Mary Barter
Mary Clare Barter, 90, of the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, formerly of Bateman Avenue and Coggeshall Avenue in Newport, died Monday, Nov. 19 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center. Born in Newport Feb. 14, 1911, she was the daughter of the late William F. Lonergan and Mary A. Hayes.
Mrs. Barter was an honorary member of the Newport Yacht Club and a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
She is survived by her daughters Elaine C. Hunt of Jamestown and Pamela A. Grant of Newport, sister Frances P. Leber of Newport, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late James W. Barter and the sister of the late Elizabeth L. Butler and Honora A. Johnson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 21 at St. Augustin Church in Newport. Burial was in Middletown Cemetery. Jose "Joe" Calma
Jose Pantaleon "Joe" Calma, Jr., 52, of Woolsey Road in Middletown, formerly of 4 Russell Ave. in Newport, died Friday, Nov. 23 at home. He was the husband of Louise Elizabeth (Oxx) Calma. Born in the Philippines April 15, 1949, he was the son of Feliza (Pantaleon) Calma of the Philippines and the late Jose Calma, Sr.
Mr. Calma was in the U.S. Navy for 23 years, retiring in 1989. After his retirement, he worked for Grand Islander Health Care Center as a head cook for 12 years. He was a member of St. Lucy’s Church and an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Melinda Catherine Calma DoCouto of Pawtucket, Teresita Francie Clay of Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and Elizabeth Grace Harkin of Middletown, brother Medy Calma of the Philippines, sisters Francie Medrano and Josie Capili, both of the Philippines, and seven grandchildren.
His funeral was held Nov. 28 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport followed by a Liturgy of the Word at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Sally Kravetz
Sally Kravetz, 84, formerly of Champlin Place in Newport, died Monday, Nov. 19 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. She was the wife of the late Samuel Kravetz. Born in Fall River, Mass., Feb. 16, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Jennie (Schwartz) Weingard.
Mrs. Kravetz worked for many years as a bookkeeper at the Newport Daily News. She had also worked at the former Grazo’s Clothing Store in Newport. She was a member of Touro Synagogue and Hadassah.
She is survived by her son Moishe Kravetz of Ramat Shlomo, Jerusalem, Israel, brother Samuel Weingard of Phoenix, Ariz., and 10 grandchildren.
Her funeral was held Nov. 21 at Beth Olam Cemetery in Middletown.
Raymond Raiche
Raymond A. Raiche, 78, of Sullivan Street in Newport died Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Joyce R. Samson Raiche. Born in Westport, Mass., Sept. 3, 1923, he was the son of the late Jules and Maria (Corriveau) Raiche.
An accountant for more than 46 years, Mr. Raiche was a principal owner of the Hoff, Raiche and Koziara company in Newport. A graduate of Provost High School in Fall River, Mass., and Bryant College, he served in the Air Force during World War II. He was a parishioner of St. Augustin Church in Newport, where he was a trustee, usher, church auditor and a member of the church council. Mr. Raiche was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Rhode Island Society of Certified Public Accountants. He was an avid gardener and sailor.
He is survived by his wife, sons Raymond A. Raiche Jr. of Worcester, Mass., Roger E. Raiche of Berkeley, Calif., Russell T. Raiche of Rehoboth, Mass., and Ronald G. Raiche of Tacoma, Wash., daughter Janet Raiche-Perper of Tiburon, Calif., brothers Maurice Raiche and Armand Raiche, both of Fall River, sisters Irma Gowing of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Yvette Raiche of Lowell, Mass., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Germaine Raiche, Alban Raiche and Edward Charles Raiche.
His funeral was held Nov. 24 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Augustin Church in Newport. Burial was private. Brigid Erin Kelly, 20
Brigid Erin Kelly, 20, of Norman Street in Newport died Saturday morning in South Kingstown. Born in Newport Nov. 18, 1981, she was the daughter of Christopher W. Kelly and Ellen M. (Buckley) Kelly of Newport.
A 1999 graduate of Rogers High School, Miss Kelly was a student at Salve Regina University in Newport. She was a National Honor Society member, receiving the Light of Character Award and the National Society Award for French. While at Rogers, she was on the girls track team, the performing dance team and was a cheerleader. She was employed by The Gap in Newport and had worked for Tom McGrath Clambake Company in Newport. She was an award winner for Irish step dancing with the Nevins Academy and more recently was the Rogers High School cheerleading coach. She was a parishioner of St. Augustin Church in Newport and the church’s first female altar server.
She is survived by her parents, sister Elise Anne Kelly of Newport, maternal grandparents Wilfred and Pauline Buckley of Newport, paternal grandmother Theresa M. Kelly of Newport and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was the granddaughter of the late John F. Kelly and the late Alfred Amaral.

Dolores "Laurie" Connell
Dolores "Laurie" Connell, 44, of Festival Field in Newport died Monday, Dec. 3 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport July 7, 1957, she was the daughter of Donn S. and Dolores P. (Mello) Connell of Newport.
Ms. Connell was a bartender with the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 19. Prior to that, she worked at Raytheon in Portsmouth from 1980 to 1990. She was a 1975 graduate of Middletown High School and a 1979 graduate of the Executive Secretary School. She attended Anna Maria College in Worcester, Mass., and Rhode Island College in Providence. She was a member of the Newport Sportsman Club and an associate member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 19. She earned her first jump wings as a parachutist.
She is survived by her parents, daughters Jennifer C. Connell and Melissa P. Connell, both of Newport, brother James T. Connell of Portsmouth, sisters Anita C. Gifford and Lisa Connell, both of Newport, two grandchildren, companion William Kenney, with whom she lived, and special friend Ralph Schaeffer.

Robert Hedly
Robert G. "Bob" Hedly, 61, of Casey Drive in Middletown died Thursday, Nov. 29 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Nancy (Sargent) Hedly of Middletown. Born in Hartford, Conn., Nov. 10, 1940, he was the son of the late Thomas and Alice (Allinson) Hedly.
Mr. Hedly worked for the Newport Public Schools as a maintenance supervisor for 33 years at Thompson Middle School. He also worked for 10 years as a special officer for the Middletown Police Department and part time for Valley View Motors in Portsmouth. He was a member of the Mason’s Lodge in Portsmouth, the Elks Lodge in Newport, the Odd Fellows Lodge of Portsmouth and the United Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and helped with youth groups. He was an avid camper, enjoying trips to New Hampshire and Hopkinton.
He is survived by his wife, sons Robert G. Hedly, Jr. of Narragansett and Todd L.T. Hedly of Manchester, N.H., brother Thomas Hedly of Portsmouth, grandson London Hedly of Manchester, N.H., and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Van Camp
Mary (Graeber) Van Camp, 43, of Keeher Avenue in Newport died Monday, Dec. 3 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Dee Kevin Van Camp. Born in Decator, Ala., July 9, 1958, she was the daughter of the late Carl Mathew Graeber and Helen (Horn) Graeber of Newport.
Mrs. Van Camp was a graphics manager with Purvis Systems in Middletown for 15 years. She was a 1980 graduate of the University of Rhode Island.
She is survived by her husband, mother, brothers C. Thomas Graeber of Rehoboth, Mass., and Geoffrey L. Graeber of Newport, sisters Leonora K. Friend of Newport and Annamarie G. Shea of West Kingston and nine nieces and nephews.

Mary Lee Zeller
Mary Lee (Harris) Zeller, 64, of Middle Road in Portsmouth, formerly of Curry Avenue in Newport, died Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport May 15, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Robert Allen and Alice R. (Murray) Harris.
Mrs. Zeller had worked at Newport Hospital in the admissions department beginning in 1972, and then in the settlements department at the Lifespan Corporation in Providence.
She is survived by her sons Patrick O’Donnell and Robert Zeller, both of Newport, daughters Kathleen O’Donnell, Nancy Shaw and Sheila Benevides, all of Newport, brother Robert Harris of Orlando, Fla., eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Joan McFadden.

Barbara Buresh
Barbara Ann (Medeiros) Buresh, 61, of Gould Street in Newport, formerly of Orchard Avenue in Middletown, died Monday, Dec. 10 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Horst R. Buresh. Born in Newport June 20, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Pomelek) Medeiros.
She is survived by her husband, son Michael J. Buresh of Chicago, Ill., daughter Cynthia A. Buresh of Providence, brother Michael Medeiros of Portsmouth, granddaughter Lydia Dubois of Providence, one niece and one nephew.

James Fagan, Jr.
James Philip Fagan, Jr., 79, of Wedgewood Drive in Middletown died Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret (Peggy) Sullivan Fagan. Born in Newport April 22, 1922, he was the son of the late James and Elizabeth (Vaughan) Fagan.
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Fagan served in the European Theater as a first sergeant of field artillery participating in the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a 1940 graduate of Rogers High School and 1978 graduate of Roger Williams University, where he received cum laude degrees in psychology and social and health services. He worked as a counselor at Newport Hospital and at Edgehill in Newport, retiring in 1990. For many years he was a partner in the Sullivan Hardware Co. Mr. Fagan served on the board of directors of Newport Hospital and was a former volunteer of the year at Newport Hospital. He was a parishioner of St. Lucy’s Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, daughters Patricia A. O’Brien of Riverside, Conn., and Monica J. Condry of Middletown, sons James P. Fagan of Middletown and Paul C. Fagan and Michael J. Fagan, both of Portsmouth, brothers Robert Fagan of Newport and Arthur Fagan of Middletown, nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Barbara J. Fagan.
His funeral was held Dec. 7 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. George Jennings
George B. Jennings, 87, of Weatherly Avenue in Newport died Friday, Dec. 7 at Newport Hospital. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada May 22, 1914, he was the son of the late Frank S. and Josie (Higgins) Jennings. He was the husband of the late Ruby V. (Hatcher) Jennings.
Mr. Jennings was a laboratory supervisor, working for Mr. Eppley and at Eppley Laboratory for a total of 60 years, retiring in November 1993. He lived on Weatherly Avenue since 1950. Mr. Jennings was a member of the St. John’s Lodge of Masons for 56 years. There are many people who will remember him for the long walks he enjoyed taking around Newport.
He is survived by his son Stanley J. Jennings of South Berwick, Maine, daughter Barbara A. Jennings of Eliot, Maine, brother Sidney Jennings of Newport, sisters Jean Virgadamo of Newport, Stella Corter of Vienna, Va., and Muriel Smith of Newport, and granddaughters Dawn G. Jennings of San Diego, Calif., and Amy L. Jennings of Worcester, Mass. He also leaves his best friend, Ruth C. Lowndes of Newport. He was the brother of the late Thelma Tuttle.

Ruth Leslie
Ruth Nourse (Patten) Leslie, 89, of Sakonnet Bay Manor on Main Road in Tiverton, formerly of Bristol, died Friday, Dec. 7 at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Mass. She was the wife of H. Bruce Leslie. Born in Clinton, Mass., Jan. 15, 1912, she was the daughter of the late James Pollard Patten and Fidelia (Nourse) Patten.
Mrs. Leslie was a graduate of Framingham State College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1934. She was active in church and community organizations including the Bristol Garden Club (past president), the RI State Federation of Garden Clubs (life member), the Asbury Methodist Church in Warwick, the First Congregational Church in Bristol and the RI Veterans Home in Bristol (volunteer). Mrs. Leslie had also been involved with the Bristol Historical and Preservation Society and the Friends of Blithewolde.
She is survived by her husband, sons David W. Leslie of Williamsburg, Va., Richard N. Leslie of Yarmouth, Maine and Stephen B. Leslie of Newport, brother Donald Patten of Sterling, Mass., sister Roberta Reynolds of Keene, NH, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late James Patten and Rosamond Rambow.

Joann Saraceno
Joann Bernice Carlson Saraceno, 47, of Beacon Street in Middletown died Sunday, Dec. 9 at Newport Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Sept. 6, 1954, she was the daughter of Arthur Herbert Carlson and Dorothy Ann (Merone) Carlson.
Ms. Saraceno was a waitress at Aquidneck Pizza. She was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church and a volunteer with Hospice Care of Rhode Island.
She is survived by her boyfriend Manuel Simas of Middletown, son Lawrence Saraceno of Middletown, daughter Joann Saraceno of Middletown, brother Arthur H. Carlson, Jr. of Staten Island, NY, sister Ruth Ann Young of Middletown, four granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral was held Dec. 12 at the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
Alice Sullivan
Alice M. Sullivan, 86, of Everett Street in Newport died Friday Dec. 14 at home. Born in Newport Sept. 17, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Timothy J. and Bridget (Casey) Sullivan. She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in Newport and Rhode Island College. She taught for a few years in Tiverton and then in Newport, first at Sheffield School and then for more than 30 years at Mumford School and Thompson Jr. High School. She taught social studies and Latin and retired in 1975 as a counselor. For many years she was an active member of the Legion of Mary, a lay apostate engaged in apostolic work organized in Dublin, Ireland Sept. 7, 1926. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Newport, where she was active in C.Y.O., a member of the liturgical committee, and a volunteer at the Catholic information center. Miss Sullivan is survived by her sister and lifelong companion Anna C. Sullivan, with whom she lived, nephews Paul M. Sullivan of Honolulu, Hawaii, Mark L. Sullivan of Scituate, Mass., Kevin J. Sullivan of Wilmington, Mass., Philip F. Sullivan of Pelham, NH, Brian J. Sullivan of Cape Coral, Fla., niece Mary A. Sullivan of San Francisco, Calif., and grandniece Brianna Sullivan. She was the sister of the late Daniel F. Sullivan, Joseph P. Sullivan and Abagail Sullivan. Her funeral was held Dec. 19. She was the wife of the late John Harold Full. Born in Fall River, Mass., on May 23, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Lillian (Borden) Reed.
