Dorothy S. Anderson
Dorothy S. Anderson, 79 formerly of Tiverton and South Kingston R.I., died Oct. 5, 2000 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport.
Anderson worked as a writer for the Sakonnet Times newspaper in Portsmouth, R.I. in the 1970’s. She leaves three sons, Jeffrey, Steven and Paul; two daughters, Christine and Barbara; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Evelyn R. Cavanaugh
Evelyn R. Cavanaugh, 88, of 3007 Westwood Drive Lancaster, died Nov 20, 2000 at the Brethren Village, Lancaster. She was the wife of the late Leonard J. Cavanaugh. Born in Bellingham, Mass., on Aug. 26, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Adelard Rattie and the late Bertha (Sears) Rattie. Before moving to Lancaster to live with her daughter in 1994, she resided at 44 Baylies Ave., Portsmouth.
Mrs. Cavanaugh retired as a teacher from the Portsmouth Public Schools in 1976. She was a 1931 graduate of Framingham State College and a 1965 Graduate of Rhode Island College. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Portsmouth for over 60 years, and a member of the Catholic Women’s Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail Ninness, of Marion, III., and Eileen M. Shipe, of Lancaster, PA, with whom she lived; seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by three sons: Donald Cavanaugh, Delore Cavanaugh, and David Cavanaugh.
Irene Grace McDermott
Irene Grace (Sharp) McDermott, 84, of the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 70 Harrison Ave., Newport, formerly of 20 Islington Ave., Portsmouth, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000 at Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Newport. She was the wife of the late William F. McDermott Sr. Born in Bridgeport, Conneticut, on April 4, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Edith (Binns) Sharp.
Mrs. McDermott was a Communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth. She was a member of the Over 60 Club. She is survived by one son, William F. McDermott Jr. (address unknown), three daughters, Mary Ann Hanlon of Portsmouth, Irene G. Bergquist of Portsmith, and Florence E. Spachman of Hudson, OH, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Florence Green.

Nancy Tollefson
Nancy (Simons) Tollefson, 53, of 23 Spinnaker Court, Middletown, died Nov. 21, 2000, at Miriam Hospital, Providence, of respiratory failure following heart surgery. She was the wife of Michael Tollefson for 26 years. Born in Florence, SC, on April 21, 1947, she was the daughter of Robert L. and Ruth (Miller) Simons, both of Florence, SC.
Mrs. Tollefson was a graduate of Columbia College in Columbia, SC, Class of 1969. A loyal Navy wife, she had lived in Charleston, SC, Omaha, NB, Philadelphia PA, Norfolk, VA, Portsmouth, NH, and Newport, RI. She had started a career in library science and was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for women educators. Her greatest joy was leading the Dolphin Scholarship fundraiser in Charleston, SC, during the years of 1985 – 1988 and 1991 – 1993. While living in Newport, she was a member of the Newport Officer Spouse Club. Mrs. Tollefson was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed teaching this craft.
Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by one sister, Sara Couch, of Spartanburg, SC, a niece, Elizabeth Couch of Spartanburg, SC, a niece, Marisa Walsh and nephew, Daniel Walsh, both of Baghdad, FL.

Kenneth J. Keeley
Kenneth J. Keeley, 82, of 4 Union Street, Newport, died Nov. 22, 2000 at home. He was the husband of Glenna P. (Wilkie) Keeley. Born in Newport, RI on Feb. 16, 1918, he was the son of the late Joseph T. Keeley, Sr. and the late Annie (Silvia ) Keeley Fitzpatrick.
Mr. Keeley worked for NUSC as an Electronics Technician until his retirement in 1977. He later worked for the Newport Water Department. He was a member of the National Association of Federal Employees and a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Newport.
He is survived by his wife Glenna P. Keeley of Newport, two sons, Joseph T. Keeley III of Lynchburg, VA and James Keeley of Buffalo, NY, two daughters, Kathleen Keeley Bishop of Washington, DC, and Patricia Bragg of Killington, VT, a brother, Joseph T. Keeley, II of Middletown, RI, a sister, Evelyn DeSantis of Newport, RI, and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Helen Fitzpatrick.

Bertha F. Boss
Bertha F. (Weaver) Boss, 100, of 333 Green End Avenue, Middletown, formerly of Poplar Street, Newport, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000 at Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late Alexander M. Boss, former SGT., Newport Police Department. Born in Newport, RI on Aug. 12, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Weaver and the late Ada Gossler Weaver.
A lifelong resident of Newport, Mrs. Boss worked for the former Lincoln Drug Store. She was a lifelong member of the Point Association of Newport and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary #7 of Newport.
She is survived by one cousin – Margaret Black of East Hampton, NY - and lifelong friends, Bill and Trudy Willis of Middletown.
Becky Ann Marion (Wilkie) Beck
Becky Ann Marion (Wilkie) Beck, 46, of Newport, RI died Tues., Nov. 28, 2000 at Miriam Hospital Providence, RI. She was the wife of Robert Terrell Beck. Born in Fall River, MA on Feb. 10, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Ernest H. Wilkie and the late Ellen G. (Edwards) Wilkie.
Mrs. Beck was the pack committee chairman for the Cub Scout Pack #27 of Newport for 3 years. She was a former member of the Writers Group of Newport.
She is survived by husband Robert Terrell Beck of Newport, RI, step-father Anthony Prisco of Newport, RI, one son, Joshua Edward Hickory of Schnectady, NY, one daughter, Dawn Marie Hickory of Schnectady, NY, one sister, Sandra Elaine Vincent of Newport, RI, one step-sister, Kelly Ann Blais of Newport, RI.
Louise A. (Musu) Gogg
Louise A. (Musu) Gogg, 52, of Middletown, RI, died Fri., Dec. 1, 2000 at the home of her daughter in Portsmouth, RI. Born in France on Aug. 19, 1948, she was the daughter of Pasqual Musu, of Menton, France.
Mrs. Gogg had worked as a job coach for the James L. Maher Center on Aquidneck Ave., in Middletown. She had formerly worked for Child and Family Services of Newport County. Mrs. Gogg was a Communicant of St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown.
Besides her father, she is survived by one daughter, Nadine Gogg of Portsmouth, RI, and her stepfather, Alfons K.H. Uebe of Beaugeay, France.

Louise (Bedingfield) Collins
Louise, (Bedingfield) Collins, 97, formerly of Baltimore, MD, died Dec. 7, 2000 at Heatherwood Health Care Center in Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late George Preston Collins. Born in Macon, GA on Aug. 19,1903, she was the daughter of Eugene Mallory Bedingfield and Georgia (Sims) Bedingfield.
A resident of Baltimore, Maryland, Mrs. Collins was a member of St. Michael’s Church and All Angels Church of Baltimore. She was also a member of Trinity Church in Newport, and an avid gardener.
She is now survived by one daughter, Patricia C. Sherman of Newport, RI, one granddaughter, Susan Mallory Sherman of Cambridge, MA, and one grandson, Lt. Thomas Hanson Sherman III, USCG, Lake Ridge, VA.

Carl J. Heylek
Carl J. Heylek, 85, of Middletown, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY, died Dec. 10, 2000 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Joan A. (Carpentier) Heylek. Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on Aug. 15, 1915, he was the son of the late Henry and Mary (Seraci) Heylek.
Mr. Heylek had worked as a cutter-grinder for the GM Powertrain Plant in Towanda, NY for 25 years, retiring in 1978. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving in WWII and at the Battle of Midway. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1142 of Niagara Falls, NY. Mr. Heylek was a member and union representative of the UAW Local 774 of Tonawanda, NY, and also an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by one son, Michael J. Heylek Sr., of Niagara Falls, NY, two daughters, Joan Ryan, of Farmingdale, Long Island, NY, and Veronica Rabitor, of Middletown, RI, and four grandchildren. He was the father of the late Carl L. Heylek. He was also the brother of the late Joseph Heyek, Henry Heylek, Emma Smith, Barbara McAvoy, Katherine Holz, Rose Flaherty, Margaret Stitzer, and Mary Peterson.

Richard Henry Sowers
Richard Henry Sowers, 59, of Middletown, RI, died Dec. 12, 2000 at home. He was the husband of Ethelberta "Terry" (Tomlin) Sowers. Born in Newport, RI on Apr. 19, 1941, he was the son of the late Daniel S. and Alice (Travis) Sowers.
Mr. Sowers served in the Navy on the USS Nitro, was a laborer for the RI Dept. of Environmental Management, and served as the President of the Fleet Reserve Association. He was also a member of the Viking Riders of RI, being an avid biker and motorcycle racer for 40 years. He was a dart team player and avid pool player as well, and a member of the AllVets in Middletown and of the Friendly Sons of Newport.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Samantha C. Weddle of Oak Harbor, WA and Staci C. Berube of Swansea, MA, a brother, Daniel Sowers of Newport, RI, and five grandchildren. He was the stepfather of the late James Ratchford and brother of the late James W. Sowers.
Memorial services will be held Sat., Dec. 16, 2000 at 10:00 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in private.

Retha (King) Bolin
Retha (King) Bolin, 88, of 99 Sims St, Newport, died Dec. 8, 2000 at home. She was the wife of the late Joseph Arthur Bolin. Born in Dallas County, Alabama on July 27, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland King Sr. and the late Elizabeth King.
She is survived by one sister Rosalee House of FL; two nephews, Theophilous King of Birmingham, AL and George King of N.Y.C; two nieces, Forrestine Long and Barbara Cain of Birmingham, AL. Bolin was the sister of the late Grover Cleveland King Jr. and Ceola Hardaway.
Doris (Oster) Barbas
Doris (Oster) Barbas, 60 of 6 Wood Rd, Middletown, died Dec. 15, 2000 at home. She was the wife of Stanley Barbas.
Born in the Bronx, N.Y. on April 2, 1940, she was the daughter of the late William and Mildred (Schwartz) Oster.
Barbas attended High School of Music and Art in N.Y.C. and later attended Boston University.
She held a private pilot’s license and loved to fly. She had an instrument ground instructor rating and accumulated 210 house of flying. She was a member of the Rhode Island Pilots Association. She loved art and classical music.
Besides her husband, she leaves three sons David Barbas of Webster, MA; Greg Barbas of Davie, FL, and Michael Barbas of Warwick, RI. She leaves two brothers Stanley Oster of Sunrise, FL and Edward Oster of Fort Lauderdale, FL, a sister Gail Oster of Coral Springs, FL; two granddaughters Julianne Barbas of Webster, MA, and April Barbas of Davie, FL and one grandson Christopher Barbas of Webster, MA.
Robert John Leed
Robert John Leed, 35 of 92 VanZandt Avenue, Newport, died Dec. 12, 2000 at the Newport Hospital. Born in East Greenwich, RI on June 7, 1965, he was the son of Robert E. and Helen B. (Doherty) Leed, both of Newport.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers Jesse Smith of Jappa, MD and James Polk of Newport, RI; and two sisters Mary Leed Watterson of Newport, RI and Janet Leed Galino of Cocoa, FL.
Dennis Shea, 87
Former mayor of Newport
Dennis F. Shea Jr., 87, of Burdick Avenue in Newport died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 at the Village House on Harrison Avenue in Newport. He was the husband of the late Rose M. (Bobba) Shea. Born in Newport March 4, 1912, he was a son of the late Dennis F. and Catherine T. Shea.
Mr. Shea worked as an office manager for the former Egan Laundry Company in Newport, the former D. Dixon Donovan Plumbing Company in Newport, Newport Hospital, Viti Brothers auto dealership in Middletown and the Bellevue Nursing Home, now the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, in Newport, retiring in 1978. He was a graduate of De La Salle Academy and Providence College. He had taught at La Salle Academy in Providence for five years before serving in the US Navy during World War II.
Mr. Shea was active in politics, serving on the Newport City Council from 1957-67. He was mayor of Newport from 1965-67 and served a term in the RI General Assembly. A longtime parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Newport, he assisted with bookkeeping for the church. He was a member of the Newport Knights of Columbus and spent much of his time in the summers at Easton Beach.
He is survived by his daughter Rosemary Harrison of Warwick, son Dennis F. Shea III of Newport, brothers Lawrence X. Shea of Newport and Frederick Shea of Holyoke, Mass., sisters Elizabeth Arthur of Brick, NJ, and Port St. Lucie, Fla., Kathleen Bundy and Eileen C. Kelly, both of Newport, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Louise Albro
Louise Ethelwyn (DeBlois) Albro, 89, of Rosedale Court in Middletown died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of Arthur Albert Albro, Jr. Born in Newport June 2, 1912, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Ethel (Littlefield) DeBlois.
Mrs. Albro and her husband trace their lineage back to the original settlers in the early 1620s. She is a direct descendant of Resolved White. She was a Sunday school teacher from 1935 to 1954 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, a president of the Parent-Teacher Fellowship of St. Mary’s, a member of the St. Mary’s altar guild from 1960 to 1975. She enjoyed doing needlework and knitting for her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, son William A. Albro of Olympia, Wash., daughters Phyllis L. Armbrust of Chula Vista, Calif., and Linda J. Burkitt of Middletown, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Arthur Ball
Arthur A. Ball, 82, of Thurston Avenue in Portsmouth, formerly of Alabama, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001 at home. He was the husband of Mae A. (DeCosta) Ball. Born in Valdosta, Ga., Feb. 4, 1919, he was the son of the late Frank and Ann Elizabeth (Moorman) Ball.
Mr. Ball was a heavy equipment operator with the Federal Civil Service. He also worked for the Underwater Ordinance Ammunition Depot. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theater from Pearl Harbor.
Mr. Ball was an amateur musician playing locally at Billy Goode’s and often at family occasions. In his youth, he played in Montgomery, Ala., in the theaters and was on the radio. He also played with Hank Williams and Eddi Zack.
He is survived by his wife, son Arthur A. Ball Jr. of Portsmouth, daughters Shirley Sullivan of Oxford, Pa., and Janet DiRuzzo of Middletown, grandson Christopher Ball of Portsmouth, granddaughter Shannon DiRuzzo of Alaska and several nieces and nephews. He was the twin brother of the late Frank Ball.

Forster Chase
Forster Elwood Chase, 84, of East Main Road in Portsmouth died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 at home. He was the husband of Eleanor Miriam (Furbush) Chase. Born in Portsmouth Aug. 21, 1917, he was the son of the late Constant Chase and Orrel (Peabody) Chase.
Mr. Chase retired in 1976 from the US Postal Service after 38 years of service. He had worked at Newport’s Thames Street post office and at the Fleet post office on the Naval base. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 43rd Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, where he had served for 25 years as its treasurer, vestryman and usher. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, sons Thomas E. Chase of Sterling, Mass., and George W. Chase of North Kingstown, daughter Virginia M. Phinney of Strafford, NH, and four grandchildren.

Jennie Domingoes
Jennie (Ciavarini) Domingoes of Bartlett Road in Middletown died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001 at home. She was the wife of Joseph A. Domingoes. Born in Newport, she was the daughter of the late August and Elvira (Briscoli) Ciavarini.
Mrs. Domingoes was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She had been employed at the Surface Warfare Command School for 22 years, retiring in 1996. She was a member of Jesus Saviour Church and enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening.
She is survived by her husband, sons Joseph A. Domingoes III of Portsmouth and Jeffrey A. Domingoes of Charlestown, daughter JoAnn Nannig of North Kingstown, sisters Mary Ciavarini and Doris Boiani, both of Newport, and four grandchildren.

Joyce Dufault
Joyce Edna (Belanger) Dufault, 43, of Willow Lane in Portsmouth, formerly of Fall River, Mass., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. She was the wife of Donald Dufault. Born in Fall River Dec. 7, 1958, she was the daughter of Doris (Sinotte) Belanger of Fall River and the late Alyre Belanger.
Mrs. Dufault had worked part time cleaning houses and offices in the Fall River area.
She is survived by her husband, mother, son Randy Jason Dufault of Portsmouth, daughter Rachel Colette Dufault of Portsmouth, brothers Bruce Belanger of Fall River, Wayne Belanger of Fall River and Butch Belanger of Westport, Mass., sisters Linda Sims of Cambridge, Mass., and Judy Proc of Fall River, granddaughter Kayla Brooke Santos of Portsmouth and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral was held Dec. 29.
Inez Gill
Inez Cecelia (Gibbons) Gill, 77, of Metacom Manor in Bristol, formerly of Providence and Aquidneck Island, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001 at home. She was the wife of Justin Lawrence Gill. Born in Providence Nov. 14, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James and Sarah (Gill) Gibbons.
Mrs. Gill was an executive secretary with the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company in Providence from 1959 to 1980 and then with the McDonald Insurance Company in Providence until her retirement in 1988.
She is survived by her husband, daughters Sheila M. Pollock of Portsmouth and Rosemary Cucca of Palm City, Fla., and four grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Robert and Joseph Gibbons.

Elizabeth Gilmore
Elizabeth B. (Bork) Gilmore, 79, of Carey Street in Newport, formerly of Chicago, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Roy Weston Gilmore. Born in Chicago June 4, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Rudolph Leo and Elizabeth Gertrude (Schumacher) Bork.
Mrs. Gilmore worked for the City of Newport as the director of the recreation center and the director of the girls recreation department for 23 years, retiring in 1980. She was also employed at Precision Scientific’s salves sutres division as an assistant supervisor and at the Cook County Hospital as a neurohistology technician.
She graduated from Austin High School in Chicago, Chicago College Laboratory Technique and Ohio Christian College. She was a member of Emmanuel Church in Newport and served as a clerk, assistant treasurer and Sunday school teacher for approximately 50 years. She was a member of the Girls Friendly Society USA, an affiliate of the Episcopal church; the Girls Friendly Society of Rhode Island (president); the Girls Friendly Society National Advisory Board (ad hoc committee); Girls Friendly Society National Sponsors (secretary). She was leadership chair and a camp director for the Girls Friendly Society of Rhode Island and a branch adviser and leader of the Emmanuel Church branch for 40 years.
She was professionally affiliated with the RI Recreation Association, International Playground Association, US Twirling Association, International Twirling Teachers Institute, International Academy of Twirling Teachers, International Platform Association, Alpha Psi Omega Society, Puppeteers of America, Southeastern Massachusetts Majorette Association and Local 911 AFSCME AFL-CIO.
She was a volunteer for VINE (Volunteers in Newport Education) for approximately 10 years, giving lectures on art appreciation, books, minerals and gems in Newport schools.
She was on the board of directors at the Newport Girls Club and was a member of the Island Teens Association’s advisory committee, the Swanhurst Choral Society, the American Society of Gem Cutters, the Rhode Island Minerals Hunters and the Kennebec Rocks and Mineral Club in Maine.
She received the Service to Youth award from the YMCA in 1972. She was listed in the Who’s Who of American Women dictionary of international biography, the Community Leaders of America, the World Who’s Who of Women, the Who’s Who in Baton Twirling and the International Who’s Who in Community Service.
She is survived by her husband, sons Roy Allan Gilmore and Russell Glenn Gilmore, both of Newport, and brother William George Bork of Wisconsin.

Charles Kellett
Charles W. Kellett, 94, of Paradise Avenue in Middletown died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Evelyn Alice (Barker) Kellett. Born in New Bedford, Mass., July 24, 1907, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Leyland) Kellett.
Mr. Kellett was a machinist at the Naval Warfare Ordinance Station, now known as the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, for more than 30 years, retiring in 1969. He attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown.
He is survived by his son Charles B. Kellett of Florida, daughter Sally Ann Black of Florida, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Mildred Irish.
Funeral services were private.
John MacKechnie
John Woodington MacKechnie, 72, of Portsmouth died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001 in Newport. He was the husband of the late Vicki (Cederblom) Johnson MacKechnie. Born in Northport, NY, Oct. 31, 1929, he was the son of the late Harry W. and Elizabeth (Ostrom) MacKechnie.
A 1950 graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy, his career included positions with Isthmian SS Company, Sparkman and Stephens of New York and Grumman Corporation. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing both boats and furniture. His passion in life was sailing and he taught his children to enjoy the sport. The MacKechnies were founding members of the Northport Yacht Club.
He is survived by his sons Robert W. MacKechnie of Virginia Beach, Va., and Ian W. MacKechnie of Middletown, daughters Barbara Ann Watts of Newport and Annie Howell of Middletown, stepchildren Dirk Johnson of Middletown, York Johnson of Newport, Tor Johnson of Long Island, NY, and Heather Shaver of Newport, brother Bruce MacKechnie of Boca Raton, Fla., sister Robbin Armstrong of West Swansey, NH, and 10 grandchildren.

Michael Pinto
Michael P. Pinto, 97, of Middletown died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 at home. He was the husband of Filomena (Fiero) Pinto. Born in San Fele, Italy May 11, 1904, he was the son of the late Sebastian and Maria Greco Pinto.
Mr. Pinto immigrated to New York City from Italy Jan. 2, 1921 and later moved to Newport. He owned and operated Pinto’s Barber Shop on Broadway for more than 75 years. The shop officially closed in September. He also established Pinto Real Estate, Inc., which invested in local properties. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and a trustee of the church for 35 years. From 1963 to 1985 he was on the board of directors of the Newport National Bank, which later became the Old Colony Bank. He was a commissioner at the Henderson Home, the Bishop McVinney Foundation and the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph’s Church. He was an adviser at St. Paul’s priory, past president of St. Vincent DePaul Society, past chair for St. Joseph’s Church Catholic Charity Fund and served on the board of directors of the Seamen’s Church Institute. He was a member of the Newport Sierra Club.
He is survived by his son Michael S. Pinto of Middletown, daughter Marie P. Smith of Middletown, grandsons Michael J. Smith, Jr., Gary P. Smith and Michael S. Pinto, Jr. and granddaughters Elizabeth M. Pinto and Debra A. Pinto.
His funeral was held Dec. 29. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the St. Joseph’s Church Building Fund, Mann Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
