John Silvia
John Joseph Silvia, 76, of Bayview Park in Middletown, formerly of Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret A. (Gramolini) Silvia of Middletown. Born in Middletown Dec. 10, 1925, he was the son of the late John Anthony and Mary D. (Soeria) Silvia.
Mr. Silvia worked for Frank Flowers, Bacon & McLeach and for the Sulbro Corporation as a carpenter until his retirement in 2000. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1954. He was a charter member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus, where he was a grand knight from 1968-70. He was president of the Seven Castles Club, a member of the former Newport Saltwater Fishing Club and a member of the Green Valley Country Club. He was an avid golfer and loved fishing.
He is survived by his wife, son John A. Silvia of Portsmouth, daughter Margaret S. Glenn of Knoxville, Tenn., and granddaughters Janet Glenn of Knoxville, Dawn Rutkowski of Fort Worth, Texas, and Joy Douglas of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mary Silvia
Mary E. Silvia, 91, of Paradise Brook Farm Road in Middletown, formerly of Kay Boulevard in Middletown, died Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Briar Cliff Manor in Johnston. She was the wife of the late Manuel E. Silvia. Born in Middletown Aug. 5, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Delphine (Moitoza) Furtado.
In 1926, Mrs. Silvia was active in the group that established and built Jesus Saviour Church in Newport. She was also a founder of the Holy Ghost Feast at Jesus Saviour Church and hosted the church’s first "dominga" at her home in 1956. She was a past president and life member of the Rosary Solidarity of Jesus Saviour Church and a charter member of the Portuguese American Women’s Civic League of Newport and the Vasco da Gama Holy Ghost Society.
She is survived by her daughters Mary C. Souza of Middletown, Del E. Driscoll of Coventry and Ann Marie Silvia of Middletown, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was the sister of the late Joseph Furtado, Manuel Furtado, Delphine Dutra and Margaret Moore.
Her funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 13 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
Mary Foss
Mary L. Foss, 90, of Valley Road in Middletown died Friday, May 31, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Faye S. Foss. Born in Mongardino, D’Asti, Italy Feb. 23, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Camillo F. and Margherita A. (Conti) Rolando.
Mrs. Foss had lived in Newport since 1915 and moved to Middletown in 1999. She was employed as a clerk at the Naval Underwater System Center and the former Naval Torpedo Station. She was employed in the federal civil service for 15 years. She was a member of the Court Newport No. 110 of the Catholic Daughters, the St. Joseph’s Senior Citizens, the Middletown Senior Citizens and the Middletown Town Howlers Square Dance Club. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph’s Church.
She is survived by her daughter Judith C. Womack of Hyde Park, Vt., son Stephen F. Foss of Canaan, Maine, sisters Rose O’Dell and Rita A. Sullivan, both of Newport, brothers Louis J. Rolando of Dunnellon, Fla., and Alfred S. Rolando of Newport, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Linda C. Wilson and the sister of the late Mario P. Rolando and Joseph P. Rolando.
Her funeral was held Tuesday, June 4 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Christine Huss
Christine E. (Caufield) Huss, 80, of Quaker Manor in Portsmouth, formerly of Old Ford Road in Newport, died Friday, May 31, 2002 at Village House in Newport. She was the wife of the late Douglas P. Huss. Born in Newport Feb. 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Daniel T. and Margaret (McCarthy) Caufield.
A 1940 graduate of Rogers High School, Mrs. Huss received recognition as a secretary for Newport’s Mayor McCauley. During World War II, she worked at the torpedo station on Goat Island. She enjoyed her life as a homemaker and seamstress. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church and the Portsmouth Senior Center.
She is survived by her daughters Rev. Dorothy M. Huss Ward of Newport, M. Ellen Milligan of Snellville, Ga., Christine M. Laurin of Portsmouth and Marie D. Gallagher of North Berwick, Maine, 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ellen Sullivan and Dorothy Caufield.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday, June 4 at St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
Joseph Kirwin II
Joseph P. "Jay" Kirwin II, 57, of "Nethercliffe" on Ruggles Avenue in Newport died Sunday, June 2, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Mary Ellen (Dwyer) Kirwin. Born in Coronado, Calif., April 16, 1945, he was the son of Patricia (Olds) Kirwin of Newport and the late Joseph F. Kirwin.
Mr. Kirwin was president of the J.P. Kirwin Electric Company and Kirwin Real Estate Development. He was a 1963 graduate of the former De La Salle Academy in Newport and a 1967 graduate of Fairfield University. He was an avid athlete, competing in eight Ocean State marathons. He was one of the founders of the Newport Rugby Club and a player for many years. He served on the Newport Zoning Board of Review. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a past member of the redevelopment committee and a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Casey E. Kirwin, Paige Michol Kirwin-Clair and Alexandra Woods Phelan, all of Newport, sisters Patricia A. Folliard and Elizabeth Kirwin, both of Newport, brothers Garrett O. Kirwin, Christopher Kirwin, Terrance Kirwin, all of Newport, and Peter J. Kirwin and Stephen D. Kirwin, both of Portsmouth, and grandson Collin Clair of Newport.
His funeral was held Wednesday, June 5 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Church in Newport. Burial was private. James Protulis
James C. Protulis, 76, of New York City, formerly of Newport, died Saturday, June 1, 2002. Born in Boston Jan. 29, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Toula (Aramvoglu) Protulis.
Mr. Protulis was a graduate of Rogers High School. He went on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a chemical engineering degree in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army before receiving a master’s degree in economics from Columbia University. He worked in the financial markets in New York City as a block trader for institutional investors on Wall Street.
He is survived by his sister Demetra Protulis of Dallas, Texas, two nephews and three great-nephews.
His funeral was held Wednesday, June 5 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a service at St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church in Newport. Burial was in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown.
Mary Richards
Mary A. Richards, 62, of Middletown, formerly of Cumberland, died Monday, May 27, 2002 at Newport Hospital. Born in Springfield, Mass., Dec. 20, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Cedric Richards and Mary Marjorie (O’Brien) Richards.
Ms. Richards was a pastry chef and worked at Bliss Dairy in Attleboro, Mass. She was also an artist who worked in many mediums, including oil painting, furniture and pottery. She received a degree in graphic arts from New England Tech in 2000.
She is survived by her daughters Pamela Martin of Cumberland and Jacque Noard and Barbara Barhite, both of Bremerton, Wash., brother Anthony Richards of East Longmeadow, Mass., three granddaughters and one grandson.

Dean Roeske
Dean Carlton Roeske, 71, of Philips Avenue in Middletown died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Christina Margaret (Seery) Roeske. Born in Bloomington, Ill., Jan. 20, 1931, he was the son of the late Frank and Emma (Brayton) Roeske.
Mr. Roeske retired in 1967 from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service as a chief boatswain mate. He worked at the Newport Shipyard as a rigger, working on several America’s Cup boats, including Courageous and Intrepid, from 1967 until 1972. For the next 20 years, he worked at NUSC. After his retirement, he received a citation from the Secretary of the Navy for 40 years of service. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 19 and a past member of Green Valley Country Club. He was an avid fisher and bowler.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, sons David Roeske of Tiverton and Steven Dean Roeske of Middletown, daughter Barbara Ann Crisman of Palm Bay, Fla., brother Franklin Roeske of Bloomington, Ill., and four grandchildren.
His funeral was held Saturday, June 1 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
Elizabeth Smith
Elizabeth Ann (Weiser) Smith, 75, of Gibbs Avenue in Newport died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late William T. Smith. Born in Santa Paula, Calif., Oct. 9, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Saint Paul and Katherine (Konda) Lindsay.
Mrs. Smith moved to Newport in 1957. She worked at Corcoran, Peckham and Hayes as a bookeeper before owning and operating the Beth Shan bed and breakfast. She was a past president and member of the Mosaic Club of Newport, a past president of the Republican Women’s Club and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her son Capt. William T. Smith III of Indialantic, Fla., daughters Deborah Connell and Lindsay Mullins, both of Portsmouth, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Victor Belloni
Victor L. Belloni, 82, of Mount Hope Avenue in Jamestown, formerly of Newport, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of Margaret A. (Dowling) Belloni. Born in Newport Jan. 20, 1920, he was the son of the late Joseph and Celestina Belloni.
Mr. Belloni was a 1939 graduate of the former De La Salle Academy in Newport. A parishioner of St. Mark’s Church in Jamestown, he worked at the freight office of the New Haven Railroad in Newport and as a postal clerk at the Newport Post Office, retiring in 1980. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving two years in Europe.
He is survived by his wife and son Paul L. Belloni of Chicago. He was the brother of the late Joseph V. Belloni and Frank D. Belloni.

John Boiani
John Boiani, 92, of Eustis Avenue in Newport died Monday, June 17, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Louise (Silva) Boiani. Born in Newport June 24, 1909, he was the son of the late Rudolpho and Aurelia Boiani.
Mr. Boiani worked for the Naval Public Works Department as a lead man. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School and De La Salle Academy. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church, a past commander of the Portsmouth American Legion and a member of the Sachuest Salt Water Fishing Club and the Naval Public Works’ bowling league. He was an avid fisherman, quahogger and lobsterman.
He is survived by his son Rudolph Boiani of Newport, granddaughter Kimberly Sue Boiani of Newport, great-granddaughter Kassandra Louisa Boiani of Newport and great-grandson Christopher Alan Boiani of Newport. He was the brother of the late Aldo Boiani, Evelyn Trifero and Myra Sonego.
His funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 20 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.
Josephine Cimaglia
Josephine K. (Ripa) Cimaglia, 86, of McCormick Road in Newport died Friday, June 7, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles Cimaglia. Born in Newport Jan. 20, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Carmelo and Lucy (Ribera) Ripa.
Mrs. Cimaglia worked at the former Monowatt General Electric Company in Newport and for the state’s hot lunch program, retiring in 1985. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Augustin Church in Newport.
She is survived by her sons Charles A. "Tony" Cimaglia of Newport and James R. "Ron" Cimaglia of Saunderstown, stepdaughter Lorraine Seward of Staten Island, N.Y., sisters Anna Sanflippo and Victoria Perry, both of Newport, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Sebastian "Marca" Ripa, Isabel Behan and Lena Bonci.

James Ferris
James A. Ferris, 82, of North Kingstown, formerly of East Street in Newport, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Kent County Hospital. He was the husband of Lillian (Rehn) Ferris. Born in Newport Sept. 14, 1919, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James A. Ferris.
Mr. Ferris worked for the postal service until his retirement. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, sons Buzz Ferris of Newport, Richard Ferris of North Kingstown, David Ferris of North Highland, Calif., and Jeffrey Ferris of Middletown, daughters Priscilla Escajeda of Middletown and Barbara Sprague of Portsmouth, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Dorothy Frost
Dr. Dorothy Rose (Whitford) Frost, 91, of John Clarke Retirement Center in Middletown, formerly of North Kingstown, died Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. William M. Frost. Born in Stockton, Calif., March 13, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Carl Garfield Whitford and the late Claire Jane (Rose) Whitford.
Dr. Frost was a teacher and educator for 50 years, retiring in 1983 from Tenafly Middle School in Tenafly, N.J., as an English and Latin teacher and guidance counselor. She earned her bachelor’s degree in language from the University of Redlands in California, her master’s degree in English from Texas Western University and her doctorate in education from the University of the Pacific in California. She was a writer of children’s books and articles for Christian publications.
Dr. Frost moved to North Kingstown from New Jersey in 1983 and to the John Clarke Retirement Center in September 2001. She was a member of the United Congregational Church in Middletown, where she had served as a deacon, originated the Altar Guild and was a member of Generations and the Board of Missions. She was a member and former chairwoman of the hospitality and decorating committees and was a tireless caregiver to homebound members and friends of the church. She was an avid reader, a talented pianist and enjoyed gardening, traveling and cross-stitching.
She is survived by her sons Rev. William Mason Frost of Colchester, Conn., Robert Mason Frost of West Warwick and John Mason Frost of Tiverton, daughter Elizabeth Joan Fowler of Staten Island, N.Y., 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Carl Whitford.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29 at United Congregational Church, intersection of Valley Road and Green End Avenue, Middletown. Edith Hall
Edith Ferguson Hall, 86, of Valley Road in Middletown, formerly of Roseland, N.J., died Friday, June 14, 2002 at home. Born in Belleville, N.J., Jan. 19, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine (Edwards) Ferguson.
Mrs. Hall was a 1938 graduate of Rutgers University in Newark, N.J. She was a member of the Salve Regina Circle of Scholars. She worked as an administrator in the unemployment office for the State of New Jersey. She was an ardent supporter of conservation causes.
She is survived by her sons John Hall of Stockholm, N.J., and Charles Hall of Sedgwick, Maine, grandchildren Justus Robin Hall and Oliver Fergus Hall, both of Sedgwick.

Mabel Hartsaw
Mabel R. (Smallridge) Hartsaw, 95, of Pensacola, Fla., formerly of Indian Avenue in Portsmouth, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. She was the wife of the late Theodore Hartsaw. Born in Russell, Ky., May 27, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Effie (Hodges) Smallridge.
Formerly of Holden, W.V., Mrs. Hartsaw had worked for more than 45 years as an elementary school teacher before retiring from the Logan County (W.V.) public school system. She moved to Portsmouth from Holden in 1985 and to Pensacola in 1997. She had attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown. She enjoyed cross-stitching and traveling.
She is survived by her son David R. Hartsaw of Pensacola, daughter Ruth Alley of Middletown and three grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Dallas Smallridge, Loreen Young and Aileen Young.
A graveside funeral service was held Wednesday, June 19 at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Arrangements were by the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
Robert Hoskins
Robert F. "Bobby" Hoskins, 93, formerly of Yale Street in Newport, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport. He was the husband of the late Estelle M. (Murphy) Hoskins. Born in Royersford, Pa., May 8, 1909, he was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Razer) Hoskins.
Mr. Hoskins was a graduate of Stephen Girard College in Philadelphia. He came to Newport at the age of 23 to work at the Newport Gas Company, where he was employed for 30 years, retiring in 1974. During World War II, he worked at the torpedo station. He was a softball coach for the Milgrim Secretarial School and his wife was one of the star players. An avid sport fisherman, he was the co-founder of the Newport County Saltwater Fishing Club and served as its president and secretary. In 1960 he landed a 47-pound striped bass, which was his largest catch. He was a member of the Middletown Town Howlers Square Dancing Club. With his wife, he was a member of the Century Club, having danced to 100 different callers throughout the New England area. He developed the Rhody Rover Badge for the R.I. Federation of Square Dance Clubs.
He is survived by his daughters Alice E. Hoskins of Portsmouth and Roberta M. Schwartz of Middletown, granddaughters Amy E. Mullen and Susan M. Schwartz and great-granddaughter Molly Catherine Mullen. He was the brother of the late Joseph Hoskins and Ethel Mattingly.

Robert Kain
Robert M. Kain, 79, of Baker Road in Portsmouth, formerly of Newport Avenue in Newport, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at home. He was the husband of the late Mildred (Thompson) Kain. Born in Newport Dec. 24, 1922, he was the son of the late William P. and Deloria (Carrigan) Kain.
Mr. Kain worked at Quonset Point for more than 30 years as a mechanical engineer, then for five years for the Newport Housing Authority. He was active with the Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years. He was on the Eagle Board of Review, was the Cubmaster of Pack 24 at Coggeshall School for more than 25 years and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a US Navy veteran of the Neutrality Patrol, serving in World War II and Korea. He was a member of the junior Chamber of Commerce, a life member of the Newport Lodge of Elks, the VFW, the DAV and the Newport Yacht Club. He was a Sunday school teacher for more than 10 years at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Newport.
He is survived by his son Capt. Robert T. Kain, US Army Ret. of Portsmouth, daughter Darlene Collins of Portsmouth, brother Leo Kain of Ellenton, Fla., and grandsons Robert B. Kain, August M. Kain, David M. Kain and Todd J. Collins. He was the brother of the late William "Perry" Carrigan.

Alexander LaLumia
Alexander G. LaLumia, 76, of Newport died unexpectedly Friday, May 31, 2002 in China while on a business trip. He was the husband of Sandra A. LaLumia. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, May 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Emmanuel and Anna (Santangelo) LaLumia.
Mr. LaLumia was the proprietor of Christmas by the Sea and Christmas on Thames Street in Newport. He was the owner of Alsan Company, a designer and importer of Christmas ornaments. He moved to Newport in 1981 and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Newport and St. Dominic Church in Youngstown, Ohio, where he served as an Eucharistic minister. At St. Dominic, he was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Third Order of St. Dominic’s and the Parish Council. He was an assistant professor at Youngstown State University and served in the US Army during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge.
He is survived by his wife; daughters Beth Ann LaLumia and Alexa LaLumia Flynn, both of Newport, Jomarie Fabian of Coventry, Anna Gustafson of Berkley, Mass., Terry LaLumia-Briggs of Taunton, Mass., and Maura Amaral of West Warwick; stepsons Eric Pastman of East Windsor, NJ, and Steven Pastman of Milford, NH; sister Maryann Hoffman of Youngstown, Ohio; two half-brothers; three half-sisters, 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Phyllis Helena (Stewart) Moberg, 93, formerly of Blenheim-Newport, Middletown and High Street in Jamestown died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Erik Moberg. Born in Boston Nov. 2, 1908, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Grace (Noonan) Stewart.
Mrs. Moberg was a 1933 graduate of Waltham Training School for Nurses. She began her career working in the Boston Lying In Hospital, then worked for the Waltham Hospital and Taunton Modern Hospital in Obstetrics. She joined the Army in 1945 and served in Germany, Japan, Guam and the Philippines. She retired in 1965 as a major, then worked in the Newport Naval Hospital, Jamestown School and Camp Seaside in Jamestown. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Conanicut Garden Club, Friends of the Jamestown Library, St. Matthew’s Parish and the Jamestown Housing Authority. She was a past president of the National Women’s Club of Jamestown, which continued the fight for women’s rights.
She is survived by her stepdaughter Carol Curt of Newport, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was the stepmother of the late Adele Garand and the grandmother of the late Donald Dupre Jr.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 24 at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter.
Reginald Nalle Sr.
Sgt. Reginald Daniel Nalle Sr., Ret. Newport Police Department, 75, of DeSoto, Texas, formerly of Newport, died Monday, June 10, 2002 at Lancaster Medical Center in Lancaster, Texas. He was the husband of Lillian Mary (Moore) Nalle. Born in Newport Jan. 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Fred and Mabel (Shaggerford) Nalle.
Mr. Nalle served in the US Navy during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii. He joined the Newport Police Department in 1951 and became sergeant in 1967. He retired in 1976 after 25 years of service. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Fraternal Order of Police before moving to Texas in 1992.
He is survived by his wife, son Reginald Nalle Jr. of Newport, daughters Regina Preston of Chicago, Doris Fields of DeSoto and Cheryl Nalle of Arlington, Texas, 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Charles Nalle and the brother of the late Fred Douglas Nalle, John Nalle and Will Nalle.
His funeral was held Monday, June 17 at Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Diabetes Foundation of Rhode Island, 209 Cottage St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
Georga Swanner
Georga Alice (Cochran) Swanner, 90, of Tilley Avenue in Newport died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. She was the wife of Linden Ray Swanner. Born in Paducah, Ky., Dec. 29, 1911, she was the daughter of the late A.B. and Rosa (Mitchell) Cochran.
A professional legal secretary, Mrs. Swanner had worked for the former Lewis & O’Brien law offices for many years. She enjoyed gardening and had won several awards for her work. She had won the Newport County best garden award from 1957-59.
She is survived by her husband, daughter Bernadine Emmett of Ashland, Va., and grandchildren Sally Emmett Dwyer of Newport, Vicki Emmett Fox of Virginia and Elizabeth Emmett of Virginia.
