in Texas, the daughter of the late Charles "Pete" and Lavada Jumper Ward. She was a long standing member of Our Shepard Lutheran Church in Hartsville. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Allen (Greta) Capers of Darlington; a son, Mark Carlisle (Scarlet) Shealy Jr. of Hartsville; four grandchildren, Van Ward and Elizabeth Capers, both of Darlington and Ashley Shealy and Mark C. Shealy III, both of Hartsville; two great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Zachary Ward of Darlington; and two sisters, Carlien Ward and Alline Lockhart, both of Breckenridge, Texas.

Services for Beulah Delila Tolson Watson Johnson, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. Johnson, widow of Luke Allen Watson Sr., and Woodrow Wilson Johnson, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late John Delesley and Caroline Brown Tolson. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was awarded the first female "Insurance Salesperson of the Year" in the insurance industry in the state of South Carolina. She worked as an agent for Independent Life Insurance Company. Surviving are her son, Luke Allen Watson Jr. of Blythewood; four daughters, Portia Watson Ellison of Provo, Utah, June Watson Davis of Charlotte, N.C., Laris Watson Nichols of Farmington, Utah, Scarlett Watson Ange of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Ed Verena Tolson of Charlotte, N.C., Levett Hart Tolson of Hyattsville, Md.; a sister, Carrie Tolson Huskey of Hartsville; 19 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren.
LILA H. STAFFORD
Services for Lila Harrison Stafford, 70, of Darlington, were 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment in Grove Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Stafford died Thursday, Sept. 14 in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born
in Columbia, the daughter of the late Baylis and Lenora Harrison. She spent her younger years in Marion, N.C., and graduated from Marion High School. Mrs. Stafford moved to Darlington in 1960 and worked for over 10 years at the Darlington Raceway’s Joe Weatherly Stock Car Museum. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was the co-founder of the Girl Scouts of America Chapter in Darlington. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Gaither Williams Stafford of the home; a son, Bill Stafford of Florence; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie (Steve) Petty of Florence; one grandchild, Amanda Petty of Charleston; and a sister, Janelle Harrison of Marion, N.C. Mrs. Stafford was preceded in death by two brothers, Baylis W. Harrison Jr. and Zane Dalton.

She was the wife of William Junius Haynes and was born
in Horry County, the daughter of Annie Hazel Brown Cannon and the late Rufus Lee Cannon. She was a housewife and a member of Palmetto Street Church of God. Surviving in addition to her husband of the home and her mother of Mt. Pleasant, are a son, Timothy Haynes of Chester, W. Va.; a daughter, Denise H. Barefoot of Lamar; three grandchildren; two brothers, Lonnie Cannon and Douglas Cannon, both of Mt. Pleasant, and a sister, Pearl Kimbrell, also of Mt. Pleasant.

Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Luke C. and Carrie Byrd Tolson. He was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church and the James R. Woodham Sunday School Class. He was a former member and deacon of South Hartsville Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Christine Newsome Tolson of Hartsville; a son, Lucas Tolson Jr.; a daughter, June Tolson Hyman, both of Hartsville; three brother and sisters-in-law, Melvin (Jo) Tolson, Leon (Brenda) Tolson, Lorrain (Jeraldine) Tolson, all of Hartsville; a sister and brother-in-law, Emily T. (Neal) Ritter of Hartsville; and two grandchildren, Joseph Elmore and Lucas Tolson III.

Services for Everlina Smith "Smittie" Lyons, 58, were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. James E. Moore, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery, Oates community, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home. Mrs. Lyons died Friday, Sept. 8, in a New York City hospital after a short illness. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of Mrs. Leila Garner Smith and the late Sam Smith. She received her formal education in Darlington County public schools. At an early age, she joined St. James United Methodist Church. For a number of years she lived in New York City where she was employed by the New York City Board of Education as a Safety Patrol for 30 years. Survivors include her husband, Tommie Lyons of New York City; her mother, Mrs. Leila Smith of Darlington; a daughter, Mrs. Stacey Casey of New York; four grandchildren, two sisters, Ms. Millie L. Smith of Long Island, N.Y. and Mrs. Lena M. Dargan of Alabama; three brothers, Sam Smith of Long Island, N.Y., Robert L. Smith of Bronx, N.Y., and Clemmie Smith of Darlington; other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Huckabee, widow of Eugene Huckabee, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000. Born in Bethune, she was a daughter of the late James Hoyt and Beanice Elliott Hilton. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church and the WMU and was a Sunday school teacher. She was previously associated with the Bethune public schools and the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. Surviving are her three sons and daughters-in-law, David (Marlene) Huckabee of Lake City, Paige Huckabee of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and Wayne (Susan) Huckabee of Brunswick, Ga.; two sisters, Ruth Hilton Jones of Bonneau, S.C., Sue Hilton Hughes of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Jimmy Huckabee, and a daughter, Barbara Huckabee.

Mrs. Dean, widow of Tommy Barney Dean, died Tuesday, Sept. 19. Born in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Effie Mangum Davis. She was a member of Fourth Street Baptist Church and was retired from Milliken. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Dewey L. and Barbara Dean, Jerald W. and Carol Dean, Freddie T. and Kay Dean, all of Hartsville; sister, Grace Johnson of Hartsville; seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Union United Methodist Church and a former member of the Administrative Board. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He was also engaged in farming. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Virginia Blackwell of McBee; a sister, Edith Melton of Bethune; two grandsons, Tim Eugene Blackwell of Forrest, Va., and Michael R. Blackwell of McBee; and four great-grandchildren.

Services for Harold W. Moody Sr., 93, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 22, 2000, at the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home with Dr. Ladell Humphries and Dr. Richard Bailey, officiating. in Darlington County, a son of the late Whitfield and Elizabeth Wiggins Moody. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 42 years of service, a member of the Old Timers Club and a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Audrey Wender of Charlotte, N.C. and Mrs. Miriam Lewis of Hartsville; three sons, Harold W. Moody Jr. of Myrtle Beach, Roger L. Moody of Florence and Royace L. Moody of Hartsville; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Byrd Moody. Memorials may be made to the North Hartsville Baptist Church.
