Waldo R. DiSanto
Waldo R. DiSanto, 76, of Seaport Drive, a retired insurance regulator and consultant, died August 5, 2000, at South County Hospital, South Kingstown. He was the husband of Barbara J. (Cicilline) DiSanto and the late Ida (DelRicco) DiSanto. Born in Hartford, Conn., a son of the late Joseph A. and Josephine (Martellini) DiSanto, he had lived in Warwick and Haddam, Conn., before moving to Narragansett five years ago. Mr. DiSanto was the director of the property and casualty division of the Connecticut Insurance Department from 1982 until 1989 and was the chief of the rating division from 1971 until 1981. He was instrumental in establishing CIRMA, the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Association, and CMIC, the Connecticut Medical Insurance Co. He was the principal insurance examiner and rating analyst for the Rhode Island Division of Insurance from 1962 to 1967 and the principal rating analyst and assistant chief of the rating division from 1967 to 1971. He had been the superintendent of accounting for the Providence Washington Insurance Co. and had also been a commercial banking officer at the former Industrial National Bank, now Fleet. A past director of the Connecticut FAIR Plan, a program to provide property owners with fair and equal access to insurance, Mr. DiSanto received an award for his dedication and contributions to the plan. He was a former member of the National Council on Compensation Insurance. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Atlantic and Pacific and received several campaign ribbons and medals. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from Bryant College in 1948. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John A. DiSanto of Newport Coast, Calif.; five stepsons, Michael D. and David G. Ashworth, both of Warwick, Kevin J. Ashworth in Suwanee, Ga., Peter L. Ashworth of Woonsocket and Terence W. Ashworth of Narragansett; a stepdaughter, Geraldine A. Ashworth of Warwick; a brother, Anthony DiSanto of Wakefield; and a sister, Gloria Lilla of Narragansett. He was the brother of the late Marco and Martha DiSanto, Olga Carlone and Rita Marinosci. The funeral was held from The Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Ave., Route 5, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St. Burial was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
Myrtle M. Goodwin
Myrtle M. Goodwin, 95, of Commonwealth Avenue, a former restaurant and dress shop operator, died August 5, 2000, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Webster Goodwin the late Louis Rathbone, and the late Wilson W. Crouch. Born in Attleboro, a daughter of the late William and Mary (Smith) Thornton, she had lived in Bristol and Seekonk before moving to Warwick in 1979. She had operated the former Myrtle House Restaurant and the Old Grist Mill, both in Seekonk, with her husband, Louis, for 40 years. She had also simultaneously operated the Carousel Dress Shop at the Old Grist Mill. A prominent equestrian in the 1920s and 1930s, Mrs. Goodwin rode show horses for H.B. Wicks, a steel industrialist from Cleveland, as well as for the Vanderbilt family. She was an avid antique doll collector and dealer and was a member of the Ida Lewis Doll Club of Newport. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Charles W. Crouch of Portsmouth; two stepsons, Webster Goodwin Jr. of Barrington and John D. Goodwin of Cranston; a niece, Barbara Kissack of Chepatchet; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Doris MacIntosh. The funeral was private. Vena B. “Vera” Geary
Vena B. “Vera” Geary, 90, of Biltmore Avenue, Providence, a retired packing clerk, died August 6, 2000, at home. She was the wife of the late Harold V. Geary. Born in Cranston, a daughter of the late Walter and Minnie (Gardner) Scott, she lived in Providence most of her life. She was a packing clerk at Armbrust Chain Co. for 14 years, retiring in 1980. Mrs. Geary was a past president of the Thomas Connell VFW Post 45 Ladies Auxiliary. She leaves two daughters, Helen M. Geary, with whom she lived, and Barbara A. Saunders of Cranston; three sons, Harold V. Geary Jr. of Warwick, and Robert F. and Daniel J. Geary, both of Providence; and six grandchildren, Donna Horn in Florida, Rhonda Berard in Georgia, Michael Geary of Warwick, Cheryl Reed of Woonsocket, Kevin O’Brien of Cranston and Brian Geary of Providence; and seven great-grandchildren, Megan O’Brien, Dilan Stewart and Victoria Stewart, all of Woonsocket, Ricky Berard and Kyle Berard in Georgia, Christopher Horn and Jeffrey Horn in Florida. The funeral service was held in Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith St. Burial was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Ida Russo
Ida Russo, 85, of Scenic Drive, formerly of Seamans Street, Providence, a former assembler, died August 6, 2000, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Domenic J. Russo. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Laurenzo and Teresa (Merolla) Orsini, she moved to Warwick in 1999. Mrs. Russo had been an assembler at Bulova Watch Co., Providence, for many years, before she was married in 1948. She leaves two daughters, Antoinette M. Ronzio of North Providence and Marguerite T. Costantino of Warwick; two brothers, Lawrence Orsini and Manfred Orsini, both of Providence; six sisters, Victoria DiMeo of Johnston, Irene Mehaffy of Providence, Dolores Annis of Oshkosh, Wis., Emily Maxwell in Massachusetts, Gilda Martinelli of West Warwick, and Theresa Orsini of Cranston; and three grandchildren, Lisa, Donna and Michael Constantino. She was the sister of the late Oswald and Louis Orsini, Evelyn SanGiovanni and Gilda Orsini. The funeral was held from The Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Ave., Route 5, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Jefferson Boulevard. Burial was in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
Edward E. Gage
Edward E. Gage, 57, of Langley Street, a carpenter, died August 7, 2000, at home. He was the husband of Theresa O’Donnell Gage. Born in Warwick, a son of the late Edward and Helen (Mottram) Gate, he lived in Warwick all his life. Mr. Gage was a carpenter for Local 94. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John E. Gage of Wakefield; a daughter, Christine Burns of Providence; two stepdaughters, Donna and Jacqueline Jacobs, and a brother, Robert Gage, all of Warwick; and four grandchildren. Elizabeth J. Higgins
Elizabeth J. Higgins, 75, of Carlton Avenue, a retired saleswoman, teller and receptionist, died August 7, 2000, at home. She was the wife of the late James R. Higgins. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Hugh J. and Mary A. (Warren) Markey, she had been a Warwick resident since 1952. She was a receptionist and teller for the former Industrial National Bank and a saleswoman for Cherry and Webb Department Store in Warwick until its closing in April. She was a member of the Pontiac Peers and a communicant of St. Kevin Church where she was active in several parish activities. She leaves two sons, Dennis W. Higgins of Smithfield and James F. Higgins of Warwick; a daughter, Mary Beth Charette of Warwick; a brother, Hugh J. Markey III of Warwick; and four grandchildren, Christopher E. and Chelsie L. Higgins, Jessi L. and Sydni E. Charette. She was sister of the late Robert H. and Thomas W. Markey and the late Marion A Schneider. The funeral was held from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Kevin Church, Sandy Lane. Joseph P. Schenck
Joseph P. Schenck, 59, of Groveland Avenue, a retired machine operator and former chief of the Tiogue Fire Department died August 7, 2000, at home. He was the husband of Angelina (Susi) Schenck. Born in Coventry, he was a son of the late Edward and Alice (Therrien) Schenck. Mr. Schenck was a machine operator at Victor Electric, Coventry, for 32 years, retiring last year due to illness. He was a carpenter at Electric Boat, Groton, Conn., for eight years. He was a volunteer firefighter and was a former chief of the Tiogue Fire Department. He was an Army veteran. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Jessica Hardiman of Johnston; six sisters, Theresa Morin, Yvette Oakes and Ann Fowler, all of Coventry, Irene Gasbarro of Johnston, Cecile Richer of North Kingstown and Yvonne Lawton of Warwick; two brothers, Emile and Louis Schenck, both of Coventry; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Marie Barraclough and Henry, Lucien and Ovila Schenck. A committal service with military honors was held in the chapel at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
L. Dorothy Burke
L. Dorothy Burke, 84, of Greenwich Avenue, a retired co-owner of a catering company, died August 7, 2000, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Daniel Burke. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Arthur J. Ford Sr. and Loretta D. (Pegram) Ford, she had lived in East Greenwich before moving to Warwick 25 years ago. Mrs. Burke was the co-owner of the former Ford & Burke Catering Co. for many years, retiring in the early 1970s. She leaves several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Arthur J. Ford Jr. and Robert J. Ford, Winifred I. Plante, and Helen M. Maher. The funeral was held from Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Fourth Avenue, East Greenwich. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery, East Greenwich.
