Sandra Clooney
Sandra Clooney, 53, of 28 Morton Avenue, Newport died Monday morning January 17, 2005 after a 2 ½ year battle with cancer. She was the wife of Robert F. Clooney.
Born on November 18, 1951 in Brockton, Ma she was a daughter of Rose K. (Beaton) Rossi of W. Bridgewater, MA and the late Chester J. Rossi.
She was a graduate of W. Bridgewater High, class of 1969. She attended Massasoit Community College. Mr and Mrs. Clooney moved to Newport 28 years ago from W. Bridgewater MA. Mrs. Clooney worked at the La Forge Casino Restaurant and and was a lunch aide at the Carey School. She was a parishioner of St. Augustin Church in Newport.
Mrs. Clooney was a member of the PTO for Carey School, Thompson Middle School and Rogers High School and supported the Rogers Boosters Club and Pop Warner Football League. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, and Gooseberry Beach in Newport.
Mrs. Clooney enjoyed sports and particularly following the Patriots and Red Sox.
Besides her husband and mother she is survived by three sons Bryan R. Clooney, Michael J. Clooney, and Jefferey F. Clooney all of Newport; two brothers C. Joseph Rossi, Portsmouth, RI and David Rossi, Middletown, RI and three sisters, Roseanne Hart, Stoughton, MA, Patricia S. Luciano, Campton, NH and Rebecca J. Knox, East Bridgewater, MA, and several nieces and nephews
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, January 20, 2005 at 10 am in St. Augustin Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane Middletown, RI.

Edward H. Reed
Edward H. Reed, 84 of 46 Harrison Avenue, Newport died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at the Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Mary E. McCarthy Reed.
Born in Bowling Green, VA on December 9, 1920 he was a son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Pavey) Reed.
Mr. Reed was the owner and operator of the Appliance Service Center in Newport for 25 years, retiring in 1983 to travel throughout the world with his wife. He was known affectionately as the “Maytag Repair Man”. He was a graduate of Lee Maurey High School in Bowling Green, VA, a graduate of the Newport Secretarial School and he attended Wentworth College.
He belonged to the DeLaSalle Fathers Club and was an Assistant Cub Scout Master in Newport. Mr. Reed was a WWII veteran for the US Navy serving in Saipan, in the Pacific
Besides his wife of 61 years he leaves a son Peter D. Reed of Portsmouth, a daughter Bette Reed, of Newport a granddaughter Christine M. Woleck of Norwalk, CT, a grandson David A. Reed of Sturbridge MA and great grand daughter Grace Woleck. He was the father of the late E. Frank Reed and Jack Reed. He was the brother of the late Len Reed and John Reed.

Valerie J. (Robbie) Fagan
Valerie J. (Robbie) Fagan, 50 of 157 Center Avenue, Middletown, wife of Peter J. Fagan, died Friday September 24, 2004 at the Newport Hospital after a battle with a long illness.
Born on April 21, 1954 in Woonsocket, RI she was a daughter of the late Alexander B. and Marcia J. (Walsh) Robbie.
Growing up in Cheshire, CT, Mrs. Fagan was a 1972 graduate of Cheshire High School. She received a Bachelor of Science from Salve Regina University in 1976. Mrs. Fagan had the distinction of being one of the original “Firestone Nurses”, as a private nurse to Mrs. Firestone in Newport for ten years. She enjoyed and worked for many years at local nursing homes including Blenheim Newport and most recently at the St. Clare Home.
Mrs. Fagan was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed spending her time with her family and friends at the local beaches and enjoyed visiting New Hampshire.
Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters; Kara Fagan, Kimberley, WI; Kristen and Jessica Fagan, both of Middletown; her mother Marcia J. Robbie, Cheshire, Ct; a brother William Robbie, Avon, CT and a sister Elizabeth Drechnowicz, North Kingston, RI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Spring ST, Newport, RI at 9:00 am. Burial will be graveside in ST. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown, RI.

Mary A. Davis Barwis
Mary A. Davis Barwis, 40, of 7819 Thornfield Ct., Fairfax Station, VA died on Wednesday,October 13, 2004 at home unexpectedly. She was the wife of CDR Robert C. Barwis, USN. Born in Naples, Italy on August 3, 1964 she was a daughter of Capt. John P. Davis, USN Ret. and Patricia F. (McGinn) Davis, of Newport.
Mrs. Barwis was a graduate of Rogers High School, class of 1983 were she was a member of the Softball Team and an all around athlete. She attended the University of Rhode Island and Johnson & Wales University.
Married to her husband for 20 years, Mrs. Barwis was a devoted Navy wife and mother. Besides her husband and parents she leaves two sons John C. Barwis, Robert Barwis and a daughter Alexandra M. Barwis; all at home. She also leaves four sisters, Nancy E. Hrbek, Merrimack, NH; Colleen A. Adams, Melrose, MA; Elizabeth I. Davis, Atlanta, GA; Jennifer P. Corbett, Merrimack, NH; three brothers John P. Davis, III, Newport, RI; Michael M. Davis, Charlotte, NC, and Leo M. Davis, Newport; as well as many aunts uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was the granddaughter of the late Leo and Irene King Mcginn and the late John P. and Mary Sullivan Davis.

Armand R. Medeiros
Armand R. Medeiros, 83, of 22Sheffield Avenue, Newport RI died on October 20, 2004 at the Forest Farm Health Care Centre after a battle with cancer. Married for 54 years he was the husband of late Delores R. (Leonard) Medeiros.
Born in Fall River MA on September 30, 1921 he was the youngest of eight children of the late Mariano and Maria (Rodrigues) Medeiros.
Mr. Medeiros was a WWII Veteran serving in the European Campaign in Italy and France as well as Africa.
Mr. Medeiros moved to Newport in 1958 where he worked in retail. He was employed by Jay Andrews Clothing and then the Narragansett Clothing Company, where he worked for 30 years before retiring.
Mr. Medeiros was involved in many activities including the St. Mary’s Choir where he was a featured soloist singing “Danny Boy”; Jesus Savior Choir, and the Portsmouth Senior Center Chorus. He was also a life long member of the Newport Knights of Columbus, and a past member of the Kiwanis Club. He was an accomplished artist and remained active in the the local musical and artistic community. He and his wife enjoyed traveling.
Mr. Medeiros leaves 3 sons Stephen A. Medeiros and Peter A. Medeiros, both of Portsmouth and David M. Medeiros of Newport. Two daughters Elizabeth R. Anderson and Christine A. Wygant both of Newport, eight grand children, and one great grandchild.
The Funeral will take place on Saturday October 23, 2004 from the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport at 9:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday in St. Joseph Church, Broadway and Mann Ave, Newport at 10:00am. Burial will be private.

Francis Joseph Martin
Francis Joseph Martin, 86, of Newport, RI died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport in 1918, Francis attended St. Mary’s School and Rogers High. In his youth he was a ball boy at the Newport Casino; he was also a member of the St. Joseph’s Church Players’ Guild. He was a past president of the Jesus Savior School PTA
He served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army Air Force, 99th Bomb Group, in the African, Middle Eastern and European theaters of operation during WWII.
Frank had a long career as a civilian employee of the US Navy in Newport, retiring as a management analyst for the Naval Underwater Systems Center in 1978, after 38 years of service. He later worked for McLaughlin Research in Middletown.
He was the founder and first president of the Circle of Scholar at Salve Regina University, and served the organization for many years. A lifelong learner, a one point Frank was Salve’s oldest student. Mr. Marin served as a member of the People’s Credit Union Board of Directors for 30 years and was also a board member of the Star of the Sea Corporation. Frank was also a volunteer for Child and Family Services, and most recently, the Rose Island Light House Foundation.
Frank is survived by his wife of 54 years, Claire Lozito Martin, his four children, David Michael Martin, Middletown, Ann Martin Nagel, Mansfield, MA, Mary Martin Fitzgerald, Newport and Nancy Martin Leonardo, Newport; one grandchild Sarah Rose Nagle of Mansfield MA.
The youngest of 11 children of the late Annie Vanneman and John Aloysius Martin, he was the brother of the late Thomas Martin, Sr., Katherine Martin, Phillip Martin, Helen Martin, Kimball Martin, Elizabeth Smith, Alice Martin, Mary Hutchins, Margaret Cremin and Frederick Martin.
Mr. Martin’s funeral will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 8:00 am from the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport. Arthur L. Nolan
Arthur L. Nolan, 80 of 61 Islington Avenue, Portsmouth RI, died on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Care Center. He was the husband of Doris (McAlinden) Nolan.
Born on June 6, 1924 in Bell, CA, he was a son of the late Herbert and Anna (Collins) Nolan.
Mr. Nolan moved to Newport when he was 7 years old and lived in the Fifth Ward section of Newport. He was a graduate of the St. Augustin Grammar School, the former DeLaSalle Academy, Class of 1942 and Hunter College, NYC, NY.
Mr. Nolan was a WWII Navy Veteran as a submarine serviceman. His career spanned many years with AT&T and he retired as a communications executive with the company.
Mr. Nolan, known fondly by his friends as “Ozzie”, was a well-known local artist. He was a co-chair of “Art on the Lawn” for several years, and a member of the Spring Bull Gallery.
Besides his wife of 54 years, Mr. Nolan leaves three daughters Virginia Schurman, Portsmouth, RI, Patricia Rinsky, East Brunswick, NJ and Janet Santos, East Hampton, CT, and two sons Michael Nolan, Spring, TX and Robert Nolan, Portsmouth, RI . He also leaves sisters Marie Underwood, Newport, RI and Evelyn Craft, Jacksonville, FL; and brothers Robert Nolan, Atlanta, GA and James Nolan, Los Angeles, CA; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was the father of the late John G. Nolan; and brother of the late John Nolan and Herbert Nolan.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Arthur Nolan will be held at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport on Saturday, October 30, 2004 beginning at 2:00pm.

Eileen M. Dwyer
Eileen M. Dwyer, 79, of 39 Everett St., Newport, wife of the late Francis J. Dwyer, died peacefully at home in her sleep on Friday, October 29, 2004.
Born on January 31, 1925 in Cambridge, MA she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Catherine (Baker) Calder. Mrs. Dwyer move with her family to Newport in her youth. She was a graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1933. She was employed for many years as a telephone operator for New England Telephone in Newport. Later in her life Mrs. Dwyer became a Real Estate Agent and worked for many local agencies.
She was a parishoner of St. Mary’s Church, Newport in her youth and a member of the St. Mary’s Choir, and more recently a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church, Newport. Mrs. Dwyer was a past member of the Newport Yacht Club and an active volunteer for the organizations social events. She loved being a Newporter, Ocean Drive and was an avid Garage Sale attendee. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who will be dearly missed by her family.
She leaves sons Kevin F. Dwyer, and Francis J. Dwyer, Jr., both of Newport, Timothy P. Dwyer, of Jamestown, and two daughters Rita L. Dwyer, of Santa Barbara, CA and Eileen F. Kondor, of Pearland, TX, and four grandchildren Finn P. and Gaelyn A. Dwyer, and Taryn and Ryan Kriepe; and one newphew Bernard “Buddy” Kane. She was the sister of the late Margaret Lawrence and Rita Kane, both of Newport.

Eleanor A. (Peterson) Mally, 72 of 60 Berkeley Avenue, Newport, died Thursday, November 4, 2004, at Newport Hospital after a short illness. She was the wife of Thomas E. Mally,
Born in Newport, RI on June 3, 1932 she was the daughter of the late Paul and Sarah (Harper) Peterson.
A life long Newporter she was a graduate of the former St. Joseph Grammar School and a graduate of former St. Catherine Academy Class of 1950.
Mr. and Mrs. Mally were married in Newport and celebrated their 50th anniversary in February 2004. Mrs. Mally was a homemaker and later in her life she worked for 17 years as an office assistant at Sullivan School in Newport. She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport.. Mrs. Mally was devoted to her family and loved spending time with them and her friends at Third Beach in Middletown.
Besides her husband she leaves three sons, Hugh E. Mally, Boca Raton FL; Charles j. Mally and Thomas J. Mally, both of Newport; a daughter Sarah L. Michael, Newport; four grand children and one great granddaughter. She also leaves her Aunt Mary T. Harper of Middletown. She was the sister of the late Paul D. Peterson and Peter M. Peterson.

Evelyn Ann (Maloof) Downes
Evelyn Ann (Maloof) Downes, 74, died yesterday at Newport Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Sgt. John Downes of the Newport Police Department. Born in Pawtucket on August 3, 1930 she was the daughter of the late Louis and Sophie (Boulice) Maloof.
She is survived by her son, David K. Downes, her daughter-in-law, Karen (Kelly) Downes, two grandchildren, Julia, 6 and John Thomas, 4, of Newport, and her brother, Louis Maloof of North Chatham, MA, as well as many nieces and nephews, whom she loved. Five brothers predeceased her: George, John, Nick, Dan and David Maloof.
Mrs. Downes, a longtime resident of Newport, lived at 111 Washington Street and formerly of Sylvan St. She was a graduate of Rogers High School and Rhode Island College. She worked as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Company.
A woman of many talents, she was a writer of poetry and children’s stories and a fine arts painter. When in her sixties, she decided to go to college. Traveling to Providence, rain or shine by bus, she graduated with her degree at age 66.
Mrs. Downes was an active volunteer. She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church, Newport. For years she led the reading of the rosary at nursing homes. Until her admission to the hospital on November 12, she was cooking meals for shut-ins.
A very determined woman, she rode her motorized wheel chair four blocks to cast her vote on Election Day, carrying her oxygen with her.
Visiting hours in the Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 4-7 pm. Funeral Friday, Nov. 19, 2004 at 8:00a.m. from the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will take place graveside in St. Columba’s Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.

Barbara A. (O’Brien) Dugan
Barbara A. (O’Brien) Dugan, 53, of 113 Carroll Avenue, Newport, died Friday morning November 19, 2004 at home. She was the wife of Kevin M. ‘Shorty” Dugan.
A lifelong Newport she was born May 28, 1951. She was the daughter of the late Robert H. O’Brien, Jr.
A graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1969. After graduating high school Mrs. Dugan worked at the Naval Supply Deport before going to work for the Newport School Department, where she was employed for 30 years. She retired in 2000 due to her 11 year battle with Breast Cancer.
Mrs. Dugan was an avid tennis player all of her life and competed in many local competition. She loved the beach and spent much of her free time at Gooseberry Beach, where she was a member.
While battling her cancer she participated in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. The entire Dugan family helped organize the Andrea Rizzo Memorial Foundation after the loss of their dear friend. The foundation supports the Dance Therapy Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY for children and young patients battling cancer.
Besides her husband she is survived by her daughter Katherine “Katie” Dugan, Newport; her brother Robert H. O’Brien, III, Henderson NV; and nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Terence P. O’Brien and daughter of the late Elizabeth Sullivan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on November 22, 2004 at St. Joseph Church, Broadway and Mann Avenues, Newport at 10:00am. Burial will be private.

Valerie Dawn (Rueb) Norbury
Valerie Dawn (Rueb) Norbury, 45, of 116 Harvest Drive, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Providence, RI, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004 at home after a 16 month battle with cancer. She was the wife of Paul A. Norbury.
Born Nov. 28, 1958 in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of Margo (Tatoian) Rueb and the late Willis Rueb.
Mrs. Norbury was a 1976 Graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in Providence, RI.
She worked as an Account Administrator for the Federal Department of Social Security, and then as a Secretary in the Admissions Department for the Community College of RI. Mrs. Norbury enjoyed traveling, camping, and hiking. She was a gourmet cook, an avid gardener, jazz music enthusiast, and devoted wife and mother.
Mrs. Norbury was a member of the Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church.
She leaves a husband, Paul A. Norbury, two daughters, Vanessa Rose Farinelli and Christina Dawn Farinelli, and her black Lab, Tucket of Portsmouth, RI, her mother Margaret (Tatoian) Rueb of Barrington, RI, two brothers, Gregory Paul Rueb of Barrington, RI, and Eric Gordon Rueb of East Providence, RI.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004 at Sts.Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, 402 Broadway in Providence, RI.

Rosario J. Marchese
Rosario J. Marchese, 91, formerly a fifty year resident of Fall River, MA , died June 8, 2005 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Kathlyn (Doerbeck) Marchese.
Mr. Marchese was born in Newport, RI on February 1, 1914. He was a son of the late Angelo and Sebastiana (Caccomo) Marchese.
Mr. Marchese grew up in Newport. He started his landscaping career as a young man while working on the James’ Estate in Jamestown RI. After the war he continued his landscaping career for a brief time in Connecticut.
After moving to Fall River, MA, he worked for the Fall River Catholic Diocese as a landscaper and caretaker in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery, retiring in 1966. After his retirement he went on to work for the O’Day Sailboat Company of Fall River. While living in Fall River he was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church.
Mr. Marchese was a veteran of the U. S. Army and served in Africa and Italy during WW II. For his entire life, he was very proud to have served his country.
In 2000 Mr. Marchese moved back to Aquidneck Island and was a resident of Blenheim Newport in Middletown.
Mr. Marchese was a devoted family man known and loved for his sense of humor. He was a self taught artist, an avid gardener and a resourceful handyman.
He was a member of the Teamsters and was involved with the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by a daughter Marilyn M. Butler and son-in-law Thomas H. Butler of Gales Ferry, CT; a son Michael A. Marchese and daughter in law Mary L. Marchese of West Boylston, MA; four grandchildren Gregory J. Butler, Amy K. Butler, Jeffrey M. Marchese, Cara M. Marchese; his brother John Marchese of Newport, a sister Mary Marshall of Portsmouth RI. He was the brother of the late James Marchese, Joseph J. Marchese, Nancy Marchese and Rose Corridon.

Rita Elizabeth (Cooney) Mc Aloon
Rita Elizabeth (Cooney) Mc Aloon, 89, of 7 Algonquin DR, Middletown, passed away at Newport Hospital after a brief illness on July 4, 2005. Mrs. Mc Aloon, the daughter of James Cooney (County Tyrone, Ireland) and Mary Brennan Cooney (County Sligo, Ireland) was born in Pawtucket, RI on July 15, 1915.
She is survived by her husband Albert J. Mc Aloon of Middletown, sons Albert J. Mc Aloon, Jr. (USN, Ret.) of Springfield, VA and Patrick C. Mc Aloon of Vienna, VA; a daughter Mary M. Watanabe of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren Reed A. Johnson of Kaui, HI, Hugh B. Mc Aloon of Los Angeles, CA, Katherine R. Mc Aloon of Alexandria, VA, Dana A. Watanabe of Irvine, CA, Brendan D. Mc Aloon and Matthew P. Mc Aloon of Vienna, VA; and a great-granddaughter Corey Johnson of Kaui, HI; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
She was raised in Pawtucket and graduated from Pawtucket East High School. She moved to Aquidneck Island in 1946 and lived in the Fifth Ward until 1970, when she moved to Middletown. In her career as a bookkeeper, she worked for the Navy Exchange, S. Adelson & Co.; retiring from Providence Gas in the 1980’s.
She was active in Junior Catholic Daughters and the League of Women Voters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday July 11, 2005 at 11:00am in St. Augustin Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport; followed by interment in St Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.
The family asks that donations in her memory be made to Lucy’s Hearth, 909 West Main Rd., Middletown.
