Agnes C. Peitavino
Floral designer owned The Surprise Craftiques in Dartmouth

Agnes C. (King) Peitavino, 92, of Dartmouth died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the widow of Americo "Pete" Peitavino.

Born in Dartmouth, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Diana (Roy) King. She was a lifelong resident of Dartmouth.

Mrs. Peitavino was a member of St. George Church in Westport.

A talented floral designer who loved crafts, she owned and operated The Surprise Craftiques in North Dartmouth for many years. She loved nature and supported animal rights.

Mrs. Peitavino enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, bird watching, country music, and most of all, spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She leaves a son, Raymond L. Peitavino of New Bedford; a daughter, Eleanor A. Perry of Dartmouth; a brother, Donald H. King of Dartmouth; four grandchildren, Debra Perry of New Bedford, and Cristine and Cheryl Peitavino, both of New Bedford, and Shannon Joyal of Fall River; two great-grandchildren, Alicia and Tiffany Mattos of Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral to which relatives and friends were invited was from the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church at 10 a.m. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Bedford.

Jennie R. Feeney
Communicant of St. Luke Church

Jennie R. Feeney, 98, of Brook Street, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Vincent L. Feeney.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Joseph C. and Margaret R. (O'Neil) SanSouci, she had lived in Barrington for seven years, previously residing in Providence and North Providence.

Mrs. Feeney was a communicant of St. Luke Church.

She leaves four daughters, Mary F. Collins of Barrington (with whom she lived), Elizabeth A. Keisling of Greenville, Evelyn R. Lemieux of Fort Myers, Fla., and Margaret J. Beattie of Warwick; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

The funeral was held Monday at W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Luke Church. Burial was in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
Edmund L. Lowden
Salesman for local businesses lived in Westport 60 years

Edmund L. Lowden, 81, of Westport died at home Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Thais E. (Wood) Lowden.

Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Virginia (Lemos) and Walter E. Lowden Sr.. He had lived in Westport for 60 years.

Mr. Lowden was a salesman for various local businesses until he retired.

He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Donald E. Lowden, and his wife, Dora, of Dartmouth; two daughters, Debra E. Furze-Muratore and her husband, Joseph, of Easton, and Cindy Lee Kolesinskas and her husband, Mark, of Providence; a sister, Mildred Minnick of Salem, Ore.; three grandchildren, Cheryl A. Redanz, Jason F. Furze and his wife, Marlys, and Maranda L. Kolesinskas; a brother-in-law, David E. Wood; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Eleanor Gay.

He was the brother of the late Walter E. Lowden Jr. and Gertrude Morse.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road.

Susan M. Arruda
Operated Manchester's Nursery & Garden Center

Susan Marie (Bento) Arruda, 46, of 2970 Main Road in Tiverton, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 10, 2004, at home after a lengthy illness.

Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of Donald and Evelyn (Leite) Bento Sr. She was the fiance of John Manchester of Tiverton.

Ms. Arruda had been a waitress for nearly 20 years at the Midway Restaurant. For the past eight years, she operated Manchester's Nursery & Garden Center on Main Road in Tiverton. She was a communicant of St. Christopher's Church in Tiverton.

She leaves a daughter, Jennifer Lee Arruda of Tiverton; and a brother, Donald J. Bento, Jr.

Private arrangements are with the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home 462 Main Road in Tiverton.

Fred T. Shepard
Financial analyst, Army
veteran of World War II

Fred T. Shepard, 83, of 11 Chapman Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at home. He was the husband of Norma (Roy) Shepard.

Born in Marlboro, Mass., a son of the late Frederick and Jennie M. (Woods) Shepard, he had been a resident of Barrington for 44 years.

He had been a financial analyst for Raytheon, in Portsmouth, for 28 years, retiring in 1984.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He leaves a son, Thomas F. Shepard of Goose Creek, S.C.; a daughter, Margaret Anne Lawrence of Bristol; a brother, William F. Shepard of Marlboro; and two grandchildren.

The burial will be private.

Albert R. Cirillo
Retired cook's helper,

longtime resident

Albert R. Cirillo, 81, of 7 Creek Lane, and formerly of 79 Franklin St., died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Silver Creek Manor.

Born in Bristol, a son of the late Gaetano and Carmela (Chiarelli) Cirillo, he was a cook's helper for 25 years at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, retiring in 1983. He also worked for the former Collins & Aikman Manufacturing Co., formerly in Bristol.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Mr. Cirillo leaves three nieces, Shirley Massa of Bristol, Donna Lee Woods of Pasadena, Md., and Joann Troisi of Baltimore; three nephews, Jerry Cirillo of Westwood, Mass., Paul Cirillo of Saginaw, Mich., and Brian Cirillo of Berwyn Heights, Md. He was the brother of the late Jennie M. Girard and Louise S., Frances A., Jerry M., Carmine and Joseph A. Cirillo.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at 9 a.m. from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, State Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street.

Visiting hours are Friday, Aug. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Diabetes Foundation of R.I., 209 Cottage St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.

Edgar L. Brinkworth
Enjoyed gardening, football
and World War II history

Edgar "Ed" L. Brinkworth, 61, of Bittersweet Court, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Rhode Island Hospital after being stricken at home. He was the husband of Sharon (Ost) Brinkworth.

Born in Beloit, Kansas, the son of the late Edgar and Beulah (Miller) Brinkworth, he had lived in Mankato and Shawnee, Kansas, for many years moving to Barrington in 1976.

He graduated from Kansas State University in 1965 with a degree in business administration.

He had been employed at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Mo., then as a controller at the former Trifari, Krussman and Fischel in East Providence. He continued to work in the jewelry industry at the former Rolo Manufacturing and Victoria Creations until 1995.

He enjoyed gardening, football and was a World War II history buff.

He maintained the family homestead in Mankato and vacationed there.

He was a man of immense character and was loved and respected by colleagues, friends and family.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Jeffrey L. Brinkworth of Barrington, Christopher S. Brinkworth of Cambridge, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the United Methodist Church in Mankato on Monday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mankato.

Locally, calling hours will be in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Ave., Riverside, on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Brain Injury Association of RI, 935 Park Ave., Suite 8, Cranston, RI, 02910, would be appreciated.

Linda Scolaro
Retired stitcher and seamstress,

born in Italy

Linda (DePasquale) Scolaro, 91, of 1014 Hope Street, Benjamin Church Manor, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph Scolaro.

Born in Sicily, Italy, the daughter of the late Fortunato and Carmela (Trifilo) DePasquale, she was a resident of Bristol for 30 years, previously living in Schenectady, N.Y., and Argentina.

She was a seamstress for the Seam Stress Dress Company in Schenectady for five years, retiring in 1975. She had previously worked as a stitcher for the American Tourister Company in Warren.

Mrs. Scolaro was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

She leaves three sons, Frank Scolaro of Houston, Texas, and Fortunato and Carmelo Scolaro, both of Bristol; a brother, Francisco DePasquale of Melbourne, Australia; five grandchildren, Joseph and Daniel Scolaro, both of Bristol, Mirian Scolaro of Colorado, Albert Scolaro of Houston and George Scolaro of Gilbert, Ariz.; and a great-grandson, Joseph M. Scolaro of Bristol. He was the brother of the late Alfred, Angelo, Philip and Joseph DePasquale and Caterina Bonvegna.

A Mass of Christian burial was held, Tuesday, Aug. 10, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. The Rev. Henry P. Zinno, Jr. was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Nephews Richard A. Bonvegna and James R. McCafferty were the readers for the Mass. Mrs. Scolaro's grandsons, Joseph L. and Daniel A. Scolaro, presented the offertory gifts.

Burial followed in North Burial Ground, where Father Zinno read the committal prayers. Pallbearers was Frank, Joseph L. and Daniel A. Scolaro, Richard A. and Edward N. Bonvegna and James R. McCafferty, who also was the eulogist at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol, RI 02809.

Arrangements were been entrusted to the Sansone Funeral Home.

Thomas J. Flynn
Former resident, owned
backhoe company for many years

Thomas J. Flynn, 77, of Lomita, Calif., and formerly of Oak Avenue, Riverside, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Torrance Memorial Hospital in Lomita. He was the former husband of Nancy Heidenreich of Florida.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late Thomas and Ethel (Barrett) Flynn, he had lived in the Riverside section of East Providence and in Barrington before moving to Lomita 10 years ago.

Mr. Flynn owned and operated the Lynn Backhoe Service for 40 years before retiring in 1991. He had also been a clerk at Golden West Plywood and Lumber Co.

He leaves a daughter, Debra Gitelson of Lomita; a son, Thomas Flynn in Texas; a sister, Barbara M. Flynn of Riverside; two brothers, Frederick Flynn of Marlboro, Mass., and Louis Flynn of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held in Lomita at a later date.

Cynthia M. Palmer
Born in Bristol,

gifted vocalist

Cynthia M. Palmer, 77, of 30 Hazard Road, Newport, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Rhode Island Hospital Providence. She was the wife of Richard Palmer, her husband of 56 years.

Born in Bristol on May 24, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Mary "Netta" E. Saillant McCaw and Arthur M. McCaw. Mrs. Palmer attended St. Mary's Junior College, Raleigh, N.C., and the University of Rhode Island, graduating Phi Betta Kapa. She received a Master of Arts degree in holistic counseling from Salve Regina University in 1986.

She practiced at the Interfaith Health Care Ministries Inc. in Providence for several years. While employed there, she was accredited in clinical pastoral education to offer pastoral care to those caught in the crisis of illness.

While living in Barrington, she was active in the Barrington Players. She was a gifted vocalist and an invited soloist at many religious and civic functions, including the Bristol Fourth of July Parade. She was a member of the Henschel Club and the International Order of St. Luke the Physician. She was an avid supporter of environmental and animal protection issues, serving as a lifetime member of the Barrington Garden Club and financial encourager of the Potter Animal Shelter.

Other organizations of service and support included the Tennis Hall of Fame, the Newport Music Festival, and the Redwood Library. She was a long term member of St. Columba's Berkeley Memorial Chapel, where she served as a Eucharistic minister.

Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Laura Lee Ryan of Port Charlotte, Fla.; four sons, John S Palmer III of Cincinnati, Ohio, Richard F. Palmer of Windham, Maine, Mark D. Palmer of Apple Valley, Minn., and Arthur S. Palmer of Newport; and five grandchildren, two nephews and one niece.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Columba Berkeley Memorial Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Ave., Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the National Trust of Historic Preservation, 1785 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20036 or to the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, 50 Bellevue Ave., Newport, RI 02840.

Robert H. Batchelder
Local radio announcer, former teacher and journalist

Robert H. Batchelder, 82, of Sandwich, N.H., formerly of Rumford, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H.

He was the husband of Janet (Bentley) Batchelder. They had been married for 57 years. Born in Cranston on July 27, 1922, a son of the late Dr. Henry S. Batchelder and Nellie (Hughes) Batchelder, he lived in Rumford before moving to Sandwich in 1974.

A graduate of Brown University, he also had attended Rhode Island College and Boston University.

Mr. Batchelder was a radio announcer at stations in Rhode Island and New Hampshire. He was best known for his early morning program at WEAN in Providence, host of "The Bob and Shorty Show," in which he was both Bob and Shorty.

Mr. Batchelder had also been a teacher, in Wrentham, Mass., and a newspaper reporter at the Herald News in Fall River, where he rose to suburban news editor and assistant city editor.

After moving to New Hampshire, Mr. Batchelder served as a Carroll County deputy sheriff, until retiring in 1981. He was a secretary of the Carroll County Law Enforcement Association. He was a past president of the Moultonboro (N.H.) Lions Club.

Among his interests were music, land conservation and the community.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Stephen Batchelder of Sandwich; a daughter, Leanne Ball of Merrimack, N.H.; a brother, Richard Batchelder of Concord, Mass.; a sister, Janet Weill of Naples, Fla.; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A private graveside service will be held at the Little Pond Cemetery in Sandwich. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. in the Moultonboro Lions Club, Moultonboro, N.H.
