Services for Thomas P. 'Bud' Sellers, 69, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. John Hamilton officiating with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Sellers, widower of Elizabeth Rolfe Sellers, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000. Born in Evergreen, N.C., he was a son of the late Hasley R. and Hazel Wyatt Sellers. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was retired from Carolina Power & Light with 36 years of service. He had a great influence with young kids in sports and coached Pony League baseball for many years. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Lin and April Sellers of Hartsville; daughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Sellers of Bradenton, Fla.; three sisters, Alice S. Brock of Hartsville, Dorothy S. Duncan of Marion and Jane S. Sinodis of Fayetteville, N.C.

Graveside services for Mildred Bobbitt Kuehner, 83, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Mrs. Kuehner, widow of Dr. Kenneth G. Kuehner, died Thursday, Oct. 19. Born in Durham, N.C., she was a daughter of the late William M. and Ruby Cheek Bobbitt. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, a graduate of Duke University, co-founder of the Hartsville Kindergarten, and a retired school teacher. Surviving are her two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Kuehner and William Hopkins of Blythewood, Tanya and Jon Sisk of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Clara Bobbitt of Durham, N.C.; four grandchildren, Wyeth Ruthven, Caitlin Ruthven, Hart Ruthven and Andrew Ruthven; and a nephew, Steven Bobbitt.

DARLINGTON - Memorial services for Johnny Bernard 'Bunny' Slater were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, in Mitchell-Josey Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Franklin Dixon officiating. Burial followed in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. Mr. Slater, 36, died in Philadelphia after an extended illness. He was born
in Darlington, a son of John Slater and the late Nellie Mae Lide Slater. He attended Darlington and Florence County public schools and graduated from South Florence High School, class of Ô82. He was converted and baptized in St. Matthew Holiness New Covenant Christ Church, later moving to Philadelphia and joining Better Way Ministries Church. He was employed at the Naval Shipyard of Pennsylvania until his health declined and was assistant defensive coordinator of Warminster Pioneers Football Team. Survivors include his daughter, Christa Maye of Philadelphia, Pa; his father, John Slater of Darlington; two brothers, Charles (Beatrice) Slater of Columbus, Ga., and James Robert Coe of Darlington; three sisters, Loretta (Levern) Peoples of Florence, Elder Jacqueline (Rev. Franklin) Dixon of Jacksonville, N.C., and Annie Mae (Arthur) Harrison of Darlington; two aunts, Gladys (George) Rouse of Darlington and Annie Eliza March of Columbia; three uncles, Robbie Lee Slater, Murray Slater Jr. and R. DARLINGTON - Services for Charlie 'Chief' Capers were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, in Union Baptist Church with the Rev. P. W. Williams, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Hart No. 2 Cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. Mr. Capers died Monday, Oct. 16, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born
in Florence County, a son of the late Clarence and Ethel Delane Capers. He received his formal education in Darlington County public schools. He was a farmer for a number of years. Later, he was employed at the Darlington Veneer Mill from which he retired after 45 years of dedicated service. At an early age, he joined Palmetto Baptist Church. Years later, he joined Union Baptist Church where he served as a trustee and in any other capacity when needed. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha Capers of Darlington; three daughters, Ms. Shirley Capers and Mrs. Mary Lee Covington, both of Darlington, and Mrs. Charlie Mae (William) Gandy of Florence; a son, Thomas (Cynthia) Capers of Munford, Ala.; seven step-children, Mrs. Rosa Lee (Harold) Dubose, Ms. Deloris James, Ms. Barbara Brown, Robert, Sam and Nathaniel Kennedy and Dean Singleton; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Ross and Mrs. Virginia (Roosevelt) Goodson, both of Darlington; two brothers, Doc (Louise) Capers of Darlington and Alphonzo (Mary) Capers of Florence; nine grandchildren; three grandchildren he reared as his own, Camesha, Shawn and Nikay Capers of Darlington; 15 great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren; sisters- and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.

She was a life member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Peace Free Will Baptist Church, 897 Third Loop Road, Florence, SC 29505. Mr. Suggs died Sunday, Oct. 22, in a local hospital after an illness. He was born
in Darlington County and was the son of the late Willie Lee and Ella Mae Oliver Suggs. He was a member of Peace Free Will Baptist Church and loved his church and church family very much. Mr. Suggs was a truck driver and retired from Smith's Trucking after many years. He was a past member of the Darlington Moose Lodge, as well as an avid race fan. He also enjoyed working in his garden and yard. Mr. Suggs was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Billy Suggs and Jackie Suggs; and one sister, Mary Gainey. Survivors include his wife, Frances Goodwin Suggs of the home; one daughter, Cindy (Tony) Porter of Florence; one step-daughter, Norma M. Broach of Oklahoma; one step-son, Terry (Mary) Morse of Darlington; two brothers, Randall (Linda) Suggs and Johnny 'Monk' Suggs, both of Darlington; twin sister, Judy Boatwright of Hartsville; four sisters, Martha McLaughlin of Hartsville, Margie (Francis) Duvall, Janice Miller and Helen Clark, all of Darlington; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

BEACH ISLAND, S.C. - Memorial services for Dorothy Bell Murphree, 67, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, on private property in Beach Island, S.C., beside her late husband, Bruce Samuel Murphree. Omar Funeral Home of Chesapeake, Va. was in charge of the cremation. Mrs. Murphree died on Thursday, Oct. 5, at her home in Chesapeake, Va. of respiratory failure. She was the daughter of the late Gill Bell of Tuscaloosa, Ala. and the late Minnie Mae Traver of Lancaster, Calif. Survivors are four children, Terry Scott Murphree and Donald Keith Murphree, both of Chesapeake, Va., Jacqueline Sue Murphree of San Diego, Calif., and Pamela M. Born in Hartsville, he was a son of Creola Smith Gainey Pack and the late Ernest Gainey. He was employed with Fluor-Daniel at Wellman Industries in Florence. Surviving are his wife, Mary Griffis Stanko of Hartsville; one son and daughter-in-law, John (Tammi) Stanko of Kennesaw, Ga.; and a grandson, Garrett Stanko, of Kennesaw, Ga.
