Raymond Herbert Smith
RAYMOND HERBERT SMITH, who died aged 70, was an Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a department manager for Sears & Roebuck from 1955 until they closed, and thereafter he served as chief engineer for the Newport Dinner Train.
Mr. Smith, a fly-casting instructor for Salt Water Edge in Newport, was considered a national salt water fly-fishing reference. He co-founded the Rhody Fly Rodders and Sachuest Salt Water fly fishing club, and holds the world record for catching pollack on a fly rod. In 1977, Mr. Smith won the national fly-fishing championship, and, in 1993, he saved a drowning lobsterman off Price’s Neck by casting his line to him and pulling him to shore.
Smith was a member of the Newport and Middletown Historical Societies, the Sons of the Revolution, Save the Bay, St. Lucy’s Church, and the Middletown Conservation Society, where he was dubbed "Stonewall Smith."
A resident of Portsmouth, Raymond Herbert Smith was born in Newport on Aug. 1, 1930 to Raymond L. and Margaret (Coyle) Smith. He died Feb. 21 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Irene (Sousa) Smith.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Raymond A. Smith of Cape Cod, Mass, three daughters, Deborah S. Gallagher of Newport, Kathleen A. Sullivan of Middletown, Cynthia M. Mills of Bluefield, VA, a brother, Phillip Smith of Jamestown, Missouri, a sister, Janet Dring of Newport, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held Feb. 26 from the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown; burial in St. Columba’s Cemetery in Middletown.

Genevieve M. (Pimental) Silvia
GENEVIEVE M. (PIMENTAL) SILVIA, who has died aged 82, was the wife of the late Manuel J. Silvia, and a communicant of St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown.
A resident of Middletown, Genevieve Silvia was born in Portsmouth on September 20, 1918 to Joseph and Mary Pimental. She died on Feb. 22 at Newport Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean Carty of Jamestown, one son, Ronald Silvia of Portsmouth, two sisters, Helen Oliveira and Marion Aguiar, both of Portsmouth, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her funeral was held Feb. 26 from the Memorial Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown; burial in Newport Memorial Park, Valcluse Ave., in Middletown.
William E. Riethle, Jr.
WILLIAM E. RIETHLE, JR., who has died aged 79, worked as a child psychologist and a clinical psychologist. He served in the South Pacific with the United States Army Air Force during World War II, and in the Army Reserves during the Korean conflict. Mr. Riethle was an alumnus of New York University and the University of California, and attended St. John’s Law School. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Middletown, and was active in the American Legion. He was also a member of the United Congregational Church.
A resident of Middletown, William E. Riethle, Jr. was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 13, 1921, the son of the late William E. Riethle and the late Olga (Mattison) Riethle. He was the husband of Iris (Sullivan) Riethle for 53 years. He died Feb. 22 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown.
He is survived by three sons, William E. Riethle III of Marlborough, Mass, Gary Sullivan Riethle of Temple City, CA, and Ronald Mattison Riethle of Winthrop, MA, one daughter, Linda Riethle Lannie of Portsmouth, RI, and one sister, Hazel Ach of Sarasota, FL, six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be private. A memorial service will be announced later at the United Congregational Church in Middletown.

Lois (Burlingame) McCraw
LOIS(BURLINGAME) McCRAW, who has died at the age of 87, was awarded the American Defense and the European Theatre Ribbons for her service in the military. Captain McCraw attended Pembroke College and Brown University and was a graduate of Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School and Northfield Academy. She attended the WAAC officer-training program and graduated with the 5th OTC in the summer of 1942, followed by three and a half years of military service. She served at Fort Benning, GA, and overseas with the Supreme Allied Headquarters in Paris, France, during the final months of World War II.
After the war, Captain McCraw worked at the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. Her interests included involvement with the PTA and Girl Scouts, photography, painting, sewing, ceramics, rug hooking and pressed flower designs. She was active at Trinity Episcopal Church in Cranston and St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Jamestown, where she lived permanently from April 1979. Beginning in 1980, she and her husband, (ret.) Brigadier General William H. McCraw, spent winters in West Palm Beach, FL. In 1998, she and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
A resident of Jamestown, Lois (Burlingame) McCraw was born in Warwick, RI on September 26, 1913, the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Blanche E. (Rose) Burlingame.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Janet McCraw of Jamestown and Susan McCraw Helms of Fountain Hills, AZ.
A memorial service will be held on March 3, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown.

Marie Margaret (O’Handley) Fitzsimmons
Marie Margaret (O’Handley) Fitzsimmons, 87, of Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died Monday, Dec 18, 2000 at the Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.
She was the wife of the late John E. Fitzsimmons, who died in 1967, and wife of the late Francis X. Hennessey, who died in 1957.
Born in Boston, MA, on Nov 29, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Ned and Katherine O’Handley.
Mrs. Fitzsimmons had worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, MA, from 1951 – 1957. She was a supervisor from 1958 – 1978, and a worker for the food service department at the Newport Naval Hospital. Mrs. Fitzsimmons was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth and also a member of the Portsmouth Senior Citizens Center. She was an avid reader and was also known for her fabulous New England cooking.
She is survived by two sons: Albert T. Hennessey of Pocassett, MA and John E. Fitzsimmons of Falmouth, ME, three daughters: Katherine Radosevich of Portsmouth, RI, Elaine Ellis of North Kingston, RI, and Mariah Fitzsimmons-Mello of Somerset, MA, 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Francis Hennessey, James Hennessey, Joseph Hennessey and Helen Johnson. She was the sister of the late Patrick O’Handley, Robert O’Handley, Rita O’Handley and Margaret Glen.

Lt. Joseph R. Medeiros,
Newport Police Dept., Ret.
Joseph R. Mediros, 76, of Newport, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Catherine (Sologiozy) Medeiros, to whom he had been married for 53 years. Born in Portsmouth, RI on July 3, 1924, he was the son of the late Frank Medeiros-Salvador and Clara (Rose) Medeiros-Salvador.
Mr. Medeiros joined the police department in July of 1951, and worked as a police officer for the City of Newport for 35 years, retiring in 1986 as Lieutenant. In 1968, Mr. Medeiros was appointed sergeant, and in 1973 attained the rank of lieutenant. During his career he had been in charge of the juvenile department, and had served in the Internal Affairs Office and the Detective Division. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII, in the Pacific Theatre. A Veteran of the Police Relief Association, he received his degree in criminology from Salve Regina College. He also attended FBI School and Babson College to study law enforcement.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Collier of Baltimore, MD, one son, F. Steven Medeiros of Saudi Arabia, one brother, William Medeiros in Bristol, RI, one sister, Madeline Andrea of Portsmouth, RI and 4 granddaughters: Melissa, Erica, Allison and Katherine.

Anna (Gibau) Marshall
Anna (Gibau) Marshall, 86, of the John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown, RI, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, Dec 20, 2000 at John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late Arthur S. Marshall and the late Joseph David Furtado. Born in Newport, RI on Jul 17, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Marcelino and Palmiria (Corciero) Gibau.
Mrs. Marshall was a life member of ILGWU – International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and had worked as a seamstress for various mills in the Fall River, MA area. She was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Manuel Gibau, Antone Gibau, Joseph Gibau, Frank Gibau and Mary Gibau.

Joseph James Figueiredo
Joseph James Figueiredo, 70, of Newport, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Georgianna (Congdon) Figueiredo. Born in Newport, RI on Dec. 2, 1930, he was the son of the late Antonio and Mary (Silvia) Figueiredo.
Mr. Figueiredo worked as a gardener for John Nicholas Brown at Harbor Court in Newport from 1949 – 1979. He then worked for the City of Newport Public Works Department from 1979 – 1995. He was a communicant of Jesus Savior Church in Newport. Mr. Figueiredo had served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by one brother, Antonio Figueiredo of Middletown, RI, three sisters: Mary Ridle of Gloucester, VA, Helen L. Peckham and Flora C. Soares both of Middletown, RI, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother John Figueiredo and four sisters: Beatrice Rochefort, Rose Hunter, Nellie Ford, and Vina Phillips.

Edward Joseph Boucher
Edward Joseph Boucher, 83, of Portsmouth, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Hazel A. (Marshall) Boucher. Born in Springfield, MA, on Mar 21, 1917, he was the son of the late Eugene N. and Olivia (Deslauriers) Boucher.
Mr. Boucher had worked as the supervisor in the small parts department for Smith and Wesson of Springfield, MA for 25 years. He had served in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Adams in Newport, RI. Mr. and Mrs. Boucher had moved to the Portsmouth area 10 years ago, previously living in Chelsea, VT, for 20 years. In November, Mr. and Mrs. Boucher had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Portsmouth Multi Purpose Senior Center, and avid fisherman and gardener.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son Edward G. Boucher of Export, PA, one daughter Annette C. Farina of Enfield, CT, one sister Jeanette Rivers of Springfield, MA, 8 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.
•Charles Franklin Pierce
Charles Franklin Pierce, 76, of Portsmouth, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Shirley (Leach) Pierce. Born in Fall River, MA on Aug. 28, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Margaret (Fitzgerald) Pierce.
Mr. Pierce had worked as a supervisor at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station in the overhaul and repair facility, retiring in 1973. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII in the European Theatre. Mr. Pierce had been the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. Mr. Pierce was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Portsmouth Knights of Columbus Christopher Rooney Council and a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus General Rosecrans Assembly. Mr. Pierce had served on the Portsmouth Board of Canvassers and as an umpire for the Lawn Tennis Association. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed sailing and skiing.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Michael J. Pierce of Tenino, WA, Christopher C. Pierce of Newport, RI, and Peter E. Pierce of Portsmouth, RI, two daughters: Marcia J. Stone of Portsmouth, RI, and Priscilla E. Jolie of Portsmouth, RI, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. He was the brother of the late Gerald T. Lawton.

Norman Gilbert Card
Norman Gilbert Card, 74, of Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Barbara June (Orkins) Card. Born in North Kingstown, RI on Mar. 15, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles Albert and Marjorie (Greene) Card.
Mr. Card had worked as a millwright for the Newport Restoration Foundation for 22 years, retiring as the foreman of the carpentry mill department in 1991. He had also done work for Doris Duke at her estate in Newport. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII, in the European Theatre in Frankfort, Germany, retiring as Tech Sergeant. Mr. Card had belonged to the Questors of the First Presbyterian Church of Newport, and was a member of the Parkinson’s Support Group at Newport Hospital.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Catherine S. Hey of West Greenwich, RI, a brother, Robert Card of Tiverton, RI and Largo, FL, two sisters, Muriel Spence of Bristol, RI and Largo, Fl, and Phyllis Rafferty of Tiverton, RI, a granddaughter, Sandra Hey of West Greenwich, RI, and a grandson Michael Hey of West Greenwich, RI.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., in the First Presbyterian Church, corner of Broadway and Everett Street, Newport.

Margaret A. Dunn
Margaret A. Dunn, 83, of Newport, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Benjamin Francis Dunn. Born in Newport, RI on Apr. 2, 1917, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Martin) Sasse.
Mrs. Dunn was a graduate of Saint Joseph’s School in Newport. She was a parishioner of Saint Mary’s Church and also a member of the Senior Citizens Group.
She is survived by two sons: Benjamin Dunn and Joseph Dunn, both of Newport RI, five daughters: Gloria Cardoza of Newport, RI, Patricia LaFlamme of Saybrook, CT, Margaret Fastiggi of Newington, CT, Maureen White of Middletown, RI, and Elizabeth Martina Kinch of Titusville, FL, two sisters: Ruth Sullivan and Jacqueline Majoros, both of Newport, RI, 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her older sister, Elizabeth White.
Her funeral will be held Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at 8:00 a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway, Newport. Followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba’s Cemetery, Middletown.

Edward DeAscentis
Edward DeAscentis, 78, of Middletown, RI, formerly of Newport, RI, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Natalie S. (Helgeson) DeAscentis.
Born in Newport, RI on Jan. 31, 1922, he was the son of the late John and the late Juditta (Caputi) DeAscentis. Mr. DeAscentis worked as an accounting and distribution clerk with the Providence Gas Company, Newport Division, for 41 years, retiring in 1987. He had served in the Naval Reserve prior to WWII. Mr. DeAscentis had also served as a safety inspector with the Coast Guard Auxillary.
Mr. DeAscentis formed the first unit of the former Elkhart Air Squadron of Newport and had been a senior lifeguard at King’s Beach, Newport. He was a member of Trinity Church, Newport, where he had served on many boards, and participated in many activities, including organizing the Trinity Church record hops in the late 1950s.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald E. DeAscentis and Wayne F. DeAscentis, both of Middletown, RI, five brothers, Arthur DeAscentis of Newport, RI, John DeAscentis of Florida, Ettorino DeAscentis of Middletown, RI, Geno DeAscentis of Newport, RI, and Hugo DeAscentis of Newport, RI, and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Manley DeAscentis and grandfather of the late Christine DeAscentis and Richard DeAscentis.

Stephen F. Olszewski
Stephen F. Olszewski, 85, of Portsmouth, RI, died Saturday, Jan. 6 at Heatherwood Nursing And Subacute Center, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Martha Jane (Thomas) Olszewski.
Born in Newark, NJ on May 31, 1915, he was the son of the late Alexander Olszewski and the late Josephine (Wisniewska) Olszewski.
Mr. Olszewski received his secondary education from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art. He served as an A.V.A. Specialist First Class in the U.S. Navy from May 11, 1943 to Dec. 11, 1945. Mr. Olszewski was also a pharmaceutical advertising executive with Paul Klemter & Company of New York City for 30 years before retiring in 1970.
Mr. Olszewski is also a recognized artist and watercolorist, most recently serving on the board of directors of the Cape Cod Art Association; and a member, supporter and instructor at the Westport Art Group, Westport, MA. Mr. Olszewski exhibited widely throughout his long career, recently at the Providence Art Club and Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery where he presented a retrospective of his life’s work.
He is survived by two daughters, Alexandra L. Hakimdin of Portsmouth, RI and Krysia E. Robinson of New Hartford, CT, and three grandchildren.

Dr. Cyril James Allen
Dr. Cyril James Allen, 82, of 464 Third Beach Road died at home on Sunday of leukemia. He was the husband of Sandra (Barton) Allen.
Born on April 10, 1918 in New York City, he was the son of the late Arthur Allen and Margaret (Johnson) Allen. He graduated from Rogers High in 1937 and went on to Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. He received his degree in veterinary medicine in 1944 and initially practiced in Maryland and Massachusetts. He started his practice in Middletown in 1950 and for fifty years provided the essential large animal veterinary services to the island of Aquidneck. Dr. Allen started the first rabies clinic in the state of RI, with all benefits going to the Robert Potter League for animals.
He was a past member of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, where he served as Junior Warden, and was currently a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, serving as eucharistic minister and former Senior Warden. He was very active within the church and participated in all feasts and holidays.
He was a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge No. 1, Newport since May of 1984. He was actively involved in Masonry and volunteered and served on numerous committees through the years. He served as Master of the Lodge in 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1996. He also served on its board of directors. In May 1992, he received the Meritorious Service Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Rhode Island under Worshipful Master Robert Yates. He was a fifty-six year life member of the Newport Elks as well as past president of the Middletown Rotary Club. He was also a former member of the Robert Potter League for Animals. Besides his wife Sandra of 32 years, he leaves behind three children. Two of the children are Rhett Allen of Middletown, RI and Margaret Maurano of Mansfield, MA. He also leaves one granddaughter, Leah Bouch.
Fred Joseph Pine
FRED JOSEPH PINE,, who has died aged 83, worked at St. George’s School as the head chef for 38 years. He was a life member of the VFW, Middletown; he was a World War II Army Veteran serving in the Pacific Theater & Aleutian Islands. Mr. Pine retired in 1958 with 20 years of service as a Sergeant First Class, where he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan and Korea) and Bronze Star. He was the husband of Evelyn Simas Pine.
Fred Joseph Pine was born on Oct. 9, 1917 in Newport. He was the son of Frank and Mary Pine.
A resident of Tiverton, Mr. Pine died Jan. 18 at Newport Hospital. He is survived by five sons, Fred J. Pine, Jr., Leonard F. Sharp, Robert A. Sharp, Russell J. Sharp and Thomas M. Sharp; one daughter Susan R. Sharp, two brothers Frank Pine and Joseph Pine; seven sisters, Madeline Blanchard, Margaret Deese, Marion Amerson, Elsie Hicks, Rose Sawyer, Hilda Silvia, and Beatrice Paiva.
His funeral was held on Jan. 22. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
John Houlihan
JOHN DENNIS HOULIHAN, who died at age 82, worked as a master electrician for over 30 years as the owner and operator of G&H Electric Company on Broadway in Newport. He was a member of the Master Electricians Local Union, as well as a member of Hazards Beach Club and the Rotary Club. Mr. Houlihan was a World War II Army Veteran who held decorations and citations, including the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was the husband of the late Monica (Sullivan) Houlihan.
John Dennis Houlihan was born on March 26, 1918 in Newport. He was the son of Edward and Mary (Barry) Houlihan.
A resident of Newport, Mr. Houlihan died Jan. 19 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. He is survived by two sons Paul J. Houlihan of East Quogue, Long Isand, NY, Peter J. Houlihan of Newton, MA; three daughters Janice H. Rodarmor and Monica M. Houlihan, and Theresa H. Nunes; one sister, Elizabeth Dennis, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His funeral was held on Jan. 23. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetary in Middletown.
Amy Hallencrutz
AMY ALTHEA HALLENCRUTZ, who died at age 94, was a member of the former Currant Topics Club, and a member of the United Baptist Church in Newport. She was the wife of the late Rolfe Hallencrutz.
Amy Althea Howard was born on Feb. 12, 1906 in New London, CT. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Mattie (DeWolfe) Howard.
A resident of Middletown, Mrs. Hallencrutz died Jan. 19 at the John Clarke Nursing Center in Middletown. She is survived by two daughters, Gretta Crombie and Althea Gordon, six grand children, thirteen great-grandchildren, and six great great-grandchildren.
A private service was held on Jan. 23 in the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. A private burial took place in the family lot in Trinity Cemetary in Portsmouth. A memorial service will be held in the United Baptist Church at a date and time to be announced.

Volney Clarke
Volney R. Clarke, who has died aged 91, was a machinist at the Torpedo Station on Goat Island for 25 years. For many years, he also sold real estate for Ed McKinney and worked as a salesman for the former W.T. Grant’s in Newport.
He built his own sailboat, a 38-foot Double Ender he called Volanna, that appeared in many yachting magazines.
Volney R. Clarke was born in Newport on May 25, 1909. He was the son of the late Thomas Clarke and the late Carrie (Russell) Clarke.
He was the husband of Anna (Kelleyhouse) Clarke. They were married 61 years. They had a son, Volney Clarke Jr., and a daughter, Karen MacKnight.
A resident of Middletown, Mr. Clarke died Jan. 9 at Newport Hospital, Newport.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Calvary United Methodist Church, 200 Turner Road, Middletown. Burial will be private.
Dorothy Freeman
Dorothy Freeman, who has died aged 83, was a switchboard operator at the former Sears and Robuck Company in Middletown. She retired from the company in 1990 with 45 years of service.
Dorothy Freeman was born Dorothy McKale on Feb. 9, 1917 in Bristol, the daughter of the late Thomas William McKale and the late Margaret (Cruz) McKale
A resident of Middletown, Mrs. Freeman died Jan. 9 at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, RI. She was the wife of the late Ernest Freeman.
She is survived by one sister, Roberta V. Ferreira and one brother, Thomas McKale.
Her funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 13. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care of Rhode Island, 143 Main St., Wakefield, RI, 02879.
