Marjorie (Harrison) Brown, 91, of Lancaster, Pa. died of natural causes Friday, Aug. 17, at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Brown and the daughter of the late John Harrison and Lillian (Boone) Harrison of Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Underwood of Newport and Sugar Hill, N.H., three grandsons and three great-granddaughters. Burgess

Rosalie Louise (Coffee) Burgess, 76, of 22A Coddington St. in Newport, formerly of Deland, Fla. and Chapel Street in Newport, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Thomas Allen Burgess. Born in Modesto, Calif. May 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Stockard Franklin and Marie (Maderias) Coffee. She was an LPN with the Florida Visiting Nurse from 1975 to 1997. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. She is survived by her sisters Loretta Palmer of Valeho, Calif. and Elizabeth Coffee of Modesto, Calif. Clarke

Marion E. (Clarke) Clarke, 95, of 36 Prairie Ave. in Newport, died Monday, Aug. 27, at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Angus J. Clarke. Born in Newport May 23, 1906, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Sullivan) Clarke. She was a teacher with Newport Public Schools and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Rhode Island College. She also attended courses at Salve Regina University, Harvard’s Boston Extension School, Rhode Island College and Brown University. She has taught every grade from first grade through high school. While teaching English at Rogers High School, she was the first female guidance counselor for male students. She later took over as dean of discipline at Thompson Junior High School and was appointed vice principal in 1962. Clarke was selected as the city’s woman of the year by the women’s division of the Chamber of Commerce. For six years, she was state president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, where she was the first person to be elected twice. She was past president of Newport’s Quota Club, active in the Catholic Daughters of America, the Newport Hospital’s Women’s Auxiliary, the Rhode Island Guidance Counselor Association, the New England Teachers of English and the Newport County Council of Community Services. A dedicated educator who loved her students, Clarke helped them with their personal lives as well as helping them to further their education by starting funds with other teachers to help less fortunate students. Her two favorite hobbies were ceramics and knitting. She is survived by her nephew Robert Clarke Murphy of Newport, grandniece Marion August of Toronto, Canada and two great-great-nephews, Timothy August and Michael O’Dwyer. She was the sister of the late Ann Clarke Murphy and Eleanor O’Dwyer. Her funeral was held Sept. 1 at the Memorial Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary’s Church, both in Newport. DiMarzo

Stephen M. DiMarzo, 74, of 19 S. Baptist St. in Newport died Monday, Sept. 3, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Nancy M. Flint DiMarzo. Born in Newport Feb. 22, 1927, he was a son of the late Stephen and Josephine (Catalani) DiMarzo. He worked at Newport General Electric Company in Newport and Middletown for more than 29 years, retiring in 1979 as a warehouse manager. After his retirement from Newport Electric, he worked for the Cozy Cab Co. and the Vets Cab Co. in Newport. He was a graduate of the former De La Salle Academy in Newport. He was an Army veteran of World War II and had served in Europe. He was a member of the Humane Society. He is survived by his sons, Stephen M. DiMarzo, Jr. of Rochester, Mass., Ralph M. DiMarzo, Robert W. DiMarzo, Jeffrey M. DiMarzo, all of Newport, Michael S. DiMarzo of Erie, Pa. and Peter M. DiMarzo of Tiverton, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ralph DiMarco. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street in Newport. Guillemette

Carolyn (Perry) Guillemette, 72, of 60 King Philip St. in Portsmouth, formerly of Tiverton, died Saturday, Aug. 18 at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Mass. She was the wife of the late Roger P. Guillemette. Born in Fall River Jan. 10, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Gaston and Edwina (Perry) Catalan. She had resided in Tiverton for 44 years before returning to Portsmouth two years ago. Educated in the Portsmouth school system, she was a graduate of Thibodeau’s Business College in Fall River and served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. She was an accredited medical record technician, serving as director of medical records at St. Anne’s Hospital until her retirement in 1989. She is survived by her sons Roger and Gerard Guillemette, both of Tiverton; daughter Ann Marie Tobin of Portsmouth; brothers Richard Catalan of Portsmouth, Roger Catalan of Portsmouth, David Catalan of Bristol, Thomas Catalan of Florida and Gaston Catalan of Manhattan, Kan.; sisters Evelyn Green of Inglewood, Calif., Virginia Apps of Portsmouth and Christine Buskirk of North Carolina; and two grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Alfred Catalan. Her funeral was held Aug. 22 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Christopher’s Church in Tiverton. Murphy

Edward J. Murphy, 84, of 22 Simmons St. in Newport died Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport. He was the husband of Agnes M. (Mattos) Murphy. Born in Newport June 14, 1917, he was a son of the late Edward A. and Mary (Gully) Murphy. He worked as a heavy equipment operator at the Naval Underwater Ordnance in Newport for more than 35 years, retiring in 1974. He served in the U.S. Army air force during World War II as a radio operator and was in communications. He served in the European theater and was in the D-Day invasion. A parishioner of St. Augustin Church in Newport, Murphy was a member of Newport Knights of Columbus Council 256, the Newport V.F.W., AARP and the AARF. He is survived by his wife, nephews John W. Nelson, III of Newport, Thomas J. Brophy, Jr. of Bristol, Conn., Wayne Palmer of Ashaway, niece Ann Palmer Anyzewski of Ashaway and many grandnieces and nephews. He was the uncle of Caroline T. North and brother of the late Thomas J. Brothy, Sr., Caroline Nelson and Elizabeth Palmer. His funeral was held Sept. 5 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Augustin Church. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Ormerod

Henry Ormerod, 88, of 61 Cedar Ave. in Portsmouth died Tuesday, Aug. 28, at home. He was the husband of Marion (Ibbotson) Ormerod. Born in Nelson, England Feb. 11, 1913, he was the son of the late Horace F. and Jane (Holland) Ormerod. He worked for 30 years as a machine operator in the textile mills in Fall River, Mass. He then went on to work for another 30 years at the Newport Naval Base in the maintenance department. He is survived by his wife, daughter Carol A. Reid of Tiverton, granddaughter Wendy LaPointe of Swansea, Mass., grandson Wayne Reid of Fall River, Mass., great-granddaughter Stephanie Lewis of Swansea, Mass. and great-grandson Joshua LaPointe of Swansea, Mass. His funeral was held Aug. 31 in Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Burial was in Pocassett Hill Cemetery in Tiverton. Patrick

Edith M. (Dorling) Townsend Patrick, 87, of 21801 Canyon Drive in Windomar, Calif. died Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, Mass. She was the wife of the late John A. Townsend and the late Wilbur Patrick. Born in Sudbury, Ontario Nov. 30, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Florence (Gladwin) Dorling. She moved to Detroit, Mich. as a young child and then to the Port Huron area in 1949, where she made her home until retiring from the Woolworth Company after 30 years of working as a personnel supervisor. After her retirement in 1982, she moved to California. She is survived by her son Rev. John Townsend of Portsmouth, pastor of the Community Christ Church in Tiverton, daughters Marian (Bugg) Seguin of Brooksville, Fla., Jacqueline (Ledsworth) Cline of Drummond, Wis. and Barbara Helm of Widomar, Calif., sister Gladys McLeod of Roseville, Mich., 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Perry

Muriel Ruth (Schultz) Perry, 77, of 11 Aquidneck Drive in Middletown, died Saturday, Aug. 18, at home. She was the wife of the late John Perry. Born in Worchester, Mass. Dec. 25, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Gertrude (MacDonald) Schultz. She worked at the former Torpedo Station during World War II and was a 1941 graduate of Rogers High School. She is survived by her son Donald B. Perry of Middletown, sister Irene Johnson of Middletown, a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Manuel Riley.

Simpson

Alice P. (Padykula) Simpson, 77, of 5 Sachuest Drive in Middletown died Monday, Sept. 3, at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of Walter J. Simpson, Sr. Born in Central Falls July 24, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Jon and Mary (Midura) Padykula. She had been the owner and operator of the former Alice P. Simpson Antiques on Franklin Street in Newport for 30 years, retiring in 1998. Prior to her antique store, she had worked as the assistant to the librarian at the Middletown Public Library for 12 years. She had also worked as a medical stenographer at the Pawtucket Memorial Hospital during World War II. She was a communicant of St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown. Simpson was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America and a member of the Newport Antiques Dealers Association. She had also served as the treasurer for the Women’s Democratic Committee and on the advisory committee at Gaudet Junior High School in Middletown. She is survived by her husband, sons Brian Patrick Simpson of West Warwick and Walter J. Simpson, Jr. of Carlsbad, Calif., five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Dr. Stanley Padykula and Stasia Caronia. Funeral services will be held at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road in Middletown. Louise Sherman

Louise Sherman, 89, of 68 Third St. in Newport died Monday, Sept. 3 at Village House in Newport. She was the wife of the late Clifford H. Sherman. Born in Gull Rock Cottage on Van Zandt Avenue in Newport July 29, 1912, she was a Real Point Hummer and the daughter of the late Charles F. and Helen B. Child. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1932. She was a member of the Newport Historical Society, a charter member of the Point Association and was a contributing writer to the Green Light (the Point Association’s newsletter). She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Church in Newport and a member of Friends of the Waterfront and Friends of Rose Island Lighthouse. She is survived by her son W. Glenn Sherman of Newport, grandsons Steven A. Sherman and Clifford P. Sherman, granddaughters Laura Ferreira and Patience G. Sherman, three great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and many friends. Her funeral was held Sept. 8 at the Memorial Funeral Home, with a Requiem Mass in St. John’s Church. Adeline Smales

Adeline (Germershausen) Smales, 100, of John Clarke Nursing Home in Middletown, formerly of Ashurst Avenue in Middletown, died Wednesday, Sept. 5 at John Clarke Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Holbert T. Smales. Born in Providence Nov. 4, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Grace (Douglas) Germershausen. She was a homemaker. She moved to Newport in 1930 and to Middletown in 1938. She and her husband spend 35 years wintering in Florida, returning to Middletown permanently in 1984. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Newport Hospital, the Middletown Garden Club, the United Congregational Church in Middletown and the Preservation Society of Newport County. She is survived by her son Robert T. Smales of Topsfield, Mass., daughter Betty Young of Seekonk, Mass., nephew Raymond Germershausen of Barrington, seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held Sept. 10 in Hambly Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in St. Mary’s Churchyard in Portsmouth.

Anna E. Soucie

Anna E. (Gramolini) Soucie, 75, of 12 Soares Drive in Portsmouth, formerly of Bay View Park in Middletown and Braman Street in Newport, died Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Samuel E. Soucie. Born in Newport Oct. 5, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Elisa (Baldini) Gramolini. She worked at the Naval Exchange as a clerk for 25 years, retiring in 1975. She was active in the PTA at St. Catherine’s Church and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church. She is survived by her daughter Ann Marie Bernt of North Kingstown, son Paul R. Soucie of Portsmouth and two grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Everett Gramolini and Sylvia Goode. Her funeral was held Sept. 7 at the Memorial Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, both in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.

Robert Charles Dallery
Robert C. Dallery of 1215 Main Road, Tiverton, formerly of Montclair, N.J. died Sept. 10 at home. He was the husband of Betty Sholl Dallery.Born Aug. 18, 1908, in East Orange, N.J., he was the son of the late Emily L. and Francis E. Dallery and had lived in New Jersey most of his life. He attended New York University and was a graduate of the advanced management program of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business.

for Robert C. Dallery of 1215 Main Road, Tiverton, husband of Betty S. Dallery, will take place Friday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at Sakonnet Bay Manor, 1215 Main Road, Tiverton. The service will be led by Rev. Amy Freedman, minister of Channing Memorial Church, Newport.

Readings and remarks will be given by Mr. Dallery’s children, June Doolittle and Carleton Dallery, and by grandchildren Andrew and John Doolittle and Jesse and Jennie Dallery. Solos will be sung by granddaughter Lauren Doolittle and by Rose Cantin, one of Mr. Dallery’s caregivers at Sakonnet Bay Manor.

A reception will follow at Sakonnet Bay Manor.

Regina Buford

Regina L. (Lynch) Buford, 98, of 85 Wilkey Ave. in Portsmouth, where she resided with Virginia and Dennis Marten, died Sunday, Sept. 16 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Edward H. Buford. Born in Newport Aug. 16, 1903, she was the daughter of the late Henry G. and Helen J. (Kirby) Lynch. She was a 1921 graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Providence and had been class president. She moved to New York City, where she worked at Morrisania City Hospital for 37 years as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1958. She had received numerous letters of recommendations during her working career from various doctors. She was an avid golfer and had belonged to various golf clubs in Venice, Fla. She enjoyed traveling. She is survived by her sister, Claire Venturi of Venice, Fla.; nephews Frederick Michels of Arlington, Va. and Blake Lynch of Vail, Colo.; nieces Joanne Murphy of Naples, Fla., Helen McLyman of Portsmouth, Roberta Pierson of Middletown and Barbara Venturi of Bern, N.C.; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was the sister of the late Helen Michels, Louise Jones, Henry Lynch and Joseph Lynch. A memorial service will be held Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, East Main Road in Portsmouth and burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Elizabeth Capron

Elizabeth Baldwin (Taylor) Capron, 89, of 600 Valley Road in Middletown, formerly of West House on Forest Avenue in Middletown, died Monday, Sept. 10 at John Clarke Nursing Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Robert Capron. Born in Newport Sept. 29, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Alice (Baldwin) Taylor. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church. She is survived by her grandchildren Deborah Jourabchi of Warwick, Robert Jordan of Cape Coral, Fla. and Barbara Jordan of Newport and her great-grandchildren Krista Batchlor of Virginia Beach, Va., Dana Williams and Holly Williams, both of Newport. Her funeral was held Sept. 14 at the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport and burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Mary Levesque

Former State Representative Mary Elizabeth Levesque, 49, of 1 Sail St. in Jamestown died Sept. 17 at Newport Hospital. Born in Portsmouth Aug. 10, 1952, she was the daughter of Anna Doyle Levesque and the late Thomas B. Levesque. Elected to the R.I. House of Representatives in 1988, she served the 98th District (Jamestown-Newport) until leaving office in 1996. She served on the Health, Education and Welfare Committee, the Judiciary Committee and the Labor Committee and was the prime sponsor of legislation that required health insurers to cover the costs of in-vitro fertilization, assisting hundreds of Rhode Islanders create families. Levesque was recognized as the Civil Libertarian of the Year by the R.I. chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1996 and was the recipient of the 1997 Community Service award by the Newport chapter of the NAACP. She later served on the board of directors of the ACLU. She was a member of the board of directors of the Newport County branch of the NAACP, a member of the board of directors of Planned Parenthood Votes and a member of the Jamestown Community Chorus. She lived in Portsmouth until moving to Jamestown in 1980. She was an attorney, admitted to practice before the Rhode Island and Federal bars in 1978. She practiced 23 years as an attorney in the state: one year as a volunteer in service to America, seven years as an assistant public defender and 15 years in private practice, originally with her father, Thomas, and brother, Charles. She was a member of the Rhode Island, Newport and Portsmouth bar associations. She is survived by her mother; brothers Thomas Levesque, Ernest Levesque, former state Representative George Levesque and state Representative Charles Levesque; sister-in-law Susan Levesque; nephew Thomas H. Levesque, III; niece Michelle Levesque; and her extended family, Paula Rosen, David Pritchard and Evan and Leah Rosen Pritchard. She was a graduate of St. Anthony’s Elementary School in Portsmouth, Portsmouth High School, Wilmington College and Washington University School of Law. Her funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21 from Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road in Portsmouth. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 at Connors Funeral Home. Friends and relatives are invited. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Portsmouth. Cintra Ellis Carter

Cintra Ellis Carter, 36, died suddenly in Bali, Indonesia July 31. She graduated from the Hill School in Middleburg, Va. and the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. and attended Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Conn. She was a graduate of Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland. After college she worked for the late Italian fashion designer Versace in Milan, Italy. Upon returning to Washington, she worked for Benetton, Ltd. and as a marketing representative for La Perla, Inc. She moved to San Francisco to continue fashion and jewelry design before moving to Bali, where she had her own design business. She is survived by her mother Joy Carter Sundlun of Washington, and brother Michael Rudulph Ellis Carter of Wilmette, Ill. A memorial service was held Sept. 16 at St. Columba’s Chapel in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Cintra Ellis Carter trust fund c/o the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, 2841 Illinois Road, Wilmette, IL 60091. The fund supports the diagnosis and treatment of depression and other mental illnesses in children and adolescents.

Michael Simmons

Michael Stephen Simmons, 33, of 57 Perry Ave. in Middletown died Sunday, Sept. 16 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Lisa (Smith) Simmons. Born in Newport Oct. 16, 1967, he was the son of Stephen N. Simmons of Newport and Susan (Clifford) Brackett of Castle Valley, Utah. He most recently worked as a chef at KJ’s Pub on Aquidneck Avenue. Prior to that he was owner and operator of Fred’s Old Place on Thames Street and worked at the Pier Restaurant. He was a 1985 graduate of Rogers High School and played Little League baseball in the Fifth Ward, winning many awards. He played on the Jimmy’s Saloon men’s softball team, was an avid saltwater fisherman and enjoyed golf and skiing. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. He is survived by his wife; parents; daughters Amber Rose, Jesse Sue and Chloe Karen Simmons, all of Middletown; brother David Paul Simmons of Silt, Colo.; and sisters Christine Wight of Vail, Colo. and Stacey A. Simmons of Breckenridge, Colo. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 22 at St. John the Evangelist, 61 Poplar St. in Newport. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Tiverton.

Margaret Silvia

Margaret (Perry) Silvia, 85, of 484 East Main Road in Middletown, formerly of Chases Lane, Middletown, died in a tragic accident Sunday, Sept. 16. She was the wife of the late George B. Silvia. Born in Middletown Jan. 4, 1916, she lived her entire life there. She was the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Emilia (Dennis) Perry. She was a communicant at Jesus Saviour Church, Newport, and was a member of the Rosary Sodality Civic League. She is survived by three sons, George L. Silvia and Raymond R. Silvia both of Middletown, and Anthony B. Silvia of The Villages, Fla.; three daughters Marie Lavault of Middletown, Peg Buchan of Taftville, Conn, Toni "Cookie" Silvia of Lebanon, Conn.; two brothers Raymond and George Silvia, both of Middletown; 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late John J. Silvia, sister of the late Joseph P. Silvia, Louis P. Silvia, Manuel P. Silvia, John P. Silvia, Rose Roderick, Emily Parkurst, Evelyn Perry, and the grandmother of the late Anthony Silvia. Her funeral will be held Thursday, Sept., 20, at 8 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbia Cemetery in Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to the Middletown Rescue Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI, 02842.

Arruda

John Sebastian Arruda, 83, of 24 Paquin Place in Middletown died Saturday, Sept. 22 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Helen (Styczenski) Arruda. Born in Fall River, Mass. June 1, 1918, he was the son of the late John S. and Marianna (Pacheco) Arruda. He worked as a cook in the food services division at NETC, Newport for 20 years, retiring in 1987. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the European theater, and received the Bronze Star. After retiring from the Army, he worked at the former Rhode Island Lunch and the former Tony’s Diner and at other various restaurants in the Newport area. He was a communicant at St. Lucy’s Church. He was an avid bowler and belonged to the Kolo Grotto team and won numerous awards in the area. Arruda and his wife were married June 6, 1942, and celebrated 59 years of marriage in June. He is survived by his wife; son James Arruda of Carmel, Ind.; daughter Carol Rosa of Portsmouth; brothers Armand S. Arruda of Riverside and Louis S. Arruda of Winter Haven, Fla.; sisters Georgianna Thibeault of Fall River, Mass., Theresa Felteau of Hobe Sound, Fla., Helen Dias of Hobe Sound, Fla. and Beatrice Cabral of Tiverton; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel S. Arruda, Joseph S. Arruda, Antone S. Arruda, Mary Zurowski and Marianna McCarthy. Funeral services were held Sept. 26 at Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy’s Church. Burial was at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Ebbitt

Paul F. Ebbitt, 89, of Blenheim-Newport, formerly of 26 Kay Blvd. in Newport, died Saturday, Sept. 22 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Thelma H. Ebbitt. Born in Newport Oct. 23, 1911, he was the son of the late W. Frank and Bernice (Ailman) Ebbitt. He was a direct descendant of Nicholas Easton, one of the original settlers of Newport. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1930 and was awarded the Latin medal. His Latin classes at Rogers led him to a lifelong interest in Roman civilization. He received a bachelor’s degree in English literature with honors from Dartmouth College in 1934 and began a 36-year teaching career in the English department at Rogers. He had a lifetime membership in the Rogers High School Alumni Association. He was a member of several organizations, including various retired teachers groups, the Preservation Society of Newport County, Newport Art Museum, Newport Historical Society, Norman Bird Sanctuary and Save The Bay. Music, art and literature were sustaining joys in his life. He played the piano every day, drew and read with pleasure. He is survived by his wife; son Hugh A. Ebbitt of Middletown; daughters Karen Steers Ebbitt and Paula F. Ebbitt, both of Cambridge, Mass.; brother David R. Ebbitt of Portsmouth; daughter-in-law Irene Ebbitt of Middletown; and two granddaughters, Michala A. and Kristina L. Ebbitt, both of Middletown. A memorial service will be held at Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Ave. in Newport, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. Friends are welcome to attend.

Bernard Ebbitt

Bernard "Bernie" J. Ebbitt, 80, of 34 Child St. in Portsmouth died Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Newport Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of A. Ruth (Silvia) Ebbitt. Born in Newport Aug. 26, 1921, he was the son of the late William J. and Anna Maude (Wilson) Ebbitt.

Mr. Ebbitt was a firefighter with the Newport Fire Department, where he served for 28 years before retiring in 1983. Twelve of those years were spent on the rescue wagon. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a cook and truck driver. His battles and campaigns included Tunisia, Italy, southern France, Rhineland and North Africa. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Award. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Retired Newport Firefighters Association. He was a previous parishioner of St. Augustin Church and a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth.

Mr. Ebbitt also worked at the Railway Express Company as a truck driver, the Newport Naval Training Station as a greenhouse manager, as a courier for the People’s Credit Union and as a part-time handyman at Saccucci Lincoln Mercury and the former Nunes of Newport car dealerships. In his youth, he was a caddy at the Newport Country Club. He was a 1940 graduate of the former De La Salle Academy in Newport.

He is survived by his wife, son Bernard E. Ebbitt of Bristol, daughters Deborah S. (Ebbitt) McCarthy of Tiverton and Mary Ann Ebbitt of Portsmouth and granddaughters Kelsey Ebbitt McCarthy and Ariel Ebbitt McCarthy, both of Tiverton. He was the brother of the late John J. Ebbitt, Sister Monica Ebbitt, Anna L. Ebbitt, Jennie T. Ebbitt, Marion Smethurst, Margaret "Peggy" Concanon, Richard T. Ebbitt, William A. Ebbitt and Edward Ebbitt.

His funeral was held Oct. 6 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Newport Fire Department Rescue Fund.

Charles Chaves

Charles Andrew Chaves, 18, of 43 Vanicek Ave. in Middletown died Thursday, Oct. 4 in Plymouth, N.H. Born in Newport July 20, 1983, he was the son of James A. and Linda (Marques) Chaves.

Mr. Chaves graduated from Middletown High School in 2001. During his high school years, he was an outstanding football player. In his junior year, he was selected for the second team all division and in his senior year he was the captain of the football team and was presented with the Rhode Island Coaches All Division Award. Most recently, he was attending Plymouth State College, majoring in computer science.

He is survived by his parents, brother James M. Chaves of Middletown, sister Janelle G. Chaves of Middletown and grandparents Anne M. Chaves of Portsmouth, Agnes Marques of Middletown and Charles and Eileen Raposa of Portsmouth.

His funeral was held Oct. 9 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown. Burial was at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.

Mary Peideia

Mary (Lima) Peideia, 90, of 2704 East Main Road in Portsmouth died Monday, Oct. 8 at the Village House Nursing Center on Harrison Avenue in Newport. She was the wife of the late Manuel A. Peideia, Jr. Born in Sao Miguel, Azores March 13, 1911, she was the daughter of the late August and Maria Lima.

Mrs. Peideia had worked as a manager for the former Portsmouth branch of Goodwill Cleaners for 35 years, retiring in 1982. She had also worked as a clerk at the former Chase’s of Portsmouth, a grocery store, and the former McWhirr’s of Fall River, a ladies apparel store. She was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth, where she was also a member of the Catholic Women’s Club. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in her yard.

She is survived by her son Robert A. Peideia of Portsmouth, sister Rita Clark of Warwick, three grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was the sister of the late Manuel Lima and Macy Lima.

Her funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 11 at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, 2836 East Main Road in Portsmouth. Burial will take place at Notre Dame cemetery in Fall River, Mass. Donation in her memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Catherine Cleary Toracinta

Catherine Cleary Toracinta, 98, of 309 Spring St. in Newport, formerly of 135 Ruggles Ave. in Newport, died Friday, Sept. 28 at the St. Clare Home on Spring Street. She was the wife of the late Charles D. Toracinta. Born in Newport Aug. 12, 1903, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Catherine Martin Cleary.

Mrs. Toracinta was a communicant of St. Augustin Church in Newport and a longtime member of Gooseberry Beach. She also served on the De La Salle Mothers Club and as a young lady was active in church organizations.

She is survived by her son Charles D. Toracinta, Jr. of Newport, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Donald J. Toracinta and the sister of the late Nellie Silvia, Anna Cleary, Mary Lawton, Christina Cleary, Theresa Cleary and Emily Ryan.

Her funeral was held Oct. 1 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Augustin Church in Newport. Burial was at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840.

Edna Vieira

Edna F. Vieira, 64, of 80 William St. in Portsmouth died Friday, Oct. 5 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Jesse J. Vieira. Born in Newport Aug. 18, 1937, she was the daughter of Mary (Vieira) Flowers of Newport and the late Frank Flowers.

Mrs. Vieira was self-employed, working in the family business in Portsmouth, and was an avid antique collector.

She is survived by her mother, husband, sons Steve Vieira of Philadelphia, Pa., and Gary Vieira of Tiverton, daughter Denise Meikle of Portsmouth, and grandsons Jesse Dufault and Michael Vieira, both of Portsmouth.

Her funeral was held Oct. 10 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Jesus Saviour Church in Newport. Burial was at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Jacqueline Wheeler

Jacqueline (Lawrence) Wheeler, 65, of 84A Unity Drive in Middletown died Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. She was the wife of John B. Wheeler. Born in Newport Sept. 9, 1936, she was the daughter of Graziella (Nevieu) Lawrence of Newport and the late William G. Lawrence.

She had worked as a housekeeper with the former Spindrift, the Naval Hospital and the moral, welfare and recreation department at NETC. She also enjoyed gardening in her yard at home.

She is survived by her husband, mother, son Marvin Latimer of Newport, daughter Dr. Toni Ellis of Fairhope, Ala., brother William Lawrence of Portsmouth, sister Barbara DeVeau of Newport, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Gerald Latimer and sister of the late Faith Unger.

Funeral services and burial were private. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852-9813.

Lema

Anna Marie Lema, 66, of 493 Turnpike Ave. in Portsmouth died Monday, Sept. 24 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of John R. Lema. Born in Newport, Jan. 23, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Manuel Gomes and Ezara (Peters) Gomes. She was a member of St. Barnabas Church. She loved her family and enjoyed baking and making Christmas decorations for them. She is survived by her husband; daughters Janet Ferreira of Warren, Cheryl Tedesco of Tiverton and Donna Morrel of Portsmouth; sister Joanne Benner of Middletown; and three grandchildren. Her funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. Burial will be at Portsmouth Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Portsmouth Ambulance Fund, 2300 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Anita Ims

Anita (Kristiansen) Ims, 64, of Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth died Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of J. Robert Ims. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, May 24, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Sejr and Carla (Jensen) Kristiansen. She was a dancer, winning the European championship for jitterbug in 1956. She came to the United States when she was 19 years old and married her husband in 1962. She and her husband raised four children while residing on Aquidneck Island. Her volunteer services spanned from duties at the Adult Corrections Institute in the 1970s to serving at Blithewold Mansion until recently. She was also an entrepreneur in the 1980s and voted Small Business Woman of the Year in 1988. She is survived by her husband; sons Jerry Ims of Portsmouth, Paul Ims of Warwick and Thomas Ims of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter Desiree DeAcentis of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters Berte Goldenbaum and Linda Anderson, both of Copenhagen, Denmark; and five grandchildren Skyler, Jessica, Eric, Christina and Anthony. A memorial service was held Sept. 28 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. Donations in her memory may be made to the Portsmouth Ambulance Fund, 2300 East Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Cynthia Martucci

Cynthia Angel Martucci, 38, of 36 Chapel Terrace in Newport, formerly of Portsmouth, died Friday, Sept. 28 at Newport Hospital. Born in Brunswick, Ga., July 12, 1963, she was the daughter of Victor Martucci and the late Laverne Joyce Martucci. She was employed at Dunkin Donuts, Dragon Express and Xtra Mart. She is survived by her father, daughter Cyrinda Martucci of Newport, brothers Larry and Jerome Martucci, both of Portsmouth and grandson Caden Blaze Jolcimat. Funeral services were held Oct. 3 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial will be private.

Mildred Grinnell

Mildred Ann (Gladding) Grinnell, 83, of 333 Green End Ave., Middletown, fomerly of 5 Friendship Place, Newport for 52 years, died Monday, Oct. 1, at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown.

She was the wife of the late Clairmont Livesey Grinnell. Born in Jamestown on Oct. 31, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Severance) Gladding.

Mrs. Grinnell worked as a private hairdresser during the ’50s and ’60s. She was a former member of the Woman’s Republic Club and a former Cub Scout Den leader for the club pack at Trinity Church. She loved painting, gardening and knitting for her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons Ronald Grinnell of Middletown, David Grinnell and Roger Grinnell both of Portsmouth; and a sister Alice Miller of Ohio; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held Friday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Jeffrey Doucet

Jeffrey K. Doucet, 31, of 150 Natick Ave. in Cranston died Monday, Oct. 15 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Born in Newport Oct. 15, 1970, he was the son of Donald and Suzanne (Beaudet) Doucet, both of Portsmouth.

Mr. Doucet had been a volunteer for many charity groups, including the Meals on Wheels program. He ran honor snack system displays in many local businesses. He also attended ceramics workshops at the Rhode Island School of Design.

He is survived by his parents, brother Jeremy Doucet of North Kingstown and sister Jennifer Doucet of Portsmouth.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19 at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will take place at Trinity Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Special Fund, c/o West Bay Residential Services, 158 Knight St., Warwick, RI 02886.

Elizabeth Fulk

Elizabeth Fulk, 84, of 57 Warren Ave. in Middletown, formerly of 5 White St. in Newport, died Saturday, Oct. 13 at home. She was the wife of the late Grover Stevenson Fulk. Born in Glasgow, Scotland Jan. 6, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William and the late Jeanie (Simms) MacKinnon.

Before coming to America, Mrs. Fulk worked in England as a bus conductor. She was a cook for the Newport school department at the Coggeshall School for 18 years. Mrs. Fulk was a sun worshiper who went to the beach every day in the summer. She was an avid duckpin bowler and a diehard Boston Red Sox fan.

She is survived by her son William S. Fulk of Warrensburg, Mo.; daughters Marion J. Crutchfield of Knob Noster, Mo., and Deborah Smith of Newport; brothers Neil MacKinnon of Glasgow, Scotland and Graham MacKinnon of Canada; sister Danetta Poole of Collingwood, Ontario; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Robert A. Fulk and sister of the late William MacKinnon and Margaret Russell.

Her funeral was held Oct. 17 at the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport and burial was at Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.

Donations in her memory may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol counties’ Hospice Unit, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
