Walter J. Bradley, 90, of 412 Landing Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Memorial Baptist Church. The Revs. Jim Kirk and Robbie Vance will officiate. Burial will be in historic Bethany Cemetery. A native of Meter, Ga., Mr. Bradley was a son of W. Charlie Bradley and Annie Proctor Bradley. His mother died when he was 8 years old, leaving him a younger brother and sister who were placed in a Florida United Methodist Children's Home in Enterprise, Fla. He attended DeLand, Fla. schools and graduated from DeLand High School in June 1929.
After graduation and refusing further education opportunities, Mr. Bradley left the Methodist Home and set out for the Lyons, Ga. area where two older brothers had relocated. On his way he was given a ride and received $5 and words of encouragement from Mr. J.C. Penney. After a short stay in Lyons, Mr. Bradley relocated to Aiken with the promise of a job with an older brother, Waitus, who was employed by Weatherford Plumbing and Heating Co. He immediately became employed by Mr. Weatherford and advanced from a plumber's helper to job superintendent until 1941. While employed by Weatherford, Mr. Bradley installed and supervised installation of plumbing and heating systems in most of Aiken's Winter Colony homes during their construction. He was very involved with projects at Parris Island, supervising large numbers of men who were consistently older and more experienced than him. Needing a change in late 1941, Mr. Bradley moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., where he found employment with Almiral & Lucas, a mechanical contracting company. From Chattanooga, he moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 1942 he worked on the Clinton Engineering Works Project for Stone and Webster & Poe Piping & Heating Co. as a general plumbing foreman with over 1,500 men under his supervision until late 1945. Mr. Bradley was on the Oak Ridge job site when the U.S. dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. Gen. Groves made the announcement of the attack to all on the project.
Mr. Bradley returned to Chattanooga in 1945, working for Lucas & Sons, Mechanical Contractors, until his return to Aiken. While in Chattanooga, he was a member and served as president of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union #43.
Returning to Aiken on Jan. 1, 1951, he worked with his younger brother, Wallace, to finish a troubled project until completion. After completion, Walter Bradley founded Bradley Plumbing and Heating Mechanical Contractors on Jan. 2, 1952. The company has operated successfully in three states for over 50 years doing residential and commercial plumbing, heating and air conditioning. Some of his most successful projects as a mechanical contractor were Queens Grant, Palmetto Dunes, Hilton Head; Campbell Soup Co., Maxton, N.C.; Hickory Knob State Park, McCormick; Savannah Lakes Resort, McCormick; the City of Aiken Municipal Building, as well as numerous Aiken County schools.
Before his retirement due to health problems, Mr. Bradley held a master plumber license in North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina. He also served for over 30 years on the City of Aiken Zoning Board of Appeals, as well as other numerous other committees and boards. Mr. Bradley was admired and respected by his family, friends, employees, customers and business colleagues for his knowledge, integrity, generosity, kindness and fairness to all. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Jewelle Wright Redd Bradley; his stepson (whom he loved as a son), Timothy
W. Redd and daughter-in-law, Carol Hill Redd; a grandson, Timothy W. Redd II; a granddaughter, Hillary C. Redd, all of Aiken; a daughter, Joyce B.
