Louis C. Carvalho
Korean War Army veteran, truck driver for family company

Louis C. Carvalho, 76, of King Philip St., Fall River, formerly of Dover Street, Fall River, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Elvira (Mare Lopes) Carvalho.

Born in Westport, he was the son of the late Manuel Carvalho and the late Maria (Martins) Carvalho. He lived in Fall River most of his life.

Mr. Carvalho was employed as a truck driver in the construction industry for many years and for the family-owned Carvalho Oil for 35 years. He later worked at Duro Industries and as a driver for S. Howard Bus Co. for the Rhode Island School for the Deaf before retiring about eight years ago.

A Korean War Army veteran, he served in the 108th Transportation Truck Co. He received the Army Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a member of Notre Dame Parish and the Holy Ghost Club in Westport.

Mr. Carvalho leaves two daughters, Angelina Carvalho Lopes of North Dartmouth and Maria R. Luciano of Fall River; three sons, Louis C. Carvalho Jr. and Louis Lopes, both of Fall River, and Robert Carvalho of New Bedford; a sister, Alexandrina Ouellette of Fall River; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Joseph C. Manuel, Antonio Carvalho, Cecilia Medeiros, Diana Nunes and Adelaide Jones.

His funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 12, from the Silva-Faria Funeral Home in Fall River. A funeral Mass was held in Notre Dame Church. Interment was in St. Patrick Cemetery.

Ronald P. Berube
Avid fisherman,

served with Marine Corps.

Ronald P. Berube, 63, died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of Doris (Dexter) Berube. They had been married for 39 years.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of Doris (Richards) Berube and the late Emile Berube.

Mr. Berube graduated from Prevost High School in 1959. After graduation he went on to serve in the United States Marines Corps. Mr. Berube had worked for General Dynamics in Quincy, Mass., for 21 years. After the company closed, he worked for Resource Recycling Company in Lincoln, R.I. In his later years he had worked for BEST Security in Fall River. He retired in 2000.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #303. He enjoyed reading, fishing, and puzzles.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Berube is survived by two daughters, Judith A. Gomes of Warren, R.I., and Michelle A. Berek of Fall River; two sons, Michael C. Berube of Swansea, and David P. Berube of Attleboro; a sister, Paulette St. Pierre of Fall River; two brothers, Paul Berube of Swansea, and Roger Berube of Fall River; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Lucille Cooper.

His funeral was held Monday, Feb. 14, from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals in Somerset. A Mass of Christian burial was in Saint Michael's Church, Ocean Grove Avenue, Swansea. Relatives and friends attended a burial with military honors in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.

Frank E. Tully
Army veteran of W.W. II

Frank E. Tully, 85, of Heatherwood Health Care Center Newport, formerly of Portsmouth and of 128 Gerald Street, Holliston, Mass., died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005 at the center. He was the husband of Norma (Barton) Tully.

Born in Brookline, Mass., on Jan. 7, 1920, he was the son of the late Thomas and Susan (Smith) Tully.

Mr. Tully served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a communicant of St. Mary Catholic Church in Holliston. Mr. Tully was an avid football fan, especially of the World Champion New England Patriots.

Besides his wife of 40 years, he leaves three sisters, Mary Erghott of Jacksonville, Fla., Susan Kelly and Margaret Spirano, both of Jamaica Plain, Mass. He was the brother of the late Joseph Barton, Thomas Barton, Philip Barton, Elizabeth O'Connor and Peggy DePaola.

His funeral was held on Saturday, Feb. 12, from the Connors Funeral Home, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Anthony's Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Burial was in Portsmouth Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Constantino Silva
Leaves sister in East Providence

Constantino "Sonny" Silva, 77, of Marion, Mass., died Monday, February 7, 2005, at the home of his daughter in Vineyard Haven, Mass.

Mr. Constantino was the husband of the late Vernice (McCray) Silva.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Domingo and Mary (Grant) Silva. He leaves one daughter, Tara Silva, and her husband Keven Pigott, of Vineyard Haven, Mass.; a stepson, Russel Silva, of New Bedford, Mass.; a sister, Eugenia "Jennie" Delgado, of East Providence; one brother, John Silva, of Newport; and his beloved grand-daughter, Lily Pigott.

A private service was held at the Perry McStay Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Martha's Vineyard Hospital, P.O. Box 1477, Oak Bluffs, Mass., 02557.

Emily Browning
Active in many civic groups, lived in Warren eight years

Emily Browning, 95, of Bagy Wrinkle Cove, and formerly of Pawtucket and Palm Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at home. She was the wife of the late Dwight L. Browning.

Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Charles E. and Sarah E. Hague, she had lived in Pawtucket and Palm Beach for most of her life before moving to Warren eight years ago.

Before her marriage, she had worked in the foreign currency department of the former Industrial National Bank.

Mrs. Browning was involved in many civic organizations and was a lifelong member of the Pawtucket Women's Club, a member of the Pawtucket Garden Club and the Memorial Hospital Puppet Group. She was also very active in the Girl Scouts of America for many years.

She was a member of Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, and a member of Pawtucket Congregational Church, Pawtucket, and the Royal Poinciana Church in Palm Beach.

She leaves two daughters, Bonnie J. Browning of South Yarmouth, Mass., and Beverly B. Greig and her husband, Robert A. Greig, of East Greenwich; three grandchildren, Diane Royx of Tolland, Conn., Karen Greig of Chicago, Ill., and Robert Greig of Long Island, N.Y.; two great grandchildren, Emily and Brian Royx, both of Tolland; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Herbert Hague.

Her funeral was private. She was buried in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. Contributions in Mrs. Browning's memory may be made to Pawtucket Congregational Church, 40 Walcott St., Pawtucket, RI 02860, or Memorial Hospital of RI, 111 Brewster Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860. Arrangements were by D. W. Bellows & Son, 85 Park Place, Pawtucket.

Gil Barreira
Retired product manufacturer, enjoyed fishing

Gil Barreira, 86, of Market Street, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at home. He was the husband of Maria (Cabral) Barreira. They were married for 35 years.

Born in Santo Antonio Alem-Capelas, St. Michael, the Azores, he was a son of the late Gil and Maria (deJesus) Barreira. He lived in Warren for 27 years and previously lived in Bristol for 10 years.

Mr. Barreira was a product manufacturer at the former Converse Rubber company in Bristol for 11 years. When he lived in Portugal, he had worked in road construction.

He was a member of the Radiant Christian Assembly of God church in Warren, and a former member of the Lincoln Club and the Independence Club, both in Bristol.

Mr. Barreira was an avid fisherman.

He leaves a son, John Barreira of Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter, Teresa Merritt of Warren; two brothers, John Barreira of California and Jose Barreira of Bristol; two sisters, Maria De Almeida of Bristol, and Mary Ann Cotta of California; and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Gil, Alphonse and Rosa Barreiro.

His funeral was on Tuesday, Feb. 15, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, Warren, followed by a service in the Radiant Christian Assembly of God on Main Street. He was buried in South Burial Ground in Warren.

George Gouveia
Retired textile worker, Navy veteran of W.W. II

George Gouveia, 77, of 28 Campion Ave., Tiverton, died on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2005. He was the husband of Evelyn B. (Souza) Gouveia.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Medeiros) Gouveia.

Mr. Gouveia was a textile worker at Swan Finishing until his retirement in 1992.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Gouveia was a communicant of St. Theresa's Parish and was an usher there for many years.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Steven Gouveia of Tiverton; a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Leary of Tiverton; a sister, Inez St. Laurent of Fall River; two grandsons, two granddaughters, one nephew and two nieces. He was the brother of the late Joseph Gouveia.

A funeral Mass was held on Friday, Feb. 11, at St. Theresa's Church, Tiverton. Burial was in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton. Arrangements were by the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, Tiverton.

Evelyn G. Brogan
Leaves a son in Bristol

Evelyn G. "Lynn" (Miner) Brogan, 78, of South Attleboro, Mass., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005. She was the wife of Raymond Brogan, and they had been married 58 years.

The Brogans built their home together and spent countless hours sailing Narragansett Bay and throughout the East Coast and Bahamas.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Terence Brogan of Bristol and Patrick Brogan; three daughters, Colleen, Marianne and Eileen; and nine grandchildren, a great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, Feb. 15, in St. Theresa's Church in South Attleboro, with a reception following at the Brogan family residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Philip Hulitar Hospice Care Center, in care of Home and Hospice care of Rhode Island, 169 George St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.

Arrangements were by the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home in North Attleboro.

Clyde Bertrand
Owned service stations, active in Masons, DeMolay

Clyde Bertrand, 78, of 196 Colebrook Road, Little Compton, formerly of Newport, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at home after a short battle with cancer. He was the husband of Joan L. (Cameron) Bertrand.

Born in Orangefield, Tex., on Sept. 12, 1926, he was the son of the late Alicde and Bellzea (Guidry) Bertrand.

Mr. Bertrand served in the Navy during the Korean War. After six years in the Navy, he settled in Newport.

He was the owner and operator of the Sunoco gas station on Spring Street in Newport and later the owner and operator of the Exxon gas station at Two Mile Corner in Middletown. For the last 15 years, he was the service manager for Power Equipment Company of Attleboro, Mass.

Mr. Bertrand was initiated into the St. Paul's Masonic Lodge in 1962 and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a member in good stading in the Kolha Grotto, the Shriners and the Scottish Rite, was past three-time master of St. Paul's Lodge #14, had been involved with the DeMolay, including serving as DeMolay Dad, and was a member of the Eureka Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Portsmouth and the Elks Lodge.

Besides his wife of 53 years, he leaves a son, David A Bertrand of Fall River; two daughters, Barbara A. (Bertrand) Randall of Danbury, Conn., and Linda D. Bertrand of Portsmouth; three grandsons, Andrew D. Bertrand of Windsor, Va., Timothy A. Bertrand of New Bern, N.C., and Bryan D. Randall of Danbury, Conn.; his step-grandson, Kyle T. Brewington of New Bern, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bessie Lange of Vidor, Tex., and Nancy Foreman of Orange, Tex., and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joseph, Lawrence, Violet and Edith Bertrand.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 9 a.m. in Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn St., Newport. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice Outreach, 502 Bedford Street, Fall River, MA 02820 or to St. Paul's Masonic Lodge, Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
