Pauline Allen
Pauline E.M. (Peckham) Allen, 92, of Forest Avenue in Middletown, formerly of Green End Avenue in Middletown, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Dalton Allen, who passed away in 1989. Born in Middletown July 31, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin W.H. and Annie Laurie Peckham.
Mrs. Allen was born in the family home, "Maxwelton" on Green End Avenue and lived there her entire life. She graduated from Rogers High School and the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Providence. She worked as a billing clerk at Newport Electric Company for 42 years, retiring in 1972.
Mrs. Allen possessed a beautiful singing voice and sang in the choirs of St. Columba and St. John churches and also for many years in the Swanhurst Chorus. She was a lover of classical music and gardening. She excelled at needlepoint and was an avid amateur photographer. She and her husband loved to play golf and were members at the Wanumentonomy Golf and Country Club for many years.
She is survived by her nieces Prudence Silvia and Ruth Shepley, both of Middletown, Sally Cahill of Cotuit, Mass., and Anne Hatch of Texas, nephew Bradley Barlow of Middletown, cousin Priscilla Peckham of Middletown and many more nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Annie Laurie Winibel Goodchild, Ardelia Wyllie Peckham, Sarah Barlow, Benjamin W.H. Peckham, Gladys Shepley, Hope Kaull and Maxwell B.C. Peckham.
A graveside service was held Saturday, March 2, 2002. Burial was in the churchyard of St. Columba Berkley Memorial Chapel in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to Elizabeth Hussey Nursing Scholarship Fund, c/o Jan Dwyer, 4 Winthrop Drive, Middletown, RI 02842.
Helen Belmore
Helen Eva (Delekta) Belmore, 92, of Grand Islander Nursing Home in Middletown, formerly of Webster Street in Newport, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 at Grand Islander. Born in Warren June 4, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Grzrvan) Delekta.
Mrs. Belmore worked at the Torpedo Station during World War II and then at General Electric as an assembler for 30 years, retiring in 1974. She was a former member of St. Augustin’s Church. She loved her garden and she loved sewing for her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her son Donald J. Belmore of Portsmouth, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Clifford J. Belmore and Robert Belmore and sister of the late Ignatous Delekta, Edward Delekta, John Delekta, Sophie Griener, Florence McDonald, Stacey Delekta, Veronica Byrne and Catherine Delekta.

Anne Linnens
Anne Elizabeth (Philipovich) Linnens, 84, of Garfield Street in Newport died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence. She was the wife of Jack O. Linnens in Newport. Born in Lansford, Pa., July 26, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Emery and Rose (Chech) Philipovich.
Mrs. Linnens was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Newport, where she also served as an Eucharistic minister and CCD teacher. During the 1960s, she was a member of the Jr. Catholic Daughters and a Brownie scout leader. Mrs. Linnens had served as past president of the Oliver Hazard Memorial School Mothers Club and the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Joseph’s Church. From 1975-79, Mr. and Mrs. Linnens served as foster parents.
She is survived by her husband, son John Minor Linnens of Harwich, Mass., daughters Paula H. Ulanowski of Scituate, Mass., and Claudia Anne Linnens of Alexandria, Va., brother John Philipovich of Tamaqua, Pa., sisters Agnes Patricia Rochford of Bethlehem, Pa., and Pauline Metz of Somerville, NJ, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her funeral was held Monday, March 4, 2002 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. Kimberly Zerbus-Jacome
Kimberly Margaret Zerbus-Jacome, 35, of Sunset Avenue in Portsmouth died Friday, March 1, 2002 at home. Born in Fall River, Mass., April 28, 1966, she was the daughter of Joseph G. and Verna (Lawton) Zerbus of Portsmouth.
Ms. Zerbus-Jacome was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Diamond Regional School of Nursing, where she received her LPN. She worked at Newport Hospital, Corrigan Mental Health in Fall River and Healthy Horizons in Portsmouth. She was also a Reikki master.
She is survived by her parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her funeral was held Monday, March 4, 2002 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
Lila Barile
Lila Pauline Barile, 90, of Beechland Place in Middletown, formerly of Oxbow Farms in Middletown, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Vincent James Barile. Born in Jamestown, N.Y., July 27, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Mae Anderson.
Mrs. Barile was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughters Mary Jean Derby of Boulder, Colo., Virginia Peters of El Monte, Calif., Barbara J. Christensen of Middletown, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Michael V. Barile and the sister of the late Roger Anderson, Wilbur Anderson, Helen Arnold and Frances Christensen.

Wayne Barretto
Wayne N. Barretto, 32, of Park Avenue in Portsmouth died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 18, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Fall River, Mass., Dec. 24, 1969, he was the son of Mary (Correira) Barretto of Portsmouth and the late Joseph Barretto Sr.
For the last 15 years, Mr. Barretto worked as a carpenter with his brother at Custom Building in Portsmouth, doing home renovations and building. He also owned WB Landscaping in Portsmouth, doing home landscaping and snowplowing. Mr. Barretto was a member of the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed water sports, especially jet skiing, and country western dancing.
He is survived by his mother, son Ean Barretto of Portsmouth, brother Joseph Barretto of Portsmouth, sisters Pauline Hayes of Swansea, Mass., and Geraldine Barretto of Plymouth, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 23 at Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth. Burial was in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.
Mary "Betty" Connell
Mary E. "Betty" Connell, 68, of West Shore Road in Portsmouth died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport May 20, 1933, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Mary Catherine (Malone) Connell.
Miss Connell worked for more than 40 years as a bookkeeper for the Newport Electric Corporation in Newport. She retired in the early 1990s. She was an avid tennis player and at one time won the Newport City Tennis Championship. She was very instrumental with the organization of the Pop Flack tennis courts in Newport. She was known for her volunteering at the old Fifth Ward outings at Morton Park many years ago. She was a graduate of the former St. Augustin Grammar School in Newport and the former St. Catherine’s Academy in Newport, class of 1950.
She is survived by her brothers John J. "Oakie" Connell and Philip M. Connell, both of Newport, and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Francis J. Connell and George Connell and was the longtime companion of the late Norman Hall.
Her funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday, March 1 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Augustin Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport. Elizabeth Corr
Elizabeth F. Corr, 76, of Perry Avenue in Middletown died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Henry F. Corr. Born in Newport April 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Orville O. Dowler and Mildred E. (Sherman) Dowler Waters and the stepdaughter of the late Thomas V. Waters.
Mrs. Corr was a parishioner of St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown and a former parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport. She was an avid oil and watercolor painter and loved working in her garden.
She is survived by her sons Henry F. Corr Jr. of Providence, Michael Corr of Newport, Stephen T. Corr and Timothy D. Corr, both of Middletown, daughters Millie Singleton of Portsmouth and Anne E. Hagen of Ledyard, Conn., brother Thomas Waters of North Kingstown, sisters Eugenie Dalicandro of North Kingstown and Eileen Sequeira of Wakefield and seven grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Orville O. "Bud" Dowler Jr.
Her funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Gary Kelleyhouse
Gary T. Kelleyhouse, 48, of Carroll Avenue in Newport died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002 at home. Born in Newport May 8, 1953, he was the son of the late Gordon Thurston and Elizabeth Mary (Watts) Kelleyhouse.
Mr. Kelleyhouse was a 1971 graduate of Rogers High School and worked at Newport Hospital for most of his career. He played on the hospital’s softball league and for other Newport leagues. He was an avid New York Yankees fan.
He is survived by his son Matthew W. Faria of Saunderstown and brother Gordon Michael Kelleyhouse of Bristol.

Emile Lamoureux
Emile Joseph Lamoureux, 77, of Nakomis Road in Middletown died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Therese Alice (Lariviere) Lamoureux. Born in Woonsocket Jan. 5, 1925, he was the son of the late Rudolphe and Elwinda (Chevette) Lamoureux.
Mr. Lamoureux served in the US Navy for 20 years. While stationed in Bremington, Wash., he played on the Navy softball team, which won the league championship. After his time in the Navy, he joined the Naval Undersea Warfare Center as a training specialist, retiring in 1980. He then went to work for the former Gould Corporation until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of St. Lucy’s Church, the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 19, the K of C Middletown Council 4201 and the VFW in Middletown. He was a founder of the Middletown Pop Warner league during the 1960s.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, son Michael R. Lamoureux of Bloomington, Ind., daughter Michelle C. Freitas of Middletown and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Leo Lamoureux and Raymond Lamoureux.
His funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 23 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
Jean Louise Lutz
Jean Louise Lutz, 93, formerly of Park Street in Newport, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. Born in Newport April 3, 1908, she was the daughter of the late George Reed and Mary Catherine (O’Neill) Lutz.
A registered nurse, Miss Lutz worked at Newport Hospital, Bennington Hospital in Vermont, in Washington, D.C., and at the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital in New York City. She retired in 1974. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Newport and a member of the St. Joseph Seniors. She was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Miss Lutz was a 1925 graduate of Rogers High School and the Newport School for Nursing.
She is survived by five nephews and two nieces. She was the sister of the late Mary Catherine Boyd and Margaret R. "Margie" Pascoe.
Her funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 27 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. Anne McElwee
Anne McElwee, 90, of Newport died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2002 at the St. Clare Home, Spring Street, Newport. Born in Scotland June 6, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Alice (Duffy) McElwee.
Miss McElwee emigrated from Scotland in 1929. She had worked for the Columbia Broadcast Company for 23 years and lived in New York for more than 40 years. For many years she and her family summered in Newport, and she came here to live after her retirement in 1973.
She is survived by her sisters Susan Strong and May Duncan, both of the St. Clare Home, and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Scotland.

Maynard McLaughlin
Maynard Henry McLaughlin, 70, of Sylvan Terrace in Newport died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Joan Marie (Ortiz) McLaughlin. Born in Alliston, Ala., March 4, 1931, he was the son of the late Maynard H. and Emily (Shaw) McLaughlin.
Mr. McLaughlin was an executive pilot in private service. He was a machinist 1st class in the US Navy during World War II. He was called back for service during the Korean War. He retired after 18 years of Naval service. After World War II, he worked for Bove Chevrolet from 1948 until 1962, then joined Williams and Manchester shipyard before working for Newport Oil Corporation as operations manager. In 1990 he eared his commercial pilot’s license. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Newport and Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association of America. He enjoyed gardening and cooking as well as golf and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, sons Michael S. McLaughlin of Abilene, Texas, and Patrick K. McLaughlin of Middletown, daughters Joan M. Rice of Maynard, Mass., and Carol Ann Smith of Richford, N.Y., brother George McLaughlin of Coltsneck, N.J., and eight grandchildren.
His funeral was held Monday, Feb. 25 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church in Newport. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Anthony "Gene" Reis
Anthony Eugene "Gene" Reis, 71, of Stockholm Street in Newport died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Doreen M. Ashcroft Reis. He was the companion of Irene J. O’Marrah of Newport. Born in Fall River, Mass., July 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Antonio and Clementine (Botelho) Reis.
Mr. Reis had lived in Newport most of his life and for the past 15 years had worked for the T.J. Brown Landscaping Company in Newport. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Augustin Church in Newport and was a life member of the Newport Knights of Columbus Council 256 and was an honorary member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Newport. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and served in the Korean War.
He is survived by his companion, sons John Eugene Reis of Middletown and Anthony J. Reis of Port Ritchie, Fla., brother Albert Reis of Portsmouth, sisters Alice Burman of Newport and Mary Jungbauer of St. Paul, Minn., and two granddaughters. He was the brother of the late Catherine Seward.

Gertrude "Ma" Smyth
Gertrude "Ma" (Scoville) Smyth, 87, of Russell Avenue in Newport died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late William C. "Bro" Smyth. Born in Newport July 13, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Etta (Tripp) Scoville.
Mrs. Smyth was an assistant clerk with the City of Newport for 20 years, retiring in 1976.
She is survived by her sons William C. Smyth Jr. and Harry S. Smyth, both of Newport, daughter Dianne G. Woodward of Goose Creek, S.C., 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral was held Monday, Feb. 25 at Hambly Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in Island Annex Cemetery in Newport.
Candace Van Alen, 89
Candace Van Alen, 89, a high-spirited former journalist, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 at her home in Old Brookville, N.Y.
Born in Louisville, Ky., March 28, 1912, she graduated from Rosemary Hall in Greenwich, Conn., and Vassar College, where she majored in political science and economics. She also did graduate work at Radcliffe, Columbia and the Sorbonne.
Widely traveled, Mrs. Van Alen worked as a public relations executive in New York City and as a Paris correspondent for the International News Service. She was a columnist for the New York Daily News and an editorial writer for the New York Herald Tribune where she was also the assistant to the publisher, Whitelaw Reid.
After marrying James H. Van Alen in 1948, the two wrote a series of articles on Africa for the North American Newspaper Alliance.
From 1957 until 1963, she was a contributing editor to Vogue magazine; one of Mrs. Van Alen’s articles for Vogue featured a story identifying Newport firsts.
A familiar figure in Newport, New York City, and Palm Beach, Mrs. Van Alen was devoted to numerous charitable causes, among them the Red Cross Ball in Palm Beach. Working to raise funds for philanthropy, she also chaired the International Debutante Cotillion almost from its beginning and for years directed the April in Paris Ball in New York.
Ever encouraging her husband in his progressive ideas regarding tennis, Mrs. Van Alen suggested to him that the game should have its own Hall of Fame. Acting on her proposal, Mr. Van Alen persuaded the U.S. Tennis Association to establish the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Casino in Newport, the site of the inaugural national championships in 1881.
Last year, reflecting the couple’s interest in history and literature, she directed the James H. and Candace Van Alen Foundation to contribute one million dollars to the Redwood Library’s restoration and renewal campaign — a gift that will create the James H. and Candace Van Alen Gallery at the Redwood in Newport.
She is survived by her brother Wallace B. Alig of Endinburgh, Scotland and stepson James L. Van Alen of Millbrook, N.Y. Burial at St. Columba’s Chapel in Middletown was private. A memorial service will be held in Newport in July.
Gerald "Gerry" Braswell
Gerald Allen "Gerry" Braswell, 52, of Wesley Street in Newport died Friday, March 8, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Newport Jan. 26, 1950, he was the son of Josephine (Nasser) Braswell of Newport and the late John E. Braswell.
Mr. Braswell was a 1967 graduate of Rogers High School. He was the former owner and chef of the Arabian Knights in Newport. Most recently, he was a musician and songwriter.
He is survived by his mother, son Michael Turgeon of Warwick, brother Donald Braswell of North Providence, sister Barbara Braswell of Bethesda, Md., aunt Rosamond Poulin of Silver Springs, Md., and three granddaughters.
His funeral was held March 11. Burial was private.
Charles Crouch
Col. Charles W. Crouch, US Army Ret., 72, of Young Drive in Portsmouth died Monday, March 4, 2002 at the Escape at the Gap Hotel in Barbados. He was the husband of Caroline (Richmond) Crouch. Born in Charlotte, NC, March 21, 1929, he was the son of the late Walter W. and Myrtle (Thornton) Crouch.
Col. Crouch served in the US Army for seven years in Korea and Germany in various divisions. He then went on the serve in the Army Reserves for 29 years, retiring in 1983. From 1980 until 1983, he served as commandant of the 1037 US Army Reserve School. He also served in the 762nd Tank Battalion from 1959-61, and the 9th Battalion Armor 187th Infantry Brigade as operations officer and executive officer from 1961-68. From 1968-80, he served in the 9 Army Reserve Command, during which time he served as Assistant G3 and G3 Operations and Training Offices of the Command. He received many medals and awards, including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
Col. Crouch was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, where he was active with the soup kitchen. He served as vice president of the Portsmouth Historical Society and was on the board of the Glen Manor House Authority. He was the owner and operator of Benjamin Fish Antiques of Portsmouth and was named antique dealer of the year in 1993. He was a member of the Southern New England Antique Dealers Association and the Johnnycake Society. He had also been the owner and operator of the Gristmill Restaurant in Seekonk, Mass., and the Mt. Hope Marina House Restaurant in Portsmouth. He was a graduate of Norwich University, where he was a member of the ROTC program, the Providence Country Day School and St. Andrews in Barrington.
He is survived by his wife, stepfather Webster Goodwin of Warwick, stepsons John Corbishley Jr. of Portsmouth, Matthew Corbishley of Warwick and Mark Corbishley of Mobile, Ala., cousin Barbara Macintosh Kissak of Chepachet, five grandchildren, and stepbrothers Webster Goodwin Jr. of Barrington and John Goodwin of Cranston.

Anne Damas
Anne Regina (Ciarla) Damas, 93, of Aquidneck Place in Portsmouth, formerly of Shangri-La Lane in Middletown, died Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. Waldemar Noya Damas, who died in combat in Germany in 1944. Born in Newport Sept. 29, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Pietro and Angline (Messore) Ciarla.
Mrs. Damas worked as a receptionist/secretary with the Newport Chamber of Commerce until 1993. She was a member of St. Lucy’s Church and the Newport Navy Wives.
She is survived by her son Stephen Damas of Middletown and grandson Jason Damas of Boston, Mass. She was the sister of the late Peter Ciarla and Louise Leary.
Her funeral will be held at 9 a.m. March 16 at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road in Middletown. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery April 12. Mary Keavy
Mary G. Keavy, 93, a resident of the St. Clare Home on Spring Street in Newport died Thursday, March 7, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Raymond F. Keavy and the late Joseph E. DeCosta. Born in Providence April 27, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Isabelle (Viera) Paiva.
Mrs. Keavy was raised in Warren and moved to Newport in the 1930s. She worked at the Newport Naval Torpedo Station during World War II and for the former Vernon Court Junior College in Newport as dean of women during the 1960s. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport and was an active volunteer at the Edward King Center in Newport. After her retirement, she traveled extensively and especially enjoyed European vacations.
She is survived by her daughter Dolores A. Costello of Middletown, brothers Frank Paiva and Arthur Paiva, both of Newport, and George Paiva of Yonkers, NY, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Isabelle Hussey Von Dembowski and sister of the late Manuel Paiva, Joseph Paiva and Anthony Paiva.
A Mass of Christian burial was held March 11. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840.
Terrence "Terry" Murphy
Terrence Michael "Terry" Murphy, 50, of Kodiak Island, Ala., formerly of Newport, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2002 at the Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Ala. Born in Newport Dec. 29, 1951, he was the son of John M. "Bud" Murphy of East Providence and Arizona and the late Julia A. (Malvey) Murphy.
Mr. Murphy was a commercial fisherman in Newport for 16 years and Kodiak for the past 14 years. He was a 1970 graduate of Rogers High School and attended the University of Rhode Island. He moved to Alaska in 1988.
He is survived by his father, brothers Peter F. Murphy of Albuquerque, N.M., and John J. Murphy Jr. of Middletown, sisters Sheila P. Cooper of Portsmouth and Colleen E. Atkins of Middletown, two nieces of two nephews.
His funeral was held March 5. Donations in his memory may be made to the Seaman’s Church Institute, 18 Market Square, Newport, RI 02840.
Cathleen Purdy
Cathleen Nagle Purdy, 66, of Groton, Conn., formerly of Newport, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn. She was the wife of Walter E. Purdy Jr. Born in Newport Nov. 21, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Philip C. and Mary B. (McKenna) Nagle.
Mrs. Purdy lived in Newport most of her life before moving to Groton 10 years ago. She was a graduate of the former St. Mary’s Grammar School, the former St. Catherine’s Academy and Johnson and Wales College in Providence.
She is survived by her husband, son Walter E. Purdy III of Fairfax, Va., daughters Elizabeth A. Bastiani of Greensboro, NC, Cathleen N. Purdy of Portsmouth, Patricia M. Ryan of Groton, Conn., and Anne M. Dzwill of Pompano Beach, Fla., brother William D. Nagle of Newport, sisters Mary Sheekey of Newport and Elizabeth Bullock of McClain, Va., and 12 grandchildren.
Her funeral was held March 2. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Catholic Charities of Rhode Island.
