ELIZABETH PEOPLES
Services for Elizabeth "Bess" Peoples were held at 3 pm. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, in Lamar Church of God with Bro. Levern Kirkland, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Peoples died Sunday, Aug. 27. She was born in Carterville, a daughter of the late Ernest and Etta Kirkland Jackson. She was a 1950 graduate of Spaulding High School of Lamar. She was a member of the Church of God and served as a Sunday School teacher and on its usher board. She was married to Willie Peoples, Jr. Survivors are her husband of Lamar; four daughters, Willietta (Cornelius) Aaron of Charlotte, N.C., Elaine (James) Carolina of Florence, Annette (Peter) Fagan of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sylvia (Kenneth) Harris of Augusta, Ga.; two sons, Stanley Peoples of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Timothy Peoples of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Rosebud Robinson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Christine (Ralph) Gooden of Florence; a brother, Lonnie Jackson of New York, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; mother-in-law, Mary Peoples of Lamar; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Mae Peoples of Washington, D.C., and Mary Washington of Timmonsville.

QUEEN ESTER PATE
Graveside services for Queen Ester "Twist" Pate, formerly of Chesterfield, were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Ms. Pate died Tuesday, Aug. 29, in Columbia after an extended illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter and step-daughter of the late Mildred Pate Mack and Matthew Mack. Queen Ester was affectionately known as "Twist" and grew up in Patrick with her grandparents, Frank and Angeline Pate. She attended Chesterfield public schools. She was a member of Frances Chapel Holiness Church in Patrick, where she held the distinction of lead vocalist and directress for many years. Survivors are her father, Marray Huff; three sisters, Myrtle Wideman (George) of District Heights, Md., Almertia M. (Paul) Williams of Durham, N.C., and Velda Mack of Hartsville.

JAMES PERKINS
James Perkins, 84, died Friday in a Columbia nursing home after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 1020 Farm House Lane, Darlington.

JAMES W. PERKINS
Services for James W. Perkins, 82, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 8, 2000, in New Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial will be in Florence National Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Perkins died Friday, Sept. 1. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Nathan and Carrie Bostic Perkins. He was a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church and an Army veteran. Surviving are his son, James Hudson of Lilburn, Ga.; a sister, Olivia Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister-in-law, Lillie Perkins of Society Hill and grandchildren.

FLOYD BELL
Services for Floyd E. Bell Sr., 80, were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at West Hartsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Tomlinson, officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to West Hartsville Baptist Church Building Fund. Mr. Bell died Friday, Sept. 1. Born in Richland County, he was a son of the late J. S. and Zelma Wiley Bell. He was a charter member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, Men’s Bible class and Tuesday Church Retiree Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from Sonoco Products Company in 1985. Surviving are his wife, Mary Coskrey Bell of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Zelma Ann (Buddy) Shumake of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Floyd E. (Beverly) Bell Jr. of Columbia; five grandchildren, Brook Shumake of Sumter, Paige Griggs of Hartsville, Dr. Floyd E. Bell III of Spartanburg, Shannon Bell of Columbia, Misty Bell of Charleston; granddaughter-in-law, Jan Paige Gorley-Shumake of Hartsville; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Edward Todd Shumake.

CORRIE MOORE
Services for Corrie Gainey Moore, 87, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline, officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Building Fund. Mrs. Moore, widow of Robert H. Moore, died Thursday, Aug. 31. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Lila Watkins Gainey. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Deborah Sunday School Class, Golden Fellowship and Sophia Nichols Circle. She was retired from Hartsville 5 & 10, and was later employed with Belk Department Store. Surviving are a son, Robert E. Moore of Hartsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Rev. Johnnie L. Jones of Hartsville; sister, Joanne Northcutt of Hartsville; grandchildren, Laura Jones, Robin J. (Jeffery) McKenzie and Jonathan Jones, all of Hartsville; great-grandson, Jamie Cason McKenzie.

JULIA BENJAMIN
Mrs. Julia Mae Benjamin died on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Hines Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 3309 E. Old Camden Road, Hartsville.

JULIA BENJAMIN
Services for Julia Benjamin were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in New Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. Calvin Daniels, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home. Mrs. Benjamin was born in the Society Hill community, a daughter of the late Abe and Ollie Bulls Isaac. She was educated in Darlington County public schools and was married early in life to the late Carl Lee Benjamin Sr. Julia was a housekeeper for more than 30 years in the home of the late Clyde and Sallie Smith. She was a member of the New Hopewell Baptist Church and loved to sing old time gospel songs. Survivors are two daughters, Emma Ann Benjamin and Sallie L. (David) Graham, both of Society Hill; five sons, Charles (Allie) Benjamin, Carl Lee (Irene) Benjamin and Felix (Donna) Benjamin, all of Baltimore, Md., Clyde Benjamin and Calvin Benjamin, both of Hartsville; 23 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charlie (Leda) Isaac of Baltimore, Md., and Nick Jackson of Society Hill.

A. Q. CARRAWAY
Services for A. Q. Carraway, 84, of Darlington, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Indian Branch United Methodist Church with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Mr. Carraway died Saturday, Sept. 9, in a local hospital. He was born in Florence County and was the son of the late Nathan and Fannie Dyson Carraway. He was a member of Indian Branch United Methodist Church and the Men’s Sunday School Class. Mr. Carraway was a retired farmer and enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Oliver Carraway of the home; two sons, Thomas E. (Diane) Carraway of Columbia, Arnold E. (Rae) Carraway of Darlington; four daughters, Bonnie (Alvin) Odom of Darlington; Lillie Calder of Jackson-ville, Fla., Gayle (Mike) Atkinson of Lexington, and Sherrill (Chris) Nielson of Florence; 13 grandchildren and three-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Indian Branch United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 224, Darlington, S.C. 29540 or to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Suite 101, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.

KATHERINE FARLESS
Services for Katherine Ennis Farless, 74, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at the Chapel of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Church service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at Riverside Baptist Church in Colerain, N.C., with the Rev. Tim Tomlinson officiating with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to either Kalmia Gardens, Coker Performing Arts Center or West Hartsville Baptist Church. Mrs. Farless, widow of William Haywood Farless Jr., died Saturday, Sept. 9. Born in Johnston County, N. C., she was a daughter of the late Nady and Mary Louisa Pleasant Ennis. She was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church and Gleaners Sunday School class. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Paula F. (Jim) Bowen of Hartsville and Darlene F. (Jeff) Moss of Albermarle, N.C.; three sisters, Aline Talley of Norfolk, Va., Mildred Meisel of Greensboro, N.C. and Louise Johnson of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Jerry Ennis of Benson, N.C.; and three grandchildren, William H. F. Bowen and Jonathan H. F. Bowen, both of Hartsville, and Kate Kehayes of Albermarle, N.C.

GENEVA HARRIS
Services for Geneva Caples Harris, 94, will be held today, Sept. 13, 2000, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ann Chavis and the Rev. Marvin Griggs officiating. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens. Mrs. Harris died Sept. 11. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Daniel and Louise Deas Caples. She was a member of Soul Harbor Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are four daughters, Juanita Hatchell of Darlington; Alpha James and Dot Amerson, both of Hartsville and Linda Fountain of Lamar; three sons, J. Williard Harris of Florence, Roy Harris of Hartsville and Don Harris of Lamar; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Harris; a son, Jimmy Harris; a daughter, Ruby H. Marshall and a grandson, Phillip Amerson.

BARBARA J. WATKINS
Services for Barbara June Garland Watkins, 59, will be held at 6 p.m. today, Sept. 13, 2000, in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Watkins, wife of Robert Eugene Watkins, died Sunday, Sept. 10, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, the daughter of Lila Jane Gardner Garland and the late Thomas Melvin Garland. She was a good wife and mother and was an excellent registered nurse for a number of years. Mrs. Watkins was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are her mother of Darlington; a son, John P. "Jay" Sherron of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Martha Lynn Sherron of Charleston and Carol Sherron Vernon of Yardley, Pa.; a grandson, Blake Thomas Vernon; one brother, Kendall Garland of Darlington; and one sister, Jeannine Marsh of Darlington. Memorials may be made to a Women’s Abuse Center, Cancer Research or to Hospice.
