Stella A. Martel, 94, formerly of Cumberland St. died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Lorette DeVito of Johnston. She was the wife of the late Joseph R. Martel.
Born in Lincoln she was the daughter of the late John and Katherine (Dulak) Pietras. She was a life long Cumberland resident.
She was employed by the original Ann & Hope Textile Mills until it became the Ann & Hope Discount Outlet. She had worked with those entities for a total of fifty years until her retirement in 1981.
She was a communicant of St. Aidan Church, and a member of St. Aidan Seniors. She was a member of the Manton Seniors of Johnston, the former Ladies Auxiliary, Polish White Eagles, Cumberland, the Cumberland Senior Center where she also worked as a volunteer. She also volunteered at the Cumberland Police Department and the former Diamond Hill Nursing Home. She was also an avid Polka dancer.
She leaves one daughter, Lorette DeVito with whom she made her home. Two sons, Joseph J. Martel of Cumberland and Frederick Martel of North Attleboro. One brother, Walter Pietras of Pawtucket and a sister Genevieve Biron of Woonsocket. Six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great great grandson, several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Anna Stegnicki Milos, Helen Ostrowski, Charles Pietras and Stanley Pietras.
Her funeral will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rt. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Aidan Church, Diamond Hill Rd., Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.

Olivia Augusto
1913 - 2008
Olivia Augusto, 94, formerly of Broad St., Cumberland died Sunday in Berkshire Place, Providence. She was the wife of the late Jose Augusto.
Born in Penalva do Castelo, Portugal she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria Rodrigues. She came to this country in 1936 settling in Cumberland.
She and her late husband were co-owners of the former Big A Liquors, Broad St., Central Falls for over twenty years.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, and a member of the Clube Juventude Lusitana, Cumberland.
She leaves a daughter, Carmen Augusto of Lincoln. One sister, Mary Ferreira of Cumberland and a brother, Fernando Augusto of Florida. She was also the mother of the late Dennis Augusto.
Her funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd., Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Dr., Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.

Antonio M. Coelho
1938 - 2008
Antonio M. Coelho, 69, of Broad St. died Tuesday in the Philip Houlitar Center, Providence. He was the husband of Maria (Cardoso) Coelho.
Born in Gouveia, Portugal he was the son of the late Antonio M. and Bertolina (Mendes) Coelho. He came to this country in 1995 settling in Central Falls.
He had been employed by the American Insulated Wire Corp for 13 years retiring in 2005.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Cristina Freitas of Cumberland and Rosa A. Mesquita of Portugal. Three grandchildren, Catarina Mesquita in Portugal, Emma and Ana Freitas of Cumberland. He also leaves a brother and sister in Portugal.

William B. Carlin Jr.
1919 - 2008
William B. Carlin Jr., 89, of Old Pocasset Lane and formerly of Glen Oaks Drive Cumberland died Wednesday in the R. I. Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Mary R. (Laushway) Carlin.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of the late William B. and Annie (Thompson) Carlin Sr. He resided in Johnston for the past three years having previously resided in Cumberland for thirty five years.
He was employed by the Ann & Hope, Cumberland for 26 years retiring in 1985.
He was a WW II, U. S. Army veteran.
Besides his wife he leaves three sons, William B. Carlin III of Cumberland, James T. Carlin of Barrington and Robert A. Carlin of Leominster, MA. Two daughters, Marianne Gottschalk of North Providence and Barbara E. Feeney of Narragansett.
Two brothers, Robert Carlin of Florida and Gordon Carlin of Cumberland. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late June Worsley and George Carlin.

Irene Balbaton, 95, of Wake Robin Road, passed away Monday in the Heritage Hills Nursing Centre, Smithfield. She was the wife of the late John Balbaton.
Mrs. Balbaton was born in Lowell, MA, and daughter of the late Adelard and Anna (Decelle) Ayotte.
She leaves two children, Richard Balbaton of North Attleboro, and Barbara Dennen of Cumberland; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday at 9 AM in the Historic St. Joseph Church, 1303 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Burial will be private.

Elizabeth "Betty" Alexander
1921 - 2008
Elizabeth "Betty" (Scanlon) Alexander, 87, of Smithfield Avenue, passed away Tuesday at home. She was the wife of the late Armand Alexander.
Born in Lincoln, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Neeley) Scanlon. She resided in Lincoln for the past 47 years.
Mrs. Alexander was a graduate of the St. Joseph School of Nursing, and worked as a Registered Nurse with various area hospitals.
She leaves one son, Michael J. Alexander of Lincoln; two daughters, Maureen Alexander of Lincoln, and Kathie Richard of Cumberland; five grandsons, one granddaughter, one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Lucille F. Carroll

Lucille F. (Daigle) Carroll of Emerald Bay Manor, Cumberland died March 2, 2008. Mrs. Carroll was the wife of the late Francis T. Carroll. Born December 3, 1919 in Providence, she was the daughter of Levi and Eva (Cloutier) Daigle and sister to the late Robert Daigle , Pauline (Daigle) McQuade and Harry Daigle.
Mrs. Carroll Lived in Woonsocket for 64 years and was a resident of Cumberland for 24 years. She was a communicant of both St. Charles and St. Joan of Arc Churches.
Mrs. Carroll was a graduate of Rhode Island College and was a Recipient of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1941. For Twenty years, Mrs. Carroll was an elementary school teacher in the Woonsocket School System.
Mrs. Carroll was a charter member of The Northern Rhode Island Association for Retarded Children. She was instrumental in changing the educational system for special needs children. Prior to 1953, special needs children were not accepted into public schools until the age of ten. Her association with this organization continued until her death.
Mrs. Carroll is survived by two children Peter F. Carroll of New York City and Nancy J. Carroll of Cumberland, and Son-in law Tom Foley, husband of the late Susan J (Carroll) Foley of Westerly. Mrs. Carroll is also survived by her Grandson, Thomas Carroll Foley of Westerly.

Evelyn Traynor
1936 - 2008
Traynor, Evelyn died peacefully surrounded by the love of her family at Briarcliffe Manor, Johnston on Sunday, March 2nd. She was the loving and devoted wife of James Traynor of Seekonk, MA. They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 17th.
Born in Pawtucket, RI, she resided most of her life with her husband in Cumberland, RI moving to Seekonk sixteen years ago. She was the daughter of the late Ida (Rock) Crawford-Truchon and George Crawford.
She was a cherished mother to her daughters Lisa A. Gagne and her husband, Francis of Pawtucket, RI and Leslie M. Moody and her husband, Paul 2nd of Barrington, RI. She leaves behind five grandchildren whom she adored, Nicole J. Gagne of Pawtucket and Mathew J. Gagne also of Pawtucket, Paul E. Moody 3rd, James P. Moody and Thomas A. Moody all of Barrington. She also leaves her brother Robert Crawford and two sisters, Julia Fitton and Mary Perry and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was an accomplished professional who began her career at New England Telephone as an operator and rose through the organization becoming a Staff Manager in Boston, MA. until her retirement. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
She enjoyed traveling, boating and shopping. Until her illness, she was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Seekonk, MA.
Donations in her name may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Cecile L. Zacharie, 76, of Pawtucket died peacefully on Monday, March 3rd at the Miriam Hospital after 13 years of chronic illness. She was the loving wife of Rene L. Zacharie for over 53 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker and devoted her life to helping others.
She was born in Central Falls, the daughter of Prosper and Alida (Lapierre) Lariviere. She was a member of the former Notre Dame Parish, now Holy Spirit Parish.
Besides her husband, she is survived by their two daughters, Lorette M. Lanni of Naples, FL and Louise H. Zacharie of Pawtucket. She also leaves her son-in-law, Louis P. Lanni, Jr. and her grandson, Bennett Lanni, whom she loved very much. She leaves a brother Normand Lariviere of Charlestown, RI and four sisters, Yvette Zacharie of Cumberland, Dolores Langlais of Coventry, Noella Laferriere of Pawtucket and Theresa Arnold of Burrilville and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph P. C. Girard
1922 - 2008
Joseph P. C. Girard, 86, of Old Reservoir Rd. died Tuesday in the St. Antoine Residence, North Smithfield. He was the wife of Cecile M. (Pelletier) Girard. They were married for the past 62 years.
Born in Pawtucket he was the son of the late Antonio and Lauranna (Thibedeau) Girard. He resided in Cumberland over 52 years.
He was employed as a Machinist by the Texas Instruments Corp., Attleboro for over twenty years retiring in 1978.
He was a WW II U. S. Coast Guard veteran serving aboard the USS General William Mitchell as a Machinist Mate First Class. He was awarded the American Area and WW II Victory Ribbons, European-African- Middle Eastern Ribbons, Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbons, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon.
As a musician he played trumpet with his father in the late 1940’s and 50’s. In his retirement he enjoyed his front porch, grandchildren and watching the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and 2007.
Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Paul R. Girard of Charleston, SC, and Francis M. Girard of Middleboro, MA and a daughter Denise T. Daigneault of Cumberland. He also leaves a brother Raymond Girard of Pawtucket, as well as five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Sophie Wallace, 89, of Roland St. died Wednesday in the Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late William J. Wallace Sr.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Stanislas and Mary (Kolodziej) Mastalerz. She resided in Cumberland for the past 54 years.
She was employed by the former Health-Tex Corp., Cumberland for many years until her retirement.
She was a founding parishioner of St. Aidan Church, Cumberland. She was an avid bingo player.
She leaves two sons, William J. Wallace Jr. of Cumberland and Robert Wallace of Westford, MA. and a daughter Beverly Carriere, Cumberland. Two sisters, Irene Marsh, Bonita Springs, FL and Jean Tuskowski of Lincoln. She also leaves five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Judith Young also Henry and Walter Mastalerz. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Guy Contrada
1933-2008
Guy Contrada, Sr. 74, of Pawtucket passed away March 9th at The Miriam Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was the beloved son of Sarina Contrada of Westwood, MA and the late John J. Contrada and fiancé of Christine Ritchie of Pawtucket.
Born in Sommerville, MA, Guy was a Korean War veteran and made his living for more than 23 years as a professional jockey. Guy rode at racetracks from Montreal through Winnipeg, Canada to as far south as Florida and Louisiana to points in-between. He won the Winnipeg Derby, the Assinboya Downs Gold Cup and many other races. He rode at Lincoln Downs, Narragansett and Suffolk Downs Race Tracks. After he retired from riding Guy worked for the town of Cumberland for 20 years and also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He has recently been involved with John The Roofer Company of Cumberland.
He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Contrada Bailey of North Kingstown; his son John J. Contrada and fiance Lisa Vaos of Cumberland and his son Guy J. Contrada, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, FL. He also leaves sisters Joanne Reissfelder, her husband and Guy’s friend Robert; and Amelia Giardino of Port St. Lucie, FL and her husband Anthony. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kaela and Casey Contrada and Brandon Bailey as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Maryanne Mulvey.
Guy was a very generous son, father, brother and friend. He had a tremendous sense of humor and touched the hearts of many people. He loved The Boston Red Sox, horses, his cat Sylvester and his Italian food.

Alyce M. Prosser, 49, of Diamond Hill Rd. died Monday in the Philip Hulitar Center, Providence. She was the wife of James A. Prosser.
Born in Providence she was the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Jacqueline (Lynch) Bacon. She resided in Cumberland for the past 13 years previously residing in Central Falls.
She was president of Jac-Lyn Steel, Inc., Cumberland. She was previously employed as a Registered Nurse at the Memorial Hospital of R.I., Pawtucket.
She was the former president of NAWIC of R.I., and a member of the National Association of Women In Construction. She was a co-founder of the RI Tradeswomen Council 1, Regional chairwoman of Tradeswomen Committee, Joint Apprentice Committee, of Ironworkers Local 37 and the RI Steel Erectors Board Member.
Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Meghan J. and Beth A. Prosser both of Cumberland. One brother, James Bacon of North Providence and six half sisters.

Ruth L. McGill
1921-2008
Ruth L. McGill, age 86, passed away on March 11 at the Holiday Retirement Home in Manville. Mrs. McGill was a longtime resident of Cumberland, and then Manville prior to moving to The Holiday.
She was born on March 13, 1921 in Central Falls to the late William and Ella McGuire.
Before her retirement, she was a longtime employee of Hindley Manufacturing Company in Cumberland.
She is survived by her sons; Norman McGill and wife Laurie of North Attleboro, MA, and Dennis McGill and wife Edwina Woodbury of Chapel Hill, NC. She is also survived by her grand-daughter Laurie Poleet and her grandsons Brendon and Jason McGill. Other survivors include 4 great-grand-daughters, one great-grandson, one great-great-grand-daughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. McGill was predeceased by her parents, her husband Norman McGill, her son James, her sisters; Grace Moskwa, Dora Kieon, and Loretta Cimini, and brothers William, Henry, James, and Earl McGuire.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Holiday Retirement Home for their dedication and caring.

Born in the Ashton section of Cumberland she was the daughter of the late Horace and Edith (Barnes) Pickles. She was a life long Cumberland resident.
She was a communicant of St. John Episcopal Church, Cumberland.
She leaves three sons, Robert D. Crowley of Westfield, MA, Stephen H. Crowley of East Providence and John C. Crowley of Deltona, FL. Two daughters, Barbara J. Crowley of Cumberland and Helen I. Lanoie of Smithfield. Two sisters, Marion Prete of Cumberland and Florence Connell of Lincoln. She also leaves nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late David Pickles.
