Luiz S. Pereira, 91, of Perry Street, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Manor. He was the husband of the late Anna (Garcia) Pereira.
Born in Faial, the Açores, Mr. Pereira was a son of the late Francisco S. and Amelia R. (daCosta) Pereira. He lived in Faial for 46 years, before moving to Bristol.
He was a boatbuilder at Pearson Yacht Company for 15 years before retiring in 1973. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Mr. Pereira leaves a son, Jose Pereira of Fall River; two daughters, Maria M. Silva and Idalina Pereira, both of Bristol; and a sister Maria Emelia Pereira of Faial. He was the brother of the late Costodio S., Jose S., Antonio S., Francisco S., Manuel S. and Costodio S. Pereira.
His funeral was held Tuesday, Sept. 23, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Church. The Rev. Joseph D. Santos Jr. was the celebrant of the Mass. Maria Silva was the reader for the Mass and Maria M. Silva and Maria Idalina Pereira presented the offertory gifts.
Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, where Father Santos offered the committal prayers. Pallbearers were Joey Correia, Jose C. and Constantino Silva, Jose E. Pereira, Joao Pimental and Jose Garcia.
Olympia M. Botelho
Bookkeeper for International Ladies' Garment Workers Union
Olympia M. (Brown) Botelho, 84, formerly of Eddy Lane, Somerset, a retired bookkeeper, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at the Crawford Skilled Nursing Home.
She was the wife of the late Edward Botelho. Born in Portsmouth on September 10, 1919, a daughter of the late Augustus T. and Rita (DaCosta) Brown, she lived in Somerset for 42 years.
Mrs. Botelho had been a bookkeeper for the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union for 25 years before retiring in 1980.
She was a former parishioner of St. Patrick's Church, in Somerset.
Mrs. Botelho was a member of the Somerset Lions Club.
She leaves a daughter, Maria Aguiar of Swansea; two sisters, Cecile "Ginger" Brown and Mary Spooner, both of Portsmouth; two brothers, Anthony Brown of Portsmouth and Jesse Brown of Fairhaven, Mass.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Louis Brown.
Her funeral was held from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals in Somerset with a Mass of Christian Burial and burial at St. Patrick's Church, Somerset.
Robert Bousquet
Real estate investor, president of BMB Corp.
Robert Bousquet, 73, of Putnam Pike, Greenville, Rhode Island, formerly of Broadway, Newport, and Leonard Drive, Tiverton, died on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence.
Born in Fall River, Mr. Bousquet was the son of the late Leo F. Bousquet and Aurore (Bernard) Bousquet. He was a real estate investor and president of BMB Corporation in Fall River.
Mr. Bousquet was a 1948 graduate of Prevost High School and was a member and past president of The Knights of Columbus, Tiverton. He was a United States Air Force Veteran.
Mr. Bousquet leaves four daughters, Diane Bousquet and Denise Drexel both of Chepachet, Michelle Bourlett of Tiverton and Donna Beaudoin of Somerset, Mass.; two sons, Robert Bousquet of Somerset and David Beaudoin of Somerset; and 13 grandchildren.
Private funeral arrangements were by the Boule Funeral Home, Fall River.
Sandra L. DeSa
Durfee graduate, member of Corvette Club
Sandra L. (Brown) DeSa, 57, of 32 Shore Road, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at home after a brief illness. She was the wife of Augusto DeSa for the last 36 years.
Born in Fall River, a daughter of Esther (Brow) Brown of Largo, Fla., and the late Russell Brown. She had lived in Fall River for 39 years before moving to Tiverton in 1985.
She was a 1964 graduate of BMC Durfee High School.
Mrs. DeSa had been an accounts-payable clerk for the former United Merchants, and later, for Quaker Fabrics, before she became ill.
She was a former member of the board of directors of the Bristol County Corvette Club.
Besides her husband and her mother, she leaves a son, Christopher A. DeSa of Fall River; two sisters, Patricia Bishop of Brooksville, Fla., and Eileen Brown in New York; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 8 a.m. from the Silva-Faria Funeral Home, Fall River, with a funeral Mass at 9 in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Fall River. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River.
Betty House
Congressional aide, owned
several businesses
Betty (Tripp) House, 85, of Long Highway, Little Compton, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at St. Anne's Hospital, Fall River. She was the wife of the late Vernon E. House, and of the late John Wolford Sr.
Born in South Dartmouth, Mass., a daughter of the late Eldon and Sally (Eller) Tripp, she settled in Little Compton after she retired.
During her varied career, Mrs. House had worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, had served as an assistant to Representatives James B. Utt and Gordon Canfield in their Washington, D.C. offices, had been the co-owner of a Harley Davidson sales and service franchise in the Georgetown section of Washington during the 1950s and 1960s, and had owned and operated a wool import business, Appleton Bros. of London.
In her retirement, she had been assisting one of her daughters in a family-run agricultural business.
Mrs. House was a past member of the Little Compton Zoning Board of Review and the Little Compton Planning Board. She also served on the Democratic Town Committee.
She was a past member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Washington.
She was a former member of the Kenwood Country Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club in Washington.
Mrs. House loved to read, garden and engage in lively discussions.
She leaves two sons, John Wolford Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Richard E. Wolford of McLean, Va.; two daughters, Dawn Sisson and Jane Gavin, both of Little Compton; two sisters, Winifred McGrath of North Providence and Sally Kennedy of Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was a sister of the late Ruth Steinle and Bradford Tripp.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. in the Little Compton's United Congregational Church.
Rev. Gerald Wyndham Humphrey
War vet, civil-rights activist, retired Episcopal priest
The Rev. Gerald Wyndham, 74, of Parsons Lane, a retired Episcopal priest, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, of metastatic cancer at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center of Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island, in Providence.
He was the husband of Josephine Roig (Young) Humphrey. Born in Boston on July 14, 1929, the son of the late Harold Wyndham and Lucie Constance (Flaherty) Humphrey, he had moved to Little Compton in 1977.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, he later prepared for the priesthood by studying at the former Episcopal Theological School, in Cambridge, Mass., and The Church Divinity School of the Pacific, from which he graduated in 1955.
Over the course of his ministry, Father Humphrey served parishes in Beacon and Oyster Bay, N.Y., and Stoughton and Marlborough, Mass.
He also had been active in the civil-rights movement, in the 1960s, participating in demonstrations in Alabama and elsewhere in the South to protest racial segregation. And from 1978 to 1985, he studied at the Jung Institute, in Zurich, and served as an assistant to the Anglican archdeacon of Switzerland, celebrating the Eucharist with Church of England congregations in Andermatt, Gstaad, Interlochen and Murren.
In his retirement, Father Humphrey established a weekly Episcopalian service at the Blenheim Newport retirement home, in Middletown, which was continued by other clergy after he came ill.
An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served as a noncommissioned officer.
Father Humphrey was a member of the Boston Athenaeum, the Harvard Club of Boston, the Sakonnet Golf Club and the Warren's Point Beach Club.
Besides his wife, he leaves three stepsons, William F. Young of McLean, Va., Thomas B.H. Young of Naples, Fla., and Edward C. Young of Granada Hills, Calif.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 182 Willow Ave.

Christopher J. Lake
Computer technician,
former Tiverton resident
Christopher James Lake, 43, of St. Cloud, Fla., previously of San Diego County, Calif., died suddenly in a head-on collision early on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003. A computer technician employed at Lockheed-Martin, he was on his way home from work.
Born in Fall River, a son of Robert P. Lake of Borrego Springs and Chula Vista, Calif., and the late Katherine (Wimer) Lake, he lived in Tiverton Four Corners before moving with his family to California in 1969.
Mr. Lake attended Nonquit Elementary School in Tiverton and was a graduate of Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, and Coleman College in San Diego.
In addition to his computer skills, he enjoyed hang-gliding, hiking, kayaking and other outdoor activities.
In addition to his father, he leaves a brother, Michael R. Lake of Spring Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Janet Rinaldi of El Cajon, Calif., and Barbara Topete of Spring Valley, Calif.; three nephews, two nieces and a grandniece.
Services were held on Chula Vista on Thursday, Sept. 18. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Tiverton.
George Oliveira
Cabinetmaker, Navy Seabee
George Oliveira, 80, of Sakonnet Bay Manor, Main Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003. He was the husband of the late Elsie (Azeredo) Oliveira. They had been married for 49 years.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Antonio and Maria (Rapoza) Oliveira.
Mr. Oliveira served as a Navy Seabee in the Pacific during World War II. Among other duties, he built airports in the Philippines while under fire. There he suffered an injury that left him permanently debilitated.
He had worked for 46 years as a shop steward and union representative at A.H. Leeming & Sons, in Fall River, where he was a cabinetmaker. He was a member of the Carpenters Local 51.
He served on the Volunteer Fire Police Department of North Tiverton.
Mr. Oliveira was a member of the VFW Woodrow Silvia Post 5392 and the Disabled American Veterans Kerins Hogan 7 Post. He was a third-degree Knight in the Father Boehr Knights of Columbus, and a founding member of St. Elizabeth's Credit Union.
Since 1950, Mr. Oliveira had been a communicant of St. Christopher Church and served as an usher, a trainer to the altar servers and as a host to the statue of Our Lady of Providence — an honor among church members.
He was a charter member of the Boy Scout Troop 25 at St. Elizabeth Church and a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow and a scoutmaster for Troop 1, Tiverton. He received the St. George Award, the highest Catholic award given to an adult by the Boy Scouts. He was also a Little League coach for the Tigers in Tiverton.
He leaves a son, Albert A. Oliveira of Stratham, N.H.; a daughter, Linda Marie LePage of Tiverton; a brother, Antone Oliveira of Ossipee, N.H.; three sisters, Sarah Torres in Kansas, Mildred Martin of Fall River, and Lorraine Healey of Westport; and five grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Tobias Oliveira.
His funeral was held at the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Christopher Church.
Pearl Delamaur Silvia
Communicant of Holy Ghost Church, mother of two
Pearl Delamaur (Duclaw) Silvia, 70, of Judson Street, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Tuesday, September 16, 2003.
She was the wife of Henry Francis Silvia. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Cora (Noble) Duclaw.
Mrs. Silvia was a communicant of Holy Ghost Church in Tiverton.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, David J. Silvia, and a daughter, Cheryl A. Silvia, both of Tiverton. She was the sister of the late Webster Duclaw.
Her funeral with Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home will be private.
Liberty Mae Ripa

Liberty Mae "Libby" Ripa, 84, of 51C Glen Meade Drive, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the Oradell (N.J.) Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Victor S. Ripa.
Born in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Kelly and Jennie Mavricken.
Mrs. Ripa had been a hairdresser at Louis of Bellevue Avenue in Newport before retiring in the early 1980s.
She was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, Newport.
She leaves two nieces, Diane D'Avanzo of New Milford, N.J., and Kathryn Mauro of New York city.
Her funeral was held on Saturday, Sept. 20, in St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Church, Newport. Burial was in Trinity Cemetery, Portsmouth.
Rogers D. Turner
Navy veteran, communications specialist
Rogers D. Turner, 64, of Tiverton died on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Helen (Orem) Turner to whom he had been married for 38 years.
Born in Bath Springs, Tenn., he was the son of the late John Alver Turner and the late Nancy Mae (Yarbro) Turner. He had resided here since 1965.
He was a retired chief petty officer, whose 22 years of Navy service included the Cuban Blockade. He had attended Radio School in Bainbridge, Maryland and was a radio operator and communications systems manager. He was also the recipient of the Good Conduct Award. Since his retirement for the Navy, he ahd been employed by Purvis Systems, Middletown, as a communications specialist.
A family man, he was also an avid golfer and sports fan.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Cheryl Nystrom of Warwick; a son, Rogers "Pete" Turner Jr. of Tiverton; three sisters, Nora Belle Cordle of Bath Springs, Tenn., Mabel Frasher of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Jean Blurton of Jackson, Tenn.; a brother, Milburn Turner of Norfolk, Va.; and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Nancy Alice Turner, Paul Turner and Wilburn Turner.
His was held Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, Tiverton, followed by burial in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.
