Marie Margaret (O'Handley) Fitzsimmons
Marie Margaret (O'Handley) Fitzsimmons, 87, of Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died Monday, Dec 18, 2000 at the Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.
She was the wife of the late John E. Fitzsimmons, who died in 1967, and wife of the late Francis X. Hennessey, who died in 1957.
Born in Boston, MA, on Nov 29, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Ned and Katherine O'Handley.
Mrs. Fitzsimmons had worked as a nurse's aide at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River, MA, from 1951 - 1957. She was a supervisor from 1958 - 1978, and a worker for the food service department at the Newport Naval Hospital. Mrs. Fitzsimmons was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Portsmouth and also a member of the Portsmouth Senior Citizens Center. She was an avid reader and was also known for her fabulous New England cooking.
She is survived by two sons: Albert T. Hennessey of Pocassett, MA and John E. Fitzsimmons of Falmouth, ME, three daughters: Katherine Radosevich of Portsmouth, RI, Elaine Ellis of North Kingston, RI, and Mariah Fitzsimmons'Mello of Somerset, MA, 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Francis Hennessey, James Hennessey, Joseph Hennessey and Helen Johnson. She was the sister of the late Patrick O'Handley, Robert O'Handley, Rita O'Handley and Margaret Glen.

Lt. Joseph R. Medeiros
Newport Police Dept., Ret.
Joseph R. Mediros, 76, of Newport, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Catherine (Sologiozy) Medeiros, to whom he had been married for 53 years. Born in Portsmouth, RI on July 3, 1924, he was the son of the late Frank Medeiros'Salvador and Clara (Rose) Medeiros'Salvador.
Mr. Medeiros joined the police department in July of 1951, and worked as a police officer for the City of Newport for 35 years, retiring in 1986 as Lieutenant. In 1968, Mr. Medeiros was appointed sergeant, and in 1973 attained the rank of lieutenant. During his career he had been in charge of the juvenile department, and had served in the Internal Affairs Office and the Detective Division. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII, in the Pacific Theatre. A Veteran of the Police Relief Association, he received his degree in criminology from Salve Regina College. He also attended FBI School and Babson College to study law enforcement.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Collier of Baltimore, MD, one son, F. Steven Medeiros of Saudi Arabia, one brother, William Medeiros in Bristol, RI, one sister, Madeline Andrea of Portsmouth, RI and 4 granddaughters: Melissa, Erica, Allison and Katherine.

Anna (Gibau) Marshall
Anna (Gibau) Marshall, 86, of the John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown, RI, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, Dec 20, 2000 at John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late Arthur S. Marshall and the late Joseph David Furtado. Born in Newport, RI on Jul 17, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Marcelino and Palmiria (Corciero) Gibau.
Mrs. Marshall was a life member of ILGWU - International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and had worked as a seamstress for various mills in the Fall River, MA area. She was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Manuel Gibau, Antone Gibau, Joseph Gibau, Frank Gibau and Mary Gibau.

Joseph James Figueiredo
Joseph James Figueiredo, 70, of Newport, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Georgianna (Congdon) Figueiredo. Born in Newport, RI on Dec. 2, 1930, he was the son of the late Antonio and Mary (Silvia) Figueiredo.
Mr. Figueiredo worked as a gardener for John Nicholas Brown at Harbor Court in Newport from 1949 - 1979. He then worked for the City of Newport Public Works Department from 1979 - 1995. He was a communicant of Jesus Savior Church in Newport. Mr. Figueiredo had served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by one brother, Antonio Figueiredo of Middletown, RI, three sisters: Mary Ridle of Gloucester, VA, Helen L. Peckham and Flora C. Soares both of Middletown, RI, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother John Figueiredo and four sisters: Beatrice Rochefort, Rose Hunter, Nellie Ford, and Vina Phillips.

Edward Joseph Boucher
Edward Joseph Boucher, 83, of Portsmouth, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Hazel A. (Marshall) Boucher. Born in Springfield, MA, on Mar 21, 1917, he was the son of the late Eugene N. and Olivia (Deslauriers) Boucher.
Mr. Boucher had worked as the supervisor in the small parts department for Smith and Wesson of Springfield, MA for 25 years. He had served in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Adams in Newport, RI. Mr. and Mrs. Boucher had moved to the Portsmouth area 10 years ago, previously living in Chelsea, VT, for 20 years. In November, Mr. and Mrs. Boucher had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Portsmouth Multi Purpose Senior Center, and avid fisherman and gardener.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son Edward G. Boucher of Export, PA, one daughter Annette C. Farina of Enfield, CT, one sister Jeanette Rivers of Springfield, MA, 8 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.
Charles Franklin Pierce
Charles Franklin Pierce, 76, of Portsmouth, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Shirley (Leach) Pierce. Born in Fall River, MA on Aug. 28, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Margaret (Fitzgerald) Pierce.
Mr. Pierce had worked as a supervisor at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station in the overhaul and repair facility, retiring in 1973. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII in the European Theatre. Mr. Pierce had been the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. Mr. Pierce was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Portsmouth Knights of Columbus Christopher Rooney Council and a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus General Rosecrans Assembly. Mr. Pierce had served on the Portsmouth Board of Canvassers and as an umpire for the Lawn Tennis Association. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed sailing and skiing.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Michael J. Pierce of Tenino, WA, Christopher C. Pierce of Newport, RI, and Peter E. Pierce of Portsmouth, RI, two daughters: Marcia J. Stone of Portsmouth, RI, and Priscilla E. Jolie of Portsmouth, RI, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. He was the brother of the late Gerald T. Lawton.

Norman Gilbert Card
Norman Gilbert Card, 74, of Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Barbara June (Orkins) Card. Born in North Kingstown, RI on Mar. 15, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles Albert and Marjorie (Greene) Card.
Mr. Card had worked as a millwright for the Newport Restoration Foundation for 22 years, retiring as the foreman of the carpentry mill department in 1991. He had also done work for Doris Duke at her estate in Newport. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII, in the European Theatre in Frankfort, Germany, retiring as Tech Sergeant. Mr. Card had belonged to the Questors of the First Presbyterian Church of Newport, and was a member of the Parkinson's Support Group at Newport Hospital.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Catherine S. Hey of West Greenwich, RI, a brother, Robert Card of Tiverton, RI and Largo, FL, two sisters, Muriel Spence of Bristol, RI and Largo, Fl, and Phyllis Rafferty of Tiverton, RI, a granddaughter, Sandra Hey of West Greenwich, RI, and a grandson Michael Hey of West Greenwich, RI.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., in the First Presbyterian Church, corner of Broadway and Everett Street, Newport.

Margaret A. Dunn
Margaret A. Dunn, 83, of Newport, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Benjamin Francis Dunn. Born in Newport, RI on Apr. 2, 1917, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Martin) Sasse.
Mrs. Dunn was a graduate of Saint Joseph's School in Newport. She was a parishioner of Saint Mary's Church and also a member of the Senior Citizens Group.
She is survived by two sons: Benjamin Dunn and Joseph Dunn, both of Newport RI, five daughters: Gloria Cardoza of Newport, RI, Patricia LaFlamme of Saybrook, CT, Margaret Fastiggi of Newington, CT, Maureen White of Middletown, RI, and Elizabeth Martina Kinch of Titusville, FL, two sisters: Ruth Sullivan and Jacqueline Majoros, both of Newport, RI, 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her older sister, Elizabeth White.
Her funeral will be held Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at 8:00 a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway, Newport. Followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba's Cemetery, Middletown.

Edward DeAscentis
Edward DeAscentis, 78, of Middletown, RI, formerly of Newport, RI, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Natalie S. (Helgeson) DeAscentis.
Born in Newport, RI on Jan. 31, 1922, he was the son of the late John and the late Juditta (Caputi) DeAscentis. Mr. DeAscentis worked as an accounting and distribution clerk with the Providence Gas Company, Newport Division, for 41 years, retiring in 1987. He had served in the Naval Reserve prior to WWII. Mr. DeAscentis had also served as a safety inspector with the Coast Guard Auxillary.
Mr. DeAscentis formed the first unit of the former Elkhart Air Squadron of Newport and had been a senior lifeguard at King's Beach, Newport. He was a member of Trinity Church, Newport, where he had served on many boards, and participated in many activities, including organizing the Trinity Church record hops in the late 1950s.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald E. DeAscentis and Wayne F. DeAscentis, both of Middletown, RI, five brothers, Arthur DeAscentis of Newport, RI, John DeAscentis of Florida, Ettorino DeAscentis of Middletown, RI, Geno DeAscentis of Newport, RI, and Hugo DeAscentis of Newport, RI, and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Manley DeAscentis and grandfather of the late Christine DeAscentis and Richard DeAscentis.

Stephen F. Olszewski
Stephen F. Olszewski, 85, of Portsmouth, RI, died Saturday, Jan. 6 at Heatherwood Nursing And Subacute Center, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Martha Jane (Thomas) Olszewski.
Born in Newark, NJ on May 31, 1915, he was the son of the late Alexander Olszewski and the late Josephine (Wisniewska) Olszewski.
Mr. Olszewski received his secondary education from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art. He served as an A.V.A. Specialist First Class in the U.S. Navy from May 11, 1943 to Dec. 11, 1945. Mr. Olszewski was also a pharmaceutical advertising executive with Paul Klemter & Company of New York City for 30 years before retiring in 1970.
Mr. Olszewski is also a recognized artist and watercolorist, most recently serving on the board of directors of the Cape Cod Art Association; and a member, supporter and instructor at the Westport Art Group, Westport, MA. Mr. Olszewski exhibited widely throughout his long career, recently at the Providence Art Club and Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery where he presented a retrospective of his life's work.
He is survived by two daughters, Alexandra L. Hakimdin of Portsmouth, RI and Krysia E. Robinson of New Hartford, CT, and three grandchildren.

Dr. Cyril James Allen
Dr. Cyril James Allen, 82, of 464 Third Beach Road died at home on Sunday of leukemia. He was the husband of Sandra (Barton) Allen.
Born on April 10, 1918 in New York City, he was the son of the late Arthur Allen and Margaret (Johnson) Allen. He graduated from Rogers High in 1937 and went on to Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. He received his degree in veterinary medicine in 1944 and initially practiced in Maryland and Massachusetts. He started his practice in Middletown in 1950 and for fifty years provided the essential large animal veterinary services to the island of Aquidneck. Dr. Allen started the first rabies clinic in the state of RI, with all benefits going to the Robert Potter League for animals.
He was a past member of St. Columba's Episcopal Church, where he served as Junior Warden, and was currently a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, serving as eucharistic minister and former Senior Warden. He was very active within the church and participated in all feasts and holidays.
He was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge No. 1, Newport since May of 1984. He was actively involved in Masonry and volunteered and served on numerous committees through the years. He served as Master of the Lodge in 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1996. He also served on its board of directors. In May 1992, he received the Meritorious Service Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Rhode Island under Worshipful Master Robert Yates. He was a fifty-six year life member of the Newport Elks as well as past president of the Middletown Rotary Club. He was also a former member of the Robert Potter League for Animals. Besides his wife Sandra of 32 years, he leaves behind three children. Two of the children are Rhett Allen of Middletown, RI and Margaret Maurano of Mansfield, MA. He also leaves one granddaughter, Leah Bouch.

Volney Clarke
Volney R. Clarke, who has died aged 91, was a machinist at the Torpedo Station on Goat Island for 25 years. For many years, he also sold real estate for Ed McKinney and worked as a salesman for the former W.T. Grant's in Newport.
He built his own sailboat, a 38-foot Double Ender he called Volanna, that appeared in many yachting magazines.
Volney R. Clarke was born in Newport on May 25, 1909. He was the son of the late Thomas Clarke and the late Carrie (Russell) Clarke.
He was the husband of Anna (Kelleyhouse) Clarke. They were married 61 years. They had a son, Volney Clarke Jr., and a daughter, Karen MacKnight.
A resident of Middletown, Mr. Clarke died Jan. 9 at Newport Hospital, Newport.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Calvary United Methodist Church, 200 Turner Road, Middletown. Burial will be private.
Dorothy Freeman
Dorothy Freeman, who has died aged 83, was a switchboard operator at the former Sears and Robuck Company in Middletown. She retired from the company in 1990 with 45 years of service.
Dorothy Freeman was born Dorothy McKale on Feb. 9, 1917 in Bristol, the daughter of the late Thomas William McKale and the late Margaret (Cruz) McKale
A resident of Middletown, Mrs. Freeman died Jan. 9 at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, RI. She was the wife of the late Ernest Freeman.
She is survived by one sister, Roberta V. Ferreira and one brother, Thomas McKale.

Marguerite BoulT
Marguerite Anna BoulT, who has died aged 78, was the wife of the late Frank Frank D.BoulT for 49 years.
Mrs. BoulT graduated from Rogers High School in 1939. She later moved with her family to Cranston where she was a member of St. Matthew's Church. Eventually resettling in Newport in 1998, her journey home took her through Wetherfield Commons in Warwick.
Born in Newport on March 21, 1922, she was the daughter of William H. Smith and Mary (Flaherty) Smith.
A resident of Newport, Mrs. BoulT died Jan. 10 at Village House Newport.
She is survived by four daughters: Suzanne Donner, Dr. Lucille Pascale, Denise BoulT and Michelle Gilman; one brother, William Smith and three sisters: Lucy Simpson, Mary Burkinshaw and Dorothy Sullivan.
Her funeral was held on Jan. 15.
Wanda Casper
Wanda Marie Casper, who has died aged 43, had a long career as a homemaker and volunteered her time with several Multiple Sclerosis Chapters in Minnesota, California and Rhode Island.
She was the wife of Charles E. Casper, Jr.
Born in Minneapolis, Minn. on July 13, 1957, she was the daughter of Edgar Glover and Mary Alice Lyons. She was educated at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, Minn. and at the University of Minnesota, where she majored in biology.
She is survived by two sons, Charles E. Casper III, and Ronald David Casper; a sister, Teika Nicole Harris, three brothers: Ronald James Glover, Gordon Lyons Jr., and Leon Neal Lyons, and a grandmother, Cornelia Covington.
A resident of Middletown, Mrs. Casper died Jan. 10 at home.

Mary Silvia
Mary Silvia, who has died aged 92, was a homemaker, a communicant of Jesus Savior Church and had worked for at the Elms for the Preservation Society of Newport County.
She was the wife of the late Manual F. Silvia.
Mary Goulart was born in Faial, Azores on Jan. 21, 1908. She was the daughter of Joseph I. Goulart and Guilhermina (DaGloria) Goulart.
A resident of Newport, Mrs. Silvia died Jan. 10, 2001 at the Village House Nursing Home in Newport.
She is survived by a son, Manuel F. Silvia, Jr., two daughters, Barbara M. Douglas and Mary Ann Kelly, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Nancy Silvia
Nancy M. Silvia, who has died aged 66, worked as a medical secretary in the office of Dr. Feldman in Newport for 35 years. She retired in 1997.
She was a member of the Evangelical Friends Church, where she was active in assisting with the children's church and nursery.
She was the wife of the late John R. Silvia.
Nancy M. Costello was born on July 5, 1934, in Newport. She was the daughter of the late John and Martha (Lindh) Costello.
A resident of Newport, Mrs. Silvia died Jan. 13, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence.
She is survived by daughter Deborah Burke, daughter Doreen Blank, son Jack Silvia, and son Jim Silvia; one brother, William Costello, three sisters, Anna Merriweather, Joan Bautista, and Pauline Siebens, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two stepchildren, Henry Silvia, and Denise Dubreiul, five step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 17.
Margit Baum
Margit Baum, who has died aged 94, was a jewelry designer for Arbor Jewelers in Providence for 35 years. She worked with her husband, the late Leo F. Baum.
A loyal supporter of the Newport Music Festival, Newport Hospital and other local organizations, Mrs. Baum went to college in Vienna, Austria, and later attended Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
Margit Feher was born on June 24, 1906 in Hungary. She was the daughter of the late Ingatz Feher and the late Melanie (Geiringer) Feher. She grew up in Vienna, Austria.
A resident of Newport, Mrs. Baum died on Jan. 12, at home. She is preceded in death by her two brothers, Manfred Feher and Fritz Feher and a sister, Steffie Aurbach.

Joseph Sniezek
Joseph Peter Sniezek, who has died aged 78, was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during WWII, and receiving the American Theatre Medal and the World War I Victory Medal.
After his discharge from the Navy, he went to work with his father in the family business, the Sugar Bowl on South Main Street and Dwelly Street, in Fall River, Mass. After the death of his father in 1954, Mr. Sniezek took over the family business which he operated until its closing in 1972.
He was a member of the Portsmouth Lions Club, where he served as president, a member of the Polish American War Veterans, and the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Citizens Center. He was also a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. He enjoyed gardening and salt-water fishing.
He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Maitland) Sniezek.
Joseph Peter Sniezek was born on August 10, 1922 in Fall River, Mass. He was the son of the late John P. and Frances (Howance) Sniezek.
A resident of Portsmouth, Mr. Sniezek died Jan. 13, at Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket.
He is survived by one son, Ralph King, three daughters, Karen Brown, Cheryl Loeber, and Holly Sniezek; one brother, George Sniezek and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion Barbara Smith.

Manuel Cunha
Manuel Cunha, Jr., who has died aged 85, was a coppersmith at the former US Naval Torpedo Station in Newport and in Davisville. He had also worked as a diesel mechanic and operator of a Dynamometer.
Mr. Cunha had also worked as a purser for the Jamestown Ferry and as a supervisor at the Newport Bridge Toll Plaza. He was a member of the Jamestown Holy Ghost Society. He was an avid saltwater fisherman and a Striper Club member.
Manuel Cunha was born on Jan. 8, 1916 in Jamestown. He was the son of the late Manuel and Frances (Goulart) Cunha. He was the husband of Helen (Foster) Cunha.
A resident of Jamestown, who also wintered in West Palm Beach, Fla., Mr. Cunha died Jan. 14 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown.
He is survived by one son, Douglas F. Cunha, one daughter, Barbara E. Cunha, and one grandson, Rev. David F. Cunha.

William Quade
William F. Quade, who has died aged 97, owned and operated Airway Diner in Brooklyn, NY for many years after coming over from Germany in 1924. Later he was a cook in various Newport area restaurants.
Born in Germany on May 24, 1903, William F. Quade was the son of the late Augustus Quade.
A Newport resident, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Quade died Jan. 15 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown.
He is survived by his wife Sara S. (Spooner) Quade, one son, William Quade, Jr., two sisters: Martha Fricka and Emily Rohr, two granddaughters, one grandson, two great granddaughters and three great- grandsons.
Funeral and burial services will be private.
Niels "Bud" Nielsen
Niels "Bud" Nielsen, who has died aged 72, was the department manager of Intergrated Manufacturing Systems for Raytheon Company in Portsmouth for 35 years. He retired in 1992.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in World War II during the occupation, and in Korea. He was a member of the Portsmouth Lions Club, where he served as past president, and of the Newport Jaycees, where he also served as past president. He was a member of the Portsmouth Republican Party Committee.
Niels Nielsen was born on July 22, 1928 in Newport. He was the son of the late Peter L. Nielsen and the late Marcella (Nelson) Nielsen.
He was the husband of Eleanor (O'Connell) Nielsen.
A Tiverton resident, Mr. Nielsen died on Jan. 15 at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River, Mass.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor Nielsen, two sons: James M. Nielsen and Paul Nielsen; two daughters: Kathleen W. Ibbotson and Mary N. Henriques; two sisters: Thelma Manuel and Ann Rich; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Eleanor Letiecq
Eleanor Marion Letiecq, who has died aged 90, was an accomplished artist in oil paints and a communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Middletown. She was an avid golfer and member of the Women's League of Wanumetonomy Golf Club.
She was the wife of Norman Chester Letiecq.
Eleanor Marion Paika was born on July 23, 1910 in Worcester, Mass. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Rose (Kaczmarczyk) Paika.
A Middletown resident, Mrs. Letiecq died Jan. 14 at Newport Hospital, Newport.
She is survived by two sons: Ronald T. Letiecq and Gary N. Letiecq, one brother, Joseph Paika, two sisters: Frances Shilling and Julia Sheehan, and six grandchildren.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Rd, Middletown. Burial will follow in the Middletown Cemetary, corner of Turner and Wyatt Rds, Middletown.

Fred Joseph Pine
FRED JOSEPH PINE, who has died aged 83, worked at St. George's School as the head chef for 38 years. He was a life member of the VFW, Middletown; he was a World War II Army Veteran serving in the Pacific Theater & Aleutian Islands. Mr. Pine retired in 1958 with 20 years of service as a Sergeant First Class, where he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan and Korea) and Bronze Star. He was the husband of Evelyn Simas Pine.
Fred Joseph Pine was born on Oct. 9, 1917 in Newport. He was the son of Frank and Mary Pine.
A resident of Tiverton, Mr. Pine died Jan. 18 at Newport Hospital. He is survived by five sons, Fred J. Pine, Jr., Leonard F. Sharp, Robert A. Sharp, Russell J. Sharp and Thomas M. Sharp; one daughter Susan R. Sharp, two brothers Frank Pine and Joseph Pine; seven sisters, Madeline Blanchard, Margaret Deese, Marion Amerson, Elsie Hicks, Rose Sawyer, Hilda Silvia, and Beatrice Paiva.
His funeral was held on Jan. 22. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
John Houlihan
JOHN DENNIS HOULIHAN, who died at age 82, worked as a master electrician for over 30 years as the owner and operator of G&H Electric Company on Broadway in Newport. He was a member of the Master Electricians Local Union, as well as a member of Hazards Beach Club and the Rotary Club. Mr. Houlihan was a World War II Army Veteran who held decorations and citations, including the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was the husband of the late Monica (Sullivan) Houlihan.
John Dennis Houlihan was born on March 26, 1918 in Newport. He was the son of Edward and Mary (Barry) Houlihan.
A resident of Newport, Mr. Houlihan died Jan. 19 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. He is survived by two sons Paul J. Houlihan of East Quogue, Long Isand, NY, Peter J. Houlihan of Newton, MA; three daughters Janice H. Rodarmor and Monica M. Houlihan, and Theresa H. Nunes; one sister, Elizabeth Dennis, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His funeral was held on Jan. 23. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetary in Middletown.
Amy Hallencrutz
AMY ALTHEA HALLENCRUTZ, who died at age 94, was a member of the former Currant Topics Club, and a member of the United Baptist Church in Newport. She was the wife of the late Rolfe Hallencrutz.
Amy Althea Howard was born on Feb. 12, 1906 in New London, CT. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Mattie (DeWolfe) Howard.
A resident of Middletown, Mrs. Hallencrutz died Jan. 19 at the John Clarke Nursing Center in Middletown. She is survived by two daughters, Gretta Crombie and Althea Gordon, six grand children, thirteen great-grandchildren, and six great great-grandchildren.
A private service was held on Jan. 23 in the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. A private burial took place in the family lot in Trinity Cemetary in Portsmouth. A memorial service will be held in the United Baptist Church at a date and time to be announced.

BLANCHE SEMAS, who has died aged 91, was a homemaker. She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church. A native of Fall River, Blanche Semas was born on Sep. 30, 1909 and died Jan. 12 at Countryview Manor Guest Home in Escalon. She is survived by her brothers, Joe, Albino, Manuel Semas, and Antone Semas.
ROBERT ANTHONY KERR, who has died aged 73, was a driver for the former P&D Transportation/Bowler Van Lines of Newport, from 1960 until his retirement in 1989. He was a WWII US Army veteran. Kerr was a member of the Teamsters Local #251 and the Middletown VFW, and was also an avid fisherman. He was the husband of Jean France (James) Kerr.
Kerr was born on September 29, 1927 in Newport. He died Jan. 22 at Newport Hospital. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Robert A. Kerr, Jr.; three daughters, Debra Sanderlin, Patricia Wells and Cynthia Hooper; one brother, Kenneth Kerr, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
RICHARD CARL DUNN, who has died aged 53, was a taxi driver with Cozy Cab, Inc. A member of Saint Paul's Methodist Church, he married Barbara (Wittstruck) Dunn.
Dunn was born on March 27, 1947 in Newport. He died Jan. 25 at Newport Hospital.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three step-daughters, Sherry Dupree, Deborah White and Tammy White; one brother, Donald Dunn; one sister, Ruth Rumfield; and eight grandchildren.
DAVID T. TURPIN, who has died aged 38, was a mechanical engineer at the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in Newport from 1985 until his illness in Dec. 2000. He received his BA and MA from the University of Louisville in KY.
Turpin was an accomplished bagpiper, belonging to the American Federation of Musicians Local #529, Newport. He was also a member of the Eastern US Pipe Band Assocition New England Affiliation, Providence Federation of Musicians Local #198-457. He taught piping locally.
A member of the National Association of Sports Officials, Turpen was a referee and officiated for interscholastic sports locally in basketball, soccer and softball; he officiated for Our Lady of Mount Carmel CYO Basketball, Bristol, during the 1980's.
David T. Turpin was born on Nov. 9, 1962. He died Jan. 22 at Newport Hospital.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Katherine "Katie" Turpin.

Paul Del Nero (1925-2001)
PAUL J. DEL NERO, who died age 76, was the youngest person appointed judge in Rhode Island state history and served as district court judge until his retirement in 1988.
Graduating with honors from De La Salle Academy in 1942, Del Nero entered the US Army during World War II. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for his invaluable service as personal security to J. Robert Oppenheimer, head of the Atomic Bomb Research Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He later graduated from Rhode Island State College and received his law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1952. He also attended the National Judicial College in Nevada and the American Academy of Judicial Education in Charlottesville, VA.
Judge Del Nero was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar Association in 1953. Five years later, he was appointed district Court Judge by Governor Dennis J. Roberts. Following his retirement, he remained active as judge in Newport County.
Del Nero was active in many fraternal and civic organizations. He was a member of the Newport Planning Board where he served as Vice Chairman for 15 years. He was chairman of the Newport Legal Aid committee for five years. While at Rhode Island State College, he became a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was a member of the Rhode Island State Bar Association and of the Newport Bar Association. He was also a member of the Newport Knights of Columbus, the Newport Lion's Club, the Newport Elks Club, and was past president of the Italian Forum. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. Judge Del Nero was the husband of Marcella (Finn) Del Nero, with whom he enjoyed travelling on numerous trips abroad. As a sports enthusiast, he had a particular fondness for the Boston Celtics.
Paul Del Nero was born on Jan. 6, 1925. He was the son of the late Joseph V. and Mary (Donnely) Del Nero.
A resident of Newport, Mr. Del Nero died at Newport Hospital on Feb. 2.
Aside from his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Tracy L. Rasher of Falmouth, Maine, and Moira D. Stratford of Middletown, and one grandchild.

Robert Beaucage
ROBERT ALFRED BEAUCAGE, who died age 77, worked in the Quality Evaluation Lab at the Springfield Armory while living in Springfield, MA. In 1967, he moved to Newport and worked as a mechanical engineer for the Standards Lab at NUSC on the US Naval Base, Newport, for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps, serving during World War II in the European Theatre. Mr. Beaucage was a communicant and usher at St. Anthony's Church in Portsmouth. He attended the University of Maine and the former Bliss Business College. He was a member of the VFW post #5390 of Portsmouth, where he served as secretary and the NARFE Chapter 869 where he served as treasurer from 1992 - 2000. He was an avid golver and enjoyed golfing with his wife, Madeline (Goding) Beaucage. He also enjoyed mineralology, polishing and collecting minerals.
Robert Beaucage was born on June 2, 1923. He was the son of the late Alfred J. and Elizabeth (Flynn) Beaucage.
A resident of Portsmouth, Mr. Beaucage died at Newport Hospital on Feb. 5.
He is survived by his son, Prof. W. Greg Beaucage of Cincinnatti, OH, one daughter, Cheryl Bushey of Weymouth, Mass., two brothers, Gerald and William Beaucage, two sisters, Jaqualine Cronin and Sister Doris Beaucage (Sister Angela of the Carmelite Order), and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Feb. 8, at 9:00 a.m., from the Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church. Burial will follow in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.

LIBERATA (NAVARROLI) SANDONATO, who has died aged 94, was the wife of the late Antonio Sandonato.
Liberata Sandonato was born on October 27, 1906 in Prezza, Italy. She was the daughter of the late Gennaro and Maria (Stella) Navarroli.
A resident of Middletown, Mrs. Sandonato died at home on Jan. 30.
She is survived by her son, Joseph Sandonato of Middletown, grandson Anthony Sandonato of Argentina, granddaughter Marie Crandall of Germany, and great granddaughters Giuliana and Giovanna Sandonato of Argentina.
Her funeral was held on Feb. 2 at the Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy's Church and burial in St. Columba Cemetery, in Middletown.

John Sheehan
JOHN H. SHEEHAN, JR., who died age 71, was the founder of Duplicating Methods in Somerset, MA, as well as the founder of Sheehan's Office Interiors in Portsmouth.
Mr. Sheehan was an outstanding school-boy athelete at Hopkins Grammar School in Connecticut who had matriculated into Brown University, Class of 1952. He was the husband of the late Patricia Ann (McFaul) Sheehan.
John H. Sheehan, Jr. was born on April 23, 1929. He was the son of the late John H. and Ethel B. (Hines) Sheehan.
A resident of Portsmouth, Mr. Sheehan died at Newport Hospital on Jan. 30.
He is survived by his son, John H. Sheehan, III of Newport, four daughters, Sharon Sheehan Dyer of Australia, Kathleen Sheehan-Perrone of Abington, MA, Patricia Erin Sheehan-Sherman of Newport, and Maureen Theresa Schultz of Portsmouth, RI, one brother, Joseph Dean Sheehan of Newport, one brother-in-law, Cornelius George McFaul of Santa Maria, CA and 11 grandchildren.

Rosalphe Pincince
ROSALPHE PINCINCE, who has died aged 69, was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For many years, he worked as a clerk in the Navy Exchange in Newport and in Quonset Point.
Rosalphe Pincince was born on June 2, 1931 in Newport. He was the son of the Joseph and Alice (May) Pincince.
A resident of Middletown, Pincince died Feb. 1 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. He is survived by one brother, Joey Pincince, and two sisters, Margaret Mercer and Alice McDaniel.
His funeral was held on Feb. 12 in Memorial Funeral Home; His burial was in the R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
Kenneth Carson
KENNETH R. CARSON, who has died aged 79, was an artist and painter who worked as an art director at Doyle, Dane and Burnbach for 20 years.
A retired World War II veteran, Carson spent four years in the jungles of New Guinea. Upon his return in 1946 to San Francisco, he began a longtime career in art by enrolling in the California School of Fine Arts, under Clifford Still and Clay Spohn and other abstract experessionists painters. Here he met another artist, Emilienne A. (Rames), who became his wife.
Kenneth R. Carson was born on June 12, 1921 in Seattle, W.A. He was the son of Ralph and Emma (Nyquist) Carson. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, he enjoyed sailing and swimming, and took part in a demonstration for President Roosevelt when he visited Hawaii in 1937; he carried the title of Eagle Scout and was captain of a 32-foot sailboat.
A resident of Newport, Carson died Feb. 5 at Newport Hospital. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Peter R. Carson, four daughters, Susan Hesse, Penelope, Kelly and Elizabeth Carson, two sisters and three grandchildren.

ADELE (BOOTH) TOZZI, who has died at age 86, was a member of the Portsmouth Multi Purpose Senior citizens Center and a communicant of St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth.
Adele (Booth) Tozzi was born on Sep. 9, 1914, in Brooklyn, NY. She was the daughter of Thomas Booth and Katherine (Stumpf) Booth.
A resident of Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, Mrs. Tozzi died Feb. 6 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late August Mario Tozzi.
Mrs. Tozzi is survived by one son, Dr. Raymond A. Tozzi, one daughter, Dr. Adele Thomas, and two grandsons.

Alexander Daglis
ALEXANDER PETER DAGLIS, who has died at age 61, was assistant manager in the maintenance department at the Sheraton Hotel in Newport. He also worked as a driver and as a salesman for Egan Laundry and for Tom's Diners Catering Service. He was also a cook in various local restaurants.
Alexander Peter Daglis was born on April 10, 1939, in Newport. He was the son of Mary P. (Petritis) Daglis and the late Peter M. Daglis. He attended Rogers High School. A resident of Newport, Mr. Daglis died Feb. 8 at Newport Hospital.
Besides his mother, he is survived by one son, Alexander P. Daglis, Jr., one daughter, Deborah Townsend, one brother, Steven Daglis, and three sisters, Angie Borodemos, Stella Volpicelli, and Nina Caraginis, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Sullivan
ROBERT BLAKE SULLIVAN, who has died at age 79, was a custodian at the Armory on Thames Street, Newport. He was the husband of Claire (Delehanty) Sullivan and of the late Helen (Manning) Sullivan.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a member of the Federal, State and Municipal Employees Union and of the DAV.
Robert Blake Sullivan was born on April 28, 1921, in Newport. He was the son of the late Patrick and Jennie Sullivan. A resident of Newport, Mr. Sullivan died Feb. 8 at home.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Christopher Sullivan, two daughters, JoAnne daSilva, and Gale Drown, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mary Lima
MARY V. DEMELLO LIMA, who has died aged 96, was a member of Jesus Saviour Church and life member of the Rosary Sodality. She had been active in her younger years on many committees at the church, and had also been a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was the wife of the late John A. Lima.
Mary V. DeMello was born on her parents' farm on Sachuest Point in Middletown on May 16, 1904. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Vieira DeMello and Maria (Bernardo) DeMello.
A resident of Newport, Lima died at home on Feb. 13. She is survived by three sons, John A. Lima, Joseph A. Lima, Albert J. Lima, five sisters, Rose Gomers, Frances Pinheiro, Anna Silvia, Fannie Escobar, and Francelina Veader, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Lima's funeral will be held Feb. 16, at 9:00 a.m., at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m. in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Ave., Newport.

Jerome M. Price
JEROME M. PRICE, who has died aged 75, was the owner and operator of Price Plumbing and Heating Company for 30 years. He retired in 1979.
Price was also a Veteran of the Army Air Force, serving during World War II in the European Theatre. Mr. Price was a member of the Newport Lions Club, the Newport Yacht Club, the Goat Island Yacht Club and the Newport Lodge of Elks, and was also a communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. He was the husband of Anne (Venancio) Price.
Jerome M. Price was born in Providence, RI, on April 27 1925. He was the son of the late Jerome and Catherine (Murray) Price. A resident of Portsmouth, Price died Feb. 9, at the Heatherwood Nursing And Subacute Center in Newport.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one sister, Beatrice DiGiovani, and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Jordan Graham
ROBERT JORDAN GRAHAM, who has died aged 68, was the parts manager for Newport Ford in Middletown for 39 years, retiring in 1996.
Prior to that, he worked as a sheet metal worker for UG Nasons and Sons of Newport. He was a member of the North End Club and a former member of the FOP #21, both of Middletown.
Graham was was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. He received the National Defense Service Medal and retired in 1955 as corporal.
Robert Jordan Graham was born on Oct. 22, 1932, in Newport. He was the son of the late Benjamin Vernon and Elizabeth (Richardson) Graham. A resident of Newport, Robert Graham died at home on Feb. 9.
He is survived by his close friend of 27 years, Leonard Bucci, one sister-in-law, Barbara Jean Graham, and several nieces and nephews.

John Hatch (1911-2001)
JOHN F. HATCH, who has died at the age of 90, served for 35 years at Newport Electric as president of the Employees Union, retiring in 1976 as personnel director. Prior to Newport Electric, he worked as a deliveryman for the former Round House Dairy. Mr. Hatch had also been a licensed electrician. He was a member of the Wenat Shassit Tribe of Redman, where he served as past great shaman, and St. John's Lodge of Masons, where he served as past grand master. Mr. Hatch had served as past president and former board member of the Peoples Credit Union, he served on the Board of Corporations at Newport Hospital, he was a former member of the Board of Trustees, a member of the Newport Electric Retirees, and a member of the Middletown Senior Citizens Center.
Hatch enjoyed walking each day with friends around the track or through downtown. As a young man he was an amateur boxer and had been a Golden Gloves Winner. He was the husband of the late Adelaide (Durfee) Hatch.
John F. Hatch was born on Jan. 29, 1911, in Newport. He was the son of the late John I. and Anna Hatch. A resident of Middletown, Mr. Hatch died Feb. 12, at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport.
He is survived by three sons, John F. Hatch, Jr., Col. USA ret., of The Woodlands, TX, Robert Wayne Hatch, Col. USA ret., of Dunedin, FL, and Richard H. Hatch of Portsmouth, RI, 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Robert Brunetti
ROBERT D. BRUNETTI, who has died aged 68, served 23 years in the US Navy, retiring as a radioman in 1976. He was later a supply clerk for NETC Newport. Most recently, he was a security guard for U.S. Securities at the Newport Naval Base. A resident of Portsmouth, he died at home on Feb. 13.
Robert D. Brunetti was born on March 10, 1932, in Curry, Pa. He was the husband of Jean (French) Medeiros Brunetti.
Aside from his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Laurie Arguin and Christine Ibach, a son, Robert Brunetti, Jr., two sisters, Pine Meyers and Mary Psensky, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a stepson, Michael Medeiros, and a stepdaughter, Phyllis Cahoon, four step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.
A private graveside military service will be held in Rhode Island.
Florence MacKnight
FLORENCE G. (JOWSEY) MACKNIGHT, who has died aged 83, was a former resident of Newport. She died on Feb. 14 at home in Lakeville, Mass.
Born in Duneden, New Zealand, on Nov. 12, 1917, MacKnight left her home country in 1945 on a warship to meet her husband, Victor S. MacKnight on Mare Island, Calif., where he was stationed with the Navy. They later settled in Newport.
She is survived by two sons, Paul S. MacKnight and Carl G. MacKnight, one daughter with whom she lived, Carni DeCotis, one sister, Evelyn Campbell, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service was held in Middletown.

RALPH D. NELSON, who has died aged 87, was a mathematics professor at Worcestor Polytechnic Institute for 30 years and a textbook author. He retired in 1977 as "Emeritus Professor of Mathematical Sciences."
Nelson held degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Rhode Island in 1935 and in mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1936. During World War II, he was a design engineer with the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation near Pittsburgh Pa., and a research mathematician with the U.S. Time Corporation, Waterbury CT. During the 1940s and 50s, he managed the West Point and Annapolis Text Book Company.
Ralph D. Nelson was born on April 23, 1913 in Connellsville, Pa. and spent most of his youth in Newport. In 1937, he married Eda Baima of Newton, Mass., and they lived in Westborough Mass. for 30 years, in Middletown for 12 years, and in Holmes Beach, Fla. for 10 years.
He died in Mt. Dora, Fla., on Feb. 15, after suffering for several years from severe emphysema. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, Wilbur Nelson, a sister, Marian Tuxbury, three sons, Ralph Jr., Albert, and Charles, a daughter, Susan Dahlen, ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nephews and nieces.
A service celebrating his life will be held at the Lodge in Waterman Village, Mt. Dora FL at 2 p.m. on Feb. 24. Burial will be at a later date.
Fred Evans
FRED E. EVANS, who has died aged 89, was an electrical engineer and radio operator, who, as a young man, installed some of the earliest auto radio systems in the Newport area, including the Red Cross Network. He also assisted Dr. Marcus Wheatland with his x-ray experiments.
A ham radio operator since his teens, Evans was a founder of the Newport County Amateur Radio Club. He was active in all types of emergency and rescue communication networks. During World War II, he was summoned to Virginia and Georgia to work on a secret military project to jam enemy radar.
Evans worked at the former Shumaker & Evans Radio, at the TV Sales and Service, and, for 12 years, at Raytheon in Portsmouth as an electrical engineer. During his retirement, he was a support engineer for Pabst Company in Aquidneck Park.
Fred E. Evans was born in Newport on Oct. 4, 1911. A resident of Newport, he died at St. Clare Home on Feb. 17.
He is survived by three daughters, Caroline T. Clarke, Charlotte M. Beni, Elaine Cook, seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
His funeral was held on Feb. 20. He is buried in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
David Ferris
DAVID MICHAEL FERRIS, who has died aged 39, was a crew chief for the Providence Energy Company for 21 years. He was the husband of Pamela Jean (Paquin) Ferris.
Born in Portsmouth on Sept. 16, 1961, David Michael Ferris died at home on Feb. 19. A Portsmouth resident, Ferris served as a volunteer fireman for 20 years. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1979, where he had been a member of the rifle team and had won numerous awards.
Besides his wife and his father, Raymond Seth Ferris, he is survived by two daughters, Jamie Lynn Ferris and Jessica Marie Ferris, two sisters, Donna F. Groff and Debbie A. Burgo, and his grandmother, Lettie Mae (Borden) Ferris.
Funeral services will be held on Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. at the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Rd., Portsmouth, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Rd., Portsmouth. Burial will follow in Portsmouth Cemetery, Turnpike Ave., Portsmouth.
Shelley Lynn Hollis
SHELLEY LYNN HOLLIS, who has died aged 24, was a licensed pharmacist at Brooks Pharmacy in Portsmouth, where she had begun working, on a part-time basis, when she was 16 years old.
An honors graduate from Portsmouth High School in 1995, Hollis went on to matriculate from the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacology in 2000; she became a licensed pharmacist in Rhode Island and in Florida.
Hollis was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth and was the fiancT of Thomas F. Reitano of Westport, Mass.
Born in Newport on Dec. 27, 1976, Shelley Lynn Hollis was the daughter of John S. and Edra L. "Teddie" (Norton) Hollis. A resident of Portsmouth, she died on Feb. 19 at Newport Hospital. Besides her fiancT and parents, she leaves a brother, Jason M. Hollis, one uncle and two nieces.
A memorial service will be held on Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 2679 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Raymond Herbert Smith
RAYMOND HERBERT SMITH, who died aged 70, was an Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a department manager for Sears & Roebuck from 1955 until they closed, and thereafter he served as chief engineer for the Newport Dinner Train.
Mr. Smith, a fly-casting instructor for Salt Water Edge in Newport, was considered a national salt water fly-fishing reference. He co-founded the Rhody Fly Rodders and Sachuest Salt Water fly fishing club, and holds the world record for catching pollack on a fly rod. In 1977, Mr. Smith won the national fly-fishing championship, and, in 1993, he saved a drowning lobsterman off Price's Neck by casting his line to him and pulling him to shore.
Smith was a member of the Newport and Middletown Historical Societies, the Sons of the Revolution, Save the Bay, St. Lucy's Church, and the Middletown Conservation Society, where he was dubbed "Stonewall Smith."
A resident of Portsmouth, Raymond Herbert Smith was born in Newport on Aug. 1, 1930 to Raymond L. and Margaret (Coyle) Smith. He died Feb. 21 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Irene (Sousa) Smith.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Raymond A. Smith of Cape Cod, Mass, three daughters, Deborah S. Gallagher of Newport, Kathleen A. Sullivan of Middletown, Cynthia M. Mills of Bluefield, VA, a brother, Phillip Smith of Jamestown, Missouri, a sister, Janet Dring of Newport, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held Feb. 26 from the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy's Church in Middletown; burial in St. Columba's Cemetery in Middletown.

Genevieve M. (Pimental) Silvia
GENEVIEVE M. (PIMENTAL) SILVIA, who has died aged 82, was the wife of the late Manuel J. Silvia, and a communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Middletown.
A resident of Middletown, Genevieve Silvia was born in Portsmouth on September 20, 1918 to Joseph and Mary Pimental. She died on Feb. 22 at Newport Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean Carty of Jamestown, one son, Ronald Silvia of Portsmouth, two sisters, Helen Oliveira and Marion Aguiar, both of Portsmouth, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her funeral was held Feb. 26 from the Memorial Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy's Church in Middletown; burial in Newport Memorial Park, Valcluse Ave., in Middletown.
William E. Riethle, Jr.
WILLIAM E. RIETHLE, JR., who has died aged 79, worked as a child psychologist and a clinical psychologist. He served in the South Pacific with the United States Army Air Force during World War II, and in the Army Reserves during the Korean conflict. Mr. Riethle was an alumnus of New York University and the University of California, and attended St. John's Law School. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Middletown, and was active in the American Legion. He was also a member of the United Congregational Church.
A resident of Middletown, William E. Riethle, Jr. was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 13, 1921, the son of the late William E. Riethle and the late Olga (Mattison) Riethle. He was the husband of Iris (Sullivan) Riethle for 53 years. He died Feb. 22 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown.
He is survived by three sons, William E. Riethle III of Marlborough, Mass, Gary Sullivan Riethle of Temple City, CA, and Ronald Mattison Riethle of Winthrop, MA, one daughter, Linda Riethle Lannie of Portsmouth, RI, and one sister, Hazel Ach of Sarasota, FL, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be private. A memorial service will be announced later at the United Congregational Church in Middletown.

Lois (Burlingame) McCraw
LOIS (BURLINGAME) McCRAW, who has died at the age of 87, was awarded the American Defense and the European Theatre Ribbons for her service in the military. Captain McCraw attended Pembroke College and Brown University and was a graduate of Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School and Northfield Academy. She attended the WAAC officer-training program and graduated with the 5th OTC in the summer of 1942, followed by three and a half years of military service. She served at Fort Benning, GA, and overseas with the Supreme Allied Headquarters in Paris, France, during the final months of World War II.
After the war, Captain McCraw worked at the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. Her interests included involvement with the PTA and Girl Scouts, photography, painting, sewing, ceramics, rug hooking and pressed flower designs. She was active at Trinity Episcopal Church in Cranston and St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Jamestown, where she lived permanently from April 1979. Beginning in 1980, she and her husband, (ret.) Brigadier General William H. McCraw, spent winters in West Palm Beach, FL. In 1998, she and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
A resident of Jamestown, Lois (Burlingame) McCraw was born in Warwick, RI on September 26, 1913, the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Blanche E. (Rose) Burlingame.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Janet McCraw of Jamestown and Susan McCraw Helms of Fountain Hills, AZ.
A memorial service will be held on March 3, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown.
