Stephanie Lewis

Stephanie Erin Lewis, 28, of East Main Road in Portsmouth died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Born in Naples, Italy, April 18, 1973, she was the daughter of James Martin and Lynda "Mikki" (Heathcock) Lewis of Portsmouth.

Miss Lewis was a 1991 graduate of Middletown High School, where she was a cheerleader and an art student, winning many prestigious awards. She had been a student at the University of Rhode Island and hosted gourmet dinner parties for friends. She worked in Newport restaurants before moving to Florida in September of last year. Her love and enthusiasm for life and her devotion to friends will be greatly missed across many states.

She is survived by her parents, brother Sgt. James M. Lewis Jr. of Fort Bragg, N.C., sister Amanda Beth Lewis of Portsmouth, paternal grandmother Margaret S. Lewis of Branford, Conn., godparents Lou and Paulette Gelinou of Agawam, Mass., and Bradenton, Fla., and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister Jennifer Shawn Lewis in 1970.

Her funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 9 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth followed by a service at King’s Grant Fellowship Church in Portsmouth. Burial was private.

Anita O’Hanley

Anita S. (Leary) O’Hanley, 61, of Old Fort Road in Newport and Marks Street in Rochland, Mass., died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of Joseph A. O’Hanley of Newport. Born in Newport, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Anita M. Leary.

Mrs. O’Hanley was a 1957 graduate of Rogers High School. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Hazards Beach Club. She was an avid reader.

She is survived by her husband, sons Jerome A. O’Hanley of Biloxi, Miss., and Sean O’Hanley of Newport, daughter Stephanie A. O’Hanley of Newport and brother Michael T. Leary of Bristol.

Her funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Lena Venancio

Lena (Cordeiro) Venancio, 84, of Edgar Court in Newport died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Louis A. Venancio Sr. Born in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late August and Mary (Janeiro) Cordeiro.

She is survived by her daughters Mary A. Dwyer of Portsmouth and Louise A. Mercer of Bellingham, Mass., sisters Adeline Esleeck of Middletown and Julia Hay of Portsmouth, 10 grandchildren and five great-granddaughters. She was the mother of the late Louis A. Venancio Jr. and the sister of the late John Cordeiro, Manuel Cordeiro, Florence Gomes, Christine Pires and Mary Ridder.

Her funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 9 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.

Charles Vouros

Charles Gregory Vouros, 80, of Girard Avenue in Newport, formerly of Massachusetts, Alabama and Virginia, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002 at Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of the late Doris (Arhondy) Vouros. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Gregory and Kallopi (Bartis) Vouros.

Mr. Vouros graduated from Watertown High School, where he played baseball. He went on to play with the "Knot Hole Gang." He attended the Boston Braves games, and enjoyed sports all his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater, serving on the USS New Jersey and the USS Southerland. He earned nine battle starts.

Mr. Vouros worked in the Watertown area as a mechanic until he opened his own Mobil station, the Foss Park Service Station, in 1950 in Somerville, Mass. he became well-known for his ability and operated the station until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church, the VFW in Randolph, Mass., and the AHEPA, Maude Howe Chapter.

He is survived by his sons Gregory C. Vouros of Shutesbury, Mass., and Charles P. Vouros of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, daughter Cynthia Dimmock of Huntsville, Ala., brother Rev. Carl G. Vouros of Jamestown, sisters Florence Diamondes of Newport, Marie Mihos of Easton, Mass., Georgia Pappas of Newport and Theresa "Tery" Sarris of Brockton, Mass., five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 16 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames St., Newport. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames St., Newport, RI 02840.

Carol Brinkman

Carol Susan Brinkman, 58, of Crest Road in Tiverton died Feb. 15, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of EMC (SW) Robert E. Brinkman, USN. Born in Davin, W.V., Sept. 5, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Goldie (Toler) Brown.

Mrs. Brinkman had worked as a certified nursing assistant at American Personnel in Fall River, Mass., before retiring in 1997. She loved her home and her cats.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters living in West Virginia.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Pocassett Hill Cemetery in Tiverton. Donations in her memory may be made to the Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.

Patricia Burns

Patricia A. Burns, 67, of Annandale Road in Newport died Feb. 13, 2002 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport. She was the wife of John M. Burns. Born in Providence Oct. 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Edmond J. and Katherine Lynch O’Connell.

Mrs. Burns taught first grade for 38 years at Sheffield Elementary School in Newport, retiring in 1994. She was twice elected teacher of the year. After graduating from the former St. Catherine’s Academy, Mrs. Burns studied at Salve Regina College and graduated in 1956 with a degree in education and continued on to a master’s program. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport.

Mrs. Burns was an avid volunteer both in and out of the school system. While teaching she headed up programs such as the "Building Bridges" program, which brought residents of nursing homes into her classroom, working side by side with a student. The students in turn would visit the nursing home. She was also the founder of the "Bank on Books" program, where volunteers from the Mosaic Club read to students every day from October to December. At the end of the program, each child received a new book.

Mrs. Burns served on the Enrichment Fair, designed for gifted and talented children. Outside of school, she served on the executive board of Volunteers in Newport Education and the Mosaic Club. She also participated in the designer showcase with the Preservation Society of Newport County. She was an avid reader and a member of the Redwood Library. She was also a member of the Hazards Beach Association in Newport.

She is survived by her husband, son Timothy J. Burns of Newport, brother Dr. Edmond J. O’Connell of Bramford, Conn., granddaughters Mikaela Burns, Mollie Burns and Malorie Burns, all of Newport, and 19 nieces and nephews.

Her funeral was held Feb. 19. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Hibernian Scholarship Trust Fund, 2 Wellington Ave., Newport, RI 02840 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 245 Waterman St., Suite 306, Providence, RI 02906.

Anna DeCosta

Anna S. (Silveira) DeCosta, 84, of Miantonomi Avenue in Newport died Feb. 13, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Jesse DeCosta. Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Antone Diniz and Mary (DeConceicao) Silveira.

Mrs. DeCosta was a member of the Jesus Saviour Rosary Sodality and the Vasco da Gama Society. She was a faithful worker at the Holy Ghost Feast.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, sons Dennis F. DeCosta and Jesse DeCosta Jr., both of Middletown, daughter Anne M. DeAscentis of Middletown, sisters Madeline Perry, Agnes Pimental, Alice Haas and Helen Perry, all of Middletown, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Manuel D. Silveira II, Arthur D. Silveira, Anthony D. Silveira, Mary Soares, Margaret Corey, Rose Cardoza, Ida Borges and Laura Silveira.

Her funeral was held Feb. 16. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to the Vasco da Gama Holy Ghost Society, Fenner Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.

Chauncey Dewey

Chauncey Ffoulke Dewey, 69, of "Felicity" on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, formerly of Washington, D.C., died Feb. 14, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Elise (Archer) Dewey. Born in New York City May 30, 1932, he was the son of the late Albert B. and Gwendoline (Ffoulke) Dewey.

Mr. Dewey was a graduate of St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., and Yale University. While at Yale, he worked as a reporter for the New York Times. Following graduation, he worked as a loan officer at the First Penn Bank in Connecticut. He later worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., as director of the global industry department until his retirement in 1989.

Mr. Dewey retired to the Newport area in 1992 and in 1997 became the director of World Bank and European Bank for the Organization of the Privatization of Russia. He was a member and treasurer of the Preservation Society of Newport County, on the finance committee for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newport County and the Visiting Nurse Service of Newport County, on the board of directors for the US Naval War College Foundation and a former board member of the Newport Music Foundation.

He is survived by his wife, son Chauncey F. Dewey Jr. of Darien, Conn., daughters Elise Adams of Bethesda, Md., and Felicia Gudewill of Vancouver, British Columbia, and seven grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Albert B. Dewey.

His funeral was held Feb. 20. Burial was in St. Mary’s Episcopal Churchyard in Portsmouth. Donations in his memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, 02871.

Paul Fleming

Paul A. Fleming, 69, of Armstrong Place in Newport died Feb. 16, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport May 29, 1932, he was the son of the late Henry S. and Frances (McChesney) Fleming.

Mr. Fleming was a lifelong Newporter. He was employed by the Robert A. Randall sheet metal and roofing company for more than 25 years and later worked at Christie’s restaurant. He attended Rogers High School and served in the Army during the Korean War. He served on the board of directors for the Christian Action Center in Newport. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport.

He is survived by his companion Barbara A. Dopart, sons Michael P. Fleming of Portsmouth, James P. Fleming of Tampa, Fla., and John A. Fleming of Bristol, daughters Patricia Oliviera of San Diego, Calif., Margaret M. Wiggins of Portsmouth, Helen Bell of Jacksonville, Fla., Eileen Braman of Middletown and Elizabeth A. Santiago of Port Allen, La., brothers William Fleming of Grose Isle, Mich., and Arthur E. "Skip" Fleming, sisters Ann Palin of New Britain, Conn., and Agnes Fleming of West Springfield, Mass., 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Henry B. "Bernie" Fleming, Peter J. Fleming and Frances Parsonage.

His funeral was held Feb. 19. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association, PO Box 1357, Providence, RI 02901.

Alicia Heller

Alicia Bjork Heller died Feb. 15, 2002 at St. Clare Home in Newport. Born in Newport, she was the daughter of Alice (Gooley) and Edward Gustave Bjork.

A native of Newport, Ms. Heller lived in New York for many years and returned to Newport after the death of her first husband, Daniel Francis Galvin.

She is survived by her stepsons J. Michael Heller, John F. Heller, and Peter J. Heller, all of Newport, and daughter Kathleen L. Bocchino of Maine.

Her funeral was held Feb. 18. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840.

Shirley Heywood

Shirley Anne (Tufts) Heywood, 68, of Berkeley Avenue in Portsmouth, formerly of Westwood, Mass., died Feb. 13, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Donald T. Heywood. Born in Brockton, Mass., April 5, 1933, she was the daughter of Frank and Dorothy Tufts.

Mrs. Heywood attended the New England Conservatory of Music until she married in 1953. She was a pre-school teacher in the Boston area for many years until she became disable. As a paraplegic, she was active in promoting the rights of the disabled and founded the Newport County Disability Awareness Committee. She was an activist for environmental and animal rights issues. She was active in church affairs and was involved in many of the ministries at St. Mary’s Church in Portsmouth.

She is survived by her husband, son James Heywood of South Attleboro, Mass., daughters Anne Elizabeth Sullivan of North Attleboro, Mass., and Susan Dorothy Helms of San Antonio, Texas, and grandchildren Michael Helms, Amy Sullivan, Molly Sullivan and Kelly Sullivan.

Her funeral was held Feb. 19. Donations in her memory may be made to the Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.

John C. Peckham Sr.

John C. Peckham Sr., 65, of Wapping Road in Middletown died Feb. 17, 2002 at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the husband of Jeanne A. (Jolie) Peckham. Born in Newport Jan. 11, 1937, he was the son of Elizabeth (Conley) Peckham of Middletown and the late Philip M. Peckham.

Mr. Peckham was a custodian with the Middletown School Department until his retirement in 1982. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Middletown Fire Department. He had worked as a movie operator at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport and at the former Strand Theater. He enjoyed giving pony rides for the 4-H Fair and the Harvest Fair and working on his family farm in Middletown. He was an officer of the Aquidneck Grange No. 30, the Newport County Pomona Grange No. 4, the Rhode Islander State Grange and the National Grange. He was a past Pomona and State Grange Deputy and past state assistant steward of the Rhode Island State Grange. He was a 1955 graduate of Rogers High School and a graduate of the New England Institute of Technology.

He is survived by his wife, mother, son John C. Peckham Jr. of Middletown, daughter Cynthia L. Condry of Portsmouth, granddaughter Julia Grace Peckham, brother James W. Peckham of Middletown and sister Lenice E. Harrington of Portsmouth.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Aquidneck Grange No. 30

Carol Rodrigues

Carol Rodrigues, 63, of Heatherwood Health Care and Subacute Center in Newport died Feb. 16, 2002 at Heatherwood. Born in Middletown Nov. 2, 1938, she was the former wife of the late Manuel Francis Rodrigues.

She is survived by her sons Cliff Rodrigues of Newport, David Rodrigues of Chelsea, Mass., Jay Rodrigues of Cranston and James Rodrigues of Newport, daughter Caroline Rodrigues of Newport and grandson Jonathan Rodrigues of Newport.

Private funeral services were held. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Alta Santos

Alta "Allie" (Reynolds) Santos, 95, of Green End Avenue in Middletown, formerly of Brooks Avenue in Newport, died Feb. 14, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Antone "Tony" Santos Jr. Born in Tiverton Aug. 26, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Mary (Hart) Reynolds.

Mrs. Santos worked at the former Leys Century Store as a sales clerk for many years. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Church and an avid knitter.

She is survived by her grandson Daniel S. Konchar of Newport, granddaughter Kristine M. Sumner of Portsmouth, 10 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Lorraine Ann Roggero and the sister of the late Joseph Hassett and Myrtle Pike.

Her funeral was held Feb. 16. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 245 Waterman St., Suite 306, Providence, RI 02906.

Mary Sapp

Mary Elizabeth (Coffey) Sapp, 68, of Highland Avenue in Portsmouth died Feb. 16, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert Joseph Sapp. Born in Plainfield, Conn., June 11, 1933, she was the daughter of Eugene and Marion (Cone) Coffey.

She is survived by her sons Dennis Sapp of Fall River, Mass., and Paul Sapp of Portsmouth, daughters Nancy Sapp of Portsmouth, and Shari Sapp of Portsmouth, sister Helen Mercier of Canterbury, Conn., and three grandchildren.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
