She was the wife of the late Edwin F. Young Sr. Born in Rochester, N.H., a daughter of the late Philip and Florence (Duval) Shepard, she lived in Mansfield for 35 years. She was a purchasing assistant for Boston Scientific Corp, in Milford, for 15 years, retiring four years ago. She was a member of the First Christian Church in West Mansfield and its Missions Circle. She was a former Sunday school teacher at the church. She leaves two sons, Edwin F. Young Jr. of Warwick and Robert H. Young of North Attleboro; a daughter, Debra J. Gundlach of Mansfield; two sisters, Meredith St. Pierre in Florida and Virginia Cook in Maine; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held in First Christian Church, 11 Otis St., West Mansfield. Burial was in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton, Mass. Dorothy Ashworth, 95, of Longwood Avenue, a retired licensed practical nurse, died August 3, 2000, at Harborside-Greenwood House Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Zachariah Ashworth. Born in Cranston, a daughter of the late William and Emma A. (Lowell) Merrill, she was a resident of Warwick since 1951, previously residing in Cranston. She was a licensed practical nurse for 10 years for Rhode Island Hospital, retiring in 1965. She formerly worked forAT&T as a supervisor for 19 years in Providence. She was a 1954 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Practical Nursing. She was a communicant of St. Peter Church, Warwick. She leaves two nephews, William B. Merrill in Connecticut and John B. Merrill of Warwick; and two nieces, Marilyn J. Metcalf of Warwick and Joan Foland of Erieville, N.Y.; also several great-nieces and -nephews. She was the sister of the late Lowell B. and Russell B. Merrill and Gladys S. Merrill. The funeral was held from Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Peter Church, Fair Street. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
Diane (Johnson) Cole, 66, of Leisure Drive, an employee of AAA, died August 3, 2000, at Kent County Memorial Hospital, Warwick. She was the wife of Frank Cole. Bornin Wakefield, a daughter of the late Donald H. and Irene D. (Austin) Johnson, she had resided in Warwick for 35 years before moving to South Kingstown seven years ago. She was an operator employed by American Automobile Association in Warwick for 10 years until she became ill. She was a communicant of St. Luke Episcopal Church, East Greenwich, and an active member of the Episcopal Cursillo movement. Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Karen J. Millette of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Pamela J. Cole of East Lyme, Conn.; a sister, Karen Lawson of Hazel Park, Mich.; and two grandchildren. A funeral service was held in Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Ave., Route 5, Warwick. Burial was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
Donald J. 'Bones' McLeod, 68, of North Fair Street, a retired chemical operator, died August 3, 2000, at home. He was the husband of Patricia (Grossguth) McLeod. Mr. and Mrs. McLeod were married for 43 years. Born in Providence, a son of the late Anna McGovern, he lived in Warwick all his life. Mr. McLeod was a chemical operator for Northland Chemical Co., Providence, for six years, retiring in 1988. He had been a chemical operator at the Fields Point Mfg. Co., Providence, for 13 years. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a life member of the Pawtuxet Athletic Club and had been its social chairman. A longtime member of the Gaspee Days Committee, he was the recipient of its Abraham Whipple Award for service. He was a member of the Johnson Post VFW, and Teamsters Local 251. He was a former member of the Pawtuxet Rangers. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael A. McLeod of Girard, Kan.; three daughters, Katherine A. McLeod, Barbara E. Gomes and Tricia D. Phillips, all of Warwick; two brothers, John J. McLeod of Providence and Joseph McGovern of Providence; a sister, Mary Jane Fitzgibbons of Cranston; five grandchildren, David J. Pombo III, Jessica and Sean McLeod, Christian and Dylan Gomes; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held in Frank P. Trainor & Sons Funeral Home, 982 Warwick Ave. Burial with military honors was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
