SKEETER HOWELL
Services for James W. "Skeeter" Howell, 62, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim Tomlinson will officiate with burial in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, Friday, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves, Florence, SC 29506. Mr. Howell died Thursday, Sept. 21. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Edward Gehue and Almetta Cook Howell. He was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church and Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and served in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 30 years of service and was a member of the Old Timers Club. Surviving are his wife, Delores Windham Howell of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy (Sabrina) Howell Jr. of Hartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa H. (Glenn) Carpenter of Hartsville; brother and sister-in-law, Ron (Marguerite) Howell of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Jamie Carpenter, Meredith Carpenter, Brent Carpenter, Emily Howell, Olivia Howell; and one great-grandchild, Madison Carpenter.
JERRY WINBURN
Services for Jerry Devon Winburn, 62, were held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at the Dovesville Church of God. The Revs. Stuart Jacobs and Randy Wilson officiated with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Dovesville Church of God. Mr. Winburn died Tuesday, Sept. 16. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Festus Drew and Bertha Mae Benson Winburn. He attended the Dovesville Church of God, served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Wells Fargo as a security guard at Sonoco Products Company. Surviving are his wife, Faye O’Neal Winburn of Hartsville; four sons, Terry Winburn, Daniel Winburn, Johnny Winburn, Anthony Winburn, all of Hartsville; a daughter, Crystal Pratt of Hartsville; two brothers, Ray Winburn and Larry Winburn, both of Hartsville; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Drew Winburn and Gene Winburn.
MICHAEL D. BRITT
Services for Michael D. Britt, 45, of Petersburg, W. Va., were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Schaeffer Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Clark and Rev. Scotty Grooms, officiating. Burial was in South Branch Memorial Gardens, Petersburg, W. Va., directed by Schaeffer Funeral Home with local announcement by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund. Mr. Britt died Monday, Sept. 28 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va. He was born
on Jan. 7, 1955, in Fort Campbell, Ky and was the son of Patricia (Trader) Britt of Hartsville and the late Command Sgt. Maj. Douglas N. Britt. He served 12 years in the U.S. Army and was a retired postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Martha E. (Eskew) Britt; three step-sons, Robert Ward of Petersburg, W. Va., Jay Ward of New Richmond, Ohio, and James Ward of Batavia, Ohio; three daughters-in-laws, Denise Hart of Petersburg, W. Va., Michelle Ward of New Richmond, Ohio, and Courtney Ward of Batavia, Ohio; one sister, Kim Clark of Lancaster; one brother, Donald Britt of Burleson, Texas, and seven step-grandchildren.

Services for Crystal (Tootsie) Edwards will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, in New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville. Mrs. Edwards, 34, died on Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. She was born
in Darlington County, a daughter of Christine Smith McFarland and William McFarland. She was educated in Darlington County public schools and attended New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and Southside Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving other than her mother and father, both of Hartsville, are her husband, Timothy Tyrone Edwards Sr. of Hartsville; two daughters, Savaya Smith and Toketia R. Edwards, both of Hartsville; two sons, Dontavious A. Smith and Timothy Tyrone Edwards Jr., both of Hartsville; three sisters, Stacey McFarland, Selena McFarland and LaTonya McFarland, all of Hartsville; five brothers, Erical (Tammy) McFarland, Errol (Lisa) Smith, Malvin Hudson, all of Hartsville, William McFarland of Allendale, S.C., and Michael McFarland of Atlanta, Ga.; her stepmother, Berthera Rogers of Hartsville; her step father, Mick Williams of Hartsville; father and mother-in-law, Enoch and Gloria Edwards Jr. of Hartsville; aunts, uncles, grand aunts, grand uncles, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and other close relatives and friends.

Wallace Sr., died on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000. Born in Richland County, she was the daughter of the late John P. and Margie Horne Doff. Mrs. Wallace was a former employee of Tucker-Newman and Industrial Products and Services. She was currently working with Lamar School system. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband of Hartsville; sons, Timothy Wallace of Traveler’s Rest, S.C., Harry C. Wallace Jr. of Florence, and John Wallace of Hartsville; step-mother, Mrs. Helen Doff of Batesburg, S.C.; step-brothers, Robert and Tommy Penick, both of Batesburg; and one grandchild.

Services for Jessie M. Player, 88, of Lumberton, N.C., were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Floyd Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tony Stephens officiating. Burial was in Gardens of Faith Cemetery, directed by Floyd Mortuary and Crematory, Inc., of Lumberton. Mrs. Player died Sunday, Sept. 23, in IHS Nursing Center in Lumberton. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Turner and Sarah Bates, both of Lumberton; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

in Lee County, a daughter of the late Gene Henry and Isebell Gamble Pearson. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and was educated in Darlington County public schools. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Bailey of Woodmoor, Md.; two sons, Melvin Wilson of Baltimore, Md. and Johnny (Diane) Bailey of Woodmoor, Md.; two sisters, Ida Campbell of Hartsville and Geneva Plummer of Baltimore, Md.; a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter; and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
BARRY D. LEACH
Services for Barry Douglas Leach of Sumter, husband of Cecilia J. Leach, were held at 3 p.m Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Alice Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Clay Smith and the Rev.Chris Wells, officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery directed by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter. Pallbearers were Jim Freeman, Bob McRee, Will Davis, Neil Ross, Billy McIntosh, Roby Kelley, Stephen Todd and Jim Carson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, past and present Alice Drive Baptist Church Deacons, Richard Walker, Pat Patterson and Harry Thames. Mr. Leach died Friday, Sept. 22, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after a long illness. Born May 26, 1946, in Sumter, he was the son of Margaret Taylor Leach and Harry L. Leach. He was a 1964 graduate of Furman High School, 1968 graduate of Clemson University and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1972 with tours of duty in the Philippines, Myrtle Beach AFB and Shaw AFB. He retired from the teaching profession in 1996 after 24 years at Millwood Elementary School. He was an active member of Alice Drive Baptist Church where he served on various committees, taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and chairman of the New Building Team Steering Committee, and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He served as past elementary chairman of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He was an avid fisherman and was a former member of the Sumter Bassmasters and the Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail. Survivors in addition to his wife, are his parents of Myrtle beach; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley L. (Walter E.) Butler of Myrtle Beach; sisters-in-law Mary Elizabeth Johnson Stowers of Columbia and Dolores J. Talbert of Hartsville; two nephews, Ryan Butler of Myrtle Beach and Farrell Talbert Jr. of Hartsville; several cousins and numerous friends and colleagues.
