She was the wife of the late Oscar L. Carden. Born in Tiverton, RI on Sept. 11, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Lottie (Barry) Clark.

Diane Alynn (Gibbs) Stearns, 44, of 11 Fly Jib Court, Jamestown, died Sept. 25, 2000 at her home. She was married to Ronald J. Stearns on June 17, 1978 at the United Methodist Church in Henry, IL. Born in Peoria, IL, Dec.9, 1955, she was the daughter of Donald Gibbs of Phoenix, AZ and the late Helen (Okerberg) Gibbs and stepdaughter of Barbara (Tuttle) Gibbs of Phoenix, AZ.
George A. Oakley
George A. Oakley, 71, the founder and president of Viking Tours of Newport and an early proponent of local tourism and redevelopment, died Sept. 10, 2000 at Newport hospital. He was the husband of Ann Marie Egan Oakley of 212 America, Goat Island.
In 1962 he bought a 15 year old school bus and offered the first public narrated tours of Newport. That venture was the start of Viking Motor Tours, a local family run business that now employs 50 people and has 28 motor vehicles.
Mr. Oakley was among the first to recognize the significance of Tall Ships, and was a lifelong fisherman who worked on commercial boats before joining the fire department. He was in the Army from 1947-1949, serving in Korea. He was a member of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, the Newport Lions Club, the Newport Council of Knights of Columbus, the National Tour Association, the National Association of Passenger Vessel Owners, the American Bus Association and the New England Bus Associaton.

Manuel Cincotta, Jr, 53 of 1420 Main Street, Tiverton, died Sept. 6, 2000 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Maureen H. (Lyons) Cincotta. Born in Springfield, MA on Feb. 1, 1947, he was the son of Manuel and Annunziata (Valetta) Cincotta both of Agawam, MA.

Anne Theresa Lucid, 90, of 111 Stonegate Drive Portsmouth, formerly of Norwood, New Jersey, died Wednesday 4, 2000 at Forest Farm Health Care Center Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late William F. Lucid.
Born in Jersey City. NJ on Jan. 9, 1910, she was the daughter of the later Mortimer and Nora Anne (Hanrihan) Carrigg.
Mrs. Lucid was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport. She was a former member of the Children of Mary.
She is survived by one daughter Nora L. Madden of Portsmouth, RI, 2 grandsons Peter Owen Madden of Fairfield, CT and Brian Madden of Portsmouth, RI. She was the sister of the late Thomas Carrigg and sister of the late Margaret Carrigg and Noreen Carrigg.
Frances Maria (Soares) Monterio
Frances Maria (Soares) Monterio, 82 of 26 Newport Avenue, Newport died Wednesday, October 4, 2000, at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Julius Monteiro. Born in New Bedford, MA on March 10, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Lopes) Soares.
Mrs. Monteiro had worked at Newport Hospital for 25 years, as a cafeteria supervising, retiring in 1983. She was a Communicant of St. Joseph’s Church.
She is survived by two sons Julius Monteiro of Tiverton, RI, and Victor Monteiro of Newport of Newport, RI, one daughter Ann Monteiro of Newport, RI, one sister Elizabeth Barrett of New Bedford, MA, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grand children, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Peter Soares, Mary Pina, and Della Soares.
Stanley Frank Sekunda Sr.
Stanley Frank Sekunda Sr., 85 of 113 Second Street, died Wednesday, October 4, 1000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was husband of Anita (Berthiaume) Sekunda. Born in New Bedford, MA, on December 8, 1914, he was the son of the late Kazimierz and Elizabeth (Kasprzyk) Sekunda.
Mr. Sekunda had served in the United States Navy, during the Korean Conflict. He had also worked in the power plants at the Naval Base for 30 years, retiring as the boiler plant foreman in 1967. Mr. Sekunda was a Communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Newport.
He is survived by two sons Stanley F. Sekunda of Middletown, RI, and James Sekunda of Newport, RI and one daughter Lillian Kaiser of, EL Cajon, CA, five sisters Emelia Sellars of Westport, MA, Betty Meredith of Attleboro, MA and Dorothy Vincent of Amesbury, MA, and 6 grandchildren. He was the brother of the late John Sekunda, Walter Sekunda, Mary Burke, and Cecilia Mosher.
Helen M. Bennett
Helen M. Bennett, 91, of 10 Corey Lane, Middletown, died Oct.4 at Newport Hospital, Newport. Born in Brooklyn, NY on May 19, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Timothy and Catherine (O’Dea) Bennett.
Bennett had worked in the English Department at the Brooklyn Technical Hight School from 1931-1973. She received her BA in English from St. Joseph’s College, Class of 1931, and her Masters of Art from Columbia University. She was an avid reader, enjoyed classical music and domestic and foreign travel.
She is survived by nephew James G. Golden of Portsmouth, RI, two nieces Elizabeth Ann Carter of Amhurst, MA and Edna M. Murphy of London, England, 7 great nieces and nephews and many great-great nieces and nephews.
Joseph John (Jim) Zammer
Joseph John (Jim) Zammer, 82, husband of Muriel (Morgan) Zammer of 82 Third St., died Oct. 6 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center on Bellevue Ave.
Born in Pottsville, PA on March 17, 1918. He was the son of John and Mabel (Miller) Zammer. Zammer had served in the US Marine Corps Reserve from 1935-1939.
He was a member of the AARP, Newport Lodge of Elks and the Middletown VFW. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Kenneth Zammer of Newport, a local painting contractor. He is also survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Robert Zammer.
Robert J. Rick
Robert J. Rick, 75, of Kay St, Newport and North Conway, New Hampshire died Sept. 30 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Louise (Logothets) Rick. Born in New Haven, CT on Sept. 17, 1925, he was the son of the late Edward Rick and the late Ethel McCoy Rick.
He was employed at the People’s Credit Union immediately after graduation from college and remained with this financial institution for his 45-year career. He held the positions of credit manager, assistant manager, manager, supervisor, director and treasurer and was eventually named to the top position of CEO, a post he held from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. As a professional and a firm supporter of the credit union initiative, he gave a great deal of time and effort to state, national and international credit union agencies.
He was a member and past president of the Newport Rotary Club. He was active in the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, serving as president, treasurer and director and was a past director of the Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce Federation. He was a commissioner of the sinking fund of the City of Newport and was named fund chairman in 1991. He was a life long member of the Newport Navy League, member and past president of the Rogers High School Alumni Association, past trustee of the former Island Hospice, a member of the Friends of the Waterfront and Friends of Newport Public Library. In 1992 he was named to the advisory board of the Rogers High School Vocational Technical Center and was a past board member of the Star of the Sea Housing Corporation.
For over 20 years he was the chairman of the Rogers High School Centennial Scholarship Committee, awarding more than 300 scholarships worth more than $500,000. A devoted family man with a wonderful sense of humor, he never met a dog he didn’t like.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons Robert Rick Jr. of Rockport, MA and Douglas Rick of Merrimack, NH, a daughter Michelle Rick-Chaves of Middletown, RI, and two grandsons Nicholas and Ryan Chaves. He is also survived by a brother Edward Rick of Raleigh, NC and a niece and nephew.
David M. Evans
David Meredith Evans, 64, a retired diplomat, died at home on October 4, 2000 in Washington, DC. He was the husband of Gail "Robin" Roberts Evans. Mr. Evans, a Newport summer resident and property owner, served on the board of the Newport Music Festival.
He was the founding chairman of the American Friends of the Russian Country Estate (A-FORCE), an organization dedicated to conserving the legacy of Russian country houses and museums and to stimulating their surrounding economies. Recently, he fostered an exchange program between the Preservation Society of Newport County (P.S.N.C.) and museum leaders in Russia.
Calling him a "great ambassador for cultural exchange," Trudy Coxe, CEO of the P.S.N.C said, "He [David Evans] had incredible international vision." Coxe, who worked with Mr. Evans to initiate the exchange program unifying like-minded people – American and Russian museum leaders – spoke of his tremendous respect for people and what they can do around the world.
Crediting Mr. Evans’ powerful thinking and diplomacy, Coxe said that, "He laid the groundwork so that museum management [people] from both countries will teach and learn from each other. This will have a great impact on the future."
On personal level, Coxe added that she had never met anyone kinder, and referred to the ever-present twinkle in his eyes as proof that he had great spirit.
Serving as a diplomat for half of his life until his retirement in 1995, Mr. Evans joined the Foreign Service in 1963 and became a leader in Cold War diplomacy. He twice received the State Department’s Superior Honor Award – in 1973 and in 1989 – and the Meritorious Honor Award in 1982. Mr. Evans received his B.A. from Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
A former fellow and Masters’ graduate of the Harvard Russian Research Center, Mr. Evans was an accomplished Russian expert with early postings behind the Iron Curtain. He played a prominent diplomatic role from 1987, a time critical to the formation of new democratic republics and market economies in Russia, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
From 1990 until 1995, Mr. Evans served with the US Congress as senior advisor to the Commission on Security and Cooperation (CSCE) in Europe, directing all CSCE activities relating to the former Soviet Union and East Central Europe.
In 1991, Mr. Evans was the first serving US diplomat to visit Albania after World War II, and in 1992, he was delegated as the senior American official to observe the Bosnian referendum on independence.
In Vienna, Mr. Evans was the chief negotiator for economics, science, technology and the environment on the US Delegation to Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. Previously, he was the political advisor in London to the commander-in-chief, United Naval Forces Europe. He worked at the White House for four years as a specialist on East-West trade during the Nixon and Ford administrations.
During his career, Mr. Evans also served at American embassies in Moscow, Warsaw and Belgrade.
He was a member of the Spouting Rock Beach Association and the Newport Reading Room.
Besides his second wife, Mr. Evans is survived by his mother, Beatrice Ball Landenberger of Philadelphia; his son, David Mowbray Evans of Maryland; his daughter, Meredith Stephanie Ball Evans of Washington, DC; and his three step-sons: Forrester A. Clark, III, Cameron B. Clark, both of Boston, MA, and Mathew R. Clark of South Hamilton, MA.
The burial service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2000 at 11 a.m. at St. Columba’s Chapel, 58 Vaucluse Avenue, Middletown, RI.
A memorial service will follow on Thursday, November 9, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Mount St. Alban, Washington, DC.

John Paul Lawlor
John Paul Lawlor, 78, of Island Avenue in Portsmouth died Sunday, October 22, 2000, at the Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol, Rhode Island.
He was the husband of the late Helena (Porter) Lawlor.
Born in Victor, IA, on July 30, 1922, he was the son of the late James and Anna (Dusterhoff) Lawlor.
Mr. Lawlor had worked as a supervisor in the textile manufacturing industry, at Sterling Pile Fabrics in Fall River, MA, from 1950, until 1971. He then went to work for Quaker Fabrics in Fall River, MA, as a supervisor from 1971, retiring in 1989. Mr. Lawlor had also worked as a part time real estate agent and was the owner of the former "the Grinder Shop" of Island Park, Portsmouth. He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving in the PT Squadrons #6, #4, and # 18, during WWII, in the Pacific Theatre and the Philippines, retiring in 1947,as a Chief Motor Machinist Mate. He was a Communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth. Mr Lawlor was a member of the Portsmouth VFW Post #5390 and the Sakonnet Sportsman Club. During the 1980s, he was a former member of the Portsmouth Water Board and during the 1960s, served on the Town Council.
He is survived by two sons Michael J. Lawlor of York, ME, and John P. Lawlor, Jr. of Portsmouth, RI, two daughters Julie A. Barker of Portsmouth, RI, and Barbara J. Carroll of Melbourne, FL, one brother, Daniel Lawlor of Clinton, IA, one sister Mary Mcknee of Clinton, IA, and 11 grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Eugene Lowlier, James Lowlier, Thomas Lowlier, Raymond M. Lowlier, Pauline Wordless, Laurian Cavanaugh, and Theresa Ritter.

Jean Marie Winn
Jean Marie Winn, 62, of 45 Orchard Road in Portsmouth, died Saturday, October 14, 2000 at Newport Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island. She was the wife of the late Master Chief Lawrence J. Winn, USN Ret.
Born in Scranton, PA on April 9, 1938, she was the daughter of the late George E. Sink and the late Anna (Hagen) Sink.
Mrs. Winn was a graduate and Valedictorian of the class of 1955 of St. Mary’s High School in Scranton, PA. From 1955-1962, she worked as an administrative assistant for Shelborne Electronics in Wilkes- Barre, PA. After a long career as a homemaker, Mrs. Winn returned to the University of Rhode Island, receiving her BS in Business, class of 1987, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She then worked at the Navy Exchange in Newport, RI for several years.
She is survived by two daughters: Denise Will Larsen of Portsmouth, RI, and Michelle Winn Elliot of Shrewsbury, MA; one granddaughter and one grandson.

Dr. William F. Hoffman III
Dr. William F. Hoffman III, 59, of 30 Anne Hutchinson Court, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford, MA, after a courageous year and a half long battle with lung cancer. (He was a non smoker.) Physician, healer, psychiatrist, Bill dedicated his life to helping others. From volunteering as a physician in Vietnam through Project Concern to establishing the Bridging the Gaps annual conference with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in Rhode Island, Bill worked at education and healing those afflicted with illness.
He was the husband of Robin Lynn (Zuckerman) Hoffmann.
Born in New York City, NY, on October 26, 1940, he was the son of the late William F. and Mary Angela (McDonnell) Hoffman.
Dr. Hoffman served in the US Army, as a Green Beret in the Vietnam War.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons: William F. Hoffman IV of Portsmouth, RI, and Keith D. Hoffman of Portsmouth, RI; one brother, Robert McDonnell Hoffman of Escondido, CA; and two sisters: Angela Hoffman Coghlan of Philadelphia, PA, and Mary Hoffman Marks of Baltimore, MD.
Burial will follow in Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Donald Peter Titus
Donald Peter Titus, 61, of 13 Binney St, Newport, died Oct. 10, 2000 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport on April 2, 1939, he was the son of the late John C. and Avis (Edin) Titus. Titus had worked as an accountant at the Naval Underwater Center, for 30 years, retiring in 1997.
Nancy C. Buell
Nancy C. Buell, 44, of 468 Purgatory Road, Middletown, died Oct. 10, 2000 at home, of cancer. Born in Hamburg, Germany on March 21, 1956, she was the daughter of William A. Buell of Middletown, step-daughter of Mary Buell of Middletown and daughter of the late Jeanne (Baldwin) Buell. She attended the Wheeler School in Providence and Tufts University. She was trained as a mime artist at the Jaques LeCog School of Mime in Paris and began her lifetime career as an entertainer, as a circus clown working in children’s wards in New York City hospitals. For the last years of her life she worked as an actress and cabaret singer in Europe, mostly in Germany and New York.

George William Wilkinson, 63, of 66 Linda Ave, in Portsmouth, died Oct. 16, 2000 at home. He was the husband of Theresa (Martin) Wilkinson. Born in Winchester, MA, on Feb.4, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles and Velma (King) Wilkinson.
Robert Horne Charles
Leader in aviation business who served in President Kennedy’s administration died last week
Robert H. Charles, 87, an executive of the former McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, now Boeing, died on October 25, 2000 at home in Newport, RI. He had been in poor heath for several years.
He practiced law at Thompson, Coburn in St. Louis and then joined the young firm, McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. He eventually rose to become the executive vice-president, a director and member of its executive committee. He was especially proud of the McDonnell aircraft Corporation’s accomplishments in designing and building the first Navy plane to take off and land on an aircraft carrier, and the designing and building of the nation’s first satellite.
In 1962, Mr. Charles was appointed by President John F. Kennedy as Assistant Secretary of the Air Force and served in that capacity for five years. His experience in negotiating with the government on a sole-source basis led him to create a more competitive system for the development and production of aircraft.
"Bob Charles was a very courageous gentleman and served the country well as the assistant secretary of the Air Force," said Bruce G. Sundlun, former governor of Rhode Island. "He was in large measure responsible for very heavy transports which Secretary Kissinger used to transport troops and supplies to the Middle East to resolve the Yom Kippur war involving Israel, Syria and Egypt."
"Bob was equally courageous during the latter part of his life when his mobility was seriously affected by a stroke," Governor Sundlun continued. "He never lost his sense of humor, particularly about himself."
Mr. Charles was born in 1913 in St. Louis, MO. He graduated from the St. Louis Country Day School in 1931, Yale University in 1935 and the Yale Law School in 1938.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Marion Oates Charles of Washington, DC, and Newport, RI; his children, Robert H. Charles, Jr. of Washington, DC, Ellena S. Riley of Bath, ME, Sumner S. Charles of St. Louis, MO, and Eliza S. Walton of Newcastle, ME; his step-daughter, Victoria Leiter Mele of Newport, RI; and six grandchildren.
A son, McCandless, died in an airplane crash in 1971. His first wife, Elizabeth Olive Sewall, the daughter of Governor Sumner Sewall of Maine, died in 1967.
Mr. Charles was a member of the Metropolitan and Chevy Chase clubs of Washington, DC. In Newport, he was a member of the Spouting Rock Beach Association, the Newport Country Club, the Clambake Club of Newport and the Reading Room. He had been a trustee of the Preservation Society of Newport County.
A private graveside service and burial are being planned in Bath, Maine. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Preservation Society of Newport County and the St. Louis Country Day School.
Emily P. (Pratt) Thayer
Emily P. (Pratt) Thayer, 53, of 4 Admirality Drive, Middletown, died Nov. 5, 2000 at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI.
Born in Bronxville, N.Y., on March 15, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Elise (Cooke) Pratt.
Thayer attended the Mary A. Burnham School in North Hampton, MA, and the Garland J. College in Boston. She moved to Newport nine years ago from Norwell, MA. In Norwell, she was active in the garden club, an avid bridge player, tennis player, and an art historian.
She is survived by one son, Townsend Pratt Thayer of Newport, RI, two sisters, Nancy H. Pratt of Bethlehem, CT, and Mary Pratt of Bethlehem, CT, one niece and three nephews.
Henry Perry Furtado
Henry Perry Furtado, 79, of 37 Rogers Ln, Middletown, formerly of 22 South Drive, Portsmouth, died Nov. 4, 2000 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center. He was the husband of the late Isabell (Ramos) Furtado. Born in Fall River, Mass, on June 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Antone and Rose (Rego) Perry. Furtado had worked as a driver for the Assonet Sand and Gravel Company for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He was a veteran for the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. He was a member of St. Michael’s Charasmatic Church and the American Legion Post of Portsmouth. He is survived by his fiancé Emily B. Transue of Middletown, R.I.
Jacob James "Jake" Ribera
Jacob James "Jake" Ribera, 19, of 49 Cooper Beech Drive, Portsmouth and formerly of Goodwin St. Newport, died Nov. 4, 2000 in Middletown from injuries in a motorcycle accident. Born on Dec.15, 1980, he is the son of Stephen S. and Jeanie B. Gleisner Ribera of Porsmouth, R.I.
Ribera attended Rogers High School and was employed as an assistant gardener at many Newport and Middletown estates. He also worked at Shell Oil gas station on Thames Street in Newport, Rue de France and most recently at Givens Marine Survival Co. where he was a sales representative at a recent Annapolis Boat Show.
Jacob was to start a new posotion as a Simulated Missile Specialist at A.M.A. Ltd. (Aquidneck Management Association) in Middletown, R.I. on Nov. 20. Jacob loved Newport Harbor where he lived until recently. Besides his parents, he leaces a sister, Helen D. Ribera of Portsmouth, his paternal grandmother Anne V. O’Neill of Newport and maternal grandparents Stig and Dorothy Pine Gleisner of Block Island. He was the grandson of the late Michael J. Ribera.
Anthony Bucci
Anthony Bucci, of 15 Gooseberry Rd, Newport and proprietor of Bucci’s combination store at 3 Thames St, Newport died Nov. 5, 2000. He was the husband of Elizabeth V. (Annelli) Bucci and the father of Veronica O. Bucci-May, Bruce Bucci and Anthony A. Bucci. He was born in Newport on March 21, 1928, the son of the late Alberto and Olivera Bucci. He leaves a brother, Frank Bucci of Portsmouth and two sisters, Mary Watts of Newport and Helen Allen of California.
Angeline Rego Cardoza
Angeline Rego Cardoza, 91, of 74 Fayal Lane in Middletown died Nov. 20, 2000 at home. She was the wife of the late William L. Cardoza, the former owner of the former Gateway Motel in Middletown.
Born in Middletown on Nov. 23, 1908, she was the daughter of Manuel Rego and Victoria (Cordeiro) Rego. Cardoza was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church and a member of the Rosary Sodality. She is survived by one daughter, Lorraine Cardoza-O’Brien of Middletown, three sons, William Cardoza Jr. of Middletown; Robert Cardoza of Middletown, Arthur Cardoza of Middletown, one sister, Sarah Rego of Middletown, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Cardoza was the sister of the late Manuel Rego, Ruy Rego, Antionette Silvia and Mary Borges.
Arthur C. Moniz
Arthur C. Moniz, 77, of 57 Bayview Park, Middletown, formerly of 68 Evarts Street, Newport, died Nov. 17, 2000 at Newport Hospital. Born in Sao Miguel, Portugal on Sept.19, 1923, he was the son of the late Augusto L. and Francelina dePaixao (Calouro) Moniz.
Moniz was a landscaper with the Cushings Estate for 25 years and retired in 1991. He is survived by two daughters, Ilda Maria Moniz of Middletown and Maria R. Vieira of Ontario, Canada and one stepson, George Phillips of Middletown. He was preceded in death by his first wife Maria Dorvalina Silvia (Canario) Moniz and his second wife Carrie (Phillips) Moniz.
Frances Tompkins Holt
Frances Tompkins Holt, 92, of 140 Angell Road, Cumberland, RI, formerly of Colonial Village, Middletown on Nov. 14, 2000 at the Oak Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 544 Pleasant Street in Pawtucket, RI.
Born in Newport on Jan. 9, 1908, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Susan (Clarke) Holt. Holt had worked as teacher at St. Michael’s School in Newport and at the former New School in Middletown for 45 years and retired in 1985. She was a member of Channing Memorial Church in Newport. She loved gardening and fixing flowers for her church.
She is survived by one sister, Edna H. Sherman of Middletown, one niece, Virginia Russo of Cumberland, three nephews, William Dutra of Middletown, David A. Sherman of Middletown, and Peter Sherman of Middletown. She is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews, one great great nephew, and two great great nieces. She was the sister of the late Charlotte H. Dutra.
Herbert A. Lawton
Herbert A. Lawton, 96, of 114 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport, died Nov. 17, 2000 at the Forest Farm Health Center in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Mae (McGown) Lawton. Born in Newport on April 28, 1904, he was the son of the late George C. and Bertha F. (Burbidge) Lawton.
In 1924, he joined the staff of the Newport Herald as a reporter and in 1926, he became night editor for the paper. His selection as editor was justified when he stopped a press run as the intended headline "Planes hit in midair over N.Y." was printed as "Planes shit in midair over N.Y." Also, he simultaneously served as a correspondent for the Providence Tribune, New Bedford Standard Times and the Boston Globe. In 1927, he served briefly as the editor of a weekly newspaper — the Newport County Sentinel.
In 1928 Lawton became the assistant secretary of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce. In 1931 he was named the executive director of the chamber and manager of its affiliate, the Newport Credit Bureau. Later in life Lawton worked as the director of sales and operations for the Preservation Society of Newport County. He is survived by one son, Herbert Lawton Jr. of Newport, one daughter, Janice L. Dwyer of Middletown, three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Grace Bernadette (Buillion) Gobidas
Grace Bernadette (Buillion) Gobidas, 73, of 592 East Main Road, Middletown and formerly of 19 Hunter Ave, Newport died Nov. 15, 2000 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center in Newport. She was the wife of the late John Martin Gobidas. Born in Brisbane Australia, on Jan. 24, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Mabel (Renner) Bullion. Gobidas had worked as a self-employed seamstress for over 30 years. She was a member of the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary.
She is survived by four daughters, Theresa Moretti of Cranston, Marie Gobidas of San Francisco, CA, Pauline Peter of Middletown, R.I. and Grace Marshall of New Orleans, LA. She is also survived by one brother, Harold Bullion of Brisbane, Australia, two sisters, Rose Cantrell and Barbara King of Brisbane, Australia, and four grandchildren.
