Richard L. Petrone Sr., 69, of Bellevue Avenue, a retired purchasing director, died November 26, 2002, at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center of Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island, Providence. He was the former husband of Helene V. (Dufresne) Petrone of Warwick. Born in Providence, a son of the late Frank B. Sr. and Marquerite (Trainor) Petrone, he had lived in Warwick for 38 years. Mr. Petrone had worked for Almacs supermarkets for 30 years before retiring as a purchasing director in 1989. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, having served as a staff sergeant, he was awarded several medals. He had attended Cranston High School East and had earned his GED while he was in the service. Besides his former wife, he leaves two sons, Richard L. Petrone Jr. of North Kingstown and James P. Petrone of Warwick; two daughters, Laura H. Testa and Melissa A. Frost, both of Warwick; two brothers, Frank B. Petrone Jr. and Robert Petrone, both in Florida; a sister, Marguerite Gambuto of Cranston; six grandchildren; five nieces; and four nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Benedict Church, Beach Avenue. Burial with military honors was in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
Catherine G. (Eyberse) Lennon-Scovel - 11/18/2002
Catherine G. (Eyberse) Lennon-Scovel, 86, formerly of West Bay Manor, died November 18, 2002, in St. Elizabeth Home, East Greenwich. She was the wife of the late John K. Lennon and the late Leonard E. Scovel. Born in Manchester by the Sea, Mass., the daughter of the late Martyn and Anna (Dulmer) Eyberse, she had lived in Boston and Belen, NM, before moving to Rhode Island four years ago. Mrs. Lennon-Scovel was active in the Belen Chamber of Commerce and the Belen Chapter of Rotary International. She was an accomplished organist and played at Our Lady of Belen Church. While residing in Belen, she was a member of the Desert Stars band, which played at local nursing homes. While living in the Boston area, she was active in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and the St. Theresa of Avila CYO Band in West Roxbury. She leaves three daughters, Joan Gilles of Tacoma, Wash., Nancy Barry of Springfield, Mass., and Catherine Leach of North Kingstown; a son, John M. Lennon of Agawam, Mass.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral was private. A memorial mass was celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Agawam, Mass.

Alice T. Rouse, of Benedict Road, died November 20, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Rouse. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late John M. and Alice L. (Kane) Bowey, she had lived in Warwick most of her life. She leaves a daughter, Sharon L. Vickers of Providence; two sons, Robert L. Rouse of Tampa, Fla., and Edward J. Rouse of Warwick; a sister, Mary E. Daly of Charlestown; a brother, Bernard J. Bowey of Warwick; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Louis George Laplante, 77, of Shamrock Drive, a career serviceman, died November 19, 2002, at home. He was the husband of the late Clare R. (O Connell) Laplante. Born in Providence, a son of the late Maglorie and Rose (Lefebvre) Laplante, he had lived in Warwick since 1957. Mr. Laplante was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the National Guard in 1985 as a chief warrant officer. He was a founding member and past president of RIACT (Rhode Island Association of Civil Technicians). He leaves a son, Alan G. Laplante of Maple Shade, NJ; a daughter, Dianne C. Swanson of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Raymond Laplante of Providence; a sister, Annette Golios of New Harbor, Maine; and five grandchildren. The funeral was private.
John P. "Pat" White - 11/20/2002
John P. Pat White, 89, of Post Road, a retired U.S. Postal Service clerk, died November 20, 2002, at home. He was the husband of the late Louise C. (Higham) White. Born in Providence, a son of the late Patrick and Mary Gannon) White, he had lived in Warwick for 50 years. Mr. White had been a clerk at the Providence Turnkey post office for 29 years before retiring in 1977. He was an Army veteran of World War II and had participated in the Normandy invasion. He had attended the Rhode Island School of Design and was a talented sketch artist. He enjoyed reading. He leaves a brother, James White of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Mildred Vilandrie of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Frank W., Thomas and Joseph White and Helen Thom. The funeral was held from Peter J. Ernest H. Gardiner, 79, of Sargent Street, a retired fuel-oil dealer and heating contractor, died November 22, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Claire M. (Short) Gardiner. They had been married for 51 years. Born in Warwick, a son of the late Wilfred J. and Emma E. (Glahn) Gardiner, he was a lifelong Warwick resident. Mr. Gardiner had been co-owner of the former W.J. Gardiner & Sons Inc. for 42 years before retiring in 1988. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a former Booy Scout and Cub Scout leader. He enjoyed boating and fishing. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, David J. Gardiner of Swampscott, Mass., and Daniel M. and Thomas A. Gardiner, both of Warwick; a daughter, Maribeth Gardiner Gillard of Warwick; a sister, Marie Fisette of Houston; and 10 grandchildren. He was the father of the late William E. Philip J. Dinger Jenkins, 85, of Elmwood Terrace, Elmwood Avenue, a retired truck driver, died November 21, 2002, in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Providence. He was the husband of the late Ann M. (Wildes) Jenkins. Born in Boston, a son of the late David C. and Mary F. (Rowan) Jenkins, he had lived in Hull, Mass., most of his life before moving to Warwick in 1997. Mr. Jenkins had been a truck driver for the Cambridge (Mass.) Public Works Department for 20 years, retiring in 1982. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant and an airplane gunner in Asia and the Pacific for 52 missions. He received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the VFW in Hull and a communicant of St. William Church. He leaves a son, Dennis J. Jenkins of Warwick; a daughter, Ann Schofield of Northport, Fla.; a sister, Mildred E. Miceli-Kneeland of Dennisport, Mass.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late David J. Jenkins and the brother of the late David C. Jenkins, Helen M. McDonald, Catherine F. Dalrymple, Mary L. Sweenie and Marion W. Henry. Mackey E. Carnahan, 59, of Wharf Road, a retired Warwick police lieutenant, died November 21, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital after an illness. Born in Dover, Ohio, a son of Lois (Geottge) Carnahan of Dover and the late Neil Carnahan, he had been a Warwick resident since 1966. Mr. Carnahan had been a member of the Warwick Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1989 as a lieutenant. He was a member of FOP Lodge 7, where he had served as president for four years, and had also been Rhode Island State Lodge secretary and vice president. Mr. Carnahan was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the National Rifle Association. Besides his mother, he leaves two daughters, Kelley J. Radtke of West Warwick and Jennifer J. Carnahan of Warwick; three brothers, Alan Carnahan of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Greg Carnahan of Uhrichsville, Ohio, and Rick Carnahan of Bolivar, Ohio; and his former wife, Linda (Rubino) Carnahan of Warwick. George Joe Vincent, 70, of Brandenton, Fla., formerly of Warwick, a retired self-employed painter, died November 15, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Rexine (Hunter) Vincent. Born in Providence, a son of the late Harold and Anne (Leonard) Vincent, he had lived in Warwick for many years before moving to California in 1968 and to Florida 20 years ago. Mr. Vincent had been a painter until his retirement in 1997. Previously, he had worked for the E.F. O'Donnell & Sons Co., Providence, for 20 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Joseph Vincent of Ocala, Fla., and Donald Vincent of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Harold L. Vincent. Mrs. Ferreira had been a bookkeeper at the former Shaset's Auto Parts, Providence, for many years before retiring in 1979. She leaves four grandchildren, Kristen A. Berthelette and Kelly L. Bernard Skip Collins, 68, of Brentwood Avenue, a retired traffic officer and Cranston police officer, died November 24, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Evelyn M. (Murphy) Collins. Born in Providence, a son of the late Bernard and Dorothy (Wood) Collins, he had lived in Cranston for 20 years before moving to Warwick in 1989. Mr. Collins had worked as a traffic officer for the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, for 12 years, retiring in 1996. He had previously been a police officer in the Cranston Police Department. He was honored by URI officials and the Massachusetts Association of College and University Public Safety Directors when he prevented an unoccupied pickup truck from hitting two pedestrians on the URI campus. While a Cranston officer, he received recognition for catching a burglar and arsonist at the former Narragansett Roofing Co., Drowne Street, Cranston. He was a Navy and Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was also a member of Rhode Island Army National Guard. He was a graduate of Johnson & Wales University, Class of 1976, and attended Bryant College. He was a communicant of St. Matthew Church, Cranston. He enjoyed fishing. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Bernard and Matthew A. Collins, and a daughter, Christine S. Bastien, all of Warwick; two sisters, Jeanne M. Gecawich of Warwick and Dorothy D. Zullo of Attleboro; a brother, Kenneth L. Collins of Warwick; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Paul F. and Barbara A. Collins. (McGuirl) Champagne. Born in Cranston, a son of the late Henri J. and Pamela A. (Desrosiers) Champagne, he had lived in Warwick since 1952. Mr. Champagne was an electrician at Spiedel in Providence for 20 years, retiring in 1981. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Champagne was a communicant of St. William Church, a former parish trustee, and a past president of the parish council. He was a charter member and past grand knight of John F. Kennedy Council, Knights of Columbus, and a past district deputy of the Rhode Island State Council Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the Rhode Island State Council's charity committee and the Father Wallace Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Mr. Champagne was a founder and former board member of the Warwick Shelter Inc., now the Rhode Island Family Shelter. He was a recipient of the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award for Volunteers and a former Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. He leaves four daughters, Ann M. Casey of North Kingstown, Donna C. Richardson of Norwell, Mass., and Mary Lou Feuti and Pamela C. Sayles, both of Warwick; four sons, John H. Champagne of Helen, Ga., Robert A. Champagne of Warwick, Lawrence P. Raymond T. Zompa, 53, of Salt Lake City, Utah, formerly of Village Circle, died May 26, 2002, at Care Source in Salt Lake City. Born in Providence, a son of Thelma (DeFusco) Zompa of Warwick and the late Vincent Zompa, he moved to Utah nine years ago. Besides his mother, he leaves a daughter, Lauren Macleod in Virginia; two brothers, James Zompa of Las Vegas, Nev., and Robert Zompa of Amesbury, Mass.; and a sister, Gina Zompa of Warwick. Lillian Boynton Hale - 5/27/02
Lillian Boynton Hale, 96, of River Rd., Newcastle, Maine a retired teacher and one of the founders of Rocky Hill School, died May 27, 2002, in Harborside Healthcare-Westwood, Keene, N.H. She was the wife of the late Nathan Hale. They had been married for 66 years. Born in Jefferson, Maine, on Aug. 12, 1905, she was a daughter of the late Eli and Mabel (Little) Boynton. She had been a resident of New York City, London and Paris before she moved to Rhode Island in 1939. She was a former resident of East Greenwich. Mrs. Hale graduated from Lincoln Academy as class valedictorian in 1923. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston in 1928 and upon graduation took a job teaching at the school. The Hales helped to establish the Rocky Hill Country Day School and Summer Camp on Division Street, East Greenwich. Mr. Hale served as headmaster; Mrs. Hale was the treasurer. In 1949, the school was relocated to its present site on Ives Road in Warwick. The Hales retired to Newcastle in 1962. Mrs. Hale's paintings have been displayed in the New York City Watercolor Club, the Salon d Automne of Paris and numerous art shows throughout Rhode Island and Maine. She also gave art classes. Mrs. Hale was a member of the Newcastle-Damariscotta Women's Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She leaves two sons, Christopher R. Hale of Hinsdale, N.H., and Nathan Hale of New York City; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Alice B. Sturtevant. Burial was in the Glidden Cemetery, Newcastle.

Frank L. Keller, 75, of Patricia Court, a retired meat cutter, died May 27, 2002, at Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol. He was the husband of Adeline (Greaves) Keller. Born in Allentown, Pa., a son of the late Lucas and Julia (Sitzwohl) Keller, he had been a Warwick resident since 1953. Mr. Keller worked for Stop & Shop as a meat cutter for 26 years before retiring in 1984 due to illness. He was a World War II Navy veteran and also served in the Navy Reserves. Mr. Keller was a shellfisherman since 1953. He was a member of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 1328, AFL-CIO. He was a former member of the Fleet Reserves Association 42. Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Becky Rinaldo and Brenda DeFelice, both of Cranston, Anna Dale of Warwick and Heidi Keller of Foster; a son, John Keller of Warwick; a brother, Luke Keller of Warwick; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was a brother of the late John Keller. Janet E. Kishfy, 53, of Pinehurst Avenue, a medical assistant, died May 25, 2002, at home after an illness. She was the wife of Fred P. Kishfy. Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Albert Hunt and Irene G. (Messier) Allan, she had lived in Pawtucket and Central Falls before settling in Warwick in 1978. She was a 1989 graduate of the Sawyer School. Mrs. Kishfy had worked as a medical assistant with Anchor Medical Associates in Warwick, for the past 12 years. Besides her husband, she leaves four daughters, Roxanne Hallock of Mystic, Conn., and Rhonda L. Krikorian, Robin I. Brindle and Holly Kishfy, all of Warwick; a son, Fredy Kishfy of Warwick; three sisters, Gertrude Scott of Attleboro, Mass., Mildred Harshman of Murrieta, Calif., and Martha Alan-Malouin of Woonsocket; a brother, Ronnie Allan of Port Richie, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Richard W. Salzillo, 46, of Fisher Avenue, a pipefitter, died May 25, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital, of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident earlier that day on the Post Road extension. He was the husband of Pamela A. (Mallette) Salzillo. Born in Providence, a son of C. Richard and Carol N. (Contillo) Salzillo of Warwick, he was a lifelong Warwick resident. Mr. Salzillo been a pipefitter for the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, at Quonset Point, in Davisville, North Kingstown, for the past 16 years. Besides his wife and his parents, he leaves three daughters, Adelina M., Dina M. and Carolyn R. Salzillo, all of Warwick. He was the godfather of Jaime L. Furtado. He was the brother of the late Carl Salzillo. Pasquale E. "Pat" Melaragno - 5/24/02
Pasquale E. Pat Melaragno, 71, of Alfalfa Dr., North Scituate, died May 24, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Joan N. (Clarke) Melaragno, RN. Born in Providence, a son of the late Amico and Josephine (Jannelli) Melaragno, he had been a resident of North Scituate for 11 years, formerly residing in Providence. Mr. Melaragno had served with the Providence Police Department for 20 years, retiring as a Sgt. in 1973. He was employed as an assistant professor, rangemaster and coach of the Pistol Marksmanship Team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 20 years until 1996. While at MIT Mr. Melaragno started the Womens Collegiate Airpistol Team. The Melaragno trophy was named in his honor for the Womens National Collegiate Airpistol Champion. A Korean War Army veteran, he served in Okinawa. He had served with the Army Reserve in the Criminal Investigation Division, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer 4 in 1990. He was a member of the All Army Pistol Team competing in National and International competition. He competed in the Pan-American Games in 1972, medaling four times. He was awarded the Presidents 100 representing the top 100 pistol shooters in the U.S. He was a member of the Providence Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3, a life member of the NRA, the Providence Revolver Club, the Rhode Island State Rifle and Revolver Association and the Angle Tree Stone Rod and Gun Club of Attleboro, MA. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Steven M. Melaragno, Lt. Providence PD, of Greenville, Paul C. Melaragno of Cumberland and Robert A. Melaragno, Det. Providence PD of Providence; a daughter, Susan M. Chabot M.D., of Walpole, MA; and 10 grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Helen P. Melaragno. Born in Negaunee, Mich., a son of the late Jacob and Fannie (Roysko) Hannuksela, he had lived in Warwick since 1964. Mr. Hannuksela had worked as an auto body repairman at Boston Radiator, Providence, for 39 years before retiring in 1976. He was a former league bowler with the Adley Trucking Co. team. He leaves a son, Vaino A Hannuksela of Jamestown; a daughter, Joan L. Jordan of Warwick; a brother, Arthur Hannuksela of Wethersfield, Conn.; a sister, Martha Stoner of Hope Valley, Hopkinton; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was held in the Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. Rita (Byers) Duff, 82, of Hillard Avenue, died May 23, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Kenneth W. Duff, to whom she had been married for 57 years. Born in Boston, a daughter of the late Arthur H. and Margaret (McNulty) Byers, she had been a resident of Warwick since 1961. She was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a pharmacist mate. She was a life member of the National Disabled American Veterans and the Women in Military Service World War II Memorial Group. Mrs. Duff was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, James K. Duff of Narragansett and Robert W. Duff of Chandler, Ariz.; a brother, James T. Byers of Abington, Mass.; four sisters, Ruth McDaniel of Arnold, Calif., Lois Bouranis of Hamilton, Mass., Merle Dunn of Hebert, N.C., and Jean McDonald of Albany, Ill.; three grandchildren and a great-grandson. She was a sister of the late Arthur C. Byers. The funeral was held from Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 3250 Post Rd.
