Warwick – Edmond B. Lynch, age 81, of Division St., a retired mechanical engineer, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Kent Hospital, Warwick. He was the husband of the late Frances H. (Dallin) Lynch. Born in Providence, a son of the late John J. and Mary (Heron) Lynch, he had lived in Greenville for 30 years and West Warwick for 19 years before moving to Warwick 2 years ago. He worked as a flow consultant for B.I.F. Industries for 35 years before retiring in 1983. He was a World War II Army veteran who last served as an administrative supply officer at Headquarters South Pacific Base Command. He was a member of American Legion Post 2, West Warwick and the VFW. He is survived by five sons, Edmond B. Lynch Jr. of Ledyard, CT, Gerald D. Lynch of Wakefield, Stephen D. Lynch of Milton, VT, Kevin M. Lynch and Thomas H. Lynch both of North Kingstown.; one sister, Mary McAteer and one brother, James Lynch both of Cranston and eight grandchildren. He was the brother of the late John Lynch. Funeral Saturday, Dec. 20, at 8 am from Carpenter-Jenks Quaker Lane Chapel, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick. Anna T. Phelps age 71 of Victory Highway a retired teacher and volunteer died Wednesday at home. She was the wife of Donald K. Phelps. Born in Providence a daughter of the late Paul and Mary ( Longo ) Ricciardi she had lived in West Greenwich since 1956. Mrs. Phelps was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and received her masters degree in Political Science from URI in 1978. She had taught political science at CCRI before retiring. Mrs. Phelps had also worked at the former Health Data Systems. She was a volunteer for CASA, court appointed special advocate. Mrs. Phelps was a member of Amnesty International, and enjoyed her family and her home. Besides her husband Donald, she is survived by one daughter; Judy M. Ogg of West Greenwich, two sons; Mark C. Phelps of Attleboro, MA and Tony C. Phelps of West Greenwich. One brother; Joseph N. Ricciardi of Vero Beach, Fla. and one sister Corinne Jackson of Brooklin, ME. and eight grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Paul M. Ricciardi. The funeral service officiated by her son Tony C. Phelps will be Saturday at 11 AM at Carpenter-Jenks Quaker Lane Chapel, 659 East Greenwich Ave. West Warwick. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, East Greenwich.

Warwick – Alice M. Shuman, age 82, of Pocahontas Drive, a retired telephone operator, died Tuesday, January 6, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of Edgar L. Shuman. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late James and Bertha (Brown) O’Rourke, she had lived in Warwick since 1987. She worked for 15 years as an operator for several local companies before retiring. She was a very active member of Pawtuxet Baptist Church, Cranston. She was a member of the Gaspee Seniors. She was an avid homemaker and an excellent baker. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Alan L. Shuman of Narragansett; one daughter, Janet Calligano of Cranston; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral service, conducted by the Rev. Scott Roberts, will be held Saturday, January 10, at 10:00 am in Pawtuxet Baptist Church, Broad Street, Cranston. Linda P. Lavallee age 62 of Ashaway Road Westerly died Monday at home. She was the former wife of Rev. Donald A. Lavallee. Born in Providence a daughter of the late Edmund E. and Virginia ( Macomber ) Pattison she had lived in Cranston for many years moving to Exeter and Westerly 7 years ago. Mrs. Lavallee was a legal assistant for a law office in Wakefield. She was a volunteer at the W.A.R.M Shelter in Westerly, attended the Church of the Holy Spirit in Charlestown, enjoyed gardening and doing puzzles. She is survied by a son David R. Lavallee and his wife Jessica of North Kingstown. A Memorial service conducted by the Rev. Stahl will be Wednesday January 7th at 7 PM at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 4150 Old Post Road, Charlestown, R. I. 02813. Palmetto, FL – William Sanderson, age 83, of Majestic Way and of Bradford Ave., Warwick, a retired jewelry manufacturing manager, died Monday, December 15, at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, FL. He was the husband of Alice G. (Essex) Sanderson. They had been married for 59 years. Born in Arkwright, RI, a son of the late Everett and Lena M. (Perry) Sanderson, he grew up in West Warwick, had lived in Attleboro, MA for 35 years and had been a winter resident of Tampa, FL and Palmetto since 1981 before moving to Palmetto 8 years ago. He had been a summer resident of the Potowomut section of Warwick since 1945. He worked for 45 years for the former Finberg Manufacturing Company of Attleboro. He was a World War II Army Veteran and a survivor of the Pearl Harbor Invasion. He was a member of the Bay State Chapter of Pearl Harbor Invasion Survivors and was a national past president of the 24th Infantry Division Association. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Attleboro. He was a mason and a member of Overseas Lodge 40, F&AM; a past master of Ezekiel Bates Lodge AF&AM, Attleboro; a past high priest of King Hiram Chapter; a past illustrious master of Attleboro Council; past commander of Bristol Commandary; a recipient of the York Cross of Honor Providence Priory; Scottish Rite Valley of Providence; Aleppo Shrine, Boston; a past president of King Phillip Shrine Club of Bristol County; a past Monarch of Nava Grotto, now Tabab Grotto of Quincy, MA and a past patron of Hope Chapter 41 OES, Attleboro. He was a former Dad for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, Attleboro; was a member of Attleboro Elks Lodge 1014 and the VFW in Attleboro. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Lena May “Shirley” Forgiel of Coventry and Pearl Pearson of Barrington and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Everett Sanderson and Ida Roberts. Coventry – Lillian E. Bertram, age 74, of Log Bridge Rd., a retired moving and storage company owner, died Sunday, December 21, at home.
She was the wife of the late Frank A. Bertram Jr. Born in Cranston, a daughter of the late Horace and Corinne (LeBlanc) Davis, she had lived in Cranston and Warwick before moving to Coventry 12 years ago. She was co-owner with her husband, and served as vice president of, Capital Moving & Storage for 12 years before retiring in 1988. She previously had worked for 10 years as an operator for the former New England Telephone Company. She was a former Brownie Troop Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother in Warwick. She was a member of the Norwood Bowling League, the Foster Parent’s Association, the DARE Organization and the Eleven o’clock Arthritic Class at Absolute Fitness. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed cake decorating and arts and crafts. She is survived by four sons, F. Allen Bertram of Cranston, Thomas S. Bertram of Warwick, Kenneth E. Bertram of North Scituate and David P. Bertram of Coventry; two daughters, Susan P. Robinson of Warwick and Tina A. Beausoleil of Exeter; one brother, Charles “Eddie” Davis of Warwick; one sister, Eleanor Anderson of Fox Fire Village, NC and nine grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Michael T. Bertram. C. Edwin Lewis, Jr. age 84 of Wilbur Ave. a retired Special Insurance Agent died Wednesday at R. I. Hospital. He was the husband of the late Joanne ( Shellenberger ) Lewis. Born in Cranston a son of the late Charles Edwin Lewis Sr. and Bessie I. ( Boring ) Lewis he had been a lifelong resident of Cranston. Mr. Lewis served in the U. S Army as a Technical Sergeant during WWII in London. He was a 1949 graduate of the University of Rhode Island and a member of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity at the University. Mr. Lewis was a special agent in the Insurance Industry and started his career with Middlesex Mutual which was acquired by Century Mutual then was employed at Attleboro Mutual and retired in 1995 from NIF Services in Warwick. He was a member of the New England 1752 Club for Insurance Professionals. He was a past president of the Cranston Historical Society, was a past president of the Oaklawn Library Assoc. which is now affiliated with the Cranston Library Assoc. He was a member and held the rank of Captain in the Pawtuxet Rangers. He was a member of the Gaspee Days Committee and the Bi-Centennial Committee for the State of R. I. He was a member of the Oaklawn Community Baptist Church and had served as Moderator and Deacon. Mr. Lewis was an Auctioneer. He is survived by two sons; Chuck Lewis of Warwick and Scott P. Lewis of North Kingstown and his companion Kathleen M. Harris of Cranston. A graveside service will be Friday January 2nd at 9:30 AM at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, Post Rd. North Kingstown followed by a Memorial Service at 11 AM in Meshanticut Park Baptist Church, 180 Oaklawn Ave. Cranston. memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society will be Appreciated.

West Warwick – Raymond G. Ray, age 73, of Burlingame Road, a retired lithographer and musician, died Monday, December 29, at Kent Hospital, Warwick. He was the husband of Cecelia K. (Ventura) Ray. A lifelong resident of West Warwick, he was the son of Mabel (Mattias) Ray of West Warwick and the late Joseph A. Ray Sr. He worked for over 40 years as a lithographer last working for Jay Printing of Warwick for 10 years before retiring in 1995. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War who also served four years with the United States Naval Reserve in Providence. He was a part-time musician who played clarinet and saxophone with the 440th Army Band at Fort Bragg, NC. He also played for many years with the Fred Shadeck Band who over the years played many times at the former Tiogue Vista. He was a member of American Legion Post 2, West Warwick. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Cranston Country Club where he had also worked part-time as a greens keeper. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by three sons, Brian G. Ray of Norfolk, MA, Michael J. Ray of West Warwick and Timothy J. Ray of Providence; one brother, Joseph A. Ray Jr. of West Warwick and four grandchildren. East Greenwich – Allen R. G. “Boots” Peabody Jr., age 69, of Adirondack Drive, a builder and officer of a home construction company, died Saturday, January 3, at Miriam Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Barbara J. (Inglis) Peabody. Born in Warwick, a son of Helen (Warhurst) Peabody of Rutland, VT and the late Allen R.G. Peabody Sr., he had lived in West Warwick before moving to East Greenwich in 1967. He had worked for forty years in the home construction industry and was an officer of Greenwich Valley Builders Inc. of East Greenwich. He was a United States Army Veteran. He later served in the United States Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Rhode Island Home Builders Association. He enjoyed bowling and golf. He also enjoyed being involved with his grandchildren’s sports and activities. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Allen R.G. Peabody III of Coventry and Steven J. Peabody of West Warwick; two sisters, Sally Zetts of FLA and Margaret McDonough of Danby, VT and four grandchildren. North Kingstown – Myra L. Crossley, age 79, of Deerfield Court, died Wednesday, December 31, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of Richard A. Crossley. They had been married 57 years. Born in Chicago, IL, a daughter of the late Max and Marie (Kosterka) Leskiw, she had lived in Wayne, NJ and Candia, NH before moving to North Kingstown seven years ago. She was a member of All Saints Memorial Church, Providence, where she was a very active volunteer especially helping to decorate the sanctuary at Easter and Christmas. She attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wickford. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels who often baked holiday cookies for those she served meals to. She loved knitting and sewing and enjoyed playing cards and games. She was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan. Born to Ukrainian immigrants, she was very proud of her heritage. Spending time with her family was very important to her and she will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, twins Bonnie Arsenault of Greene, RI and Billie Ruggiero of Mansfield, NJ and Barbara Hayes of Seekonk, MA; two sons, Rick Crossley of Phillipsburg, NJ and Scott Crossley, Rehoboth, MA; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Ralph L. Umphres, 85, went home to be with the Lord, July 11, 2004, in Kent Hospital, Warwick, Rhode Island, after a brief illness. The family will greet friends at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 16, at the High Street Baptist Church Chapel, Springfield, Missouri. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the White Chapel Cemetery, Springfield, Missouri.
Ralph was born on December 5, 1918, in Rogersville, Missouri, to Clarence and Alva Umphres. He married his childhood sweetheart, Arcena Wells, on April 26, 1941. They were married 53 years before she preceded him in death, December 18, 1994. They were active members of the High Street Baptist Church, Springfield, Missouri. Ralph worked for Peverly Dairy before starting his own painting company. His work was well-known in Springfield and surrounding areas. Ralph is best remembered for his love of going to church, his gentle nature, his strong work ethic, and the love he had for his wife and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Florence Mildred Umphres and Marie Smith, and two great grandchildren, Bailey Faith Stricklin and Noah Stricklin. He is survived by his four daughters and sons-in law: Shirley and Don Carney, Lees Summit, Missouri, Virginia and Sam Stricklin, Warwick, Rhode Island, Peggy and Gary Hessee, Springfield, Missouri, Pam and Monty Anderson, Lenexa, Kansas, and twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-granchildren. He is survived also by one sister, Letha Blevins, Nixa, Missouri, two brothers, Estel Umphres, Hollister, Missouri, Donald Umphres, Arcadia, California, and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
