formerly was a hairdresser at Jeannine Beauty Parlor for eight years. She was a communicant of St. Benedict Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister, and a member and secretary of the finance committee. She was a volunteer for the CYO, and a member of the 25-Week Club. She also was an Avon representative. Besides her husband and mother, she leaves a daughter, Stephanie B. Callaghan; a son, Joseph T. Callaghan, and a sister, Monette I. Cormier, all of Warwick. (Hogg) Riddensdale. Born in Providence, a son of the late David and Louise (Stevenson) Riddensdale, he was a Warwick resident since 1952. He was employed as a foreman for Fulford Mfg. Co., formerly Samuel Moore Co. in Providence, for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific. He was a member of the Warwick Council, Knights of Columbus, and a communicant of St. Rose and St. Clement Parish. He leaves five daughters, Mary L. Riddensdale of Providence, Katherine F. Rose, Midge M. Campopiano and Jean M. Webster, all of Warwick, and Patricia A. Simon of Chicago; a brother, James Riddensdale of Coventry; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Norman Riddensdale and Louise McKay, and grandfather of the late Emily L. Campopiano. Thomas H. Davis, 76, of Winter Avenue, a retired postal worker, died September 24, 2000, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Providence. He was the husband of Ann M. (Sciamacco) Davis. Born in Providence, a son of the late Walter H. and Eva E. (Malone) Davis, he was a Warwick resident since 1961. Mr. Davis was a mail handler at the Turnkey branch of the post office for 20 years, retiring in 1982. He later was employed as a security guard at Ann & Hope for five years. He was a World War II Navy veteran, and received a Purple Heart and five Battle Stars. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Linda M. Stefanidakis of Newburyport, Mass.; a son, John T. Davis, and two sisters, Eileen Martin and Mildred Lanni, all of Warwick; and four grandchildren, Michael Ashton, Kelley O'Connell, Tori Beth and Rachel Davis; and a great-granddaughter, Amelia Ashton. He was a brother of the late Allan, Walter and Raymond Davis, Anna Smith, Mina Peccararo and Eva Butler. Gabriel Ornazian, 69, of Narragansett Parkway and Davenport, Fla., a former engineer, died September 20, 2000, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, N.J. He was the husband of Marie (Nezamian) Ornazian. Born in Providence, the son of the late Krikor and Varvar (Kushigian) Ornazian, he lived most of his life in Cranston and Warwick, wintering in Florida. Upon graduation from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, with a degree in architectural construction, he worked at Hart Engineering, East Providence, on major industrial piping and design projects in the area until he retired. An Army veteran, he was commander and chaplain of VFW Post 6931, Davenport. He was a member of Govdoon Youth of America, and the Armenian Community Chorus of Rhode Island. He enjoyed gardening, drafting and building projects. He was a competitive golfer and bowler, and an active member of the Polo Park Association, Davenport. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Marena Boyadjian of Warwick, Lillian Esther Eterian of Windham, N.J., and Lisa Ornazian of North Brunswick NJ.; and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late John, Vahan and Toros Ornazian. The funeral and burial were private. Andrew E. Dansereau Sr., 79, of Gulfport, Fla., a retired salesman, died September 20, 2000, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Mildred A. (Stafford) Dansereau. Born in Cumberland, he was a son of the late Freemont and Bertha (Turcotte) Dansereau. He was a salesman for Axelrod Music, Providence, for 33 years, retiring in 1974. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Dansereau served as a combat engineer in Europe and received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member of American Legion Post 125 in Gulfport. A baseball enthusiast, he played for the Boomerangs in Gulfport. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Andrew E. Dansereau Jr. of Warwick; a daughter, Sandra A. Branch of Harmony; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Doris Pepin, Roland, Francis and Victor Dansereau, and Alice Prosser. Edward J. Hoyle, 71, of Park Avenue, a retired truck driver, died September 21, 2000, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Betty F. (Winterowd) Hoyle. Born in Providence, a son of the late Edward M. and Elizabeth V. (Gallagher) Hoyle, he lived in Warwick since 1963. Mr. Hoyle was a truck driver with Teamsters Local 251 for 35 years, retiring from Smith Transfer, Seekonk, in 1988 after 10 years. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of William Shields American Legion Post 43. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Donald F., Edward J. and Joseph M. Hoyle, all of Warwick; three daughters, Brenda K. Heroux and Lorraine Laprise, both of Johnston, and Cynthia D. Poole of Thomasville, Ga.; a brother, Michael M. Hoyle of Coventry; a sister, Theresa Evans of West Warwick; and nine grandchildren. Flynn Sr. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Vincent R. Deignan Sr. and the late Anna T. (Cooper) Deignan, she lived in Warwick for 35 years. Grace M. Tarring, 82, of Church Avenue, a retired math teacher, died September 22, 2000, at home. She was the wife of George Tarring III. They were married for 57 years. A life-long Warwick resident, she was a daughter of the late Joseph T. and Grace (Phelan) Safstrom. She had maintained homes in South Kingstown and St. Petersburg, Fla., for many years. Mrs. Tarring was a math teacher in the Warwick school system for 25 years, retiring in 1979. She had taught at the former Aldrich High School and Warwick Veterans Memorial High School. A member of Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian, she had served as a Sunday school teacher and an elder, and had been active in the church women's group. She was a member of the Asbury Coasters and the Trail Dusters camping group. She was a 1941 graduate of Rhode Island College and a 1940 graduate of the University of Rhode Island. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, George A. Tarring of Warwick and Alan W. Tarring of Rochester, N.H.; a brother, Robert C. Safstrom of Foster; and five grandchildren. Maria (Menna) Piccirilli, 88, of New Bern, North Carolina, and formerly of Brendard Avenue, Warwick, died January 6, 2006, at the Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern, NC. She was the wife of the late Sorzio Piccirilli. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Benedetto and Genvira (Menna) Menna, she lived in Warwick for 52 years before moving to North Carolina in June 2003. She is survived by a son, Dennis J. Piccirilli, and his wife, Gail, of Emerald Isle, North Carolina; a brother, Val Menna of Warwick; and two grandsons, Matthew Piccirilli of Wilmington, NC, and Robert Piccirilli of Morehead City, NC. She was the sister of the late Pasco Menna, Elvira Pacheco and Bennie Menna. Her funeral will be held Jan. 14 at 9 a.m. from the Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Thomas J. Bennett, 79, formerly of Warwick, a retired textile machinist, died July 27, 2000, at Four Seasons Care Center, Sedalia, Mo. He was the husband of the late M. Caroline (Fagan) Bennett. Born in Bristol, a son of the late Eli and Clarissa (Harley) Bennett, he resided in Warwick most of his life. He was a member of the Apponaug Old Timers Group, and a former communicant of St. Clement Church, Warwick. He was a self-employed textile machinist until his retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He leaves two sons, William T. Bennett of New Bedford and Gary S. Bennett of Sedalia; a daughter, Patricia C. Penny Salyer of Higginsville, Mo.; a brother, Joseph Bennett of Warwick; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was the father-in-law of Carol Ann Benentt. He was the father of the late James R. Bennett. The funeral was held from Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Ave., with a committal service in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Angelina Moretti, 89, of Warwick Avenue, a retired press operator, died August 9, 2003, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Antonio Moretti. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Joseph and Diletta (Cocoza) Raviele, she moved to Cranston in 1948 and to Warwick in 1984. Mrs. Moretti had worked as a press operator for Optical Findings, Providence, for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of Meadowbrook Social Club. She leaves a son, Anthony J. Moretti of Narragansett; a daughter, Ann V. Orcutt of Warwick; a brother, Thomas Adam Raviele of West Warwick; three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter. She was the sister of the late Ida Campopiano and Andrea, Caesar and Mack Raviele. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Kevin Church, Sandy Lane. Burial was in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
William V. Feeney Jr. - 8/2/2003
William V. Feeney Jr., 63, of Jasmine Trace Drive, Kissimmee, FL, formerly of Warwick, a retired Navy chief petty officer 1st class and later a hospital service coordinator, died August 2, 2003, at Florida Hospital South, Orlando, FL. He was the husband of Barbara (Ricci) Feeney. Born in Providence, he was a son of Anna (Caduto) Feeney of Cranston and the late William V. Feeney Sr. Mr. Feeney had been a hospital service coordinator for the former Veterans Administration Medical Center, now the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Providence, from 1984 to 1994. A Navy veteran, he had served from 1956 to 1976, when he retired as a chief petty officer 1st class. He had been a helicopter mechanic with Attack Squadron 172 and had trained with the SEALs in combat rescue. He received several medals. Mr. Feeney was a member and a past state and chapter commander of the Disabled American Veterans. Besides his wife and his mother he leaves three sons, William V. Feeney III and Brian Feeney, both of Warwick, and Darren Feeney of Kissimmee; a brother, Thomas Feeney of Cranston; and three grandchildren. The funeral was held from the Nardolillo Funeral Home, 1278 Park Ave., Cranston, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Ann Church, Cranston Street, Cranston. Raymond E. Tillinghast, 85, of Washington Street, a retired machine operator, died August 3, 2003, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. Born in Providence, a son of the late Walter E. and Mary (Mutch) Tillinghast, he had lived in Warwick most of his life. Mr. Tillinghast had been a machine operator for Pilgrim Screw Co., Pawtucket, until retiring 30 years ago and previously had been employed by American Screw Co., in Willimantic, Conn. He leaves a sister, Claire G. Hollis of Warwick; and a niece, Joyce A. Kennedy of Coventry. He was the brother of the late Walter F. Tillinghast. The funeral was held from the Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Peter Church, 350 Fair St. Burial was in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Nancie L. Hunter, 44, of Lane 1, Gaspee Point, a registered nurse, died August 3, 2003, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, of injuries from a fire earlier that day at her home. Born in Warwick, a daughter of Donald H. Hunter and Dorothy J. (Clark) Hunter, both of Warwick, she had lived in Texas and Colorado before returning to Warwick seven years ago. She was a graduate of Pilgrim High School and the School of Nursing at the Community College of Rhode Island. Ms. Hunter had been working as a registered nurse at Cedar Crest Nursing Centre, Cranston, for seven years. She previously had worked at the Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, and the Humana Mountain View Hospital, in Thornton, Colorado. Besides her parents she leaves three sons, Tyler, Ryan and Christopher Callanan, all of Lafayette, CO; a brother, Clark L. Hunter of North Kingstown; and her stepmother, Joyce Hunter of Warwick. A requiem Eucharist was celebrated in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 114 George St., Providence. Burial was private. Carolyn J. "De" Spellman - 8/2/2003
Carolyn J. De Spellman, 43, of Asylum Road, died August 3, 2003, in Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence. Born in Providence, a daughter of Jeannette (Howard) Bourage of Cranston and the late Richard Wedell, she had lived in Cranston before moving to Warwick five years ago. Besides her mother she leaves three daughters, Michelle L. and Melissa J. Spellman and Josette B. Lawson, all of Warwick; a brother, Charles Bourage of Providence; three sisters, Joanne St. Lawrence, Carla Sullivan and Sandra Williams, all of Cranston; and two grandchildren. The funeral service and burial were private.
