Longest living member of RI Country Club
Thomas Johnson of Stone Tower Lane died on Sunday, Sept 26, 1999, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was 98.
Mr. Johnson was married to the late Jean (Bart) Johnson. Born in Medford, Mass, he was a son of the late Arthur L. and Ann (Farley) Johnson. He lived in Barrington for 27 years after living previously in Providence.
Mr. Johnson was the former president and chairman of Welsh Mfg., now North Safety Products, a division of Textron. He was a former Rhode Island jury commissioner.
Mr. Johnson was the longest living member of the Rhode Island Country Club, where he served on the board of governors. He was a member of the University Club in Providence and was a past president of the Industrial Safety Equipment Association.
Mr. Johnson was an active member of the Providence YMCA and a frequent golfer. He earned an electrical engineering degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology after attending Phillips Andover Academy.
He was chairman of Welsh Mfg. from 1973 to 1976 and president from 1950 to 1973. He began working at Welsh in 1931 after serving as an electroplating specialist for the Gillette Co in Boston for six years.
He leaves three daughters, Ann J. McNamara of Far Hills, NJ, and Nancy J. Chaffee and Susan Johnson of Warren, and 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Richard Johnson.
His funeral will be private. Burial will be in Forest Chapel Cemetery.
Carol B. Read
Leaves son in Barrington
Carol B. Read, 79, of Lincoln Avenue died Wednesday, Nov 17, 1999, at home. She was the wife of the late Clinton J. Read.
Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Edward A. and Corinne V. (Cote) Boorom.
Mrs. Read had lived in Barrington since 1985, previously living in Cranston for many years.
She was a former treasurer of St. John's Episcopal Church in Marcellus, NY, and a Sunday school superintendent and vestry member at St. David's on the Hill Episcopal Church in Cranston. She was a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 6 in Marcellus.
Mrs. Read attended Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing and was a graduate of Hope High School in Providence.
She leaves two sons, Arthur M. Read II of Barrington and Clinton J. Read of Cranston; three sisters, Louise LaColle of Coventry, Patricia Haddock of Cranston and Jean Greene of Ft. Ripley, Minn, and seven grandchildren.
Her funeral was held Monday in St. David's on the Hill Episcopal Church in Cranston. Burial was in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
Charles F. Rayner
Marine Corps captain, attended Barrington schools
Charles F. Rayner of North Face Drive, Newbury, NH, died Wednesday, Nov 17, 1999, at the New London (NH) Hospital. He was 71.
For 44 years, he was the husband of Judith (Cotter) Rayner. He was born in Winthrop, Mass., a son of Francis P. and Carolyn (Douglas) Rayner.
Mr. Rayner was a former Barrington resident, attended Barrington schools and the Maine Maritime Academy and graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1952.
He lived in Guilford, Conn., for 30 years before moving to Newbury in 1997.
Mr. Rayner worked for Miles Pharmaceuticals (Bayer) before retiring and was a former member of the Guilford Planning and Zoning Committee.
He served in the US Marine Corps in Korea, retiring as a captain.
Besides his wife and brother, he is survived by a daughter, Martha Rayner of New York City; two sons, William Rayner of Durham, Conn., and Benjamin Rayner of Chicago; a brother, Douglas E. Rayner of this town; three granddaughters, Hope, Millie and Ruby, and nieces and nephews.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at a future date. Burial will be private.

Lorene R. Blair
Member of Barrington Presbyterian Church
Lorene R. Blair of Wildflower Road died Monday, Oct 4, 1999, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was 83 and the wife of the late Edwin A Blair.
Born in Indianapolis, a daughter of the late Walter and Clara (Schulte) Ristow, she lived in Barrington for 36 years.
Mrs. Blair was a member of Barrington Presbyterian Church.
She leaves two daughters, Phyllis B. Darrah of Richmond, Va., and Suzanne B. Noerager of Houston; two brothers, Carl Ristow of Kiklin, Ind, and Homer Ristow of Nobelsville, Ind., and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Barrington Presbyterian Church.
