RAY R. STONE

Graveside services for Ray Rhodes Stone, 98, affectionately known as "Granny Stone, " of Darlington, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mrs. Stone, widow of J. C. Stone, died Sept. 22. She was born in the Swift Creek section of Darlington County (Rhodes Community) and was the daughter of William Henry and Blanch Virginia Rhodes. She was the last surviving member of her family and was predeceased by sisters Grace Rhodes, Virginia Carter, Evelyn Forrest, and two brothers, George Rhodes and Kirk Rhodes. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Darlington for 75 years and a member of the T.E.L. Sunday School Class. She also served on the Kitchen Committee for the church for a number of years and looked forward to the church’s recognition of her as the oldest mother in the congregation, celebrated each Mother’s Day. Surviving are two children, Carolyn (Joharie) Godwin of Summerton and Jim (Dot) Stone of Darlington; six grandchildren, Joey (Sheree) Godwin of Summerton, Joanna (Tony) Hall of Florence, Angie (Ken) Godbold of Darlington, Jim (Shannon) Godwin of Pendleton, Jacey Stone of Darlington and Jason Stone of Georgetown, Ky.; and six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Brittany and J. Godwin of Summerton, Merritt and Anna-Leah Hall of Florence and Stone Godbold of Darlington. She also had several nieces and nephews and many close friends. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Darlington, Kitchen Committee or the charity of choice.

ELIZABETH McKNIGHT

Services for Elizabeth McAlister McKnight, 63, of Dillon, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in the Dillon First Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Mrs. McKnight, widow of the late Lamar Preston McKnight, died Saturday, Sept. 23, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Born in Florence County on June 25, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Luther L. McAlister and Ethel McGee McAlister. She was a member of Dillon First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Craig Preston and Mary McKnight of Dillon; two sisters, Mrs. Belva (James) Matthews of Coward and Mrs. Diane (Wilbur) Parrott of Florence; three brothers, Ellis McAlister, W. C. McAlister and Charles McAlister, all of Hartsville; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Amber Bailey of Dillon. Mrs. McKnight was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl McKnight; a sister, Iva Lee Williamson, and a brother, Ronald J. McAlister.

WILLIAM J. DILLON

Services for William Jerry Dillon, 42, were 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Sunrise Presbyterian Church on Sullivan’s Island with burial at 4 p.m. in Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville, directed by Stuhrs Mount Pleasant Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Sullivan’s Island Fire and Rescue Squad, 2050 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, S.C. 29482, or Sunrise Presbyterian Church, Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, S.C. 29482. Mr. Dillon died Sunday, Sept. 24, at his home on Sullivan’s Island. He was the son of Betty Jane Moorer Dillon and the late John Paul Dillon. Jerry was born Nov. 8, 1957 in Charlotte, N.C. Active in scouts and sports, he lived in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte until the age of 16 when his family moved to Sullivan’s Island. He graduated from Wando High School in 1976. Jerry was an active member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church, faithfully serving as an usher, a choir member and member of the Men’s Prayer Breakfast. He also dedicated himself to serving others through various organizations over the years including the Palmetto Crisis Center, Habitat for Humanity, Men’s Homeless Shelter, Veteran’s Administration Hospital and the Sullivan’s Island Fire Department. Jerry felt his call in life was to be of help to others; he never met a stranger and ended every parting with "God Bless You." He will be missed by his family and many, many friends. Mr. Dillon is survived by his wife, Virginia Faulkner King Dillon; his mother, Betty Jane Dillon and grandmother, Tommie Sue Moorer, both of Sullivan’s Island; a sister, Debbie Dillon Darden of Charlotte, N.C.; niece and nephews, Susanne, Thad and Steven Darden of Charlotte, N.C.; and an aunt, Margaret Anne Malkus, of Cambridge, Md.

MARGIE T. USHER

Graveside services for Margie Teal Usher, 75, of Cheraw, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens directed by Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, SC 29201 or to the charity of your choice. Mrs. Usher died Sept. 21, at her home. Born in Pageland, she was the daughter of the late Jerome and Nora Turnage Teal. She was retired from INA Bearing Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Willis A. Usher of Cheraw; two sons, Willis A. Usher Jr. of Hartsville and Michael J. Usher of Rock Hill; a brother, Carson G. Teal of Cheraw; and a grandson, Michael B. Usher of Rock Hill.

REV. WILLIAM "BILL" MALEY

Vigil services for the Rev. William "Bill" Austin Maley, 58, pastor of St. Mary of Virgin Mother in Hartsville and St. Joseph Mission in Darlington, will be held at 7 p.m. today, Sept. 27, 2000, with visitation to follow at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 11 a. m. Burial will be in Pennsylvania with arrangements by McAlister-Smith-Funeral Home, downtown chapel. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in charge of local announcements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary the Virgin Mother Catholic Church, 363 North Fifth St., Hartsville, SC 29551. The Rev. Maley died Saturday, Sept. 22, at a hospital in Greenville. He was born in Danville, Pa. to John and Sara Higgins Maley. Father Maley began his studies at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pa. In May of 1990, he relocated to South Carolina and held a position as contract administrator for Stove Safety Corp., in Greenville. He earned a theological degree from Pope John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Ma. He was ordained to priesthood at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston, on Dec. 16, 1995. His first appointment was as Parochial Vicar to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Florence and St. Louis’ Catholic Church in Dillon. He was most recently the pastor of St. Mary the Virgin Mother in Hartsville and St. Joseph Mission in Darlington.

ROSE M. LYLES

Services for Rose Marie Lyles, 41, were held Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Mrs. Lyles died Sept. 21. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Wilbur and Barbara Amerson Gainey. Surviving are her husband, James Melvin Lyles of Hartsville; a daughter, Vicky L. Lyles of Hartsville; three sisters, Patricia Frye of Lamar, Vernie Rae Gainey of Patrick and Faye Fox of Darlington; a brother, James Gainey of Hartsville; and paternal grandmother, Mattie Gainey of Hartsville. A sister, Diane Teal, preceded her in death.

John Bristow, 66, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Services for John Howard Bristow were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Levi Henry officiated with burial in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville. Mr. Bristow, 65, died on Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, in Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Four Oaks, N.C., a son of the late George and Anna James Bristow. He was educated in Johnston County public schools in North Carolina and worked in manufacturing for over 30 years. Surviving are three daughters, Diane Blakney of Hartsville, Angela Jackson of Chesterfield, and Mary Smith of Smithfield, N.C.; five sons, Purvis Bristow of Four Oaks, N.C., George Bristow of Smithfield, N.C., Kenneth Bristow of Newton Grove, N.C., John Wesley Bristow of Fort Sill, Okla., and Christopher Bristow of Hartsville; five sisters, Margaret Blue of Selma, N.C., Mattie Duff of Four Oaks, N.C., Linda Ratley Bristow of Smithfield, N.C., and Carolyn Frederick of Four Oaks, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

LEROY BROCKINGTON

Leroy Brockington, 79, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Services for Leroy Brockington will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Second Baptist Church. The Rev. J.D. Blue will officiate with burial in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville. Mr. Brockington, 79, died Tuesday in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Furman and Vernisha Carroway Brockington. He was educated in Darlington County public schools and was a member of Second Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lois Hillian Brockington of Hartsville; a daughter, Deloris Brockington of Baltimore, Md.; seven sons, Robert Brockington of Riverside, Calif., Leroy Brockington Jr. of Columbus, Ga., the Rev. Hazel (Red) Brockington of Jacksonville, Fla., Charles Brockington and Larry Brockington, both of Hartsville, Horace Brockington of New Bern, N.C., and Phillip Brockington of Yonkers, N.Y.; two sisters, Albertha Roderick and Cleo Frazier, both of Hartsville; 20 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

MARION G. JAMES

Services for Marion Graham James were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Darlington Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Olin M. Whitener Jr. officiating. Burial was in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mrs. James, wife of Albert L. James Jr., died on Sunday, Sept. 24. Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late James D. Graham and Gertrude Knight Graham. She was a 1939 graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. In 1940 and 1941, she organized and led a Girl Scout Troop, probably the first in Darlington. Later in 1950s, she was a Den Mother for a Cub Scout Pack. She devoted her life to her family and her church. Over a period of approximately 50 years, she taught the kindergarten class at Darlington Presbyterian Church, and upon her retirement the Sunday school room was named in her honor. She served for a number of years as the leader of the Daily Vacation Bible School and the Pioneer Youth Group. Her service to the church was recognized when she was named as an Honorary Life Member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church. At college and later, Mrs. James was a talented basketball and tennis player and ballroom dancer. In the early 1940s she served as a recreation director of Darlington, Marlboro, and Chesterfield counties. In later years she was a substitute teacher and study hall supervisor at St. John’s High School in Darlington. Memorials may be made to the Darlington Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, or the charity of one’s choice.
